Place in Early Childhood Teacher Education

2023.06.03 09:58 tidderscot Place in Early Childhood Teacher Education

Introduction

Quality is the consistent dominant narrative in early childhood education. Framed by Western worldviews and steeped in colonial logic, quality, in this sense, is described as normalizing, decontextualizing, regulating, managing, measuring, and operating under the values of universality, objectivity, and stability with no regard for diversity or context (Dahlberg et al. 2007). Often viewed as the ultimate goal in many early childhood teacher education programs and settings, quality across the early childhood sector drives decision-making and policies including early childhood teacher education. Generally, this type of quality is made visible through the focus on the individual child and the use of stage development, perpetuating the view of young children as deficit and learning and development as linear. This has contributed to the acceptance of pedagogy as activities and methods addressing surface-based skills (e.g., counting, phonics) rather than an engagement with meaning-making and complex thinking. The overuse of these discourses perpetuates a lack of understanding of children and their contexts and experiences. Further, the constant attention to achievement of milestones and individual processes pushes situated and daily moments of learning and teaching to the margin.
Dahlberg et al. (2007) call for a paradigmatic shift in early childhood education that entails disrupting this dominant and narrow view of quality: rethinking quality as meaning-making, valuing complexity, multiplicity, subjectivity, context, provisionality, and uncertainty. This shift is reflective of post-foundational viewpoints, including critical theory, postmodernisms, post-structuralisms, postcolonialisms, and post-humanisms. Early childhood teacher education that is situated to rethink to the quality agenda and engage with post-foundational perspectives of meaning-making requires conceptual and pedagogical teaching practices, utilizing different ways of knowing, being, and doing. Early childhood teacher education constructed in this manner is supportive of generating twenty-first-century citizens who think with complexity, work collaboratively, and connect to the local and global communities.
Content and experiences within early childhood teacher education that rethink quality as meaning-making then build a strong sense of social justice while also educating all young children from diverse backgrounds, positioning pre-service teachers as agents of change. This includes critically inquiring and intentionally acting on ethnicity, race, social class, gender, gender expression, culture, religion, language, ability, and sexual identities to empower pre-service teachers in generating practices of equity and critical consciousness. Early childhood teacher education is positioned in the broader social, historical, political, and cultural contexts and addresses the significance of place as it is related to these broader and local contexts.

Alternative Narratives of Early Childhood Teacher Education

Drawing from multidisciplinary perspectives including post-foundationalism, feminism, post-developmentalism, sociology, and postcolonialism, place, and Indigenous worldviews, alternative narratives disrupt the dominant narratives in early childhood teacher education and engage pre-service teachers in the politics and ethics of teaching. Alternative narratives generate multiple perspectives and diversities while offering a provocation to rethinking and pondering what is possible in early childhood teacher education. Foregrounding teacher education with alternative narratives positions practices as engaging with complexity (Pacini-Ketchabaw et al. 2015) and diversity inclusive of the political, social, economic, and cultural context. Engaging with complexity is never standing outside the early childhood setting but rather co-participating and being with – all contributing to meaning-making for teachers, children, and families. Meaning-making is part of the daily classroom life and creates conditions to rethink practice focused on ideas and concepts rather than consuming skills and separate disciplinary content, often in a decontextualized manner. Part of this work is embracing uncertainty rather than universal truths perpetuated through the dominant narratives that are limited by developmental logic. This means actively resisting teaching practices that universalize, marginalize, and normalize and instead being in relation and entangled with the messiness of teaching and learning (Dahlberg et al. 2007). In places of ongoing settler colonialism, this requires understanding the ways in which children and early childhood educators are entangled with postcolonial geohistories of place.

Narratives of Place

Euro-Western narratives situate place as romantic and innocent, a “natural” place for children to play. This framing of place is linear and does not consider place as relational and agentic or engage with all the histories that places hold. Alternative narratives of place move beyond environmental stewardship framings and attend to the ways in which human and more-than-human worlds are already entangled (Taylor 2017). Place is understood as something more than a geographical space as it is not “culturally or politically neutral’ (Mignolo 2003, quoted in Tuck et al. 2014, p. 1) and is a “territory that is Indigenous and which has been and continues to be subject to the forces of colonization” (Tuck et al. 2014, p. 1). Recognizing place as not without an historical, political, or ethical context attends to the ethics and politics of place, bringing together nature and culture (Haraway 2008) and enacting pedagogies of concern.
Alternative narratives of place foreground Indigenous knowledges, shifting perceptions of place beyond an innocent (or at best pretty) backdrop to teaching and learning. It is important to acknowledge that engaging with place in a postcolonial setting requires engaging with place in a conceptually different way. This difference focuses on looking beyond the colonial inscriptions of place and acknowledging the colonial violences that have been committed to places with the aim of recovering Indigenous ways of knowing and being (Tuck et al. 2014). This acknowledges that Indigenous epistemologies and ontologies are in the center of meaning-making, not at the periphery. This is a deliberate political and ethical practice that acknowledges Indigenous people’s original and ongoing connections with the land. This connection involves much more than the space and the place.

Indigenous Worldviews and Place in Early Childhood Teacher Education

Thinking with local, place-based Indigenous perspectives is largely absent from early childhood teacher education. In particular, Indigenous perspectives are often “othered” as part of wider multicultural discussions, resulting in tokenistic practices that homogenize Indigenous culture. Engaging in alternative narratives of place that respectfully foreground Indigenous worldviews disrupts dominant settler perspectives. Early childhood teacher education focused on the practice of engaging with local, specific Indigenous knowledges requires authentic, respectful connections to local Indigenous groups and a commitment to engage with the full range of historical, political, and ethical contexts. This disrupts the knowledge consumption so easily practiced within the narratives of the individual and traditional stage theories of development and provides a way for teacher educators and pre-service teachers to move beyond the taken-for-granted narratives of early childhood in order to think with local, place-based perspectives.
The inclusion of place in early childhood teacher education resituates pedagogy as a thinking, ethical, and political practice. Rethinking early childhood teacher education with strong relations with place recognizes the entanglements with humans and the more-than-human engaging with multiple narratives of a place and acknowledges the politics and knowledges constructed within and about a place. In this sense, pedagogy activates relationality and complexity in early childhood teaching, making visible the multiplicities, tensions, and frictions created when place, human, and more-than human come together. This opens up places for early childhood pre-service teachers to think and act on different ways of knowing, being, and doing with the intent of engagement and relationality.

Matters of Concern

Drawing on Latour (2004), place in early childhood teacher education pays attention to “matters of concern” – a shift from “matters of fact” consistently implemented through quality dominant narratives previously described. Matters of concern think with relationality and the complexity of bringing together humans, place, and the more-than-human (flora, fauna, multispecies), rethinking how early childhood pedagogy is used and how this informs teacher education. In terms of early childhood teacher education, this repositions teacher educators to shift from a human-centered view of the planet to seeing place as central and living with our more-than-human kin. This calls for teacher educators and pre-service teachers to teach and act in radically new ways, in ways that situate place and the more-than-human as being in relation with teaching pedagogies.

Coming Alongside

Karen Martin (2016) presents the idea of “coming alongside” as a way for non-Indigenous people to engage respectfully with Aboriginal worldviews. Part of this work is recognizing how relationships to people, places, and the more-than-human are central. In this sense, relationships take a long time to build and should not be rushed: sitting and listening with elders and walking with places and the more-than-human over long periods are necessary in order to build authentic, respectful connections. Relationships also require intention. For teacher educators and pre-service teachers, there are ethical and political accountabilities to foreground local, Indigenous worldviews in everyday teaching and learning practices. This recognizes place as being more than just a pretty backdrop for children to play in; rather, there are many layers of history that are always present in the places where we live and work. As part of the protocol of coming alongside, teacher educators and pre-service teachers are required to share their stories and connections to people and place.

Common Worlds

A common world framework (www.commonworlds.net) centers on the ways in which children learn from the full range of human and more-than-human relations within their immediate and “common” or shared worlds. More-than-human refers to the animals, plants, multispecies, local places, and colonial pasts, presents, and futures – the systems where children grow, learn, and live. Practices underpinned by the common world framework focus on awareness and response to legacies of local places in order to rethink and create common futures.

Place as a Pedagogical Contact Zone

Place as a pedagogical contact zone brings together the work in the Common Worlds Research Collective (www.commonworlds.net), with the “contact zone” as discussed by Haraway (2008) making visible how place is always an entanglement between the more-than-human and humans. Haraway (2008) specifically indicates how this contact zone brings together “diverse bodies and meanings[that] coshape one another … The partners do not precede the meeting; species of all kinds, living and not, are consequent on a subject and object-shaping dance of encounters” (p. 4). This creates the pedagogical contact zone as uncertain and unknown but also creates a space to support new ways of doing and assembling multiple knowledges. This is necessary in foregrounding and thinking with Indigenous worldviews, shifting away from the narrow view of the colonial gaze. Both place-thought (Watts 2013) and learning to be affected (Latour 2004) offer ways to practice place as pedagogical contact zones.

Place-Thought

Place-thought is rooted in the Anishinaabe (First Nations people from southern Canada) worldview that “is based upon the premise that land is alive and thinking and that humans and non-humans derive agency through the extensions of these thoughts” (Watts 2013, p. 21). This frames the process of thinking about place in different ways and is focused on viewing the land as animate and with agency. Watts (2013) shares an Anishinaabe creation story to illustrate place-thought through the experience of Sky Woman: Sky Woman fell through a hole in the sky, landed on the back of a turtle, and formed the earth. This story for Watts (2013) is an historical account of the interconnections between humans and the more-than-human, describing “a theoretical understanding of the world via a physical embodiment” (p. 21). This moves past the view of a creation story as a myth or allegory and challenges the Euro-Western understanding of knowledge construction. With this foundational understanding, Watts (2013) further notes how land is part of the lives of Indigenous people, and this calls for a deep relationship with the land and the more-than-human requiring communication and care. Colonization of the land impacts the ability to converse with the land, disrupting the deep relationships and a critical part of the Anishinaabe people’s lives.

Learning to Be Affected

Thinking with place means paying attention to the layers of inscription on a place. Using Latour’s (2004) concept of learning to be affected “means exactly that: the more you learn the more differences exist” (p. 213). For early childhood teacher education, this means empowering pre-service teachers to be open and awake to multiple and varied proposals and possibilities. For Latour, this is the action of moving past the binaries of subject/object and spending time with and in the numerous ways of seeing and being in the world. This is reiterated in the work of the common world framework, as it is through awareness of difference that curiosity about the places surrounding us is provoked (www.commonworlds.net). In terms of early childhood teacher education and place, learning to be affected is how teacher educators and pre-service teachers are offered the time and space to listen with the place, make visible what cannot be seen, trace the overlays of inscription, and begin to notice place in a way that rethinks teaching and learning in ethical and political ways.

Early Childhood Teacher Education and Place: An Example in Australia

An undergraduate early childhood teacher education program at a public university in Australia focuses on place; in particular, place as a pedagogical contact zone. Place is the primary provocation for the classes in the program as content and experiences are focused on respectfully foregrounding Indigenous worldviews while completing placement in a community-based playgroup program for families and children (infant to 6-years-old). Coming alongside Indigenous worldviews of place (Martin 2016) is done by attuning to the place where the placement site is located as well as where the university is located. The settler-colonial gaze is disrupted by foregrounding the local Indigenous place, attending to the politics and ethics of living on stolen land. Teaching with complexity, addressing matters of concern, and practicing making-meaning support pre-service teachers in understanding what it means to live in postcolonial Australia. Central to the placement and coursework are pedagogies and opportunities to activate Latour’s (2004) notion of being affected and place-thought (Watts 2013) as ethical teaching practices. For example, at each of the playgroup sites, pre-service teachers respectfully foreground Indigenous worldviews in the learning experiences with children and families.
Indigenous worldviews are the starting point for the class and placement content and are shared through Indigenous stories and materials (sourced from the local place where the program is situated). These experiences include the teachers, families, and children naming the country, animals, and materials where the setting is located. Further, the equivalent conceptual and pedagogical practices are the content in the university classes. This includes understanding the significance of place for the local Indigenous people through the use of place-thought walks, discussions, and making visible how coursework and placement contribute to decolonization and are not tokenistic. For instance, place-thought walks are part of the work for the university students and the children and families in the placement. The ritual of walking to and from the place is part of the practice while also discovering what calls each person into connection with the place. These are the moments that contribute to building a relationship with the place, a common and shared world that moves from thinking about a place to thinking with place. Through the content and experience in the classes and placement, pre-service teachers ethically engage with the local place and find ways to question assumptions and disrupt the Western-driven expectations and dominant narratives in early childhood teacher education.

Hyderabad, the city of pearls and Nizams, has witnessed remarkable growth and transformation in recent years. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and growing economy, Hyderabad has become a thriving metropolis. Behind this remarkable growth lies the untiring efforts of land surveyors who play a crucial role in reshaping the city.
Introduction
Hyderabad, located in the southern part of India, has a long and illustrious history. From being ruled by various dynasties to becoming a major hub for information technology and biotechnology, the city has come a long way. As Hyderabad continues to evolve, land surveyors have emerged as the unsung heroes who help lay the foundation for its development.
Historical Perspective
To truly understand the growth and transformation of Hyderabad, we need to delve into its past. Hyderabad has been a center of trade, culture, and architecture for centuries. The city's architectural marvels, such as the iconic Charminar and Golconda Fort, stand as a testament to its glorious history.
Over time, urbanization and population growth have shaped the city's landscape. Hyderabad has expanded its boundaries to accommodate the growing needs of its residents. This expansion necessitates accurate land surveys that provide a clear understanding of the city's topography and demarcate its boundaries.
The Role of Land Surveyors
Land surveyors in Hyderabad are professionals who play a pivotal role in the development and urban planning of cities like Hyderabad. They are responsible for accurately measuring and mapping land parcels, determining property boundaries, and providing critical data for infrastructure development.
The work of land surveyors is essential in ensuring that urban development projects proceed smoothly. By conducting detailed surveys, they enable architects, engineers, and urban planners to design and execute projects with precision. Their expertise helps prevent encroachments, manage land disputes, and ensure legal compliance.
Urban Planning and Development in Hyderabad
Hyderabad has experienced rapid urbanization, with a significant influx of people seeking better opportunities. This growth presents unique challenges in terms of infrastructure planning and land utilization. Land surveyors are at the forefront of addressing these challenges.
By conducting comprehensive surveys, land surveyors aid in identifying suitable areas for infrastructure development. They provide accurate data on terrain, soil composition, and water bodies, enabling planners to make informed decisions. This data plays a crucial role in developing efficient transportation systems, water supply networks, and other essential infrastructure.
Infrastructure and Land Use Planning
The efficient use of land is a critical aspect of urban development. Land surveyors collaborate with urban planners and architects to determine appropriate land use patterns. They analyze factors such as zoning regulations, environmental impact, and population density to guide the allocation of land for residential, commercial, and recreational purposes.
In Hyderabad, land surveyors work closely with city officials to ensure that land is utilized optimally. They help identify areas suitable for residential complexes, commercial hubs, and green spaces. This holistic approach to land use planning enhances the quality of life for residents and promotes sustainable development.
Ensuring Legal Compliance
Land surveyors also play a vital role in ensuring legal compliance in land transactions. In Hyderabad, where real estate is a booming industry, accurate surveys are crucial for property ownership and transfers. Land surveyors meticulously measure and mark property boundaries, preventing disputes and ensuring smooth transactions.
Furthermore, they help verify the authenticity of land documents and ensure that properties are registered with the appropriate authorities. By providing accurate measurements and maps, land surveyors safeguard the interests of buyers, sellers, and the overall integrity of the real estate market.
Modern Techniques and Technologies
In the age of technology, land surveying has undergone significant advancements. Land surveyors in Hyderabad utilize modern techniques and cutting-edge technologies to enhance their accuracy and efficiency. 2023.06.03 09:33 ShadeStrider12 I visited Britain for a week. Honestly, I think there’s a bit more to my disappointment with Sword and Shield.

I’ll make this clear, even if the subsequent titles were of consistently lower quality, I still hate Sword and Shield as a game. I hate how the gameplay was gutted, I hate the region, and the story makes Ride To Hell: Retribution look well written in comparison.
But let’s put that aside for a moment.
Except for the cities, which are honestly Britain’s lamest feature, Sword and Shield’s wild areas and routes are barely British at all.
Britain’s major strength as a tourist location is its countryside. It’s easily one of the greatest countrysides of any country I’ve ever been to.
Pokémon Sword and Shield barely has any of that. I felt like most of the areas were just green with some trees and lakes pasted here or there. This isn’t Britain’s countryside.
Where the hell are the mountains? The Areas here feel like they could be part of literally any country in Europe and it wouldn’t make a difference. There isn’t really anything screaming “Britain” here.
In fact, it feels like Galar as a whole is only stereotypically British. The devs couldn’t go the extra mile and make it feel like I was in the UK. As a result, I, an Indian, want to apologize to the colonizing scum on behalf of Asia for this affront to British sensibilities.
One thing they could have done was give us a creepier, Majora’s Mask Esque setting that plays off the fact that Britain is said to be the most haunted country in the world. Like a Lavender Town, but this time it’s the entire game. It would have been atmospheric and have given this game a substantial redeeming quality, something this game above all others lacks. I will say that even the worst games have missed potential, and this is something they could have done for the setting.
As it is, Somehow America and France got the better end of the deal. Though if they really wanted to make Black and White American, they could charge you 500,000 every time you healed at the Pokémon center

Phase 0) Digital Economics 101

The Digital Economics 101 module will open 1 week prior to the cohort start date. This is an onboarding module that will get you up to speed so we can get straight into the material. This will be required to finish before the start date.
  • Gain a deep understanding of all of the pieces in the digital economy.
  • Learn about the future of media and code — the front-end and backend of the internet — so you can focus your efforts.
  • Understand digital leverage, distribution, no-code tools, and digital assets so you can take part in the mental & financial wealth transfer.

Phase 1) Creating A Meaningful Niche

Every day I hear people going on and on about trying to find their niche.I also hear people talking about how they don’t know how to combine what they love talking about with what will sell. You already have the answer. You just don’t have the clarity.
  • Develop a long-term strategy to create your own niche — meaning you don’t have to worry about your “competition” playing status games.
  • Discover your life’s work, curiosities, and obsessions. I see too many people that are uncertain about this for years.
  • Cultivate and turn your vision, goals, and values into a brand that attracts an audience you love interacting with (and that will buy from you, and only you).

Phase 2) Content Strategy

There is one thing that separates those who make it in the digital economy and those who don’t.It’s the quality, articulation, and perceived originality of their content. The content you post has to make sense to the people you attract.Everyone has a different voice and tone that they resonate with. That they are congruent with and trust. It has to change their thought patterns or behavior — that’s what makes you memorable. That’s what separates you from the sea of people posting surface-level copy-cat style posts.Example and putting my money where my mouth is:
  • Become an expert-level speaker or writer on the topics you care about.
  • Never run out of content ideas for your posts or promotions (without using content templates — that’s how you stay a commodity).
  • Create posts, blogs, tweets, images, and videos that resonate with other’s on a deep level. People will actually ask you how you got so good at what you do.
  • Separate yourself from the ocean of B-tier creators that struggle to sell their products, services, andhave their ideas stick in the head of their audience.
  • Implement our Epistemic Research Method — which is just a fancy way of saying scientific research method… but it’s for researching your mind to craft brilliant content and product ideas.

Phase 3) Crafting Your Offer

Most people are sitting on a goldmine of skills, experience, and knowledge (that they can use to help people 1-2 steps behind them). That is what people pay for.Considering 95% of the market are beginners… if you are good at something, you can help them get to your level (no matter how “basic” you think the information is).Do you not watch basic content all day anyway? People don’t want new information, they want to be reminded of what works.
  • Use our Minimum Viable Offer strategy to start monetizing immediately (and have something to improve over time, rather than procrastinating until it’s perfect).
  • Have a strategy for reducing the time you spend working over time (as you build leverage and improve your offer).
  • Know how to create your own customers from the audience you are building, instead of “finding” the right customer for your offer.
  • Take the guesswork out of building coaching, consulting, or digital product offers.

Phase 4) Marketing Strategy

You aren’t making money because you aren’t promoting yourself or your offer. That is literally the only way to make money. Have something desirable and consistently put it in front of peoples’ faces. In Phase 4, I will show you how to systemize, automate, and be consistent with simple promotions. You will be able to make money without having the chance of forgetting to do it (or letting fear of failure get in the way).
  • Learn to sell on social media, in your writing, and across different platforms.
  • Have consistent sales coming in while focusing on your meaningful message (no need to sound salesy all the time).
  • Learn advanced automation strategies that you can implement at your own pace, especially once you validate your offer.

Bonus) The Creator Command Center

The Creator Command Center is a Notion template that houses all of the systems. This is how you will manage your brand, content, offer creation, marketing strategy, and systemized promotions for consistent sales.

Bonus) Live Product Build & Launch

In the first Digital Economics Cohort, I built out my course The 2 Hour Writer.I have videos showing how I build it with the strategies in phase 3 and 4.There is a bonus module that shows how I had an $85,000 launch that resulted in my first $100K month.I did this to prove the strategies inside Digital Economics work if you stick to the plan. And, this past Black Friday, I blew my that monthly high out of the water in 4 days. That’s the power of these strategies if you stay consistent with your life’s work.

2023.06.03 09:25 crogonint List of Alternate Barovian Maps which are Needed

I'm pretty sure that the majority of Barovian content creators have already seen some version of this list. I actually went back to update my original post of the list to discover that I never made my own post of it! I put together the first version of this list a couple of years ago. I'm pretty sure this is the most complete list of its kind anywhere: Alternate areas of Barovia that are commonly needed, besides the commonly published CoS specific battlemaps:
0) The (Dark) Carnival - nobody ever makes maps / assets for this, even though gobs of people always throw it in to their campaign, even though it's old as crap. I understand that there's a Carnival Realm in the new VRGtR book.. I'll probably never use the realm-carnival, but that's a second place the Dark Carnival maps/assets could be used. There are also a trio of third party Ravenloft carnival modules as well that they could be used in.
1) Battlemap sized maps of the towns. At LEAST a 5 foot per square / hex map for the tiger chase. (Obviously modern VTT platforms don't actually need the grid on the map. ;) )
2) Random shops, stables, blacksmiths and generic places the party is likely to go anyway.
3) Generic encounter locations.. country roads / rivers / bridges and combinations of the three. It sounds dumb because you can get generic encounter maps like that anywhere.. but it would be AWESOME to have matching Barovian roads and Svalitch woods on all of your encounter maps. Don't forget the specific crossroads with the gallows from CoS.. I don't recall if there were hanging cages mentioned, but you could throw in some PNG options for them.
4) A covered bridge, including the roof, deck and under views. (To tack on to the Headless Horseman add-in.) The Woodcutters hut as well.
5) Besides the Carnival, there are a few other old school modules that people like to bolt on to CoS (Adam, etc. etc.).
6) DragnaCarta, MandysMod and Pyram King have all developed alternate encounters and a handful of setting that might be able to use an alternate map here and there. (Orphanage.) In particular, I recall battles in/near the bogs, on mountain sides with/without roads and watch towers. Military and outfitter style tent interiors and exteriors and camps placed.. you know what? Make those camps be PNG assets that could be dropped in a bog, next to a river or on a mountain side as needed. ;) I recall Lunch Break Heroes making an encounter for Borgia/Borca, but I don't recall if they made any scenarios / encounters for Barovia. I got a special request for Beneath the Abbey.
7) The Interactive Tome of Strahd sends the party back in time and would be a PHENOMENAL set of maps to expand Barovia. Seriously, you could drop those on DMsGuild and make some bank. Some additionally pre-Strahd bright and shiny versions of the village of Barovia and other basic maps might be nice for some throw-back adventures.
8) Retro Castle Ravenloft.. Castle Ravenloft fully restored to its former glory! (Castle Barovia? I picture it as more of a walled garrison, looking like a giant stone bubble from a distance, but it did have at least one tower overlooking the cliff.) We know that the old pre-Strahd castle had multiple floors located in roughly the same place as Castle Ravenloft, but with significantly different floor plans, as the ghosts walk staircases and pass through doorways that don't exist anymore. :D (Important side-note: Strahd did not grow up in Castle Ravenloft. I believe that there is one (1) painting of him looking out over Yesterhill, through the mists at a vision of the castle he grew up in, but I don't think anyone has ever tackled it.)
9) The caverns and the alter area in and under the Pillarstone of Ravenloft (from Expedition to Ravenloft) are frequently added in to CoS. I've never seen a map of a hidden cavern entrance in the Svalitch woods, let alone a set of creepy Barovian caverns.. or the Castle side of the entrance, for that matter.
10) Around a decade ago, some weirdo drew an artistic image of Castle Ravenloft with the foundation bedrock rotted away under it. I'd like to see a detailed elevation map of the curtain wall and gatehouse with the bedrock still under the curtain wall, because that irritates me to no end. NOBODY would build a massive curtain wall on a questionable foundation. Reference Vlads actual castle (which is admittedly ten times smaller than Ravenloft) for a rather specific example of a (THE) castle built on the side of a cliff. As I recall, if looking at the gatehouse, the left side and back left corner of Vlads actual castle are protected by a cliff, and that's where the inspiration for Castle Ravenloft came from.
11)Speaking of elevation, at the other end of Castle Ravenloft are balconies and windows jutting out over the cliff. I'd love to see detailed maps of those areas, an 'ant sized' map of the Svalitch woods and Barovia as seen from the castle, and an elevation map of the cliff-side reaching from the Svalitch woods up past the windows and balconies to the Curtain wall. Parties occasionally decide to attempt to scale the cliff. Having a cliff and curtain wall that actually matches would be awesome.
12) Odd ball areas we never see. The druids must have huts or a village somewhere. The Roc must have a nest somewhere. The Mad Mage in Barovia has one of either a tower / cavern / pocket dimension somewhere. We could use Barovian flavored versions of all three. Oh, and the woods and encounters with said mage on the backside of the lake.. so a lake / forested area with spread out trees for players to run in terror or attempt to attack at range.. or whatever.
13) UNDER Lake Zarovich, there are a handful of generic encounters. There are also a few river monster encounters, generally near the Berez Swamp, could use a lair map and an underwater river encounter map, Barovia flavored. Speaking of Berez, I've never seen a detailed large scale swamp map for the Berez Swamp.. let alone the whole town being overrun by the swamp.
14) A proper Berez Swamp. A full sized swamp, with river banks, fields of cattail and reeds, murky backwaters, underwater groves of trees, and a couple of dozen oddly shaped islets and sandbanks.. a few dead logs.. not to mention a proper full sized assortment of Berez town ruins.
15) What's the village in the Adventurer's Guild Supplements?? Orasnou! There's a tiny village there (the size most people depict Berez as, because the CoS book doesn't describe the whole town of Berez properly). So that map is needed, along with.. 4 interior maps, if I recall? (Probably more, + a manor.) As well as an alternate werewolf lair and a few others, like a Barovian bluff, again if I recall off of the top of my head. I've had requests for the Gundarak villages Teufeldorf, Zeidenburg and Renika, as well as the other minor villages and..
16) The complete map of Barovia, post Grand Conjunction (done in standard modern style/graphics).
17) Various encounters have been depicted on Mount Baratok. Which would be a stark stone mountain, snowy and generally above the treeline, not like the hilly tree covered mountains where Argynvostholt and the Roc and etc. are located. I think a largish rocky encounter map of the mountainside would be the first needed. I (seem to) recall a three tiered monastery built on the side of a cliff, with a freshwater spring enclosed that would require an elevation map along with three small interioexterior maps showing the wooden stairs going up and down the cliff-side. I recall one encounter involving a lai small cave sized area.
18) Lots of people want Van Richtens magic shop and other stuff described in his escapades. We could also use a handful of Vistani Vardos and Camps. If I recall, there are only two described in the CoS book, but there are many more tribes of Vistani than that, and we're told that they move around frequently. If might be easier to provide PNG files for the vardos, outfitter tents and assets for a large scale camp. Come to think of it, there aren't a whole lot of tokens for those smallish horses they use either, so someone might whip up 10-12 smallish shaggy horses with unique patterns to show off. They don't care one ounce for a horses pedigree, and are more than happy to keep unique looking mongrel horses as their personal caravan animals. They use mountain horse stock when breeding their horses, so they would be a bit hairier and stockier then say an Arabian.. just scaled closer to a pony size. Donkey size! They're donkey sized horses. :D ..real donkey size, if I recall 5e has some weirdness going on with their official donkey/wagon sizes that makes no sense at all for Vardos sized horses and wagons like the Vistani would have.
19) The valley where the village of Barovia is located is described as a massive fertile farming area, yet we never see any medieval farms, ranches, graineries or farmers markets for Barovia. Definitely need a few of those. Barovian farmers and ranchers would SPECIFICALLY all have the buildings that (in the real world) later became fortifications, Thick werewolf proof walls and heavily barricaded doors everywhere. No window on the ground floor. Livestock was housed indoors, in enclosed courtyards with family areas wrapped around them, or with the animals on the ground floor and the family living above on the second floor. Horse stalls and farrowing areas would be fenced off within the area. Graineries would be large round wooden buildings with barricaded doors and sturdy out-buildings. 10 foot tall max, today's 4-5 story tall graineries are a modern invention. There would probably be a large stone community grainery far on the other side of the valley from the Village of Barovia. for that matter, there ought to be a functioning grainery or warehouse somewhere between the Village of Barovia and Bonegrinder. ALSO, if Bonegrinder is no longer being used as a mill, there would HAVE to be another windmill or waterwheel driven mill somewhere else in Barovia. Many artists have envisioned a water-wheel grainery on the River Ivlis near the Village of Barovia. Corn cribs would be on the second floor of a barn for drying grain, doubling up to dry bales of hay, not primarily as a hay loft. PNGs for 2-3 styles of fencing and gates, water troughs, and some medieval horse drawn plows and rakes would be nice. Dog kennels!! Every farm would probably have it's own horse pasture or rink with a training post, and a dog kennel or run for dogs to run during the day. You know those giant mastiffs that the Barovian nobles are so fond of? Yeah, the farmers in the fertile valley near Barovia would be the only ones rich enough to be able to afford to raise those pups for the nobles. Somewhere out here would be a medieval rancher set up to raise mastiff puppies with an assortment of full grown mastiffs. Mongrel pups or runts would be sold off to neighboring farms at a discount. Roaming wolves would stay FAR away from them, and werewolf packs would likely attack them for any reason at all (if they could find a way in to the basin). I picture a LARGE farmers market and stockyards just inside the River Ivlis bridge of the Valley of Barovia. We know that Barovia is a trade center.. so there MUST be one. The bridge would offer protection if needed, and it would be the closest place farmers and ranchers could set up to provide commerce with the other villages and domains and still have the protection of being inside the gates. Hmm.. they might have a dirt race track there for showing off horses going up for sale. Make that very probably, The Vistani/Romani are famous for defending their mountain horses at the drop of a hat. This would be the main place of commerce for farmers goods in Barovia. This is (the main area) where Vistani Caravans would import and export farm goods in to and out of Barovia.
20) There would absolutely be homestead (small) sized farms and ranches carved out up in mountain valleys or even on mountain sides facing south. In fact, a south facing mountain side might get enough sunlight to raise delicate crops, spices and herbs, whereas most of Barovia can't, due to the mists blocking the sunlight. Also, a couple of mountain pastures with matching rocks / trees bordering them would be nice. Honestly though, if you pass out some rock and tree assets that match the ones you already use, anybody could throw together their own mountain pastures, or even their own valley pastures. Rows of crops are hard to find though! You could easily have scenarios of wolves/werewolves hunting the party in a cornfield.. but there are no Barovian cornfield battlemaps. ACTUALLY, I don't think I have any battlemap sized crop assets, and I probably have the largest collection of map assets around. You could probably sell these farming assets/maps on DriveThruRPG and DMsGuild as well, I've never seen them anywhere. ..OR you might ask Forgotten Adventures or Tom Cartos to throw some together, whatever seems clever. :) I've been asked specifically to try to get Yaedrag (barbarian-esque village in the mountains that Dragna wrote up) made up.
21) Jenny Greenteeth's Hut.. perhaps a grove of her untainted trees from the Quivering Forest? (Also the Glumpen Swamp and Vanishing Hills, various locations within these.) I picture the Quivering Forest loaded with fruit and nut trees and songbirds fighting for real estate (the text mentions angry squirrels).. surrounded by classic Svalitch Woods half-dead spooky trees. ;) I recall seeing a couple of versions that roughly followed the description given in DDAL04, but they're just a hut, not the whole barrow surrounding her hut as described. Additionally, many artists have upscaled her hut to be a small trading post, and put it on wooden poles, swamp style (never seen a battlemap of it, though). Lots of room for creative renditions there. :)
22) Another thing that I haven't seen ANYBODY making is small abbeys. The hills and mountains of Barovia are said to be littered with small abbeys. ..some of them abandoned, some not.
23) Abandoned mansions and manors. Strahd massacred the noble families of Barovia for their involvement in his father's murder. There is one legend of a nobleman possessed by a demon that Strahd left alive, as a curse 'worse than death'. At any rate, there ought to be a handful of abandoned / haunted mansions and manors dotting the Barovian countryside for the party to stumble in to (or check out due to a hook dropped by an informative villager).
24) There are currently NO mines in the CoS version of Barovia.. bizarre for a mountain country. It would suit that some of those decimated noble families ran some mines that have since been abandoned. Of course, it wouldn't do to host your standard monsters in a Barovian mine. I'm thinking Lair of the White Worm. Something more horrifying than dungeoneering.
25) It's been mentioned that instead of murdering the losers from the werewolf trials, they might be shipped off to be slaves in a mine, or to a plantation in the swamp. The plantation would be stick construction, as you would expect in a swamp, they would collect tubers and reeds that grow in the swamp, not traditional plantation type crops.
26) The various Barovian villages NOT included on Schleys map of (Central) Barovia usually have a town sized map plotted out and published somewhere, but no really decent overview maps or battlemap sized maps of them exist. (This need might easily be filled by a couple of handfuls of generic Barovian village buildings, field-stone and dirt street assets, and sundry village constructions.
27) Besides the Gates of Barovia, there are supposed to be watch-towers dotting the landscape as well. An operational watchtower and a couple of partially ruined ones would be awesome.

Assets nobody has made like the Dark Carnival and lake/river encounters and the Mad Mages various lair options would be the most needed. I simply don't understand why EVERY CoS map developer doesn't provide matching roads, forests, rivers and generic shops with matching Barovian assets. The maps I mentioned which you could make money selling on DriveThruRPG and DMsGuild (to me) would just be silly NOT to make. ...Van Richtens magic shop is requested a LOT. When the party first enters Barovia, I can picture them being chased in to a fortified farm by a pack of dire wolves / werewolves at dusk (perhaps the first couple of farms won't unbarricade their doors). I'm sure you can see the utility of the rest. Will everybody need a Roc nest on a cliff above the forest? No. Will DMs derail their campaign for a minute just for the opportunity to make the party loot a Roc nest? Yes. :
Finally, I would note that since I wrote this list, a few cartographers have added some of the above locations to their Library, but the vast majority of these are as of yet, untouched. :)

2023.06.03 09:18 KlingonTranslator I have concern about my cat repeatedly licking a certain spot.

Hi all,
Information: * Large adult male seal lynx point bengal cat. * Age: 5 * Neutered: Yes * No veterinarian appointment yet. * Past symptoms: Gingivitis. Sensitive stomach. He can yowl after eating and sometimes during eating. Can sound pretty strange and almost like a mating goal. In the past he had bright red blood in stool when food was changed. * Now on grain-free, meat only diet. * Location is Bavaria, Germany. * Weight: 5.8kgs * Current symptom duration: 1-2 months
Here is an Imgur link to two videos of him licking the area.
I'm reaching out to in hopes of gaining some insights and advice regarding my cat's health. Lately, I've noticed a peculiar behavior that has been causing me quite a bit of concern.
My cat has been consistently licking a specific area on his stomach. It's become a daily ritual for him, and he does it at least 10, sometimes 15+ times a day. The fact that he focuses on such a specific spot has me worried.
What adds to my apprehension is the knowledge that snow bengals, like my cat, have a predisposition to cancer. I understand that it might not necessarily be the case here, but the association has certainly amplified my concerns.
I want to ensure that my cat receives the best care possible, so I'm turning to this supportive community for any insights, experiences, or advice you might have. Has anyone else observed a similar behavior in their snow bengal or any other breed of cat? Should I be worried about potential health issues? Are there any preventive measures or specific signs I should be looking out for?
Of course, I plan to consult my veterinarian about this issue. Any input now could help guide me in the right direction and give me peace of mind.
Thank you in advance for your time and assistance. Your support means a lot to me and my furry friend.

2023.06.03 09:00 jnits "Training" commercial - Red Gemini + Tokina Vista

https://vimeo.com/812275362
Submission Statement
This is the first time posting my work here. I went to film school but I have a full time job in software and only shoot 2 to 4 times a year unfortunately. So it's more of a hobby at this point that I'm trying to turn into a career but having trouble finding directors to work with. So that's me.
Regarding the project - this is actually the third commercial I shot for Bruce Clay; the director works for Bruce and I have done a few shorts with him, so it sort of doesn't count but it's nice to have finally done a "not spec" and gotten paid.
Crew was just me and a first AC on a 10 hour day in a location I had never seen before as we couldn't work out a scout day with the owner. In general this project needed more prep between the director and I.
Biggest regret of the day for this one was not getting into the ring and verifying that the sky light above the ring was not dead center above it. I'm not sure the director would have let switch to the other side of the line because the last shot might have had a worse background but I was caught with my pants down after we had done an establishing shot outside the ring (that didn't make the cut) and found myself on the list side of the face once we got in the ring. I should have asked for a stand in.
We barely made the day and we had wanted to get a few more montage shots but we didn't have a good plan ahead of time so it was hard to bang out decent looking shots. I think the hazer was the right choice over all but waiting on haze is the worst.

2023.06.03 08:55 NewKey7956 First time renting a place in Metro Manila and I’m alone. Please help me out

I’m (22F) planning to rent a condo in Metro Manila soon (first time), but I have no idea which location would be ideal. To be specific, I’m looking around Shaw para malapit sa lahat and Pasig but I’m not familiar sa mga locations ng properties.
For context, I’ll be living alone and I want a place sana na walking distance or at least malapit ang grocery/supermarket for my convenience. Okay din na may near areas where I can run/jog and accessible transpo aside from Grab (but not necessarily train). I won’t be working on site and will probably be staying in most of the time but I’m considering the proximity so it won’t be hard for me to go somewhere from my place since I don’t have a car.
My current options are: 1. Avida Centera - 1 bedroom, around 36 sqm. Problem ko lang here is maliit ‘yung kitchen counter and walang balcony, di ba parang suffocating? I don’t have much insights about the property as well. 2. DMCI’s Sheridan, Brixton, Kai Garden, or Prisma - 1 bedroom also. 39 sqm or below. Has balcony. Has bigger kitchen counter. I’m considering DMCI properties because of positive feedbacks about them but I’m not sure sa mga locations if malapit ba sa grocery, restaurants, etc., like Centera. Their slow elevator is also being my concern but I can find a unit in lower floor, I guess. 3. DMCI’s Infina Towers - 1 bedroom. Has balcony. Has bigger kitchen counter. Not sure if may malapit na grocery pero parang wala. 4. Acqua Private Residences - 1 bedroom. Below 30 sqm, too small for my preference really. Partition is clear glass door, which I’m not a fan of.
I haven’t viewed any unit yet; I just look up their street views on Google maps. I want to narrow down my options so I can view units strategically since I’ll be coming from a province in the north pa. I’d like ask for your insights or suggestions about which property dapat ako maghanap ng unit given the considerations I’ve mentioned. Btw, I’m trying to avoid SMDC properties (also because of the feedbacks I’ve read).
Other concerns: I found a unit in Prisma at a great price but it seems like a building is being constructed in front of it. Will that be a big issue? Location is still a concern. Also, this is a bit farther from the center compared to other DMCI properties I mentioned.
I’ve been also trying to look for semi-furnished unit with AC, ref, and cabinet at least so I won’t have to buy them but some units I found are bare and I would have to buy everything. Would you recommend sticking with semi-furnished unit or is it fine to settle with bare unit and buy everything necessary? I’m considering since these bare units have lower prices.
Finally, can you give general tips about renting and looking for a place, please? This entire moving-in and living in the city thing actually scares me, but I have no choice. I would appreciate your replies. Thank you very much.

Repairable Broken Casing (Dyson V11)?
Hi Brilliant Vacuum Enthusiasts! I'm hoping at least one of you can guide/help me here!
I have a Dyson V11 Outsize Origin (Gold) and am located in California, USA. As you can see in the photo below, one of the plastic parts of the casing is now open (the vacuum fell onto the floor from where it was leaned against a wall temporarily). Silly of me, I know, but now the suction isn't as good and when I blocked the main suction tube it seemed like it was also pulling air in through this hole.
I reached out to Dyson customer service and they said that I'd have to repurchase the entire main body/cyclone, which is not only out of stock (and they couldn't tell me when they'd get it back in stock), but also USD$329.99+tax. My closest Dyson authorized service center isn't open until Monday, but I think they're likely going to tell me the same thing. I recognize that Dyson generally prices high, which is unfortunate, but I'm concerned that they can't give me an ETA for when it might be back in stock as I'd like to have a working vacuum...Any suggestions on how to fix it so that the vacuum is usable, or how to fix it and avoid needing to pay the price for an entire new main body?

Note: I'd searched through the subreddit but couldn't find a post on my issue, so I thought I'd try asking. My apologies in advance if I was unable to find prior advice on this due to being new, so I don't know the right lingo/technical words to describe the broken part (happy to delete this post too if it turns out this has been answered a lot previously).

2023.06.03 07:56 lentils234 Crocus blooms in the living room? Kashmir's saffron farmers get creative.

Abdul Majeed Wani uses a flashlight to carefully inspect his blooming saffron crocus plants in red plastic baskets placed on iron racks. He’s deliberately deprived this small room of natural light, covering the windows to “maintain the quality” of the crop.
Mr. Wani is among the first farmers in Kashmir to embrace this relatively new technique of growing saffron indoors, stacked in vertical columns. “It is the third year I am growing saffron inside my house, and the results are very promising,” he says with excitement. “We have got better produce both in quality and quantity.”
Mr. Wani comes from a traditional saffron-growing family from Shaar-i-Shalli, a hamlet located on the foothills of Zabarwan mountains. Most of the people in his village and the surrounding areas have been growing the prized spice for centuries. Saffron is grown in a few places around the world, requiring unique kinds of soil and specific climatic conditions. Kashmir is the second-largest producer after Iran, and saffron cultivation is seen as a symbol of Kashmiri culture.
Although the demand for Kashmiri saffron – which can cost $10,000 per kilogram (2.2 pounds) – is growing, the region has witnessed a steady decline in its production. Farmers and industry experts blame the fast-growing construction in and around the saffron fields, as well as climate change and regional conflict. But government support and breakthroughs in indoor cultivation are offering farmers hope
“The new technique has raised huge hopes in us,” says Javaid Ahmed, another saffron farmer from Pampore who’s embraced indoor farming. “No matter how erratic rain or how early we receive snowfall, there is now more probability for our saffron to bloom in better ways.”
Agricultural intervention
In 1996, more than 14,000 acres of land were used to grow saffron in Kashmir, according to Department of Agriculture data. Over the next couple decades, that number dwindled to 6,000, and production decreased by nearly 90% from 16 metric tons to 2 metric tons, much of which is attributed to climate change.
“In the past 20 years, we have been witnessing untimely rainfalls and extreme weather events, like sudden rise or fall in temperatures,” says Mr. Wani. In 2014, devastating floods cost Kashmir’s saffron industry about $127 million.
Climate change isn’t the only issue disrupting saffron farming. The Himalayan region is marred by conflict, with India and Pakistan both controlling portions of Kashmir while claiming the majority-Muslim territory in its entirety. In the Indian-administered areas, clashes between separatist rebels and Indian security forces have cost thousands of lives and brought huge distress to the people, who are largely dependent on farming.
Still, there is cause for hope. Since the government launched its “Mission on Saffron’’ in 2010, traditional farmers have gained access to new resources, including the India International Kashmir Saffron Trading Centre (IIKSTC) in Pampore. IIKSTC aims to streamline saffron production, with facilities to separate and dry stigmas (the part of the crocus from which the spice is derived) for auction, as well as provide better marketing avenues and secure higher prices for farmers.
The center fixes auction rates based on stigma quality, and certifies the authenticity of Kashmiri saffron sold in India and abroad. This sort of quality regulation is critical, say farmers, to combat the proliferation of cheaper “Kashmiri saffron” knockoffs and preserve the spice’s reputation as the best saffron in the world.
In addition to these post-harvest supports, the government is working to safeguard remaining farmland from development and provide farmers with better irrigation facilities, such as tube wells and sprinklers. Meanwhile, scientists in the region have stepped in to reduce their reliance on the land altogether.
How to grow a saffron plant – indoors
Traditional farmers plant their saffron corms, or bulbs, in the fall. The saffron crocuses should bloom the following November, at which point farmers can pluck its flower and harvest the bright red stigma. This cycle repeats for about 3 to 5 years before the original corm decays, leaving behind new bulbs to be planted.
Yet erratic weather can affect that year’s bloom, leading to massive losses if a farmers’ crop fails. Climate changes also result in fewer new corms, explains Mr. Wani, leading to a gradual decline in production.
Hoping to safeguard his family’s farm, Mr. Wani signed up for training at the Advance Research Station for Saffron & Seed Spices, a government initiative affiliated with Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) in Srinagar. There, he learned how to protect his saffron plants during their most vulnerable period.
“Under this new method, we remove the saffron corms from soil a few weeks before the harvest time and place them in these trays inside a room, which has no direct sunlight,” says Mr. Wani.
The sheltered flowers bloom as usual, and after the saffron is harvested, he puts the corms back in the soil.
“The corms need a chilling period of more than 1,000 hours, and the temperature should be below zero degrees [Celsius],” says Bashir Ahmad Elahi, a scientist at SKUAST and head of the research team studying local saffron trends and solutions.
Despite promising results, there are some apprehensions among farmers, as the saffron corm recommended for indoor cultivation is quite large, weighing more than 10 grams.
“We don’t get that type of corm usually,” explains Mr. Ahmed, noting that about 80% of the saffron corms available to farmers are too small for indoor use.
Still, he and other farmers see value in pursuing a hybrid of traditional and vertical farming.
“In a small room, one can produce saffron that would be traditionally cultivated over one kanal [about 3 basketball courts] of land,” he adds.
Hope beyond Kashmir’s saffron fields
Kashmir’s 2021 saffron yield reached a two-decade high of 15.04 metric tons, which farmers partly attribute to good weather, but also better irrigation methods as well as indoor cultivation and other government supports. Available reports on 2022 harvests suggest further growth, though the government has yet to release any official data.
The improving prospects for Kashmir’s saffron farmers have kindled hope at a time when the region’s other major economic source – apple farming – is in crisis, due to similar challenges of erratic weather, plummeting prices, and poor connectivity to Indian markets.
While the vertical farming techniques aren’t directly applicable to Kashmir’s numerous orchards, some say the saffron industry’s progress is proof that with government support and a bit of innovation, farmers can survive difficult times.
For their part, the local horticulture department has already been promoting high-density apple varieties from Europe, which yield more produce and have an earlier harvesting period, helping farmers avoid the early snowfalls that can decimate apple crops.

2023.06.03 07:50 Mediocre_Rent_2190 Need some advice, in way too deep.

I'm a 20-year-old who took a gap year to explore my career options and ended up in IT. Currently, I find myself in a challenging situation. I've been entrusted with managing approximately 100 users and 150 endpoints across four locations and a remote call center. Unfortunately, I only have the support of two part-time help desk/admin assistant techs. The infrastructure setup I inherited is quite poor and barely functional. I'm looking for advice on where to start and what resources to consult. As a non-profit organization, budgeting is critical. Let me break down the locations for better understanding:
  1. Main Office - Single floor (30-35 users):
    • Around 15 desktops, some shared and some individual
    • Approximately 25 laptops used as primary and secondary devices
    • 10 desktops used for community and educational purposes
    • Miscellaneous equipment: 4-5 Android devices, 3 Smart Boards, 4 printers with fax functionality, 6 analogue phones (to be replaced soon)
    • Infrastructure: 1 HP Switch and a Fortigate firewall to manage, along with a server running Active Directory (AD), file management, and accounting
    • We use Roundcube as our mail client, but our file server is in disarray, with some office members relying on Google Drive instead.
Satellite Office - 1 Room: - 1 desktop, 3 laptops, and a printer for 4 users - Minimal activity, separate network setup recently integrated into Azure AD
Community Project Office - 4 Rooms: - 6 laptops, 2 printers, 8 Android devices, a main call center phone, and 2 hotspot devices - Requires extensive support, especially for the 6 users considered the most demanding - This location manages the 4th office. I've implemented Intune and basic policies for everyone. While I'm still learning the ecosystem, I haven't deployed apps remotely yet due to the limited number of devices.
Client Booths - 2 sectioned off areas in nearby locations: - Operational for 12 hours every day, no holidays - 40 users on a rotating schedule, with 10 call center users working from home - Equipment: 12 laptops, 2 printers, and 12 phones for the booths, 10 laptops, and 10 phones for the call center - I personally set up these locations, ensuring everything is organized and ready for proper configuration, although they currently run on minimal resources.
To improve security, I've implemented good password and multi-factor authentication policies. However, I still believe I haven't reached industry standards yet, though I'm on the right track. My current focus is on installing remote software on all devices, migrating non-domain joined devices to Azure AD, and transferring users who don't require file server access. I haven't been able to implement a hybrid setup due to the outdated server, which desperately needs updates and hasn't been restarted in two years. Additionally, I'm facing challenges in locating the accounting software's database among numerous folders scattered on the drive. I'm also working on upgrading the internet connection from two 50/10 lines to a fiber line with a 50/10 backup. Furthermore, I'm researching options for refurbishing the phones, including self-hosted or managed VOIP, on-premises PBX, or a hybrid setup through the ISP.
I've also encountered printer issues, which I've started addressing by relocating users to the network where the printers are located. Previously, there was a printer sharing configuration that caused problems, with printers appearing on a different network within the same building. This setup resulted in users being able to print only one job before having to delete the printer. With so much that needs improvement, I'm not sure where to draw the line. There's a lot to be done, and I'm struggling to create a comprehensive overview of the current infrastructure and develop my proposals.
If anyone knows of any websites or videos that could help me gain a better understanding of the entire picture and effectively process the information, I would greatly appreciate it.
