2022.07.13 16:25 cilantro_samosa [OC] Which alley-oop duo is the most prolific? Who's playing the wrong sport & committing the most goaltending violations? Let's award some additional players (and groups) for their performances in the Historical Alt Awards!
I have now run the Alternative Awards for the past three years in
2020,
2021 &
2022. With the offseason upon us, I thought I would present the candidates for the
Historical Alternative NBA Awards!
I stumbled upon a treasure trove of play-by-play data over at
eightthirtyfour.com compiled by Udam Singh Saini & Katherine Evans, which covered the seasons from 2000-01 to 2018-19. Along with the nba_api Python package, I was able to fill in the gaps (play-by-play data was first recorded in the 1996-1997 season). For most awards, I tried to have two versions: a seasonal award & a career award.
For the awards with an asterisk, there were no stat-trackers that I found, so I had to scrape them myself. Here's the
GitHub link for that (it's a mix of Python & R)!

2021.05.25 15:37 Tkendell96 CREATED FIGHTERS MEGATHREAD
Hey gang, I'm Thomas Kendell aka Teekay, you may have seen my work in creating boxers and fightplans. While I intend to keep those up I thought now would be a good time to make a created fighters megathread. The majority will be my own as I have a huge catalogue of boxers and fighters from different combat sports, but I am more than willing to promoted other users' creations if you have a code you want added please leave it in the comments, but I would ask you tell me who it is first so I can locate it in my game. There will be a chance you have some of these already if you have been following me, so you want someone in particular. If that is the case, or you are only interested in certain fighters, please leave the name of who you want or send me message and I will drop the code. If you want everyone please send me a message with your email so I can send you the big code as it is too large to fit in a comment or a message. My own created fighters will be listed here by weight and alphabetical order, current fighters are mostly based on their current age with older fighters aged on a 'prime for prime basis' based off their biggest win or first world title. I was actually thinking of taking a break so i can chill for a bit, but ultimately decided against it because I know some of you are waiting for my predictions.
Well, the wait is over!

Austin Hubbard (11-4-0, NS) v Max Rohskof (D) (5-0-0, 5 FWS) - This is an interesting start, with the limelight being on Max. Hubbard is a fairly well rounded fighter with excellent movement, never staying in one spot, always moving his head and becoming as difficult of a target as he could. His stance switches and his tendency to throw kicks early on have been a staple in his style. He does however have a very wide stance, and if Max can take a single leg and proceed to take the fight to the ground then Max will no doubt have an advantage on the ground, speaking of Max, Rohskof is only 5 fights deep into his MMA career but all 5 of those fights have ended via submission, so we can only assume that his BJJ skills are very much up to date, now, whether or not he can weather the storm and power of Hubbard is a different question, but if Rohskof can take the fight to the ground, it’s exactly where he needs to be to get a win. Hubbard might be only 1-2 in the UFC but he’s still much more experienced than Rohskof is, and no doubt a more proficient striker. So, I’m not too sure who is going to win this fight, it all depends on where the fight goes. I got Rohskof on this one, he seems like an exciting fighter and he hasn’t faced rookies so he’s definitely been tested in regional events.

Women’s Flyweight
Roxanne Modafferi (#7) (26-14-0, NS) v Lauren Murphy (#9) (12-4-0, 2 FWS) - Odd to see someone who derailed a hype train, be the second fight in the prelims. Modafferi is one of the most experienced women's MMA fighters in the sport. She is incredibly deceptive and her stand up is very stiff and quite odd, but she’s excellent on the ground. We saw her absolutely dismantle Barber on the ground (and Barber already wasn’t that great on the ground), and it seems to be her only main weapon in her arsenal, it eliminated the striking advantage that Antonina Shevchenko had and it will eliminate Murphy’s power as well, there’s no other way I can see this fight going other than Modafferi going to the ground. Murphy really took it up a notch in her career after defeating the Muay Thai specialist in Andrea KGB Lee, although it was not without controversy. Personally to me it was very clear that Lee won that fight, outstruck her and Murphy’s takedowns, whilst it led to the ground, it didn’t effectively keep Lee on the ground. Murphy is no doubt ready to go in and fight, she’s got pretty good striking and always pushes forward, which is why it’s imperative that Modaferri takes the fight to the ground to negate the pressure and control the fight her way. I got Modafferi on this one, it’s gonna be taken to the ground and she is going to out-grapple.
Modafferi via UD
Women’s Flyweight
Courtney Casey (9-7-0, NS) v Gillian Robertson (#14) (7-4-0, NS) - This fight really doesn’t have much going behind it. Casey is a pretty long and durable striker who doesn’t really have much of a ground game, which will be an issue for her since Robertson is a fairly decent wrestler. Casey does have one thing on her side and that’s her forward pressure, we saw Barber defeat Robertson by unleashing hell and fury from the very start, that’s what Casey needs to do, she needs to be in her face and just keep landing shots. Robertson is fairly good at being a very grindy wrestler, her grappling isn’t top level but it certainly drains both the audience's energy as well as her opponents. Her striking game is fairly decent with an alright mix of punches and kicks, but her defences aren’t there, which, again, is dangerous because Casey is a very good striker. The keys to victory are there, and if Casey saw what we saw when Barber defeated Robertson, then that’s what we’ll see from her at the very start, she’s gonna push forward and just be aggressive, and with a record of 5-6 in the UFC, she cannot lose again. I’m gonna go wish KO R1 on this one, and whilst that’s a rough prediction, it’s the smaller octagon and its clear that it’s possible, just look at what Avila did last week.
Casey via KO R1
Lightweight
Frank Camacho (22-8-0, NS) v Justin Jaynes (D) (15-3-0, 4 FWS) - Jaynes is coming in as a late replacement. The original prediction for this fight was Camacho, and it still is Camacho, he’s got exceptional power and his volume of strikes really is impressive. He’s also a world class BJJ specialist and has won many tournaments and competitions throughout his career. There hasn’t been a fight in the UFC where Camacho has backed down and didn’t pull on the trigger, the dude loves a good brawl and we’re going to see that here against Jaynes. Jaynes is most likely coming in ill prepared, and because of Camacho’s notorious speed and aggression. I can’t really do too much research on Jaynes because it’s a very late replacement, but it appears that he missed weight in his last fight (Tapology has him at 159 during his last weigh in), and he’s significantly shorter and has less reach than Camacho, so really, his only advantage is to either go for a knockout, or the safer option being take it to the ground and maybe get the advantage there. I don’t know what’s going to happen but I got Camacho on this, confidently.
Camacho via KO R2
Middleweight
Marc-Andre Barriault (11-4-0, 3 FLS) v Oskar Piechota (11-3-1, 3 FLS) - Both of these fighters are probably on the verge of being cut from the UFC, especially Barriault who has not won a fight in the UFC yet. Barriault has had some very slow and relatively uneventful fights in his short career in the UFC, he has excellent power in his hands but we haven’t really seen him finish anyone in the UFC yet. This is going to be power versus technique, and if he lands on Piechota then he’s going to easily get the upper hand, and with a smaller octagon we might see less success with Piechota’s evasion and more retaliation from Piechotas counter striking. Piechota has an excellent, karate style of striking that is fairly reminiscent of Stephen Thompsons, he has a very wide stance, excellent lead kicks and his movement is beautiful. I first did my study on him back when he debuted during Teixeira v Gustaffson and he was very impressive on paper, but until he performed it seemed that the UFC was one big step up from previous competition. Recently he’s been in a rough downward spiral to Dana’s depth of hell that emanates from his head. Basically, this fight is a powerhouse against a technical striker so really, I don’t know who is going to win this time, its another rough coin toss but i’m leaning on Piechota.
Piechota via UD
Women’s Strawweight
Tecia Torres (#14) (10-5-0, 4 FLS) v Brianna Van Buren (9-2-0, 6 FWS) - I don’t have a whole lot to say about this. Torres is very much walking a very fine line right now and I don’t think i’ve seen such a bad losing streak in quite a while. She lost against some incredibly good fighters, Andrade, then Joanna, then Weili, then Rodriguez, absolute killers in the octagon, and this fight could be a redemption for Torres, as she’s facing a young up and comer who has yet to prove herself in the UFC, so Torres is definitely being a gatekeeper in this fight. Torres has always been a volume based striker who kept up a decent pace and always kept active, it’s only recently with some fairly rough fights that we haven’t seen her do too much to impress us. Van Buren is on one hell of a hot streak so far, and is the former Invicta Strawweight Champ so she’s definitely faced the best that Invicta has to offer, and has transferred her skills to the UFC where she expertly dismantled Livia Souza with excellent kickboxing and grappling, she is an absolute machine and whilst she’s not super high level and championship ready, she’s certainly going to be a star in the division. I got Van Buren on this one.
Van Buren via UD
Lightweight
Clay Guida (35-19-0, NS) v Bobby Green (24-10-1, 2 FLS) - It’s always a good fight whenever Guida is in it. Guida is basically the energizer bunny, humanized. Dudes an absolute spastic fighter, with a decent striking game and an excellent ground game, but unfortunately he’s nearing the end of his career, he’s one of the few Hall of Famers who are still currently fighting, and whilst that’s incredibly admirable, it still doesn’t change the fact that he has had some rough losses recently. His speed and movement are very hard to keep up with on the feet and that’s typically his advantage throughout all of his fights. His cardio is near endless, and he’s just an intimidating, fast fighter that I don’t think Green can keep up with. Green hasn’t had a win for two years, and even though his last two losses were very tough fights, he hasn’t been finished despite absorbing some vicious blows. He’s a very active kickboxer who went to absolute war against Drakkar Klose, and even though the judges said Klose won that fight, many media members and pundits argue otherwise. Green has excellent striking and use of feints, and he’s not afraid to throw a combo. Now, will he be able to handle the pace that Guida sets during the fight, will he fall under the pressure of having Guida about 8 inches from his face every step they take? Because if he doesn’t, and he outstrikes Guida then he’s got a great chance, but it’s very hard to tell whenever Guida is fighting, the dudes just running off Uranium or some shit. Bit of a coin toss here, but i’m leaning on Guida for this one. Bit controversial I know, but you gotta pay respect to one of the most exciting fighters out there.
Guida via KO R2
Main Card
Lightweight
Roosevelt Roberts (10-1-0, 2 FWS) v Jim Miller (31-14-0, NS) - This is a great fight. Roberts is a very exciting, well rounded fighter who is riding one hell of a tidal wave of momentum coming into this fight, having recently won against Brok Weaver, by way of a beautiful guillotine choke, Roberts has shown us that no matter where the fight goes, he’s ready and able to adapt to his opponents movements and get the upper hand. This is by far his toughest fight though and I’m not too sure if he’s ready for Miller. Miller has a very dangerous ground game and that will be his goal to ending this fight, take it to the ground, negate the height and slight reach advantage that Roosevelt has. Now, i’m no wrestling expert but isn’t it easier to takedown a taller fighter? More body/leg target? I’m blabbering but if that is the case then Miller definitely has the advantage in the wrestling department. He needs to feint punches then go in for a takedown, then work from there. He’s got the experience to finish this fight with relative ease. If Roosevelt is aware of that and can stuff those takedowns then he’s got this fight in the bag since his boxing is incredibly slick. It’s another tough fight to call but based off what i’ve seen from Roberts in recent fights, he’s something special.
Roberts via UD
Welterweight
Lyman Good (21-5-0, NS) v Belal Muhammad (16-3-0, 2 FWS) - Good is an incredibly effective striker with stupid speed and power in his hands. All 3 of his wins in the UFC have been by KO, his right hand is an absolute murder weapon and he uses his jabs and feints to set it up. He’s also an effective counter puncher, able to fall back and catch his opponents cleanly, then move out of the way. His boxing is very technical and Muhammad needs to be aware of his power. Muhammad is someone who i’ve been following for quite some time now, and time after time he’s impressed me, his work load and his pace that he sets during his fights are outstanding, his takedowns and grappling are soul sucking for his opponents and he’s got one of the best striking gyms behind him in Roufusport so there’s no doubt that he can probably go toe to toe with Good if he avoids the right hand. This is a very technical fight, and I for one can’t wait. Both of these fighters are at their peak and this could very well be a Fight of the Night.
Muhammad via Sub R3
Women’s Bantamweight
Raquel Pennington (#6) (10-8-0, NS) v Marion Reneau (#11) (9-5-1, 2 FLS) - If you guys have a meal that takes 15 minutes to make, then there’s no better break in the event than now. Pennington is a fairly active fighter who doesn’t exactly excel anywhere other than wrestling, she’s a decent, grindy wrestler, but her stand up is just average at best. She recently lost to Holm in one of the most uneventful fights I have ever seen, it was so forgetful that I was almost certain her last fight was against Nunes. Anyway, Pennington is a great wrestler and it’s really her only weapon in this fight. Reneau is a very old fighter, that’s the first thing that stood out to me, her age, she’s apparently 43 years old, that’s Henderson age right there. Reneau’s age is catching up to her because her last two fights have just been absolutely disappointing. She didn’t even really face anyone of decent challenge, Zingano outwrestled her completely, and Kunitskaya toyed with her on the feet. It’s clear who I have here, but ultimately I don’t care, this fight doesn’t mean anything in the long run.

Featherweight
Josh Emmett (#8) (15-2-0, 2 FWS) v Shane Burgos (#11) (13-1-0, 3 FWS) - I love this fight, I fucking love this fight. Emmett is one hell of a powerhouse. His hand speed and accuracy are a perfect mix to land those tight combo’s and put his opponents to sleep. He’s riding a whole lot of momentum coming into this fight with two highlight reel knockouts over Michael Johnson and Mirsad Bektic, such explosive knockout power. His right hand is by far his most powerful weapon and he covers such range with it when he throws it overhand. He’s not a super technical striker, but when he lands, boy does it have an impact. Absolute killer on the feet. I dare you to name me a boring Burgos fight, go on, i’ll wait. There are zero boring Burgos fights, the amount of output and aggression Burgos has in the octagon is absolutely beautiful and it's no doubt going to be put on display during this gorgeous matchup. He outstruck Makwan Amirkhani 105 to 22, his fight against Swanson had a total of 265 significant strikes landed, and his round one submission against Kurt Holobaugh was quick and easy. Burgos is a highlight reel machine and he’s coming up against one of the hardest hitting Featherweights in the division and holy shit I cannot wait, It’s also a tough one to predict, but at the moment i’m leaning on Burgos, he is significantly taller and longer than Emmett (5 inch height, 5.5 inch reach advantage) and his footwork and hand speed go very well together when he throws down combos. Excellent match up.

Heavyweight
Curtis Blaydes (#3) (13-2-0, 3 FWS) v Alexander Volkov (#6) (31-7-0, NS) - This fight is going to be awesome! Blaydes is by far one of my favourite Heavyweights. His wrestling is top level, his striking is capable of knocking out the best Heavyweights, and his speed, it’s like watching a Featherweight in a Heavyweights body, it’s insane. He’s no doubt at his peak performance right now, and if Ngannou wasn’t in the picture, he’d definitely be fighting for a belt by now, shit, he might even be wearing it. Blaydes isn’t known for his volume striking, or even just his striking in general, he’s an elite level wrestler and he will be using that effectively to take down Volkov and unleash some beautiful ground and pound. Volkov is a very tall fighter and will no doubt have an easier time on the feet peppering away at Blaydes, but Blaydes has all the tools at his disposal to win this fight. Volkov is a very scary striker, and his nickname “Drago” makes him so much more imposing. He was using Derrick Lewis’s face as a punching bag for 14 minutes, nonstop action, his cardio is impressive and whilst we really haven’t seen him grapple with anyone worthwhile before, we can all agree that Volkovs boxing is impressive, keeping the same activity in the 3rd as he does in the 1st. The only big question here is if he can handle the wrestling of Blaydes, that’s what i’m wondering, but for now i’m sticking with Blaydes on this one.
Blaydes via KO R2
I hope i didn't miss any fights.
In a rare case that a fighter drops out and is being replaced, I will not change my predictions because well, it's a chaotic time for MMA and I really cannot be fucked changing it one day prior to the event starting.

2018.01.12 18:16 sonofabutch The All-Dick Team
Who are the greatest Dicks of all time? There have been many Dicks in baseball history. Which Dicks stand out? I endeavored to answer this long-pondered question by looking at each and every Dick to have played Major League Baseball.
According to Baseball-Reference.com there were 155 players with the listed first name as Dick, plus three players named Dickie (Flowers, Noles, and Thon), two named Dickey (Kerr and Pearce), and one named Dicky (Gonzalez).
That's a lot of Dick!
This does not include the near-Dicks like R.A. Dickey, Chris Dickerson, Murry Dickson, or the infamous Johnny Dickshot, nor the handful of 19th century players who had Dick as a secondary nickname, like Duff Cooley, Bill Hawke, or George Mapes.
We are looking for Dick. Guys who are listed in the baseball record books with the first name Dick. I guess you could call it a
Dick Hunt.
The Last Dick: It's amazing how common this nickname was, for decades, and now it's almost entirely extinct. The last Dick to play in the majors was
Dicky Gonzalez, who appeared in 16 games with the Mets in 2001 and four games with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2004, posting a career 5.02 ERA over 66.1 innings. Dicky was his given name, not a nickname. He was born in Puerto Rico in 1978.
If you're a stickler and you're purely looking for plain ol' Dick, then the last Dick was
Dick Schofield, probably best remembered as a shortstop for the Angels in the 1980s. Dick played 14 seasons, hitting .230/.308/.316 in 4,299 at-bats. He retired in 1996. Dick's father also was a Dick,
Dick Schofield Sr. He had a 19-year career as a switch-hitting shortstop, mostly with the Pirates and Cardinals. The elder Dick hit just .227/.317/.297 (73 OPS+) but he could flash the leather. In addition to being the father of the Dick Schofield Jr., he is the grandfather of Jayson Werth, who is not a Dick.
Other modern Dicks were infielder
Dickie Thon, who retired in 1993 after 15 years mostly as a shortstop with the Houston Astros, and pitcher
Dickie Noles, who retired in 1990 after 11 years with six different teams (36-53, 11 SV, 4.56 ERA). Bonus Dick: Dickie Noles's agent was
Dick Moss, which sounds like something you should have checked out by a medical professional.
The First Dick: "Major League Baseball" was founded in 1869, but Baseball-Reference begins with the National Association in 1871. There were four Dicks that year, but the first one to debut, and therefore the first Dick, was
Dickey Pearce (ouch). A shortstop with the New York Mutuals of the National Association, he made his debut on May 18, 1871. Pearce is remembered as one of the first men to be a "professional" baseball player, that is, he made his living as a ballplayer. Prior to that, baseball was supposed to be an amateur game and players were paid under the table. Pearce is credited with the invention of the bunt and some sources credit him with being the first to play shortstop as an infield position -- prior to that, games were played with three outfielders and three infielders, with the second baseman playing up the middle. Shortstop was a roving position, with the fielder sometimes in the infield and sometimes in the outfield depending on the batter. Dickey played shortstop as we do now, on the left side of the infield, moving the second baseman to the right side. (Some credit the innovation to a non-Dick, Daniel "Doc" Adams.)
Playemanager
Dick McBride was the first pure Dick when he made his debut with the Philadelphia Athletics on May 20. Other Dicks that year were
Dick Higham, a British-born catcher, second baseman, and outfielder, who made his debut on June 1 for the New York Mutuals. The Troy Haymakers started play on May 9, but shortstop
Dickie Flowers didn't get into a game until June 3.
The Best Dick: The best Dick is undoubtedly
Dick Allen, who many people feel is one of the best players not in the Hall of Fame. Dick Allen hit .292/.378/.534 (.912 OPS) over a career that spanned some of the worst years for MLB offense... his career OPS+ is 156, which ties him with Willie Mays and Frank Thomas for 20th all-time. In fact the only players with a higher career OPS+ who aren't in the Hall of Fame are either active (Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, Joey Votto), banned or semi-banned (Barry Bonds, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Mark McGwire), or from the 19th century (Pete Browning, Dave Orr). His career WAR is 58.7, which puts him between Vladimir Guerrero (59.3) and Darrell Evans (58.5). Allen wasn't a particularly big Dick at 5'11" and 187 pounds, but he clubbed 351 home runs and drove in 1,119 runs over his 15-year career. He won the MVP in 1972 (.308/.420/.603, 37 HR, 113 RBI), the Rookie of the Year in 1964 (.318/.382/.557, 29 HR, 91 RBI), and was a seven-time All-Star as a third baseman, leftfielder, and first baseman.
The Second-Best Dick? Almost all of baseball's best Dicks have been shortstops:
Dick Bartell, who ranks behind only Allen with highest WAR by a Dick (40.2), was primarily a shortstop; next highest at 37.5 is
Dick McAuliffe, who was a second baseman and shortstop for the Tigers in the 1960s; then another 1960s shortstop,
Dick Groat (36.7), who also briefly played in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons; and the aforementioned 1980s shortstop
Dickie Thon (23.9). You have to get all the way down to the sixth-best Dick,
Dick Hoblitzell, to find a batter from another position. Hoblitzell posted 19.6 career WAR as a first baseman with the Reds and then the Red Sox between 1908 and 1918. The only other Dick in the top 1,000 batters for Career WAR is the last Dick, Angels shortstop
Dick Schofield (18.8).
One of the few Dicks to work behind the plate was
Dick Dietz, who played for the Giants in the 1960s. Dick's best year by far was 1970, when he hit .300/.426/.515 with 22 HR and 107 RBI and was named an All-Star.
No list of great Dicks would be complete, however, without
Dick Stuart. This Dick was an All-Star with the Pirates in 1961, hitting .301/.344/.581 (141 OPS+) with 35 HR and 117 RBI, but he was best known for his skills with the glove... or lack thereof. Known as "Dr. Strangeglove", "Stonefingers", and "The Man With the Iron Glove", he led the league in errors for seven straight years, usually by a lot. In 1963, now with the Red Sox, Dick led the American League in RBIs (118) and total bases (319)... and errors as a first baseman (29).
The best pitching Dick was the first true Dick,
Dick McBride, a player-manager for the 1870s Philadelphia Athletics of the National Association. This Dick compiled 30.2 career WAR. He posted a 1.64 ERA (139 ERA+) in 1874, starting 55 games and going the distance in all of them (487 innings pitched). But that was just a warm-up for 1875, when he went 44-14 with 60 starts and 59 complete games for 538 innings. He tied for the league lead in most walks allowed with... 24. In 538 innings. He also struck out 27 batters. In 538 innings. It was a different game.
The next Dick is a little more modern, 1960s Cubs pitcher
Dick Ellsworth (23.3 WAR). The lefty went 22-10 with a 2.11 ERA in 1963, by far his best season.
Dick Rudolph (22.8 WAR) went 26-10 as a member of the famous "Miracle Braves" of 1914, throwing two complete game wins in sweeping the Athletics in the World Series.
Dick Donovan (20.8 WAR) was a three-time All-Star pitcher in the 1950s and 1960s.
Dick Drago (20.5 WAR) pitched for five teams in the 1970s but is probably best remembered as a workhorse reliever for the pennant-winning '75 Red Sox.
Dick Ruthven (17.3 WAR) was a two-time All-Star and helped the Phillies win the 1980 World Series.
Dick Hall (16.9 WAR) started his career as a 21-year-old outfielder with the Pirates and ended it as a 40-year-old reliever with the Orioles. He posted a career 3.29 ERA (111 ERA+) and 1.102 WHIP in 1,259.2 innings. Rounding out the Dicks in the top 1,000 Career Pitching WAR were
Dick Radatz (16.1), best remembered as a reliever for the 1960s Red Sox;
Dick Tidrow (14.1), a member of the "Bronx Zoo" Yankees of the late 1970s; and finally
Dick Bosman (11.3), who went 14-5 with a 2.19 ERA with the Washington Senators in 1969.
My Manager Is A Dick: Who would head these Dicks? Let's give a hand to the only Dick in the Hall of Fame,
Dick Williams. This Dick played 13 years in the majors, posting a .260/.312/.392 batting line as a utility man over 3,265 plate appearances. He then made his managerial debut at age 38, piloting the Boston Red Sox to a 92-70 record and the A.L. Pennant in 1967. He would win back-to-back World Series with the Oakland A's in 1972 and 1973, and win the N.L. championship in 1984 with the Padres, where he was named Manager of the Year. He's the winningest Dick of all time, with 1,571 wins against 1,451 losses.
Joining his coaching staff will be
Dick Howser, who you know as the manager of the 1985 World Champion Kansas City Royals. This Dick managed for eight seasons, compiling a 507-425 record (.544 W%). He also was a pretty good player. Like most Dicks, he was a middle infielder for the Indians, Athletics, and Yankees in the 1960s. In 1961, he was an All-Star and finished runner-up for the A.L. ROY after hitting .280 with a .377 OBP in 158 games, but he was primarily a glove man. He was a little Dick as a player, standing 5'8" and weighing 155 pounds.
Our best pitching Dick,
Dick McBride, also was a manager, compiling a 161-84 record (.657 W%) between 1871 and 1875 with the National Association's Philadelphia Athletics.
Other Dick managers:
Dick Sisler piloted the Cincinnati Reds to a 121-94 mark between 1964 and 1965; our old pal
Dickey Pearce went 49-35 in the 1870s;
Dick Higham, who at age 22 was a player-manager for the 29-11 New York Mutuals of the National Association; and finally
Dick Tracewski, a light-hitting middle infielder for the Dodgers and Tigers in the 1960s who went on to a long career as a coach with the Tigers, including a brief stint as interim manager when Sparky Anderson took a leave of absence.
Richest Dick: Dick Allen was the highest paid player in baseball in 1973 ($200,000) and 1974 ($250,000)... but that's chump change compared to what players were making later. The last Dick,
Dicky Gonzalez, made $300,000 as a minor league journeyman in 2003.
Dickie Thon went to arbitration in 1991,
lost, and still made $1,250,000.
Dick Schofield Jr. made $1,483,334 in 1991 and $1,600,000 in 1992.
The highest bonus ever paid to a Dick was $55,000 -- some sources say $52,000 -- to the first "bonus baby,"
Dick Wakefield, in 1941. For context, the highest paid player in baseball at the time was Joe DiMaggio at $43,750.
Dick Joyce was offered an even bigger bonus -- $100,000 in 1961. It would have been the third-highest signing bonus paid that year, behind $175,000 to Bob Bailey and $106,000 to Jake Gibbs, and the highest bonus ever paid to a Dick. But he turned it down to attend College of the Holy Cross, which went to the College World Series tournament in 1962 and 1963. Dick also played for the U.S. team in the 1964 Olympics, where baseball was a demonstration sport.
Dick Conway was paid $2,500 in 1885, reportedly the highest salary of any player in the league. Conway was a 19th century pitcher who threw pretty hard by the standards of the day -- on July 23, 1885, he threw a pitch that fractured the skull of Bill McGunnigle, the opposing team's player manager. The
Brockton Weekly Gazette reported that the pitch "sped from the pitcher's hand like a bullet from a gun," and "struck [McGunnigle] directly behind the left ear which caused a crash that was heard in every part of the grounds. Poor 'Mac' fell like an animal beneath the butcher's axe, and his quivering form was drawn up in agony as he lay upon the ground."
Biggest Dick: The biggest Dick was probably
Dick Radatz. He was certainly the most imposing. Standing 6 foot 6 inches tall and weighing 230 pounds, Radatz was known as "The Monster", a nickname given to him by none other than Mickey Mantle. A two-time All-Star, Radatz was the A.L. Fireman of the Year as a rookie in 1962. He struck out 745 batters in 693.2 career innings, twice led the league in saves, and was named the A.L. All-Star Team in 1963 and 1964. Another 1960s reliever,
Dick Hall, also was 6'6", but weighed 200 pounds;
Dick Thoenen, who pitched in one game for the Phillies in 1967, was 6'6" and weighed 215 pounds.
An inch taller but weighing in at 215 pounds was
Dick Ricketts, who appeared in 12 games as a pitcher for the 1959 St. Louis Cardinals.
Dick Joyce, a lefty pitcher who appeared in five games for the Kansas City Athletics in 1965, was 6'5", 225, and
Dick Woodson, a 1970s pitcher, was 6'5", 205, and the third of the three players named
Dick Smith -- this one briefly an outfielder with the Senators in 1969 -- was 6'5", 200.
Dick Koecher, a lefty pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies in the late 1940s, was 6'5", 196 pounds.
Pitcher
Dick Wantz, who appeared in one game with the California Angels in 1965, stood 6'5" but he weighed just 175 pounds. That is one long, skinny Dick!
Smallest Dick: The tiniest Dick in major league baseball history was 1870s shortstop
Dickey Pearce. Even by 19th century standards he was a small man, standing just 5'3". But he was a thick Dick at 161 pounds.
There were several Dicks who were listed at 5'7", most notably
Dickey Kerr, a 155-pound lefty. "Scouts would notice I had a pretty good record for some minor-league club and would look me up, but when they got one look at me they’d turn the other way. 'Too little,' they’d say," Kerr recalled. The rookie pitcher for the infamous 1919 Black Sox wasn't in on the fix, and the "too little" Dick came up huge in the World Series, throwing two complete game victories
including a three-hit shutout in Game 3.
Broken Dicks: In 1983,
Dickie Thon had the best season of any Dick not named Dick Allen. The 25-year-old All-Star shortstop hit .286/.341/.457 (127 OPS+), racking up 7.4 WAR. That came after his 1982 campaign when he hit collected 6.1 WAR after hitting .276 and leading the league in triples. He opened the 1984 season going 6-for-18 but on April 8 was
hit in the face by a Mike Torrez fastball. He returned in 1985, but was never the same player -- he had 13.3 WAR in 1,691 plate appearances before the beaning, and 10.6 WAR in 3,175 plate appearances after. He never fully regained the vision in his left eye.
Another what-could-have-been was
Dick Hughes, a bespectacled right-hander who finished runner-up in the 1967 Rookie of the Year race to a fellow named Tom Seaver. Dick went 16-6 for the world champion Cardinals that year with a 2.67 ERA and league-leading 0.954 WHIP in 222.1 IP (48 BB, 161 K), racking up 4.2 WAR. But he tore his rotator cuff the following year and never came all the way back, retiring after just 63.2 more innings.
Dick Joyce had an even briefer career. A star collegiate pitcher, this Dick went 8-3 with a 2.59 ERA -- and 143 Ks in 118 innings -- in his professional debut in A-ball. He was then promoted to Double-A, where he went 5-3 with a 3.00 ERA. The Kansas City A's then promoted him to the bigs, where he posted a 2.77 ERA in 13 innings (12 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 7 K). But he developed arm trouble and never returned to the majors, retiring at age 23. He is a member of the Cheverus High School, Holy Cross, and Maine Baseball Halls of Fame.
Two-Way Dicks: Dick Groat was an eight-time All-Star and the 1960 MVP, but he preferred basketball to baseball -- he was a two-sport star at Duke University and is a member of the College Basketball Hall of Fame. He signed with both the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Detroit Pistons, and played professionally for both teams in 1952. Branch Rickey, then the Pirates GM, eventually convinced Groat to give up basketball to become a full-time baseball player. He compiled 36.7 WAR in his 14-season career.
Another two-sport Dick was
Dick Spalding, who had just 465 career MLB at-bats, but is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Spalding played professional soccer for 15 years and was an inaugural member of the U.S. national soccer team, scoring a goal in the team's first game. After retiring from soccer he switched to baseball, making the Phillies in 1927 as a 33-year-old rookie outfielder. He would later be a first base coach with the Phillies and Cubs.
Dick Reichle started out as a football player -- he was on the team that won the 1919 Rose Bowl with George Halas -- then switched to baseball, playing in 128 games for the Boston Red Sox between 1922 and 1923. Then he switched back, playing professional football for the Milwaukee Badgers of the National Football League, and was named to the All-Pro second team in 1923. He returned to baseball in 1924 but broke his leg in spring training. He bounced around the minors for another season before quitting both sports at age 28.
Barely Legal Dick: Dick Ellsworth made his MLB debut on June 22, 1958 at 18 years and 92 days, making him the youngest Dick in MLB history. He would go on to a 13-year career as a pitcher, going 115-137 with a 3.72 ERA and 1.331 WHIP in 2,155.2 innings.
Dick Scott, the first of three players in MLB history with that name, was just a little bit older, making his debut at 18 years and 141 days on June 26, 1901. Scott would make just three appearances in his MLB career, going 0-2 with a 5.14 ERA in 21.0 innings. He was 18 years and 153 days old when he ended his career, making him the second-youngest Dick to begin a career and the youngest Dick to end one.
Mystery Dicks: Almost all the Dicks in MLB history had the first name Richard. But I say almost! Sometimes the origin isn't so obvious.
Dick McBride, one of the very first Dicks in MLB history, had the given name John; he was called Dick from his middle name, Dickson. That's the same story with another 19th century player,
Dick Phelan, who was born James Dickson Phelan. Other Dicks were called that because they had the middle name Richard: 1960s pitcher
Dick Bates, 1870s pitcher
Dickie Flowers, and 1940s pitcher
Dick Stone were all born Charles Richard!
Dick Kauffman was born Howard Richard,
Dick Scott was Amos Richard, and
Dick Coffman was Samuel Richard; his little brother also played in the bigs and he was known as Slick Coffman. Slick and Dick!
There's also
Dickie Noles, whose given name was actually Dickie;
Dicky Gonzalez, whose given name was actually Dicky; and
Dick Whitman, whose given name was actually Dick.
Who knows why Maurice Lennon Burrus went by the name
Dick Burrus -- I guess Maurice didn't like being called the Space Cowboy or the Gangster of Love. (Actually the 1920s pitcher died a year before
The Joker was released, so probably not.) We also don't know why Elmer Joseph Cox started calling himself
Dick Cox, other than Dick Cox is a totally awesome name. Other mystery Dicks:
Dick Bayless (Harry Owen Bayless),
Dick Blaisdell (Howard Carleton Blaisdell),
Dick Gossett (John Star Gossett),
Dick Harley (Henry Risk Harley),
Dick Hurley (William H. Hurley),
Dick Pierson (Edmund Dane),
Dick Robertson (Preston James Robertson),
Dick Spalding (Charles Harry Spalding), and
Dick Wright (Willard James Wright).
We can speculate that Decatur Poindexter Jones was known as
Dick Jones because Dick is sort of short for Decatur. Either that or maybe he was a fan of the bad guy from
RoboCop. Dick Newsome, born Heber Hampton Newsome, said only his mother called him Heber; his father started calling him Dick and so did everybody else.
A curious case of Dick is
Dick Barrett, who was actually born Tracy Souter Barrett. A star pitcher for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the 1920s, Barrett played professionally under the alias "Dick Oliver" to avoid losing his amateur status. When he came to the bigs in 1933, he resumed using his real last name but by then was so used to Dick he just kept it as his first name.
Dicks Who Were Dicks: Dick Allen was a famously irascible Dick. He often fought with his managers, with the fans, and with the press. Although a great talent, Dick retired at age 35, a year after hitting a still-respectable .268/.346/.480 in 298 AB. Playing for the A's, his fifth team in a 15-year career, Allen left the bench without permission during a game in June. A's owner Charley O. Finley walked into the clubhouse and discovered Dick had decided to take a shower in the middle of the game. He suspended Allen for a week. Allen retired.
Dick Bartell was once viewed as one of the best shortstops in the National League, but is now largely forgotten. He hit .284/.355/.391 over an 18-year career, but a lot of that was in the crazy offense 1930s -- his career OPS+ was just 96. Bartell was renowned as a combative player who used his mouth, his spikes, and his fists against his opponents. "Belligerent Bartell is probably the most hated Giant in the National League," the
New York Post reported. "Boys don’t like his flip tongue, his overweening arrogance, or the manner in which he throws his spikes into people’s faces while sliding into bases or charging across second on double plays." Owning up to his reputation, Bartell titled his autobiography
Rowdy Richard. Dick Selma is a pretty memorable name, especially if your name is Selma, but an even more memorable nickname: "Mortimer Snerd". What? That was the name of ventriloquist Edgar Bergen's wisecracking dummy. People called Dick that because he was such a, well, dick. He was once punched out after making a joke at the expense of a Phillies front office executive, who happened to be a former hockey player.
Little is known about
Dick Van Zant, who played 10 games at third base in the waning days of the 1888 season for the Cleveland Blues except for his nickname: Foghorn Dick. We also know he was both a big-D Dick and little-D dick. According to
The Great Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Major League Baseball by David Nemeo, in 1889 he "fired balls at jeering spectators from the team bus as it drove away from the ballpark" after a game in Davenport, Iowa. He pleaded guilty to inciting a riot and paid a $2 fine.
Redundant Dick: Surprisingly, though there were scores of Dicks and scores of Johnsons, there's never been a player in MLB named Dick Johnson... but there was a
Dick Pole. The right-handed pitcher with a memorable name had a forgettable career, going 25-37 with a 5.05 ERA as a member of the Red Sox and Mariners in the 1970s.
Dick Cox was a little Dick at 5'7", and
Dick Woodson was a big Dick at 6'5". There also 1950s outfielder
Dick Kokos, which was probably pronounced like it rhymed with "Focus" but would be funnier if you pronounced it another way. The same for
Dick Koecher... I've heard it pronounced like "Coacher" but saying it "Cocker" would be funnier.
Pardon Me, Miss: These Dicks must have been popular with the ladies:
Dick Joyce,
Dick Sharon,
Dick Estelle,
Dick Kelley,
Dick Carroll, and
Dick Selma. Honorable mention:
Dick McBride.
You Should See A Doctor About That: Dick Green,
Dick Brown, and
Dick Gray should all get that checked out. You should also disclose to your lover if you have
Dick Lines or
Dick Ricketts. I suggest you never
Dick Bass. I winced a little when I read the names of 19th century players
Dick Burns and
Dickey Pearce. You might require some
Dick Padden.
Is That Your Porn Name? You gotta love a guy named
Dick Starr. This Dick
could have been a star -- he was a promising pitching prospect in the Yankees farm system in the 1940s, but was traded to the St. Louis Browns after the 1948 season. Instead of collecting World Series rings with Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra, Starr would toil for one of the worst teams in the league before returning to the minors and ultimately retiring in 1956.
Another hot one was
Dick Sisler. This sizzling Dick was the son of Hall of Famer George Sisler. He played eight years in the bigs as a first baseman and left fielder, hitting .276/.336/.406 in 2,880 plate appearances for the Phillies, Cardinals, and Reds between 1946 and 1953, and making the N.L. All-Star team in 1950. Sisler is immortalized in Ernest Hemingway's
The Old Man and the Sea: "In the other league, between Brooklyn and Philadelphia, I must take Brooklyn. But then I think of Dick Sisler and those great drives in the old park. There was nothing ever like them. He hits the longest ball I have ever seen." (Despite the high praise, Sisler had just 55 career home runs, and never more than 13 in a season.) He would later manage the Reds for a couple seasons.
With a name like
Dick Braggins you better measure up. This Dick was a pitcher, going 1-2 in four games with the 1901 Cleveland Blues (4.78 ERA, 1.844 WHIP).
Dick Hoover sounds like he'd have a great career as a fluffer. He'd probably be better at that than he was as a pitcher, with a career 7.71 ERA in two appearances (4.2 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 0 K).
Dick Manville sure sounds like a stud. This Dick had just 12 career appearances, giving up 15 runs, 25 hits, and 15 walks in 19 innings.
Last Name, First Name: You may get a giggle out of
Hyde, Dick;
Bates, Dick;
Hunt, Dick;
Lowe, Dick;
Stone, Dick; and
Young, Dick. But in my book, nothing beats
Such, Dick. The right-handed pitcher posted a 7.56 ERA in 21 games for the Washington Senators in 1970. Such a Dick!
Can I Give You A Hand With That Dick? Maybe I need to hire a
Dick Butler. He can use a
Dick Wheeler.
Proud To Be A Dick: Dick Allen always wanted to be called Dick, but the Philadelphia organization insisted his name in all official correspondence and rosters be Richie... perhaps hoping to link him to one of Philadelphia's other great stars, Richie Ashburn.
"To be truthful with you, I’d like to be called Dick," Allen told a newspaper reporter in 1964. "I don’t know how the Richie started. My name is Richard and they called me Dick in the minor leagues... Anyone who knows me well calls me Dick."
Well said, Dick!
The All-Time All-Dick Team:
I allowed WAR to be my guide to assemble the All-Time All-Dick All-Star team. I was realistic about the positions these guys actually played; there's only so many shortstops you can put on a team. Only a handful of Dicks ever played center field and none of them could hit very well.
C Dick Dietz - .261/.390/.425 (129 OPS+, 12.6 WAR); All-Star in 1970, when he hit .300/.426/.515 with 22 HR and 107 RBI in 493 AB
C Dick Bertell - .250/.305/.312 (70 OPS+, 3.0 WAR), .238/.305/.320 in 353 AB in 1964
1B Dick Hoblitzell - .278/.341/.374 (111 OPS+, 19.6 WAR); hit .308/.364/.418 in 517 AB in 1909
1B/OF Dick Siebert - .282/.332/.379 (96 OPS+, 7.9 WAR); hit .334/.385/.460 in 467 AB in 1941
2B Dick McAuliffe - .247/.343/.403 (109 OPS+, 37.5 WAR); three-time All-Star; hit .274/.373/.509 in 430 AB in 1966. His 37.5 career WAR ranks third among Dicks.
2B Dickie Thon - .264/.317/.374 (95 OPS+, 23.9 WAR); 1983 All-Star, when he hit .286/.341/.457 in 619 AB
3B Dick Allen - .292/.378/.534 (156 OPS+, 58.7 WAR); seven-time All-Star, 1964 N.L. ROY, 1972 A.L. MVP, when he hit .308/.420/.603 with 37 HR and 113 RBI. But his 1964 season -- when he won the Rookie of the Year -- was the best season ever by a Dick, as he put up 8.8 WAR. Dick hit .318/.382/.557 (162 OPS+) as a third baseman that year. (His 1972 MVP campaign, with 8.6 WAR, was the second-best season by a Dick, and 1966, with 7.5 WAR, was the third-best.)
3B Dick Green - .240/.303/.347 (87 OPS+, 16.0 WAR); .275/.353/.427 in 483 AB in 1969
SS Dick Bartell - .284/.355/.391 (96 OPS+, 40.2 WAR); two-time All-Star; hit .306/.367/.469 in 516 AB in 1937. Bartell has the second-most WAR of any Dick behind only Allen.
SS Dick Groat - .286/.330/.336 (89 OPS+, 36.7 WAR); five-time All-Star, 1960 NL MVP, but his best year was 1963 (.319/.377/.450, 43 doubles, 128 OPS+)
SS Dick Schofield Jr. - .230/.308/.316 (73 OPS+, 18.8 WAR), .249/.321/.397 in 458 AB in 1986
LF Dick Sisler - .276/.336/.406 (101 OPS+, 7.9 WAR); 1950 All-Star, when he hit .296/.373/.442 with 13 HR and 83 RBI in 523 AB
CF Dick Williams - .260/.312/.392 (92 OPS+, 3.5 WAR); hit .288/.346/.448 in 420 AB in 1960
RF Dick Wakefield - .293/.396/.447 (131 OPS+, 13.2 WAR); All-Star in 1943, when he hit .316/.377/.434 in 633 AB, leading the league with 200 hits and 38 doubles.
DH Dick Stuart - .264/.316/.489 (117 OPS+, 7.8 WAR); 1961 All-Star, when he hit .301/.344/.581 with 35 HR and 117 RBI
P Dick McBride - 149-78, 2.71 ERA, 1.246 WHIP in 2,082 IP (30.2 WAR); 44-14, 2.33 ERA, 1.173 WHIP in 538.0 IP in 1875
P Dick Ellsworth - 115-137, 3.72 ERA, 1.331 WHIP in 2,155.2 IP (23.3 WAR); 22-10, 2.11 ERA, 1.025 WHIP in 1963
P Dick Rudolph - 121-109, 2.66 ERA, 1.158 WHIP in 2,049 IP (22.8 WAR); 26-10, 2.35 ERA, 1.038 WHIP in 1914.
P Dick Donovan - 122-99, 3.70 ERA, 1.231 WHIP in 2,017.1 IP (20.8 WAR); three-time All-Star; 10-10, 2.40 ERA, 1.026 WHIP in 168.2 IP in 1961
P Dick Drago - 108-117, 3.62 ERA, 1.311 WHIP in 1,875.0 IP (20.5 WAR); 17-11, 2.98 ERA, 1.231 WHIP in 241.1 IP in 1971
P Dick Ruthven - 123-127, 3.75 ERA, 1.385 WHIP in 2,109.0 IP (17.3 WAR); two-time All-Star; 15-11, 3.38 ERA, 1.165 WHIP in 1978
P Dick Hall - 3.29 ERA, 1.102 WHIP, 71 SV in 1,259.2 IP (16.9 WAR); 9-1, 9 SV, 1.85 ERA, 0.844 WHIP in 87.2 IP in 1964
P Dick Radatz - 3.13 ERA, 1.194 WHIP, 120 SV, 745 K in 693.2 IP (16.1 WAR); two-time All-Star; 2.29 ERA, 1.025 WHIP, 181 K in 157 IP in 1964
P Dick Tidrow - 100-94, 3.68 ERA, 1.308 WHIP in 1,746.2 IP (14.1 WAR); 14-15, 2.77 ERA, 1.138 WHIP in 237.1 IP in 1972
P Dick Bosman - 82-85, 3.67 ERA, 1.261 WHIP in 306 games (229 starts), 1,591 IP (11.3 WAR); 14-5, 2.19 ERA, 1.010 WHIP in 193.0 IP in 1969
