2023.04.02 11:51 AllesMeins Weight Painting: Why is my mesh deforming unevenly
I'm currently trying to learn Blender so I'm more interested in an explanation than in a solution how to fix this (but of cause I also would take the latter). I've been playing around with weight painting and deformation and noticed this strange and ugly behavior. Some faces deform very strong while others don't seem to change at all. Why is this? The weight paint in the area looks mostly even to me.

2023.04.01 17:21 midnight-carnival [LFM] [FC] [Tonberry] Midnight Carnival is recruiting!
Midnight Carnival (MICA) is an SG/SEA FC in Tonberry, and we are currently recruiting active players, casuals, and experienced raiders alike, to join us. Most of us have been playing together since 2.0 and have lots of experience on raids in FF and other games.
We have a large house in Limsa, and we often organize practice and aim to clear runs for new members to learn and catch up on current content in a safe environment. The FC has over 500 members, and there can be as many as 100+ members online during peak hours.
If you are looking for a small, cozy, family-based FC, we might not be the FC for you. But we have tons of friendly members and officers who are willing to help you with content and questions you may have about the game. Apart from FFXIV, we also play a myriad of games as well.
Please drop your FC applications directly, or add me at RirinaRina#7268 in Discord. If possible, please indicate:
Your IGN: Online timings: (so we can arrange a time/day to add you) Brief description of yourself: (we'd like to know you a little better!)
Please note that if either parties (e.g., the Officers) are in an instance/duty/dungeon, we won't be able to reach you. Hence, adding us via Discord is a much more reliable way of keeping the conversation going.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask away! :>

2023.04.01 17:02 happy_book_bee OFFICIAL r/Fantasy 2023 Book Bingo Challenge!
Welcome to the Jungle, I mean, the Bingo! Join us in the reading party that is the
Fantasy Bingo. What is this Bingo nonsense people keep talking about?
Fantasy Book Bingo is a yearly reading challenge within our community. Its one-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new authors and books, to boldly go where few readers have gone before . . . (okay, a lot of us have gone here by now, just roll with it!)
The core of this challenge is encouraging readers to step out of their comfort zones, discover amazing new reads, and motivate everyone to keep up on their reading throughout the year. You can find all our past challenges at our
official Bingo wiki page for the sub.
RULES:
Time Period and Prize - 2023 Bingo Period lasts from April 1st 2023 - March 31st 2024.
- You will be able to turn in your 2023 card in the Official Turn In Post, which will be posted in mid-March 2024. Only submissions through the Google Forms link in the official post will count.
- 'Reading Champion' flair will be assigned to anyone who completes the entire card by the end of the challenge. If you already have this flair, you will receive a roman numeral after 'Reading Champion' indicating the number of times you completed Bingo.
Repeats and Rereads - You can’t use the same book more than once on the card. One square = one book.
- You may not repeat an author on the card EXCEPT: you may reuse an author from the short stories square (as long as you're not using a short story collection from just one author for that square).
- Only ONE square can be a re-read--all other books must be first-time reads. The point of Bingo is to explore new grounds, so get out there and explore books you haven't read before.
Substitutions - You may substitute ONE square from the 2023 card with a square from a previous Fantasy bingo card if you wish to. EXCEPTIONS: You may NOT use the Free Space and you may NOT use a square that duplicates another square on this card (ex: you cannot have two 'Goodreads Book of the Month' squares). Previous squares can be found via the Bingo wiki page.
Upping the Difficulty - HARD MODE: For an added challenge, you can choose to do 'Hard Mode' which is the square with something added just to make it a little more difficult. You can do one, some, none, or all squares on 'Hard Mode' -- whatever you want, it's up to you! There are no additional prizes for completing Hard Modes, it's purely a self-driven challenge for those who want to do it.
- HERO MODE: Review EVERY book that you read for bingo. You don't have to review it here on Fantasy. It can be on Goodreads, Amazon, your personal blog, some other review site, wherever! Leave a review, not just ratings, even if it's just a few lines of thoughts, that counts. As with Hard Mode there is no special prize for hero mode, just the satisfaction of a job well done.
This is not a hard rule, but I would encourage everyone to post about what you're reading, progress, etc., in at least one of the official
Fantasy monthly book discussion threads that happen on the 30th of each month (except February where it happens on the 28th). Let us know what you think of the books you're reading! The monthly threads are also a goldmine for finding new reading material.
Now, The Squares:
First Row Across: 1)
Title with a Title: Read a book in which the novel title contains a job title, military title, or title of nobility such as locksmith, lieutenant, or lord. This title can be something that is bestowed upon a character (such as "hero") and it can include fictional titles that are only in the setting, such as
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
. HARD MODE: Not a title of royalty.
2)
Superheroes: Story focuses on super powered individuals. You know, heroes and villains and capes.
HARD MODE: Not related to DC or Marvel.
3)
Bottom of the TBR: Read one of the books that’s been on your To Be Read pile (TBR) the longest. If you do not keep a TBR, read one of the books that you have been meaning to read for the longest time but haven’t yet.
HARD MODE: None. Actually finishing a book you’ve been putting off for so long is already hard enough.
4)
Magical Realism or Literary Fantasy: Read a book that portrays magical or unreal elements in an otherwise realistic or mundane environment. These books are often found on literary fiction shelves and book lists and not always shelved as genre fiction. This is a hard square to pin down as what makes something literary or magical can often come down to vibes, so use your best judgment. No saying
A Game of Thrones is literary fiction since there aren’t a lot of magical elements. Check out
this thread for further ideas and guidelines. HARD MODE: Not one of the thirty books in the linked thread.
5)
Young Adult: Read a book that was written for young adults.
HARD MODE: Published in the last 5 years.
Second Row Across: 6)
Mundane Jobs: The protagonist has a commonplace job that can be found in the real world (so no princes or monster hunters!). We are also excluding soldiers as they are already extremely prominent in SFF.
HARD MODE: Does not take place on Earth.
7)
Published in the 00s: Read a book that was published between 2000 and 2009.
HARD MODE: Not in the top 30 of
Fantasy’s
Best of 2023 List.
8)
Angels and Demons: Story must feature angels or demons or both in a prominent role.
HARD MODE: The protagonist is an angel or demon.
9)
Five SFF Short Stories: Any short SFF story as long as there are five of them.
HARD MODE: Read an entire SFF anthology or collection.
10)
Horror: Read a book from the horror genre.
HARD MODE: Not Stephen King or H. P. Lovecraft.
Third Row Across: 11)
Self-Published OR Indie Publisher: Self-published or published through a small, indie publisher. If the novel has been picked up by a publisher, it only counts for this challenge if you read it when it was still self-published.
HARD MODE: Self-published and has fewer than 100 ratings on Goodreads, OR an indie publisher that has done an
AMA with Fantasy.
12)
Set in the Middle East/Middle Eastern SFF: Read a book that is set in the Middle East or in an analogous setting that is based on real-world Middle Eastern settings, myths, and culture. See these pages for more info on which countries and regions qualify:
Wikipedia page for the Middle East,
SWANA page. Example novels would include
The Daevabad Trilogy by S. A. Chakraborty and
The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad
HARD MODE: Author is of Middle Eastern heritage.
13)
Published in 2023: A book published for the first time in 2023 (no reprints or new editions). HARD MODE: It's also a debut novel--as in it's the author's first published novel.
14)
Multiverse and Alternate Realities: Read a book in which the setting contains at least two universes, dimensions, planes, realities, etc. that characters within the book can travel between. Multiple worlds in the same physical plane of existence - such as planets within a universe - would not count for this square.
HARD MODE: Characters do not walk through a literal door in order to get to another world.
15)
POC Author: Author must be Person of Color.
HARD MODE: Novel takes place in a futuristic, sci-fi world. NOTE: this is now a recurring, yearly square but the hard mode will be changing every year to keep it exciting.
Fourth Row Across: 16)
Book Club OR Readalong Book: Any past or active
Fantasy book clubs count as well as past or active
Fantasy readalongs. See our
full list of book clubs here. NOTE: All of the current book club info can also be found on
our Goodreads page. Every book added to our
Goodreads shelf or on
this Google Sheet counts for this square. You can see our
past readalongs here.
HARD MODE: Must read a current selection of either a book club or readalong and participate in the discussion.
17)
Novella: Read a work of fiction of between 17,500 and 40,000 words.
HARD MODE: Novella is
NOT published by Tordotcom Publishing.
18)
Mythical Beasts: Read a book that prominently features at least one mythical beast, meaning a creature that doesn't exist in reality. See
this Wikipedia page for an idea of what counts.
HARD MODE: No dragons or dragon-like creatures (e.g. wyverns, Draccus in Kingkiller).
19)
Elemental Magic: Read a book that has elemental magic. The primary magic within the world deals with the classical elements: Earth, Wind/Air, Water, and Fire.
HARD MODE: Not V. E. Schwab’s
Shades of Magic series or Jim Butcher’s
Codex Alera series.
20)
Myths and Retellings: Read a book that is based on a myth or preexisting story.
HARD MODE: Not Greek or Roman mythology.
Fifth Row Across: 21)
Queernorm Setting: A book set in a world where queerness is normalized, accepted, and prevalent within communities. Characters are not othered, ostracized, or particularly remarkable in any way for their queerness.
HARD MODE: Not a futuristic setting. Takes place in a time akin to ours, in the past, or in a fantasy world that has no science fiction elements.
22)
Coastal or Island Setting: Story features a major setting that is near or surrounded by the sea.
HARD MODE: The book also features sea-faring.
23)
Druids: A book that heavily features druids. This can be a classic druid, a priest or magician in Celtic lore, or a magic user whose powers stem from nature.
HARD MODE: Not
The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne.
24)
Featuring Robots: Read a book that features robots, androids, clockwork machines, or automatons.
HARD MODE: Robot is the protagonist.
25)
Sequel: Read a book that is a sequel to another SFF book.
HARD MODE: Book 3 or on in the series.
FAQs:
What Counts? - Can I read non- speculative fiction books for this challenge? Not unless the square says so specifically. As a speculative fiction sub, we expect all books to be spec fic (fantasy, sci fi, horror, etc.). If you aren't sure what counts, see the next FAQ bullet point.
- Does ‘x’ book count for ‘y’ square? Bingo is mostly to challenge yourself and your own reading habit. If you are wondering if something counts or not for a square, ask yourself if you feel confident it should count. You don't need to overthink it. If you aren't confident, you can ask around. If no one else is confident, it's much easier to look for recommendations people are confident will count instead. If you still have questions, free to ask here or in our Daily Simple Questions threads. Either way, we'll get you your answers.
- If a self-published book is picked up by a publisher, does it still count as self-published? Sadly, no. If you read it while it was still solely self-published, then it counts. But once a publisher releases it, it no longer counts.
- Are we allowed to read books in other languages for the squares? Absolutely!
Does it have to be a novel specifically? - You can read or listen to any narrative fiction for a square so long as it is of novel length. This includes short story collections/anthologies, web novels, graphic novels, manga, webtoons, fan fiction, audiobooks, audio dramas, and more.
- You can read a few novellas for Bingo but don't overdo it. Remember: Bingo is supposed to be a challenge and reading only books that you can finish in one sitting is not much of a challenge.
- If your chosen medium is not roughly novel length, you can also read/listen to multiple entries of the same type to count it as novel length. For example: 3 Murderbot novellas would be roughly the length of a full novel and about 5-6 hours of audio is equivalent to a short book read aloud. Ideally said entries would all be from the same series but they don't have to be.
Timeline - Do I have to start the book from 1st of April 2023 or only finish it from then? If the book you've started is less than 50% complete when April 1st hits, you can count it if you finish it after the 1st.
Help! I still have questions! Resources:
If anyone makes any resources be sure to ping me in the thread and let me know so I can add them here, thanks!
A huge thank you to:
- the community here for continuing to support this challenge. We couldn't do this without you!
- the users who take extra time to make resources for the challenge (including Bingo cards, tracking spreadsheets, etc), answered Bingo-related questions, made book recommendations, and made suggestions for Bingo squares--you guys rock!!
- the folks that run the various Fantasy book clubs and readalongs, you're awesome!
- the other mods who help me behind the scenes, especially u/eriophora for making the awesome card graphic!
Last but not least, thanks to everyone participating! Have fun and good luck!

2023.04.01 15:42 GloriousStonerHoes Building A Basic Wardrobe v7.0
Introduction
If you have no idea how to dress and want a simple basic wardrobe guide / shopping list to get started, this post is for you.
Alternatively, for those of you who want to start traversing beyond the basics, I've included some baby steps that are perfectly safe to incorporate in almost any beginner's wardrobe, but offer a little bit more interest and creativity than the most basic of the basic.
Disclaimer: This guide is targeted toward more traditional clothing styles (essentially, a safe blend of workwear, Americana, and prep). It is not the only way to dress well! If these clothes simply don't appeal to you at all, that's totally okay. Consider looking into other styles, and reading stuff from a variety of fashion communities - for example, see if things appeal more to you in streetwear, malefashion, navyblazer, etc.
The Basic Wardrobe - visual guide HERE
Tops
- Plain crew-neck t-shirts in neutral colors - white and gray are most versatile, but other neutrals such as navy or beige, or simple patterns (e.g., stripes) can be nice.
- Button-front shirts - oxford-cloth button-downs (OCBDs) in white and light blue, flannel/chamois shirts in plaids or solid neutrals
- Baby steps: Try out graphic tees, OCBDs with university stripe patterns, chambray shirts, or a polo shirt (short sleeve or long sleeve). For cool weather, heavyweight shirts in twill, flannel, chamois, denim, or moleskin can keep you a bit warmer, while in warm weather, linen or seersucker shirts can keep you cool.
- Avoid: Graphic tees with meme references, jokes, etc. These are inherently unfashionable.
Bottoms
- Straight fit jeans in dark indigo, black, and/or medium wash
- Straight fit chinos in tan (khaki), caramel, and/or olive
- If you want to wear shorts, 7-9" chino shorts in khaki, olive, or navy
- Baby steps: Try corduroy pants, cargo pants, linen pants, fatigues, or double knee pants. If you're interested in tucking in a shirt and wearing a layer on top, try looking for pants with higher rises (~11"+). If you're in a "sky's out, thighs out" mood, try getting a pair or two of short shorts with a ~5" inseam.
- Avoid: Chinos with a synthetic flatness and luster. Avoid black chinos, which can look a little formal.
Mid-layers
Outerwear (as needed for your specific climate)
- Light jackets such as a trucker jackets in indigo/black denim or tan/olive cotton, chore coats in olive/brown, or field jackets in olive/brown/gray.
- Raincoat in olive, gray, or black, although vibrant colors can work too.
- Warm jacket such as an overcoat or parka in dark neutrals (gray/brown for overcoats, olive/gray/black for parkas).
- Baby steps: There is a whole wide world of jackets out there, both light and heavy, so look into several different varieties to figure out what you like.
- Avoid: Trying to skimp out on jackets if you live in a cold/rainy climate. Being too cold or getting soaked is miserable!
Shoes
Casual tailoring (optional, if needed for a job/event or if you like to wear it)
Semi-formal tailoring (optional, if needed for a job/event or if you like to wear it)

This is a truncated and modified version of the MFA Best of Picks for the items recommended in this guide at various price points. These are not the only options, and if you want more suggestions, I highly recommend asking for recommendations in Daily Questions (don't forget to include a budget!)

2023.04.01 07:48 TrashbagTatertots Bunnyhead Industries (A Story About A Kid And Her Barbies)
When I was a kid, I had a real beef with femininity and the expectations of girlhood, and by the time I finished high school, I had pretty much abdicated gender altogether and began to aim for genuine androgyny. Now that I’m an adult and I live in an era where your gender is whatever you say it is, I say I don't have one. I want to be the Tilda Swinton angel from Constantine when I grow up and/or die.
From this feeling stemmed antipathy for things that were too feminine, except I hadn’t acquired the word “feminine” yet, so this manifested as a particular loathing for Barbie dolls. I had come to associate Barbie things with the kind of girls who bullied me for not being feminine enough and the signal color that ensured the boys would reject me outright. Boys sucked back then because girls can’t be Ninja Turtles, and even if you owned a pink bathrobe and your mom taught you a judo throw, you had to be April if you were a girl, no exceptions, girls can’t be Splinter either. (God forbid you had two girls in your friend group, because the other one has to be Irma. No one fucking likes Irma.)
On top of that, my mother was a single mom for most of my early life, so I was in front of the TV for 16 hours a day between the ages of 2 and 12, and this was the mid-late 80’s, so every seven minutes I was seeing this hot-pink vinyl-wrapped bimbo telling me to want this or that ridiculous pink thing and my fully-agender brain, even as a toddler, knew that that was some ol’ bullshit right there. Most people don’t know this, but Ken was Patient Zero for the cooties outbreak after the Soda Shoppe incident of 1988. Barbie’s brand carries the stigma to this day, that’s why most elementary schools are still riddled with them even now. Get your cootie shots, kids.
So I hated poor, innocent Barbie’s unrelatable perfect womanity… until I met Skipper, Stacie...
...and Courtney.
See, Stacie and Skipper are Barbie’s little sisters and Courtney is Stacie’s friend. That was her name, Courtney, parentheses, Stacie’s friend, who was discontinued about a year later. I haven’t kept up on it since around 1992, but the fact that I haven’t and still remember should give you an idea of how heavily cemented this concept is in my mind.
This fully blew my tiny child mind, because I knew that the existence of Skipper, Stacie, and Courtney (Stacie's Friend) implied a wider universe outside the lives of Barbie and Ken, and that Courtney existed, and then did not exist, in that universe. I had to know why, and lacking explanation and absolutely zero people giving a shit what a five year old questions about the Barbie expanded universe that wouldn’t exist for another thirty years (special thanks to Mattel and the Internet for helping me understand The Last Unicorn in a way that destroyed what little spark of childhood innocence I’d managed to hold onto at that point, great work) I had no answers, because there were none to be had.
I had to imagine my own.
I eventually decided that every commercial for a different Barbie playset was actually depicting a phase in Barbie’s life, and that’s why she keeps changing jobs all the time: she’s running from justice after what she did to Courtney. And because I knew that trademarks and copyrights were a thing, I decided to call my new line of alternative Barbie dolls ‘Bunnyhead Industries’, because, y’know, I didn’t want anyone to think those hacks at Mattel came up with anything that fucking rad, and I started drawing what I didn’t know were concept drawings for playsets in this, my idea of the Barbie Expanded Universe, which turned out to be super dark because I fucking hated Barbie so much.
This isn’t something a normal six year old does, if your kid does this, take them to see a child psychiatrist immediately and have them evaluated, and also maybe ask them if they’ve ever hurt an animal just in case, but when I was six, I came up with Death Penalty Barbie, and my mother kept the drawing until it crumbled. Death Penalty Barbie could be executed in a working toy electric chair and had hair that would get fried black but turn blond again in warm water, and you could fill her head with a special blood juice that would run out of her eyes. It came with Father Ken, who ran the Miami Beach Jail Church because I didn’t have the words “penitentiary chapel” yet, and if you pull his string he gives Barbie her last rights. Not for any specific crime, because I wanted other girls to be able to decide for themselves what sins rested heavy on the soul of Barbara Millicent Roberts of Malibu Beach, CA Prisoner #8675309.
That’s when I met Shannon. See, Shannon was my friend Joey’s older sister, she was cool because she was fourteen, and I was a latchkey kid and an only child, so the approval of an older girl was full-on crack to me. She was smart and good at stuff and smoked cigarettes like a badass, and I felt comfortable talking to her about how much I fucking hated Barbie dolls, so I showed her these drawings I would do. These were not simple drawings, either, these things had a kindergartener’s idea of single-point perspective, there was shading, I ruined two pink Highlighters and a crayon to get the right shade of obnoxious Barbie pink because as a child I had no psychosexual development so I hate-fucked color. I put hours of recess into this and all I wanted was to see the cool older girl laugh, because fuck this bitch am I right?
I showed Shannon, and she didn’t react, she just said, “Hey, do you have finger paints at home?”
I said, “Yeah, I’m an artist, of course I got fingerpaint, what do you take me for?” and I was disappointed because I’d worked so hard to keep the pink bright enough to recognize, but not so bright that you couldn’t see the blood through it. Now all of a sudden she was criticizing me because I didn’t use fingerpaints?
Shannon didn’t miss a beat. “Hey, go home, get a Barbie and the red finger paint, and come back here.” And I didn’t question it so I did, I came back with the stuff, and when I got back she had gathered up a couple of the girls in our neighborhood and made sure they each had a doll, and Shannon said “Come on, we’re gonna go play in the woods.”
And then I’m thinking oh shit, Shannon plays Barbies, and my whole world is shattered because I just spent two weeks perfecting the hieroglyphics of my hate for her favorite thing. But we all got our Barbies, and Shannon had already got this little clearing set up at the top of this hill, just inside the treeline in the woods, and she’s got one Barbie, and one Ken, already sitting out there in the dirt.
She gets us all in a circle around this circle of stones, and says “Okay, THIS is how you play with Barbies. Take off their clothes.”
And then it’s me, Taylor, Amy, and Tracy, and we’re all between the ages of 6 and 8, and we stripped our Barbies down, and since I didn’t really play with Barbies all that much, I thought that was weird, but I went with it. I mean, come on, G.I. Joe would’ve had to check her for cigarettes at some point, right, so whatever. All the Barbies got naked, and Shannon goes and gets a pile of leaves and sticks, and she showed us how to make doll clothes from natural materials in the woods. Granted, this is through the magical filter of childhood imagination, but by the time we were done these dolls were pagan angels, Maenads of the Connecticut River Valley, with twigs braided into their hair so that they looked like antlers, which is an aesthetic that I am stoked is making a comeback in the witch and gothic communities.
I don’t know how many of you guys remember this, but Barbie dolls didn’t used to have working joints, the closest you got to working knees was that you could crack them back and forth to kind of simulate the movement of a shin; we were impressed with that because that was what we had instead of the internet. Shannon took all these leaf-clad Barbies and started cracking all the legs every possible direction other than the intended one, and the four of us younger girls started freaking out because oh my god, they’re all tragedies now! Except me, I was freaking out because holy shit Shannon just inspired the Death Row Barbie Prison Riot Playset, she’s on board after all!
So now that there are three little girls crying and one little girl trying to break Barbie’s knees more, Shannon took her Barbie. This one was clearly the leader, she was wearing an entire evening gown of leaves and had a stick with a hair bead stuck to it wedged in her hand for a staff. She took this deep breath like she was gonna say something of monumental importance, and we all got quiet.
Shannon says in this amazing, commanding voice:
“Sisters of the Moon Tribe: the men have stolen our knees.”
And just like that we are FULLY into it, we have our Barbies writhing in agony with their stiffened, broken legs, and holy shit there are cheetahs that don’t turn on prey that fast. The four of us are wailing for their absent knees, demanding justice from the Men (who were the Men? She never said, it didn’t matter; not the idea of men, or the sum of all men, just some Men, who I suppose must have once been the boys who said girls can’t be Ninja Turtles). Amy and Tracy, identical twins, are rolling on the ground, swinging their tortured foliage-clad fashion dolls like maces. Taylor actually takes a careful and thoughtful pause to adjust her doll’s dress for modesty before returning her to the dirt to flail. I think I was laughing too hard to agonize properly.
Shannon goes on, “In order to restore our knees, we must appease the Moon Goddess!” And then she brought out Ken.
He is also naked, with leaf stems wrapped around him so that when she puts him on the rock in the middle of the play area, he’s bound to this terrifying heathen altar, and Shannon looks at me with this moment of recognition, like she’s first and only person to ever truly see me, and says,
“Hey, didja get that paint?”
I said “Yeah.”
She jams the hair-bead staff into Ken’s chest and bellows, “We sacrifice Ken to THE BUNNY HEAD GOD.”
And that was my first introduction to tabletop storytelling, and the last time I felt bad for not being a boy.

2023.04.01 06:36 Dryadversity The third color of gloam, and how flower colors hint that Melina is St. Trina (colors of gloam pt. 2)
I'm going to be covering these topics out of order, with respect to their sequence in the title. Also, apologies in advance for retreading some of the ground from my previous submissions.
Spoilers for the Frenzied Flame and Age of the Duskborn endings. How flower colors support the theory that Melina is St. Trina This is something I later added to my recent theory on gloam, but I also thought it was interesting enough to warrant its own post. In that submission, I posited that gloam is actually two colors, primarily: purple—or indigo, as I suggested and tried to explain in an appendment at the bottom—and faded or tarnished gold.
Something I noticed about these colors that they are prominently associated with, and almost equivalent to, the color schemes of Miquella and St. Trina: Miquella is associated with gold, and St. Trina with purple. Now, Miquella is actually primarily represented by unalloyed gold, which realistically does not fade or tarnish. However, Miquella's lilies are indeed described as faded, just like the dusky erdleaf flowers mentioned in that post.
The first line of the description for Miquella's lily reads:
"A delicate water lily of unalloyed gold that has started to fade and wilt." These lilies, I believe, are important visual hints as to the identity of Melina and St. Trina.
Miquella's lily (faded gold) and St. Trina's lily (purple) Melina's faded gold eye, and purple-indigo eye Note that Miquella's and Trina's lily are found
directly adjacent to each other in the crafting materials menu, matching the positioning of Melina's eyes. However, I did change the order of the lilies in the picture shown; in the menu, Trina's lily is found on the left, and Miquella's on the right. That being said, there might be a way to resolve this minor discrepancy: Even though the flowers and eyes appear to be ordered differently, this is only true if we base our judgment on our own perspective; Melina's gloam eye is on
our right, but it's really
her left eye, which corresponds with Trina's lily being on the left. The same is true for Miquella's lily and Melina's golden eye.
It's also interesting to look at Miquella's lily alongside the golden sunflower, which by the way, are also placed right next to each other in the menu, in the same order shown below.
golden sunflower and St. Trina's lily The sunflower resembles Melina's gold eye, as well as an eclipse. Plus, if you ask me, the spiraling petals of Trina's lily on the right have a slight resemblance to the crow's talons on Melina's indigo eye.
Another important piece of evidence is the description for the golden sunflower. It reads:
"At the foot of the Erdtree, they retain their color, along with a powerful holy essence." This is the same phrasing we hear from Melina when describing her origins: "
The Erdtree...is close. Only a little further till the foot of the Erdtree, and the accord is fulfilled. It takes me back. I was born at the foot of the Erdtree. Where mother gave me my purpose." You may recall that Melina also maintains certain attributes at the foot of the Erdtree: namely, her ability to "govern her own movement", and also, it seems, her memory (since memories are gold, and the Erdtree is made of them).
Below you can see how gold and purple flowers are clustered together in the item menu. I checked that this is the proper order, and that there are no missing crafting materials between the flowers in this row.
a full row of purple and golden flowers Yet another pairing that makes sense is tha of the grave violet and tarnished golden sunflower. As I've said, Melina's golden eye is faded, or tarnished. (In case it's not clear why I consider faded and tarnished gold to be close enough, here's one reason: Godfrey's eyes, which are golden, faded at the moment he became Tarnished.) The grave violet of course relates to death, which Melina threatens us with after her sealed eye opens. Additionally, Melina has links to ghostflame through the crow's foot on her eye, since crows and deathbirds are shown to be connected in the description for the Ravenmount clothing set. Finally, Melina is also linked to spirit calling, since it appears she is Torrent's former master, and we know it was from this person that Ranni received the spirit calling bell.
I should also mention, as I already have in my dedicated post on Melina and St. Trina connections, that there is a second pair of colors important to Miquella and Melina, in addition to gold and purple. These colors are black and white. In this case however, the pairing is a complementary contrast, and shows how the two characters differ from each other.
Melina is strongly linked with the color black; she wears a black robe, and her hair turns black in the Frenzied Flame ending. There's also the fact that her indigo eye resembles a black hole, which I discussed a while back in my theories on gravity's connection to the Gloam-Eyed Queen. Miquella, by contrast, is color-coded white. His infant form is mostly white (along with gold), and his cocoon is white, as are his robes in the DLC image.
I would summarize the color schemes of Melina and Miquella like this:
Miquella is purple and gold + white, and Melina is purple and gold + black. I'd like to mention one other thing for this section, and that's the general floral connection between Melina and St. Trina, regardless of the flowers' colors. St. Trina's torch depicts a flower above her head, and Melina uses a skill called Miranda's Prayer, which references the miranda flowers in name and in the style of the attack. Furthermore, there is a relief in Elphael that I believe depicts St. Trina rising out of miranda flower. (I discuss this relief extensively in my recent post on Elphael.) So even if the flowers weren't the same colors, I still think the shared association with flowers hints at Melina being St. Trina.
The third color of gloam The user The_Deep_Dark_Abyss pointed out to me in the comment section of my aforementioned gloam post that the Age of the Duskborn ending depicts the Lands Between without a sun. They interpreted this as stemming from the eclipse, which is integral to Godwyn's story, and has a non-trivial resemblance to the mending rune of the Death Prince (particularly the drained eclipse depiction). Their idea was that the Age of the Duskborn has a darkened sky because of the eclipse.
I don't think they agreed with my linking of the Duskborn ending to gloam; but to me the connections are well-evidenced, especially in light of their observations of the shading in this ending. To me, the word 'dusk' in Duskborn clearly suggests an association or equivalence with gloam, since 'gloam' and 'dusk' are regarded as synonymous by most dictionaries and thesauruses.
The conclusion I reached is that dusk might also be represented as grey. This is the color of the sky in the Duskborn ending. I think it would make sense for grey to be another form of gloam, because sunlight is often portrayed as white, and in opposition to the black of night. And black and white of course make grey.
The Erdtree and sky in the Age of the Duskborn ending There is a potential connection as well to the color-drained eclipse, which is white and black; even though I think the colored, tarnished-gold eclipse makes a bit more sense for an age in which Godwyn (the Golden) has some kind of authority. Maybe this is in fact the case? Is the Erdtree itself providing the gold, making the overall scene one of tarnished gold?
This makes quite a bit of sense. However, there's something that deserves special attention in this scene: the leaves. I remember learning from someone that the phrase "The fallen leaves tell a story" is actually saying that the inhabitants of the Lands Between can understand their history and the current order by examining the fallen leaves of the Erdtree, which change color along with the Erdtree itself. Something interesting is that the fallen leaves of the Erdtree seen in Leyndell before the game's ending are
already black and gold. This appears to remain the case in the Dung Eater's ending.
In the Duskborn ending, we can see both colors of leaves: golden leaves in the Erdtree (shown in the picture above), and black/grey leaves on the ground, seen below. However, the latter—i.e. the "fallen leaves" are exclusively black/grey.
Grey/black fallen leaves; I think grey is the better descriptor, since you can see what black looks like in Fia's deathbed dress on the right. If it's the
fallen leaves that tell a story, these might ultimately have more significance. The developers could have just left the fallen leaves black and gold, if they were trying to match the colors of the fallen leaves to the eclipse or tarnished gold. So, while there are valid counterarguments, I think there's still a case to be made that one color of gloam is grey, in addition to gold and purple.
(Actually, since I've been equating black/grey a few times... I had the [probably wrong] idea that the tarnished part of the gold could in some cases be grey, not black. If this were true, it would mean that one color of gloam, tarnished gold, would itself be composed of another color of gloam, grey. While I can't say I'm convinced of this myself, it would match even better with Melina's golden eye, which is more greyed than blackened.)
Now, I personally believe this third form of gloam being black + white has greater significance and ties into other notable color pairings in the game, which I'll do my best to explain now.
In the same comment section on post I mentioned, M00n_Slippers made the astounding observation that the color pairing of blue and red, which make purple (gloam), is perfectly mirrored by the combination of black and gold, which as I suggested in the post, also make gloam. This is because black and blue are suggested in some places in the game to be synonymous (e.g. the blue crest heater shield), in the same way that red and gold are described by the game as different manifestations of the same substance.
Trying to fill out the framework, I suggested that white might have a relationship to red that mirrors the relationship of black to blue, which I think is evidenced by the association of white and gold in Miquella's design, as well as in the red and white of the red crest heater shield. I speculated red and white might be linked through their associations with purity, since fire purifies; this is expressed in the incantation "Flame, Cleanse Me". In similar fashion, blood is used for cleansing in religious rituals. Finally, one could make comparisons between the Golden Order in Elden Ring and the Way of White in Dark Souls. (Some might object that the Golden Order opposes white because they persecute the Albinaurics, but I would say their issue is with silver, not white itself.)
So, in my view, there are three different manifestations of the color red, and three different manifestations of blue, which together create three different colors of gloam. In each of these dyads I'll list the red-associated color first, and then the blue-associated one. 1). The first pairing is red and blue which make purple or indigo; 2). the second is gold and black which make tarnished or faded gold, and 3.) the third is white and black (again), which mix to create grey. There is a bit of asymmetry here in that silver is not used once while black is used twice, but I still think this is the most complete framework so far.
St. Trina's three eyes If Melina is St. Trina, then we already know one of her eyes is indigo, and another is faded gold. But if there are 3 colors of gloam, and St. Trina has 3 eyes in her torch depiction, one could infer that the third eye of St. Trina is the only color not yet seen in Melina's eyes: grey.
A reasonable counterargument is the middle eye of St. Trina on the torch is likely purple, because this eye appears purple when illuminated by the torch's purple flames. This was a major hint of a connection between St. Trina and the Gloam-Eyed Queen, that I think most people, including myself, didn't notice. (Well, I did notice the commonalities of stone and purple, but not the purple eye more specifically.)
St. Trina's middle eye, self-illuminated with purple firelight Another thing we should take into account, is that the design of St. Trina on this torch is a mythological reference to Medusa, who turned her victims to stone (petrified them) by looking them in the eyes. In Elden Ring, purple is color-coded with the theme of fear; and since St. Trina only has one exposed eye on the torch, it would make more sense, functionally, if the middle eye was in fact purple; because she could use it (through purple's fearful attributes) to drive fear into her enemies.
So, I understand there's an argument to be made it's the middle eye that's supposed to be purple. On the other hand: it's been pointed out that the right eye on the torch (the figure's left eye) has a black marking under it, which highly resembles the crow's foot on Melina's eye. And we know that it's the crow's foot eye that's indigo. If this scarred eye is purple or indigo, and the other concealed eye is gold, then I think the third eye in the middle might be grey—which would make some intuitive sense, since the eye is in fact grey, due to the torch being made of stone.
St. Trina's torch depiction and middle eye, without the purple flames Since the only visible eye seen on the torch is grey, I think this lends some credence—with considerable counterevidence, I'm aware—that the third eye of St. Trina is grey, and the third color of gloam.
Postscript: Since this submission is something like a modification of my previous theory on gloam, I wanted to share another idea that I have also since appended to that post.
The idea I added was based on that same comment by The_Deep_Dark_Abyss, and a theory by miirshroom on a different post. The_Deep_Dark_Abyss mentioned there might be some link between the Japanese characters translated as gloam and the time between dusk and midnight, which reminded me that even the English word gloam is sometimes defined in this way. I related this to miishroom's theory, which is that gloam could be more like the spectrum of colors associated with dusk. My conclusion was that if gloam is technically or sometimes defined as between dusk and midnight, and gloam can have various levels of red and blue as miirshroom suggested, then it makes sense for Melina's eye to be more indigo than purple, because the Elden Ring clock represents night as blue, and dusk as purple. The time in between would be indigo.
I wrote more about this idea on that original post, if you'd like to read more about what I think this choice of color communicates. There you can also find some of the comments that influenced the developments in my perspective on this topic:
https://www.reddit.com/Eldenring/comments/124fbnf/gloam_is_definitely_purple_but_it_might_be/ -This is an updated post on all the reasons I think Melina is St. Trina. I've added a lot to this since first posting it (at least 6 points); I'm now up to 20 points of evidence. The post is titled "Some contributions to the Melina is St. Trina is Miquella (and potentially the GEQ) theory".
-The Elphael post containing analysis of the woman and flower relief is titled: "Elphael: Theories and observations on various topics, and more evidence that Melina is St. Trina".

I would summarize the color schemes of Melina and Miquella like this: Miquella is purple and gold + white, and Melina is purple and gold + black. Something interesting is that the fallen leaves of the Erdtree seen in Leyndell before the game's ending are already black and gold. If it's the fallen leaves that tell a story, these might ultimately have more significance. While I can't say I'm convinced of this myself, it would match even better with Melina's golden eye, which is more greyed than blackened.) Now, I personally believe this third form of gloam being black + white has greater significance and ties into other notable color pairings in the game, which I'll do my best to explain now. (Some might object that the Golden Order opposes white because they persecute the Albinaurics, but I would say their issue is with silver, not white itself.) So, in my view, there are three different manifestations of the color red, and three different manifestations of blue, which together create three different colors of gloam. (Well, I did notice the commonalities of stone and purple, but not the purple eye more specifically.) St. Here you can find the post, as well as some of the comments that influenced the developments in my perspective on this topic: https://www.reddit.com/EldenRingLoreTalk/comments/124eetz/gloam_is_definitely_purple_but_it_might_be/ Here's an updated post on all the reasons I think Melina is St. Trina. I've added a lot to this since first posting it (at least 6 points); I'm now up to 20 points of evidence: https://www.reddit.com/Eldenring/comments/11pra1some_contributions_to_the_melina_is_st_trina_is/ The Elphael post containing analysis of the woman and flower relief: https://www.reddit.com/EldenRingLoreTalk/comments/11r2o1i/elphael_theories_and_observations_on_various/ submitted by Dryadversity to EldenRingLoreTalk [link] [comments] |
2023.04.01 05:59 TitaniumTadpole Transferred 120 seedlings today to be planted May 1st!
| I have a small flower garden and large-ish vegetable garden (only the latter pictured) prepped and ready for planting, the largest amount of real-estate I've ever had to garden! I'm using a long disused bed at my workplace, and this is the first garden I've had in years. Since moving to the west I've only lived in apartments with little access to gardens. I even have a worm compost bin up and doing really well. I'm just really excited for this season. I have 4 of each of the flowers shown above. I'm particularly excited about the marigold and dianthus; both varieties were selected for high scent. I also have some sweet pea "high scent" already sewn in the flower bed. I don't have a photo of seed packets for the crops sewn so I'll list them here: a tomatillo of unknown variety, black crim tomatoes, cafram chili pepper, red & green orach, and Minnesota midget cantelope. I already have malaga and French breakfast radishes sewn in the garden, as well as some fennel as an experiment. I'm impatiently waiting for them all to come up. I suspect deer are going to make themselves a nuisance, but at least I have a garden again. submitted by TitaniumTadpole to gardening [link] [comments] |

2023.03.31 23:28 princeofwinners Idea for new Jackbox game. Cross between Joke Boat and Weapons drawn
Still trying to figure out but for the
The framing story- all the players are awaiting tribunal on a cruise for murdering someone, but they are all comedians and were witnesses but can only talk with cryptic jokes or something.
- Prompt: Each player is given a prompt with the name of another player, an object, and a list of potential murder weapons, including one "correct" weapon and several "red herrings". At the beginning of the game all players are given a name associated with the in game characteavatar that is separate from their jackbox name. The jokes are more like throwing shade at the other cruise ship attendees.
- Writing Time: Players are given the option of 1 out of 2 players to pick from as their target along with a setting and murder weapon. Players are given a set amount of time (e.g., 60 seconds) to come up with a joke that includes the player's name, the object/murder weapon, and a cryptic message about who they "murdered" using one of the listed murder weapons.
- Telling Jokes: Players take turns telling their jokes, making sure to deliver them in a humorous and engaging way. Each joke should include a reference to one of the listed murder weapons, but also include other misleading details to disguise the true target and weapon. Players get bonus points for telling the funniest joke, while also trying to disguise their motive.
- Guessing: Players earn points for correctly identifying the target and weapon of each joke. However, players can also earn points by fooling other players with their own red herrings. For example, if a player correctly guesses the "correct" weapon but is misled by a red herring about the target, they would earn fewer points. If a player correctly identifies both the target and the "correct" weapon while also avoiding red herrings, they would earn the most points.
- Scoring: The player with the most points at the end of the round is declared the winner.
- Elimination: The player with the fewest points is eliminated from the game. If there is a tie, both players are eliminated.
- Repeat: The game continues with a new round, using different prompts, objects, and murder weapons.
I've had By incorporating red herrings and using jokes to disguise the true target and weapon, the game becomes more challenging and unpredictable. Players will need to use their wit and strategic thinking to outsmart their opponents and come out on top.

2023.03.31 23:15 TheRedSojourner My Experiences on Downpour [Spoilers]
I'm nobody, I just wanted to lay my thoughts on Downpour after sinking about 100 hours into it last couple of weeks.
Two things before I begin:
We haven't finished the last slugcat yet.
Note the we: I haven't been playing alone. I played all the campaigns with a dear friend that is (or was, before we started grinding this game to dust) significantly more knowledable of the game, its creatures, their behaviors and the general systems about.
That means that this might not be the "intended" Rainworld Downpour experience, but it's what we got. Mostly for good.
This is ordered by the sequence in which we played the campaigns. Now, let's begin:
SurvivoMonk
We started a typical Survivor playthrough, since this was a clean save and we needed to complete either Monk or Survivor to get into the Downpour content. Made most of the journey to get eased back into the game, normal journey to Pebbles, some echoes, out to Ascend. Run of the mill, mostly a warm up, but we noticed some interesting differences in our run, a few floodgates that weren't there before, some areas slightly tweaked here and there. We noted them for our future runs.
First hurdle: While the 3 vanilla campaigns are enabled to work with Jolly Coop by default, the DLC campaigns are not. We needed to enable an override to play them. Thus far, I can't say I
entirely understand the reasoning behind this decision.
Next up:
Gourmand/Artificer
That means Gourmand campaign with the Artificer as accompanying character.
I'll say a lot more about the artificer later, but simply put, this was a power team. It directly contrasts with the survivor experience of being powerless and often having to double back or take more creative routes to solve issues. The Gourmand is a slow, cumbersome, but very powerful character with a magic bag of tricks and the ability to melee many enemies into submission. I'd probably pull my hair playing this character, my friend had a blast dropping his fat slugcat tail onto unsuspecting lizards and giving them permanent craneal damage.
The campaign itself was mostly normal with the addition of the "cravings". Gourmand has a checklist of things he wants to eat, about 20 different things. This is more or less optional. Other than that, after Pebbles we learned that the campaign had a different objetive. We wouldn't not ascend and end the campaign normally, we could also go west. One of the new floodgates we've seen before was now open. We took the long way there, comboing and mostly abusing the fauna as we learned to play our characters - we rather not check the wiki unless absolutely necessary - until we arrived. We found The Expanse, and it kicked our asses.
In a good way. The area was beautiful, full of new content, new and old threats mixing together. We died about fifteen times since we couldn't found for the lives of us a shelter in the way. When we did, it was smooth sailing, also with the realization that the 'broken' floodgates are now shelters too.
A few surprises later, we completed that run, rather suddenly, but we didn't finish the list of cravings. Still, we wanted to do it 100% so we went back into the save, to notice a strange incident: we were locked at first karma. Lucky, we just needed to collect the last few items and we had just enough passages saved to strategically move one after the other. The Red Centipede was the hardest, but only because it refused to spawn consistently. We had to check the wiki once or twice to figure what the hells were some of the symbols that we needed to chase after, but we managed in the end.
We completed the game again, and we generally had a good time. Some frustration here and there, but it's not the full Rainworld experience if you don't get instantly ambushed by a spider once upon leaving a pipe.
Rivulet/Rivulet
For this campaign I insisted we both play Rivulet as I had the feeling that water would be a huge factor, and with the supposed ability to breathe underwater it would have made it impossible for other slugtcats to traverse. Supposed, because despite saying many times the rivulet can breathe underwater, it can't - it just has a considerably larger lung capacity.
Other than that, the Rivulet doesn't have special powers, other than a ludicrous movement and jumping ability, to a point that it almost trivializes some of the harder jumping segments. I am okay with this; it's a DLC, a spice of the experience, a redefinition of the game, a remix.
My friend loved the Rivulet and he spent most of the playthrough spinning and doing high stake extreme slugcat parkour. I just mostly trucked along.
Despite the extreme movement of the Rivulet, it also has a notoriously hard campaigns. Very, very short cycles are the first thing you notice, and that means you are always in a hurry. We were forced to plan our movements and take every shelter one after the other, and as soon as we reached the Outskirts we lost our advantage of just swimming to the next shelter, as the areas that don't fill with water become normally lethal to the Rivulet as any other slugcat.
The difficulty didn't come only from the cycles, neither just the enemies.
We decided to go to 5p again, this time taking the path to the left as my friend insisted it would be a shorter route. We avoided Shaded Citadel and the Leg and instead we made it to the Arrays, Sky Island, Cannopy, and finally The Wall; this turned to be the correct and only path, as we learned rather surprisingly that 5P was not doing so hot, and by the state of things, we pieced together quickly that the Rivulet's campaig takes place way after the Survivor and the Monk.
My friend hates Unfortunate Development and the zero G environment. Great zone, amazing lore, but we like gravity and moving normally. I am inclined to agree sometimes. Unfortunate Development is now worse; it's now The Rot. Great zone, amazing lore, surprising headache.
The Rot is a stunning area, it's, as the cool kids would say,
large af, and we tried to map as much as possible, but every sojourn costed us time, patience and added to our frustrations. DLL are some of the most dangerous enemies in the game, and they are everywhere here, and the rot walls make every small room a hazard by itself. We found only two shelters on our way down, and while we were curious and empowered by the need to see where 5P's request would take us, we also suffered a lot making it there, despite having a character with such extremely mobility, that mobility means nothing in Zero G.
We found the Cell, eventually, and we were pleasantly surprised by its effect, and the way it affected The Rot. We explored for a bit longer, but eventually we desisted from spending more time there as we had already been stuck there for hours, and now that we were carrying the cell, most of the time one of us had to piggyback the other to make it through some of the now gravity-regular zones.
We made it out, and I had already pieced together what was our next move. Moon.
We thought to move through the Underhang, take the path to Shaded Citadel and enter the Shores, but the Underhang was already a difficult area to traverse, and in the timeline of the Rivulet, it's even worse. After losing all our karma we gave up and smoked a passage instead. We'd go from Wastes instead. The journey was surprisingly fast, and now that 5P's structure had quieten down, the cycles weren't an issue. This came to be as a bit of a shock, as we rushed to 5p we barely had any time to feel the effect of the short cycles that I thought would hound us the entire playthrough, but it was more important to see the world change from our actions.
The Submerged Superstructure was a place I wanted to go far before Downpour was a thing, and the Rivulet made it the perfect excuse to visit it. Due to the nature of the Cell, again, we ended up piggybacking one after the other and zooming through the structure. Massive, beautiful, and in contrast with the Rot, strangely calm and easy to traverse. We just spent a few cycles there, until we found The Heart that Moon had hinted before and we returned the Cell.
The campaign doesn't end there. We were greeted with yet another new scene, and a new enemy to stlak our nightmares. We cleaned the zone back and forth, and exited left after dying more times than I wanted to Scavengers. I love scavs, I hate fighting scavs. My friend has the opposite mindset, so these campaigns we've been fighting scavs non stop at every chance.
Anyway - out we go. We noticed the steps built over the top of the cortex, went down, visited Moon, and there the campaign ends. We had a little technical issue and our game crashed, probably as we were playing Jolly Coop, but we could always just snipe the cutscene from youtube. The art was adorable, and we continued with Rivulet to see if there was more. Moon calls you Ruffles (eeeeeeee~) and that was mostly it.
SpearmasteSpearmaster and then SpearmasteRivulet
As the last one doesn't unlock until you finish BOTH the Rivulet and the Spearmaster, our last options were between the Spearmaster, and the Artificer. We went Spearmaster, I insisted we both play Spearmaster to struggle a little with the intended gameplay instead of choosing our favorite cats every time, made our edgy vampire boys, and out we went.
It instantly kicked our asses.
Outskirts was wild. Wilder than in a Hunter run.
Spearmaster's ability to infinitely produce spears at no cost is absolutely great, but he doesn't benefit from any powerful movement ability, and his unique feeding mechanism means that he must be in constant conflict to feed, as small animals barely sustain him. His chunky tail also sabogates many of the slugcat maneuvers, so at best he can do rolljumps assisted by throwing spears galore.
We developed the theory that this is a prequel campaign, and all the spears lying around in the other campaigns are because the Spearmaster was there at some point.
Regardless, we decided to go, instead, to Moon and take the path to the right this time. We took almost 10 cycles just to make it to Shaded Citadel, as we kept dying to the overly aggressive fauna and the scavs. When we made it there, finally, we were met with the nightmare that we found in the Rivulet playthrough. We died 10 more times, , mostly to scavs, made it to what I expected would be Shoreline, died other 10 more times to scavs and by that point I was so fed up to scavs that I just nagged my friend to start again.
We started again. This time with the idea to befriend the scavs, much to my friend's chagrin. However, he had the condition that if we did, he'd play Rivulet instead. Fine. A compromise it was.
We took the path down to Wastes this time, however, we very, very quickly befriended the Scavs as at every encounter we had we just dropped a few spears and any pearl we found in the way. After that, the run was about 800% easier without their kill squads chasing us at every location. We made it to what was now the Processing Plant, with its new noxious mechanic, but we coursed rather quickly through it. Made it again to the "new Shoreline", and as we couldn't find a way into Moon, we ended up doubling back and going back to Shaded Citadel, taking the usual path to 5P instead.
We finally entered Unfortunate Development - which was considerably easier, confirming the theory that this was a prequel campaign, and had a no-dialogue scene with 5p that left me absolutely confused and my friend giggling. Pipebomb cat.
We were clueless for a bit, but we had a last idea where to go. Since the Spearmaster has the unique mechanic of unlocking old logs, we had been roaming more than usual off the beaten path trying to find the transmissions. In doing so, we noticed that there was now a path eastward from The Precipide, a zone we've been visiting every run hoping to eventually find something there. Now we did.
Pre-collapse Moon was an interesting, but uneventful location. It's nice to see a new zone, but it doesn't do anything by itself to really stand out, most of the paths are circular with no real reason to take one or the other, and in the end we felt it was mostly just a mild scenic route, like Submerged Superstructure, except that Submerged Superstructure was fun, and this was... not.
Moon tasked us with sending a transmission West. Where? We had a debate about that; I thought she meant the communication tower on The Wall, my friend thought she meant the communication tower in The expanse. We ended up Passaging and going as far as possible to the Expanse first.
I'll note here that since Spearmaster has no mouth, he can't store the pearl that 5p takes from you, which is necessary to advance through the quest, we found accidentally but fortunately. If my friend hadn't been playing Rivulet, I'd have died of frustration lugging that thing around all over the place, as it simply plays against the only strength of the character. Luckily, Jolly Coop averted that frustration.
Back to it: We went all the way to Subterranean to the entrance of the Expanse. The door is closed. D'ouh.
So we passaged and made it back to the Wall, checked the tower, and nope. It's not there either. We are lost. Time to check steam forums. Somebody says sky island, sure. it's between, let's go there.
We made it to Sky Island. Visit the Echo location hoping that's the communication tower. Nope. It's not there either. Fine. I crack the map in the wiki, and find a zone we hadn't noticed before. Go there, go up, the campaign ends.
We were left a little... underwhelmed.
Spearmaster is the most balanced character of the DLC, the feeding mechanic is great, the infinite spears are a great tool to have given his
incredible cake, but the campaign was the most underwhelming of the bunch we played. Just go back and forth delivering that rather annoying pearl, I feel it's largely full of wasted potential, as his campaign just ends nonchalantly with no great effect, no journey, no special achievement, it just... ends.
Currently playing: ArtificeArtificer
This campaign started as ArtificeRivulet, but we moved back to ArtificeArtificer as the new zones make it very clear it's meant for the Artificer to move. And oh boy, the Artificer is strong, it's by far the strongest character of the DLC, unless the Saint somehow proves to be even more broken.
The Artificer can double jump, stun-explode, maul, remove lodged spear, crafts explosives, he's a goddamn carnivore and he has all the base stats of the Hunter. He may not be as fast as the Rivulet, but he -can- go faster by exploding correctly.
His campaign is also the most combat focused, as we learned quickly that he has beef with the scavs. Despite my reprehension to keep fighting them, in this campaign it seemed anti-thematic to try and befriend them, plus there's his unique mechanic of Karma-stealing, so a-murdering we go.
We made it rather easily to the Leg from the spawnpoint, but going straight to Unfortunate Development wasn't an option since we couldn't hit the karma door, and no helpful scavs were spawning in the Underhand to help us get through. Instead, we went up the wall, and we became official citizens of 5P city.
Now we could finally enter the bloody door I've been checking the last 4 playthroughs trying to open. And oh boy, it's a warzone on the other city.
We killed a lot of creatures in the Spearmaster's run; we are getting consistently more than 10 kills per cycle in the Artificer's run, most of them are scavs. The new zone, that I've been waiting to see since that first time I was mesmerized with the background after visiting 5p when the game was new and we knew absolutely dogcrap about the lore, it was a real treat, and here's where we are now at the time of writing, dying to all its wonders, considering our options, gathering lore, and more importantly, piling corpses.
Update: We have now finished the Artificer run, with what seems to be the bad ending. Yes, for once, there are more than one ending to the run (at least insofar what you can consider a mechanically-coded ending). Given that the final act locks you down at 0 karma, that means that you can't do like the Gourmand and go back to complete it (even if it wasn't the idea with the Gourmand either, given how his run does the same) since I am inclined to believe the alternate ending requires you to raise your karma. We might replay Artificer, as we didn't see the whole of his backstory and I want to check what the other path entails, but for the time being, we are moving on.
Saint/Saint
Oh boy. This is it. It's not Rainworld anymore. It's Snowworld, and it wants you frozen solid.
I had already read somewhere that the Saint campaign takes place in the far future after the Rivulet events, but the instant shock of seeing a familiar location in a very different form was entirely new and unexpected.
The whole game is slightly altered, no location bears the same name, the spawns are aggressive, normal centipedes are almost absent and, sometimes thankfully, replaced by wingtepedes - skytepedes? whatever - and the rest of the fauna seems slightly displaced. The flora however is notably missing, short of the extremely obnoxious worm grass that will die probably just slightly after the heat death of the universe, mimics and kelp plants are entirely gone as far as we've seen.
Food is an issue. A big issue. There are no cycles anymore, but the time is still kicking, we are again racing for each shelter like we are playing a rivulet run. There might be no rain, but the storm starts to wind up after some minutes, and we are forced to deal not with deathly rain, but with seething cold. Body heat is now a mechanic, and dying of hypothermia is an option, and one very likely option given how aggresively the storm encroaches on you.
What about the Saint? No spears, all tongue. Average stats, small food bar, almost nothing saved over for the next cycle, but the tongue man, the tongue. HMM. You aren't just a tubeworm, you have so much more control and power with it. The Artificer might have had mobility with the double jump, but you can climb any wall, go through any ceiling, powerswing stupidly far distances. It's hard to control, but the inputs are very tight, to the point I ended moving back to keyboard as I am more comfortable with keys than the sometimes whimsical analog controls.
As soon as we started the run we already knew we had to achieve enlightment. Which is interesting, as the Saint doesn't start with a cap at Self-Preservation like most slugcats, but at the second. Sex? Can't remember. We know by heart the location of all the normal echoes, we know there's one right next to us. We begin there, plan for the next, die an unfortunate number of times to the platforms as we begin the process of mastering the art of tonguing our way to victory.
We make it through, with just enough food to rest by the Wall's shelter, finally! We just need to cross the birdge and-... where's the other side? There's no other side. The Wall is not there. We double back, grab the Echo and opt for the way I wanted to avoid: Array farms toward Subterranean, to grab the leftmost echo.
Cycles are short, but they are intense. We go fast, avoid danger as we can, but the openness of these maps doesn't give us the power we need. Waiting for the deerhare is a pain, we die once a spit away from a new merciful midway shelter, we learned after we can gain body heat by pressing ourselves against the deerhares. We always take that extra pip of food as sometimes we only find 3 pips in the way, every little pip is precious at this point.
We don't take that long, and we are mostly lucky to make it that far left. We don't have food so we skip the shelter and go straight to the echo, reset the day. We are back at the midway shelter, but from here we can double back and head toward Outskirts instead. We do that.
We take the painfully long way since
somebody insisted it was the shortest path, not going to give any names but I'm looking in their general direction, still we survived the cycle and made it to the shelter next to Outskirts. Double back again, take the echo, out we go.
Outskirts, now the frozen suburbia or something like that - most zones have thematically cool names, literally - is a warzone. I'm getting more Rivulet vibes, but we have greater mobility now that we usually have a ceiling. We are zooming through the zones but every room is a hazard that could end our day short, as the Saint is particularly frail and most grabs usually kill you. In Jolly Coop you have the advantage that only one has to make it to the shelter alive, but you have the equally burdening disadvantage that
everybody has to make it one way or another. Without the ability to fight and do more than rockstun for an instant, recovering a fallen friend is usually a deathly gamble, and one that can't be avoided.
Where we are now? Eastward. We wanted to check the
Shaded Citadel Frozen Cathedral's echo. We stumbled with something that we weren't expecting, but we should have seen coming along the way. We survived 2^36 spiders along the way, made it to the shelter, and begun a climb that is almost sadistic. One of us died in most journies and ended up carrying the other, we have mobility, but the camera itself is always our enemy. I hate the fixed camera design so much, but it's great for Parsec and I have absolutely no input lag 99% of the time, so it's another compromise to take.
There's nothing more to report for now. The next time I update this, it will be probably the last.
Closing words
When we purchased the DLC from Steam, the first review on Downpour was negative, exceedingly worldly (not as much as me, I have no idea
who would bother reading this but I applaud you if you did), and the guy said that the DLC was the antithesis of everything that Rainworld was. We weren't "parts of the ecosystem trying to survive, to figure where we fit into it", we were "slugcat OCs zooming through the obstacles trying to do some arbitrary bidding of the gods", and I agree with that assessment. However, I do not find it a negative; surely, it is not the same as the game we played, but as I wrote before, it's a Remix, it's another take, a different new spice to an old dish, and we had plenty of fun with the new abilities, and despite how powerful some cats may be, we still die, we died a lot, as the game itself and the world hasn't stopping evolving. It's just not just more cats, it's a whole new world with new cats, and new challenges designed for them, and all that? That's what we paid for, and I an so happy that we have it as official content of the game.
Also: I may update this post once we finish Artificer and/or Saint. No promises are made.
Also 2: I said I don't understand entirely why the DLC campaigns couldn't be played in MP. That's because the campaigns can, but there are some caveats. Rivulet was designed for one Rivulet, at best you can have 2 as you can piggyback one another, but any more than that means that you'd have to go back and forth or spawn more Cells to make it viable for a third and fourth player to move along. The game is already hard af and sometimes having more players just makes it even harder. Situations like this are largely uncommon, but finding one of them is enough to put a stop to that run, if only for long enough to disable any extra characters and let one or two slugcats handle the problematic part by themselves.
That is all. Keep on droprolling my friends.
Oh, and the link to my friend's Deviant's that made some Rainworld drawings.
