Axle-swapping an F700 the only way to defeat the Lucas Girling Brake System??

Howdy all đŸ€
If I had a time machine, the first thing I'd do is buy an '82 truck instead of an '87. The second thing I'd do is toss a molotov cocktail through the window of the Lucas-Girling Brake System manufacturing plant.
As have many before me, I've found myself stuck in a hyrdo-boosted stalemate with my brakes. Not only did I have to crack my drums in half to even get them off (due to the shoes holding them captive) but my wheel cylinders were also so rusted out that I couldn't even read the casting numbers. No chance of rebuilding them. Replacement parts were way more than I could afford ($1800 per side) so I held the line and waited for a savior.
Seven months later and the tides of the war may finally be changing. Yesterday, I happened upon a majestic axle from Craigslist that had come off an '82 F700. It came with a full set of re-treaded tires and rims, a working 2-speed differential, and, most importantly, a set of drum brakes that were just simply... drum brakes. Nothing fancy, just springs and cylinders. With this one axle, I will put an end to the hydraulic tyranny of the Ford-Lucas-Girling axis.
I'm sure that getting MY axle off and getting THIS axle on will be a massive headache, but it is my hope that this one final headache will save me from all the future headaches I'd have fixing and maintaining the factory system.
https://i.redd.it/r3qho5uhhgra1.gif
I am now reaching out for guidance and direction on how to go about the swap. Here's what I have so far:
Observations:
- Both my axle and the donor axle are the exact same length at 7' wide, should be a good match - My axle and the donor axle have identical leaf spring mounts, with matching bolt patterns, and the distance between the mounts is the same at 34" (in other words, I'm fairly confident they will bolt right on) - Donor axle has a motor mounted to it for (I'm assuming) switching between diff. speeds - Donor axle's u-joint is in tact, and it looks like the drive shaft was cut with a cutoff wheel
Questions:
  1. Driving the axle Bolting the axle to the frame via the leaf spring mounts seems straightforward enough, but how do I connect my drive shaft to this differential? Do I use my u-joint, or the donor's? Where exactly should my original parts end and the donor parts start? What additional parts are required?
  2. Brake lines I'm still needing to do new brake lines for the rear brakes (old ones were rusted and full of holes) but assuming I do that, and lines are new, is connecting the donor brakes as simple as running them to one of the two valves on the master cylinder? The original master cylinder has two holes– one for front and one for rear. I've already serviced the front brakes with new discs, calipers, pads, and lines, and connected them to the frontmost of the two holes, and when I plugged the rear hole with a bolt, and bled them (no rear brakes connected) I was able to get solid brake pressure just on the fronts. Can I just take out my placeholder bolt on the second hole and run a line to the brake line splitter mounted on the donor axle, bleed them, and have working brakes? (I will obviously replace the shoes and check out the cylinders, and potentially reseal them if necessary). I guess my question is– can I salvage the master cylinder off the Lucas Girling system and use it for these ordinary brakes, or do I need to get a new MC?
  3. Controlling the differential How do I control and use the 2 speeds of the differential? I see that the motor canister on the diff has leads for power wires, so does an Eaton-specific control switch need to be installed, connected to the battery, and routed to the cab? I've seen pictures of older F700's with a dash-mounted plunger switch which I assume is to control the differential. I've also seen trucks with 2 shifters with one being for the transmission, and the other for the differential. Since the canister on the differential is electronically controlled, it doesn't seem like it a mechanical shifter lever is necessary, but rather an electronic switch. Furthermore, how would I actually drive with this differential? Does it become a sequential 10-speed? 1 low, 1 high, 2 low, 2 high, and so on? Or do I use low for city driving and high for highway? Does the clutch need to be in when flipping the switch?
  4. Parking brake How can I install a drive-line parking brake? I'm assuming that is what came with the '82 truck seeing as they were spared from the horrors of the Lucas Girling hydraulic parking canisters. It was a nightmare getting mine to back off so I could remove them. I personally will just always park the car in 1st, but I know the safe thing to do is to have a parking brake, so should I start searching for a junkyard '82 F700 to harvest the driveline brake off of? Will it fit on my driveline? Is there a generic one-size-fits-all driveline parking brake alternative?
Closing:
I would be more than grateful for any assistance any of you can offer. With your help we can defeat Lucas Girling once and for all, while also providing a sort of template/guide for others with Lucas Girling brakes that want to ditch the convoluted system for good.
Cheers,
Trever

2023.04.02 13:06 brachika High heart rate post op

Hello!
I'm 10 weeks post op, having a new valve in me.
Everything is good, apart from my heart rate which doesnt seem to go lower than 90 unless I'm sleeping (it hovers around 80-85 then if my smart watch is to be believed). The usualy heart rate is around 95-100. My blood work is ok apart from the fact that I'm slightly anemic (I started taking iron pills two weeks ago)
I'm on Verapamil post op (I was on beta blockers which worked only slightly better, and my cardiologist switched to Verapamil) currently and my doctors seem to think it will go down as the time passes, but I feel like it is stuck at around 95 for quite some time now. I was thinking of hearing another opinion.
Is this normal and what are your experiences? I was hoping to go back to being active but with my HR being a bit on the high side, I am still reluctant.

2023.04.02 12:09 JustNeedHelpReddit Psilocybin and valvulopathy. Am I risking development of valvular heart disease from prolonged use? Need advice!

Background

I recently experienced heart palpitations for the first time in my life during a 5g cubensis trip. At the peak I was peacefully listening to music and I felt my chest jump.. I ignored it and it happened again just 1.5 minutes later but this time I clearly felt my heart stop for a second and then rapidly expand. The palpitations started getting stronger and it continued for about a hour until I took Magnesium (250mg) & Calcium (400mg).
The next day I felt tightness/slight pain in my chest and I went to the doctor. The blood pressure test came out fine as well as EKG. However, the doctor mentioned that there is a slight interference between my heartbeats at times, it's hard to spot but it's there. They told me my heart valves most likely lost sync which causes minor irregularity to the heartbeat (arrhythmia) and is nothing to worry about since it heals in a couple of weeks to months. Luckily I felt like I was back to normal just after a couple of few weeks.
I took a break from psychedelics for 3 months and just last week I tried again. The issue returned.. During the peak I experienced palpitations which were worse than the last time. This time the heart was racing and clicking between the palpitations. I took a paracetamol which increases vasodilation and the issue went away after a couple of minutes. My hands/feet felt colder than usual and my left arm felt slightly numb but it might be unrelated/just paranoia from scanning for issues.
Like the last time I felt chest tightness the next day. It's only been a couple of days and it's getting better again but sometimes I can feel heart flutter and micro clicks from my heart just during the evening.

Explanation?

There's a few posts which outlines the effects of 5-HT2B agonists (like LSD-25 / Psilocybin / DMT) on the heart. In particular I found u/SoulGuy60's post and u/iGenie's comment to be very helpful.
It mentions that prolonged activation of 5-HT2B has been linked to valvular heart disease (VHD) in studies on mice. This means that stimulation of this receptor leads to growth in heart valve tissue, which can lead to hardening of the valves (i.e. cardiac valvulopathy). This is concerning me since that's precisely what my doctor mentioned; my heart valves lost sync.
Furthermore I found a couple of posts mentioning vasoconstrictive effects associated with psychedelics which could explain why my feet/hands felt cold and left arm numb.
There are no real human trails to support any of this since there haven't been any studies yet as far as I know.

Some other explanations which I've come across are:
A lot of people warn that this might just be anxiety but I've tripped more times than I can count and I've never had anything like this. I fear this might be a warning sign of a more serious heart disease which is slowly developing from prolonged use of psychedelics or perhaps something that I'm doing wrong?

My lifestyle

Advice?

Now I'm really sad that I can't continue to improve my well-being with psychedelics if it's risking my health..
Does anyone have any experience with this or more information?
Perhaps there's a way to mitigate this issue by supplementing something before & after a trip?

2023.04.01 05:35 Kentukkis How Faceit Ruins esports Dreams (#FaceitFIXit 2023). The cry of the soul of thousands of CIS players and not only. PART 2

We have learnt all the main problems of the platform. And as we managed to find out, in fact, 40 percent of the platform pursue only one goal: boost elo at any cost.
In general, I like the phrase "elo at any cost" the most. What can I say if I, a person who wants comprehensive development in the game, am already tired of fighting off the claims of haters, smurfs, new accounts, pack of abusers and other dishonest people who, like drug addicts, start the same record, "azaza, you are an eternal 2k prisoner, how people can watch you".
And I decided to try the easiest way that most of you use. I started to play with guys who fit my internal criteria.
Neither new accounts, nor 4k elo tryharders, but ordinary guys. I, at that time a 2200 elo player, was forced to hammer 3k elo players for a couple of weeks how to properly play elementary default on maps.
RachelR: "Listen, please. Here we have 2 absolutely similar situations. When -HexaR- went lurking, when he shouldn't have done it. But you're going anyway. How Zhenya should watch everything? He's helping you somehow. He's strafing there, trying to watch something, seeing you off, you know? Your lurking. It is initially wrong, it should not have been in principle. But he's trying to help you. Because of you, he is being killed, damn it. And the two of you are being buried on the ramp precisely because of you, because of this move. And then the next move: he's ALREADY in the gap, he's not on the ramp, he's already in the gap. You're sitting on 50 cent, watching smoke. You're just looking at the smoke. Not even strafing. 2 absolutely identical situations. Absolutely! You're playing CS like playing dm. Here you have launched dm, shooting. You're only looking through your scope. And you press the buttons, you kill someone. Only here you still have grenades. Well, a map is neither Mirage nor Dust2, some new textures. Well, run and shoot. Great. You kill someone there, you find frags, but what's the use, where is the impact of these frags? Well, it's just, I say, guys, it shouldn't be that you have 2200 elo noob, a YouTuber, telling you off like that."
I was looking for the rounds, I was watching the demos with them, and in the end, literally in 60 matches, I managed to up almost 500 elo without any strain.
And do you know what amused me the most in this situation? The system of elo came to us from chess. And if in chess elo shows the real level of the player, then CS is still a team game in which, in fact, little depends on you alone.
And those who play chess will understand me perfectly. Just imagine if a beginner in chess of 1500 elo was telling a world-class grandmaster how to walk a knight on a chessboard.
Yes, the example seems absurd, but in fact it is. I have 2200 elo on Faceit, and I have to, in fact, re-teach the guys to play CS, because apart from shooting, they, in fact, did not know anything. Not did not know, did not attach importance to it, probably.
There was an inflation of elo on Faceit like 2 years ago. Level 10 can be obtained by getting 2000 elo, but there are already as many as 15 thousand people in the European Faceit with 3k elo or more.
It's time to update the system of elo, or adjust it, because if we don't do this in the next year or two, then we will already start receiving players who have 10k elo.
I have already touched on how to recycle the elo system in the clauses above. Either add solo and team rating, or limit people's search for a map after reaching certain elo, or change the system of ruthless balance to +25 and -25 elo.
Something needs to be done. I would even say it is necessary. But instead, Faceit has been trying for many years to deal with, in quotes, toxicity in lobby chats or in matches itself with the help of some bot with artificial intelligence, at the same time absolutely not touching and not recycling those systems that need it most.
Elo at the moment equals prestige in real life. Like an expensive car in the modern world.
If you are a streamer with elo below 3000, then you are considered a noob and no one will watch you. But the problem is that no one ever looks at how this streamer got these numbers.
Personally I am ready to sit on low elo for at least a few more years, but I will be honest, first of all, with myself.
Modern elo does not reflect the skill of the player. Modern elo reflects only the approximate level of the player's shooting. And not always.
ATTITUDE TO THE CIS REGION
If speaking out everything that has accumulated, then you probably don't need to stop.
I'm probably going to take too much on myself now, and forgive me for that, but I want to speak on behalf of the entire CIS community.
And no, I will not speak for Russia. I will speak for Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, Uzbekistan, etc. I think that our region is treated absolutely badly.
We take the 71st season of the European FPL and look at how many esports players have played in this hub over the past month.
There were 85 of them. How many of them are CIS players? 18! I.e. every fifth player represents our region.
But FPL is probably too much. There are still quite celestial being there, so let's look at something closer, namely FPL-C.
People are already playing more actively here. 181 active players per month. 59 of them represent the CIS region, which is 32% of the active audience of the hub!
If this does not mean anything, then let's just take the last qualification in FPL-C, in which both trips to the coveted pro hub were taken by CIS players.
If even now Faceit considers us not worthy of more comfortable conditions for the game, then we take the rating from the European Face It.
19 out of 50, i.e. almost half of the players, represent the CIS region.
If that's not enough, then let's take the very top top.
We take the 20 best players in the world according to the HLTV rating for 2022 and are being surprised that as many as 7 people, i.e. 35%, are CIS guys.
Dear Faceit, do you know where the city Almaty is located?
It is one of the largest cities in Kazakhstan. Do you know what ping is there? Minimum 100! Almaty
Why for so many years you didn’t try to help one of the strongest and largest regions of your platform and still have not even tried to make servers, not in Moscow, in light of events in the world I understand that this is simply impossible, but at least in the same Kazakhstan or Georgia?
Why exactly should we put up with discomfort?
Look at your grid of servers in America, where a minimum number of players play, but it covers absolutely the entire area of the region. America servers
While your huge audience from Siberia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia and other countries is forced to play on servers that are very compactly located in small Europe? small Europe?
Yes, I do not dispute that you gave us the opportunity to play on Moscow servers in separate CIS hubs, but, again, for a fee. Of course, you don't care, and you won't even try to fix this really important problem, but I couldn't help but mention it.
For our region, CS is a ticket to life, just like conditional football in poor countries. It is our players who have the most exorbitant motivation to develop in this game.
And instead of expanding your audience at the expense of the most motivated people in CS, you don't care about us and think that it is okay. Yes, of course.
Although what am I talking about? If Valve has already united our region with Europe and removed a separate CIS qualification for the major, while 2 of the last 3 majors were won by CIS guys.
Therefore, in principle, I understand that Faceit will not help us.
If not Faceit, then what? Unfortunately, nothing. Even if ESEA with its huge finances could not beat Faceit in fair competition, then, to be honest, I do not believe that anyone else can.
Well, we won't play MM on 64 tickrate against cheaters in every game. Our Fastcup-type counterparts, unfortunately, are not even close to Faceit.
It just so happened that Faceit is a monopolist, and monopoly never leads to good.
The ultimate idea of monopoly is not to allow new platforms to develop and at the same time not to get into what is already in demand. Faceit will start moving only when it will have a powerful competitor.
And personally I see the only way out is the release of the source 2 in CS itself, and the addition of a completely new and redesigned matchmaking by the Valve themselves with huge investments in anti-cheat and with listening to the audience.
After all, as far as I know, Dota and Valorant were able to make an interesting and attractive matchmaking, then why they haven't done it in CS yet – I don't understand.
I hope someday we will see something like this happen in CS. But until then, it seems, we will have to put up with all the problems of Faceit, because anyway, no matter what, we love this asshole.
A participant of the challenge: « Well, in general, I'm glad that we have Faceit. Really. Because there are some possibilities. We have to thank the universe. I'm not joking. This is not sarcasm. If not Faceit, then what? Where else would you get the opportunity to try to achieve something in CS? It is clear that this platform can be improved. In short, yes, there were moments when I already thought I wanted to quit this platform when I was performing a solo challenge, but in the end I thought that I've been playing solo all my life and, in principle, I had to get used to it. And finally, I got used to it, calmed down, came to terms with it and now I'm playing solo Faceit not suffering. You have to love Faceit. Love what you do. And then Faceit will love you for sure.»
Why did I make this text? Well, it's probably a childhood dream to reach out to the head manager, who, perhaps, after watching this video, will decide to do good, if I can say so, from people - for people.
And I couldn't help but speak out, because a lot had accumulated on my soul. I am not indifferent to CS, and I am not indifferent to Faceit, because it is, in fact, the good platform.
But most of all I care about guys who, just like me, spend thousands of hours on CS for the sake of some of their goals.
And the only thing I want is for these thousands and tens of thousands of hours to be spent for them in a pleasant, honest and fair game, and not behind garages with a jar of yaga with boosters, smurfs and bullying for small elo.

2023.04.01 00:58 MasonCountyMason Nucor Maintenance Mechanic

Good evening fellow Redditors,
Nucor announced they will be building a mill near my home town in rural WV along the Ohio river.
I am currently a Maintenance Mechanic at a coal fired power plant across the river and because my plant is old and I’m only 32 I’m looking to make the jump to Nucor if I get the opportunity.
My skill set is largely pump rebuilds, coupling alignments (16 point and laser), limitorque rebuilds, valve rebuilds/installs, plumbing air, water, steam lines, layout and fab work, install and fit Babbitt bearings, and a little bit of hydraulics.
What skills do I need to sharpen or learn to make me a valuable maintenance guy in the steel industry?
And I hate to even ask, but right now I earn around 110-120 gross annually. Usually around 500-700 hours of OT. Is that on par with the pay in the steel industry?

I've focused on making it so you can swing the rear into a drift easily to make the tight turns while being stable on the straight portions. It is a bit slow off the line but nothing to bad since it doesn't wheel spin when you floor it at a stop. Also as an added bonus the speeds it reaches (60 to 100) is the sweet spot for the call outs.

2023.03.31 16:59 JohnnyUpright9 Pressure fermenting beer?

I have a 30 litre distiller. I make beer in it as you can chop and change attachments. Do I need to do more than add an appropriate pressure release valve to the tank to do pressure fermentation?
It has 1/4 inch internal 1/2 inch external screw in fittings.
I use US-05 yeast. 4kg of malted barley, 1kg of rolled oats and then the water for my beer (about 22 litres). I add hops in the boil.
I see one possible advantage as being able to leave the tank in my garage (temperatures down to 10c at night) since pressure ferments can handle this temperature.
How long would I expect the ferment to take?

2023.03.31 09:22 Cali4UGirl 2006 Chrysler Pacifica Noise

I bought my 2006 Chrysler Pacifica touring in almost 2 years ago on a whim for $1800. It has 191k miles, an automatic transmission, and is a V6. For about the last 6 months whenever my car is running, it makes this god-awful high pitched squealing noise. I’ve replaced the belt, screen in the power steering pump, the front 6 of the intake valves on the cylinders, and all of the spark plugs. Along with the catalytic converter, I’ve had some exhaust issues fixed as well as normal maintenance issues like brakes and suspension. A family friend does all of the work, so I know it’s not someone just trying to scam me out of my money. The problem is is that the noise isn’t 100% constant. 99% of the time my car is running, it’s squealing, but very far and few between it’s silent and all you can hear is the exhaust. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the engine. I’ve read a few articles that it might be the alternator, or even the power steering pump and pulley. I haven’t noticed any problem with my alternator and the last time I checked my battery, it was 85%. Any ideas help. TIA

2023.03.31 04:10 Sammodile Code/practice for fueling trailer-mounted gasoline engine?

We have gasoline engines mounted on a flat bed trailers; the crews fill up the engine by pouring gas from standard polymer gas containers into the engine fuel tank. They typically stand on a concrete surface, but I can imagine they sometimes stand on the deck of the trailer. Is there an issue, specifically a code, regarding electrical risks, and bonding/grounding for this practice? We have several of these trailers; the engine powers a hydraulic pump used for valve actuators.

2023.03.31 02:11 amazing_fantastic_ 2020 XLE roof leak not covered under warrenty

I bought this car a month ago (pre-owned certified) and found out that my roof was leaking water. After some research, the cause of of the leak is from the roof rails.
I took it to my local dealership because not only I have a roof leak, the "Engine Maintenance Required" message keep popping up.
The dealership called me and said that they can fix the "Engine Maintenance Required " issue and have parts for it (coolant bypass valve), but the warranty cannot cover the leak.
The reason is, since my vehicle is pre-owned, the warranty can cover from 85% to 90% of the exterior.
Question: Anyone that owns a pre-owned Rav4 with the water leakage from the roof, did they fix this issue under warranty? Did they also replace the headliner?
TIA

Primary Credit allows banks to borrow against collateral at the current federal funds rate:

5% expensive money! Probably why BTFP getting used more--it offers 'better terms'?

Overview:

Federal Reserve lending to depository institutions (the “discount window”) plays an important role in supporting the liquidity and stability of the banking system and the effective implementation of monetary policy. By providing ready access to funding, the discount window helps depository institutions manage their liquidity risks efficiently and avoid actions that have negative consequences for their customers, such as withdrawing credit during times of market stress. Thus, the discount window supports the smooth flow of credit to households and businesses. Providing liquidity in this way is one of the original purposes of the Federal Reserve System and other central banks around the world.

The "Primary Credit" program is the principal safety valve for ensuring adequate liquidity in the banking system. Primary credit is priced relative to the FOMC’s target range for the federal funds rate and is normally granted on a “no-questions-asked,” minimally administered basis. There are no restrictions on borrowers’ use of primary credit.
https://www.frbdiscountwindow.org/Pages/General-Information/Primary-and-Secondary-Lending-Programs.aspx
Here are some examples of common borrowing situations:
  • Tight money markets or undue market volatility
  • Preventing an overnight overdraft
  • Meeting a need for funding, including a short-term liquidity demand that may arise from unexpected deposit withdrawals or a spike in loan demand
The introduction of the primary credit program in 2003 marked a fundamental shift - from administration to pricing - in the Federal Reserve's approach to discount window lending. Notably, eligible depository institutions may obtain primary credit without exhausting or even seeking funds from alternative sources. Minimal administration of and restrictions on the use of primary credit makes it a reliable funding source. Being prepared to borrow primary credit enhances an institution's liquidity.
I wonder which institution(s) are seeking “no-questions-asked” "no restrictions on borrowers’ use of primary credit." to the tune of to the tune of $88.157 billion this past week @ 5.00%?
The sudden rise in Primary Credit shows big players are trying to get as much liquidity backstop as possible and are increasing their borrowing from the Fed, happily paying 5.00% to borrow billions. These are not cheap loans...
I do wonder if this trickles further into BTFP and down into Secondary and Seasonal Credit as this goes on?

Central Bank Liquidity Swaps

https://www.newyorkfed.org/markets/desk-operations/central-bank-liquidity-swap-operations
Tool 3/15 3/22 3/29
Central Bank Liquidity Swaps $.47 billion $.59 billion $.5875 billion

About Central Bank Liquidity Swaps:

In April 2009, the Federal Reserve announced foreign-currency liquidity swap lines with the Bank of England, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and the Swiss National Bank.

The Federal Reserve lines constitute a part of a network of bilateral swap lines among the six central banks, which allow for the provision of liquidity in each jurisdiction in any of the six currencies should central banks judge that market conditions warrant. In October 2013, the Federal Reserve and these central banks announced that their liquidity swap arrangements would be converted to standing arrangements that will remain in place until further notice.

How it works:

In general, these swaps involve two transactions. When a foreign central bank draws on its swap line with the Federal Reserve, the foreign central bank sells a specified amount of its currency to the Federal Reserve in exchange for dollars at the prevailing market exchange rate. The Federal Reserve holds the foreign currency in an account at the foreign central bank. The dollars that the Federal Reserve provides are deposited in an account that the foreign central bank maintains at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. At the same time, the Federal Reserve and the foreign central bank enter into a binding agreement for a second transaction that obligates the foreign central bank to buy back its currency on a specified future date at the same exchange rate. The second transaction unwinds the first. At the conclusion of the second transaction, the foreign central bank pays interest, at a market-based rate, to the Federal Reserve. Dollar liquidity swaps have maturities ranging from overnight to three months.

When the foreign central bank loans the dollars it obtains by drawing on its swap line to institutions in its jurisdiction, the dollars are transferred from the foreign central bank's account at the Federal Reserve to the account of the bank that the borrowing institution uses to clear its dollar transactions. The foreign central bank remains obligated to return the dollars to the Federal Reserve under the terms of the agreement, and the Federal Reserve is not a counterparty to the loan extended by the foreign central bank. The foreign central bank bears the credit risk associated with the loans it makes to institutions in its jurisdiction.

The foreign currency that the Federal Reserve acquires is an asset on the Federal Reserve's balance sheet. Because the swap is unwound at the same exchange rate that is used in the initial draw, the dollar value of the asset is not affected by changes in the market exchange rate. The dollar funds deposited in the accounts that foreign central banks maintains at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York are a Federal Reserve liability.

Last week the operations became daily: Coordinated central bank action to enhance the provision of U.S. dollar liquidity

Source: https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/pressreleases/monetary20230319a.htm
The Bank of Canada, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, the European Central Bank, the Federal Reserve, and the Swiss National Bank are today announcing a coordinated action to enhance the provision of liquidity via the standing U.S. dollar liquidity swap line arrangements.**To improve the swap lines' effectiveness in providing U.S. dollar funding, the central banks currently offering U.S. dollar operations have agreed to increase the frequency of 7-day maturity operations from weekly to daily. These daily operations will commence on Monday, March 20, 2023, and will continue at least through the end of April.**The network of swap lines among these central banks is a set of available standing facilities and serve as an important liquidity backstop to ease strains in global funding markets, thereby helping to mitigate the effects of such strains on the supply of credit to households and businesses.

Remember, the Swiss National Bank had used this facility 10 times since September for 7-day swaps totaling $20.738 billion:

2023.03.30 21:17 nackbaxster14 Would you buy this truck if you were me?

Hi there. I have been looking for a used truck for quite some time and am new to all things cars so I thought I'd come and ask the experts here. Basically I want something that can hold me my wife and my new baby, able to carry a good load in the bed, and has 4wd. I saw this car for sale on the side of the road where I live. You can read the description but after talking to the seller this is the main deal. This was a 2013 F-150 XLT off road package. Odo 176k. Rebuilt title. Story I'm told is that it was sold in PA, had front end collision, was salvaged, rebuilt, and bought by a towing company in Ohio as a parts truck. The seller bought said truck after it broke down due to a timing chain issue where it skipped and bent all the intake valves. According to him, he believes it was the second motor placed in the car due to how clean the intake valves were. Anyways, he replaced with a cloyes timing chain, replaced all the valves, head gaskets, water pump, turbo coolant tubes and fittings, new front and rear brake rotors and pads. See pictures. I saw the truck in person and as far as I can tell (although take with grain of salt) the body looks relatively fine. You can tell that the body had some degree of crumpling in the front though the truck doesn't look at all deformed on the outside. The guy seemed nice enough on the phone. Claims to be a "master mechanic" with 40+ years of experience who now flips cars out of his garage. No way to verify this obviously.

You might be wondering why I am considering this cheap truck. Well one, I am in my medical residency right now so although the big money is coming in a couple years when I finish, right now saving money is the name of the game (not all doctors are rich folks ;) . I do not drive many miles at all so high mileage vehicles don't scare me if I know I can get a few years out of them. I've wanted a pickup for years and I love green (it's shallow I guess but it's the truth.) BUT, if buying a rebuilt title truck with high mileage is a dumb decision I want to know from the experts! Who knows? Maybe it actually looks good to you all. If I move forward I have already agreed to take to an independant mechanic to have evaluated. Thank you so much!

Here is the ad:

"Excellent work truck. 3.5l Ecoboost with new cloyes timing chain and Phasers all new intake valves and head gaskets, new water pump, new turbo coolant tubes and fittings, new front and rear brake rotors and pads. no dash lights, passed E check. Runs and drives smooth at 80-85 stops nice amd smooth, some bumps and scratches as seen in pics but one hell of a work horse. 8500.00. call we'll talk... cash talks. title in hand. Don't let the milage throw you this I believe was the 2nd engine put in this truck. intake and exhaust valves were clean as a whistle which is highly uncommon on high mileage motors of this type. sadly the owner neglected some thing and timing chain skipped bending every intake valve. the new Cloyes set-up is the best you can get. Get your act together Ford!....cheap Ford chain is he weak spot on these motors, they stretch, not anymore..... if you can't call you can't buy....no texts period. Master Mechanic for 40 years.....yes it's done right...... if you don't have full cash try your local (not big bank) bet they will loan on it if you put 1/2 down."

2023.03.30 19:52 LIS1050010 Smart Ways to Conserve Water During Drought (or Anytime)

Water is life.
All good disaster planning includes water storage for a temporary disruption, but what if a prolonged drought forces you to take extreme measures? What are ways to conserve water over weeks, months, or even years?

Lessons From Cape Town, South Africa

In 2017, in Cape Town, South Africa, residents were required to restrict their water use to 50 litres (13 gallons) per person per day during a severe drought.
That included:
In contrast, most Americans use between 70-100 gallons of water daily!
Residents of Cape Town and other drought survivors devised clever ways to conserve water in extreme drought that we can learn from as many parts of our country dry out. We’ll cover those later in detail.
But first

We Are Currently Headed Towards Our Own Water Disaster

If you follow the news, you probably heard that Lake Powell’s water level is so low that its hydroelectric plant is in danger of shutting down.
This is unprecedented.
Lake Powell has sunk to 28% of capacity.
Its sister reservoir, Lake Mead, is down to 26% of capacity.
This may be uninteresting to you unless you are one of the 40 million people that receive their water from these reservoirs. That’s 13% of the US population.
If you are one of these unlucky ones, expect unprecedented water restrictions in the coming months and years. Unfortunately, other areas may not be far behind.

Drought Conditions are Widespread

Drought conditions are not restricted to California and Arizona.
40% of the United States, including all western states from Montana down to Texas, is currently experiencing some form of drought. 25% of that is categorized as Extreme or Exceptional Drought. (See Drought.gov).
Perhaps even more disturbing is the impact of drought on the farms and ranches in the west. California grows over a third of our country’s vegetables and two-thirds of its fruits and nuts. Drought conditions that impair the ability of California farmers to grow the crops needed will only add to our country’s food source instability.
Ultimately, drought conditions will impact all of us directly or indirectly.
So what can we as individuals do to conserve this precious resource?
These water conservation tips range from “no brainers” to radical, worst-case-scenario. You may not be prepared to use all of them now, but establishing good practices prepares you in case your water supply diminishes.

Easy Ways to Save Water and Money

We are meant to be good stewards of our planet and resources.
Water doesn’t need to be scarce in your area for you to use it wisely.
The following ideas are “low-hanging fruit” that still result in significant water savings. Moreover, these are so simple as to rise to the level of common sense.
Pick one or three and start including them in your daily routine.

Ways to Conserve Water During a Drought

If your region is consistently dry (as mine is) or if conditions cause water levels to be lower than normal, you may need to take more drastic water-saving measures.
Some of these require changes in habits, and some require spending money. However, all of them result in real water savings, especially collectively.

Radical Ways to Conserve Water During Extreme Drought

There may come a time when nearly everything you do is focused around conserving precious water. The following ideas came from the personal experiences of a Cape Town resident and the personal account of long-time prepper, Jim Acosta, during a 2014 drought in California.

Real-life Examples from Cape Town, South Africa

One Survival Mom reader, Andre, who hails from Cape Town, had this to say in 2018 when Cape Town was experiencing one of the most extreme modern-day droughts in history:
“We need at LEAST 450 million liters of water per day at the lowest possible usage. We are currently at about 540 million liters per day. What people are missing, this coming season is there must be enough rain to not only supply the current need, but enough to fill the dams to cover the 2018/2019 summer period, too. What are the chances of that after three years of the worst possible drought, due to a high-pressure system not budging on the West Coast of Africa, keeping our rains away? Cape Town and its surrounds are a huge contributor to the South African economy so if the rains stay away and we do run out of water, it can trigger an event to bring the entire country down if we cannot sort desalination in bulk, and that takes 2-3 years to put into place.”

Two Ways to Think About Water Conservation During Drought

Ultimately, Cape Town residents banded together and, in the millions, worked toward conserving every drop possible.
Here’s how they did it, according to Andre:
“There are two ways to think about conserving water in a drought:
  1. WANTS – Throw lots of money at the problem like water tanks for your house, expensive filters, and all that.
  2. NEEDS – Be very wise financially, buy things secondhand to save money, and think about each liter of water used.

The Biggest Problem During Extreme Drought May Not Be What You Think

The core problem I identified is not drinking water. That’s easy to buy in bulk and store.
The problem is sewage water. If you don’t flush that toilet, you will face some serious problems, not to mention smells.
So, here is what we did:
Before you open any tap, think! Then open the tap very small and close it ASAP. Catch that water for toilet use. Every drop adds up during the day.

Use Showers Strategically to Flush the Toilet

Invest in wet wipes and dry shampoo to be able to skip showers. Catch all the shower water in a bucket used for flushing the toilet only.
But, here’s the thing with showering.
You have to use the toilet, right? You can shower as quickly as you can, 90 seconds as advised, BUT if you run out of toilet water, you defeat saving shower water.
So use just enough shower water so that you can flush your toilet for the days you don’t shower.

Help the Dishwasher Save Water

Ensure your dishwasher uses less than 5 liters (1.32 gallons) per wash for dishwashing.
Strategies like water-efficient loading, eco-settings, and more can help your dishwasher save water.

The Washing Machine: The Biggest User

In the end, after all the above was done, the washing machine was left being the biggest user.
A full load in the washing machine uses about 150-200 liters (39-52 gallons.) Now, you can spend a lot of money and buy one that uses less water, or always use a full load using the soaking cycle so that the clothes can soak properly, or you can wear clothes longer in-between washes.
So, we first caught the rinse water and then re-used it for the next load’s washing water. Then we stopped the rinsing cycle by simply changing the detergent we used. We now could wash more frequently.
We were able to catch a few liters of rain one day, so we started using rainwater for washing clothes. Using that rainwater, we did not use any drinking water for three washes with all that greywater used for toilets.
That was the best day ever!
We add HTH (pool chlorine) to the grey water stored in drums to ensure no smell. It works quite well.
Now, you can add pumps and pipes to transport water from one place to another, or you can get some exercise and fetch the water with a bucket for the toilets. We chose the exercise option.

The Results of Andre’s Family’s Efforts to Conserve Water

Before this drought all started, we used 25 kiloliters (6,604 gallons) per month for six people in our household. When we had to limit our usage to 50 liters (13 gallons) per person per day, through all these efforts, we dropped to a total of 5000 liters (1,320 gallons) per month for our entire six-person household. Four of us work from home.
Ultimately, the residents of Cape Town lowered their city’s water usage to about 510 million liters per day, down from 1.2 billion liters just three years earlier. As Andre said, “Low-cost changes with a massive impact on our usage.”

Conclusion

Water is a precious resource.
And whether you’re experiencing drought conditions or not, there are lifestyle changes you can make right now to be a better steward of our water supply.
A side benefit for us all, especially preppers, is that the water-saving measures necessary during disasters will be second nature to you.

2023.03.30 19:51 Agile-Yellow9925 Lock-out Hydraulics on Excavator Type Equipment

Hello everyone,
Our company operates a fleet of amphibious excavators - essentially 45 foot long barges with a back-hoe boom on the bow.
Our crews are required to frequently change the implements on the hydraulic boom.
Because of the size of the equipment the crew members changing the implements (ie. pulling and replacing pins) are quite far from the operator - although they are in sight of the operator at all times.
I am relatively new to this company. The current procedure for changing the implements does not include a lock out of the hydraulics. The operator simply lifts both hands to show the crew on the ground that his hands are not on the controls, and it is safe to approach the boom. Obviously this is far from ideal.
The machines are quite old and do not have the lockout switches of modern excavators. They do have a valve shut off when you raise the arm rest to get into the operator's seat ... but this only locks out the joystick on one side. Also, the arm rest is not "locked" in the raised position, so if it falls and the joystick is hit, the boom will move.
Does anyone have any experience retrofitting excavators or backhoes with a switch that will lock out the hydraulics?
Ideally, we would have a toggle switch with a bump cover. If the bump cover was lifted an audible alarm would sound to alert the ground crew that the hydraulics would be live. And the toggle that turned off the hydraulics would also operate lights on the machine that would indicate if it was safe to approach the boom.
Any thoughts?
