2023.06.04 08:22 takashi-kovak Should you withdraw Dividend Distributions or reinvest? A deep dive analysis

Should you withdraw Dividend Distributions or reinvest? A deep dive analysis
Many have asked a question "should you reinvest dividend distribution (DD) or use it as a cashflow" to pay bills, augment your lifestyle or plan to retire, and so on? Most of the feedback was to reinvest DD, with some suggesting withdrawing % of DD or withdrawing all of it. But, I have yet to see any detailed analysis like backtesting returns for Reinvestment (i.e. reinvest DD @ DRIP event) or DD Cashflow strategy (and use the income to buy something else) & tax implications on both those strategies. My goal is to share the analysis so you can make informed decisions.
I am using QYLD as it is similar covered call strategy like JEPI/JPEQ and has 10yrs of data for backtesting purposes. Note that the comparison mainly highlights returns and taxes' impact on Reinvestment vs. distribution strategies and is less about the underlying assets and their performance. Please share if there is a better comparison for JEPI with the same underlying assets as JEPI and uses covered call strategy.

TL;DR

  1. JEPI is showing resilience in gross returns (7%) when applying Dividend Distribution (DD) Cashflow strategy, in contrast to QYLD negative return (-25%) with the same strategy. However, it is only 3yr old, so I would wait until another 3-5 years to see if the trend continues. Until then, I recommend reinvest dividends.
  2. Taxes and Inflation erode nominal returns and, in some cases, turn negative, as JEPI's income is considered ordinary income (usually taxed @ 33% compared). JEPI's net-return per year (1.9% in 2022) has been lower than CD APY (~5%), though I would still invest in JEPI over the long term as I prefer equity market exposure.
  3. Yearly tax implication is enormous for both DD Reinvestment and Cashflow strategies. The reinvestment strategy is especially tricky as DD is immediately reinvested @ DRIP. Additionally, the problem is exacerbated as YoY taxes are growing @ double digit for the Reinvestment strategy. You would have to either sell % of the ETF, allocate only % of DD for DRIP, or use alternative income sources to pay taxes. To mitigate the burden, I recommend having a hybrid strategy of withdrawing % of DD to pay for taxes OR using ROTH IRA (though contribution limits apply).
  4. The total gross returns (Principal + DD) delta between the DD Cashflow VS. Reinvestment strategy was lower than I anticipated. I expected the delta would have been >50% due to the compounding effect.
  5. If you're in <60yrs or do not plan to retire, consider a Reinvestment strategy with a plan to set aside % of your income or DD Cashflow for taxes every year. If you're above >60yrs or plan to retire, consider moving to ETFs/Stocks that pay qualified dividends to lower your tax burden.

Analysis

I will break down the analysis by principal return, distribution returns, and net returns after tax and inflation adjustment and compare that to benchmarks like SPX, and Nasdaq.
Principal Return
  1. JEPI with $1,000,000 over the past 3yrs showed a gross +40% increase (+$400K) return with DD reinvestment but was resilient with DD Cashflow showing a gross +7% increase (+$75K). Both strategies are lower than SPX return over the same period (~100%).
  2. Compared to another covered call ETF, QYLD performed poorly with a negative return of -25% (-$260K) with DD Cashflow. On the contrary, DD reinvestment showed outsized gains of +80% returns (+$800K), showing the power of compounding. However, it still underperformed than Nasdaq (+166%).
  3. Takeaway:
    1. JEPI was still positive with DD Cashflow, and my hypothesis is that JEPI is a well managed ETF & the fund is actively balancing to preserve principal while still paying out good dividends. However, I would wait a few more years before starting to use JEPI DD as a cashflow.
    2. Generally, high-yield stocks/ETF returns have a lower returns than indices. But, the fund should trend in the same direction as the indices. If they are not, the fund is not worth the investment, and you should look elsewhere.
JEPI Principal return with DD Reinvestment vs Cashflow
JEPI Returns with Reinvestment vs Cashflow compared to SPX
QYLD Principal Return with DD Reinvestment vs Cashflow
QYLD Returns compared to Cashflow
Dividend Payouts
  1. JEPI's total dividend payout over 3yrs (as of May 2023) was $350K with reinvestment vs $305K with DD Cashflow (delta: -$50K). I expected the delta would have been much higher, but compounding usually grows exponentially (see QYLD below) after 5-6 years of reinvestment, so I would wait and continue DD reinvestments.
  2. On the contrary, QYLD Dividend paid out $1.2M with Reinvestment over ~8yrs vs. $811K with Cashflow (approx half), indicating DD Reinvestment compounding resulted in higher payouts over a more extended period.
JEPI Dividend Payouts

QYLD Dividend Payouts
Yield Growth
  1. JEPI YoY gross yield is trending upwards though it needs to stay substantially higher than inflation to make returns net positive. See the net returns section below that shows net returns after tax and inflation adjustments. It is not pretty!
  2. Compared to QYLD, YOY gross yield stays much higher than inflation, providing net positive inflation-adjusted returns.
JEPI Dividend Yield vs Inflation
QYLD Yield vs Inflation rate
Tax Implication
  1. Both JEPI DD Reinvestment and Cashflow produce a huge tax burden for investors (calculated at 33% tax bracket). As seen below, the taxes trend line for JEPI Reinvestments is diverging & trending upwards from the Cashflow strategy. You can expect the divergence to grow exponentially due to the compounding effect, as validated by QYLD Reinvestment taxes owed are 2x of Cashflow.
  2. Taxes owed reduces net dividend yield over time, indicating that "tax drag" becomes significant over time. As expected, the tax implication with DD Cashflow is lower than DD Reinvestment due to the compounding effect of the latter.
  3. In numbers, you would owe ~$50K (@ 33% tax-brac) in taxes on dividends earned in 2022 with the Reinvestment strategy vs $41K with the Cashflow strategy. To see this over a 10yr period, QYLD Cashflow strategy shows near-flat trend line for taxes owed, whereas Reinvestment shows double-digit growth YoY in taxes owed.
  4. Unless you can come up with a lump sum of $40K-$50K (in 2022) for JEPI, I recommend setting aside 33% of DD for taxes. Even better, use ROTH IRA tax-advantaged investment, though you may be limited in how much you can contribute in a year ($6,000 max < 50yr).
JEPI Taxes owed YoY - Reinvestment vs Cashflow
QYLD Taxes owed YOY - Reinvestment vs Cashflow
Net Returns
  1. After paying taxes & adjusting for inflation, your returns are less than 5% (CD APY benchmark), and in some cases, negative. For e.g., JEPI Cashflow strategy post-tax and inflation adj. barely gave a 2% return in 2022, and the returns were negative in 2021. The Reinvestment strategy showed a slightly better return of 3.37% in 2022 but was negative (-0.89%) in 2021.
  2. Similarly, the QYLD Cashflow strategy shows negative returns in 2021 and 2022, but the Reinvestment strategy did far better (>5% return), again showing the Reinvestment strategy plays out well over the long term.
  3. Key takeaway is to track JEPI's net returns over time and rebalance if you the net returns are below 5%.

Disclaimer: I am sharing my personal take on JEPI. I am not a financial advisor, so please do your own research and consult FA. My goal is to share my research learnings while building my portfolio. This is my way of sharing back to the community, as I have learned so much from this community.

2023.06.04 08:21 briargoldeye Matrix scoreboard for multi-column scores?

I am trying to create a scoreboard for an event, which will be used to display rankings visually to participants and which will be used to calculate scores.
I have three columns for the scores. The first is a dropdown with the name of the team. The second is the number of completed puzzles (1-7). The third is their completion rank specifically for that puzzle.
So for example, if the Red team was the 3rd team to complete Puzzle 5, the columns would be:
A: Red
B: 5
C: 3
This has already been generated, and works pretty seamlessly! (Fingers crossed that it stays that way...) The scoreboard is a matrix, with each puzzle being a column and the teams ranked 1-10 in the rows. It is filled in using variants on this formula:
=if(AND($B$2:$B=5,$C$2:$C=3),$A$2:$A)
I was hoping that this expression would search for where in column B it indicates 5 and in column C it indicates 3, then returns the team name from Column A.
This works for... halfway through the first puzzle, but then simply Stops, for some reason. I will also note that how much of the first column appears seems to depend on what the first value is. If the first value happens to be Red, it will fill in the first four teams. If it is Blue, it returns seven teams. In any case, it never reaches any of the other columns of the scoreboard.
All this to say... help!

2023.06.04 08:19 This-Sun-3805 Advice for how to report dog attack?

Hey guys!
TLDR at bottom
Some background context, we were walking our 10yo GreatDanexMastiff with some doggy friends. We get to the offleash area at the park and I see this big Husky strutting around and I get a little worried. My dog is really friendly unless it's an unneutered male (my dog is fixed). His bully breed tendencies come out and he doesn't submit in a fight so I avoid any male dogs that could present a problem. He is an open book usually, you can tell immediately if he doesn't like another dog I'm new to the area and the people I was walking with warned me that this Husky is rather aggressive and tends to attack a lot of the other dogs including their dog on 2 occasions. I leashed my dog and was trying to leave. His dog came up and there was a little altercation I managed to break up by kicking a stick at the Husky feet while gribbing the collar on my dog. The guy then proceed to say DW it'll be a good lesson if his dog gets bitten by mine. I'm less than impressed and told him my dog is 10, I don't want him getting into a fight with an unfixed Husky in his prime that will be incredibly vicious. So I told him I would leave since he clearly wasn't willing to put a leash on his dog. We left with our dogs to a different park entirely. Everything is going great until I see the husky and now another dog, whom based off everyone elses reaction is also trouble. It's an oval with one entrance and they have to walk down a hill to get in so they most definitely saw us. We leash up the dogs and leave, husky comes over to investigate again so I give my partner the leash and block the Husky and tell him to back off - he does. We throw him a ball and off he goes.
Not long after we are at another area just letting the dogs have a last quick run before heading off (I didn't trust the owner and husky to not follow us again) when suddenly over the hill the husky appears heading straight for my dog. It's right next to me but It happens so quickly. It was a horrifically vicious dog fight, when I tried to pull the husky off by his legs he had his teeth sunk in my dogs skull and was tearing it open, I was too scared getting bitten to do much more than try and throw my jumper between them to break line of sight and attempt to snag the husky while the guys trying to pull them apart. At some point the owner comes sprinting up, body slams into his dog kicking and punching, we pull my dog away and separate them.
At this stage I'm seeing red because he kept following us, I told him the dogs don't get along and there was just no control by him. I start yelling at him that he is irresponsible and some choice words for following us and that he is responsible for his dog attacking mine. He looks ready to square up to me but apparently my partner is staring him down over my shoulder and he walks away saying he's being nice to me today.
I look at my dog and see the extent of the damage and loose my mind again. I demand he pay my vet bills and owe up to his fault, he tells me to fuck off so I call him a coward - Not the best way to handle the situation but I felt furious and it felt good dressing down a man 3x my size if I'm being honest.
We call the cops, they can't do anything. I'm currently on a 1k vet bill and he may loose his eye. What can I do in this situation? In hindsight I should have left after he followed me the first time and probably not blown up at him so much but just based off the encounters I have heard from the other dog owners I didn't feel like being another women he bullies around
I know that reality is that if his dog is taken away from him it'll get put down. I don't blame his dog at all, a dog is a dog after all but it's a big aggressive dog that's has a attack histor that he isn't being responsible with and never has on a leash from what I've been told. He would have killed my dog if we hadn't separated them, and what if someone less experienced or younger who doesn't know what to do in that situation gets in the crossfire.
TLDR: my dog got viciously attacked by an aggressive uneutered husky, police said they can't do anything, vet bill is already at 1k and owner refused to take ownership of his loss of control. We have the dog's name and photos of him and his dog. Other people have had his dog attack theirs before and apparently multiple complaints have been submitted. Has anyone got any idea what to do here?
Sorry for the wall of text and any grammaformating issues. On my phone and angry all over again writing this out

2023.06.04 08:05 sigpowr Sig Report - AI and Share Lending

Two topics in one post. First, a quick comment on the current AI buzz. The entire financial press is talking about how AI isn’t just the next big thing in technology, but that it is possibly the biggest investable movement in technology history – bigger than the internet and smart phones. Stocks that are associated with AI are attracting massive investment dollars. What is more ‘AI’ than hardware sensors and software combining to give machines ‘vision’ that allows them to act much faster than any human operator and without creating bigger second-order problems due to human reflexive reactions? To be more specific, what is more ‘AI’ than MicroVision?
Second topic – brokerage share lending programs. I received a telephone call from TD Ameritrade Thursday while I was traveling so I used a little windshield time to talk when I normally would not have taken the call. The specialist freely acknowledged the tight lending market in MVIS shares and the quantity of shares that I control, stating that “we had a mutually beneficial opportunity” for great income. The “mutually” is because I and TDA would split the earned interest 50/50. He was quick to point out that “the loaned shares are 100% collateralized through a third-party bank”. I requested some written information, and he immediately emailed me the document “Frequently Asked Questions: Fully Paid Lending Income Program”.
There are two standouts in the FAQ document. The first is regarding the question, “What are the risks in the Fully Paid Lending Income Program?”. The Answer is: “A primary risk is counterparty default”. The second standout FAQ is, “How will SIPC coverage be impacted?”. The Answer is: “SIPC will not cover the securities position on loan. However, the loan will be backed by 100% collateral held at a third-party bank”.
I’m on my 40th year in community banking and I have seen a lot of cases of “counterparty default”. The lender never comes out whole due to ‘scope of time’ in resolving the default, legal costs, and collateral value. Defaults involve a Judge, a Court date way in the future, and attorneys to represent the lender – they take many months, and often years, to resolve. When the collateral is finally recovered and sold, it is nearly always a small percentage of the loan plus legal costs that are recovered by the lender.
The TDA FAQs does state that “TD Ameritrade is your counter party on fully paid lending transactions. If TD Ameritrade were to default on its obligations as defined in the MSLA, you would have the right to withdraw the collateral from the custodian bank in the manner described in the Collateral Administration Agreements.” Does anyone think this custodian bank will release the “collateral” without you having to hire legal counsel and provide a library of proof that TDA defaulted? If the counterparty does default, that will also be a much bigger deal than just custodian-held collateral (think Silicon Valley Bank).
Consider why such a default would happen and exactly what it would mean for your stock shares. The default would happen because the stock price is rocketing higher, and the shorting party becomes insolvent and cannot return the borrowed shares to your counterparty/broker. The TDA FAQs state the loans are secured “with FINRA approved methods of collateral (cash, U.S. Treasury bills and Treasury Notes)”. As the stock price of your ‘loaned shares’ rockets higher, the counterparty will presumably have to add more collateral to keep up with the value of the loaned stock. When default happens, no more collateral gets added, but the stock price will continue the ascent. The collateral will be sold at some point (hopefully days/weeks and not months) to pay you your portion for your loaned shares, but you will not get your stock back – you will get the cash from the liquidated collateral. Effectively, you sold your stock at the stock price on the date of the default (could be for less money if the U.S. Treasuries held as collateral are worth less than when they were purchased due to interest rates rising). You no longer participate in the increasing stock price because your shares are gone.
The shorting parties really aren’t taking the risk of a major short-squeeze – the stock lender is taking the risk! Once the shorting party burns through their equity, they get to walk away bankrupt - "you can't squeeze blood out of a turnip" is the old banker saying. The stock lender then walks away with only the daily interest they collected for lending prior to the default, as a gain on their investment. I am CEO of a professional business that makes its money by lending, but I won’t lend my MicroVision stock shares no matter how high the interest rate goes. The high interest rate says it all about the risk that you are taking!

2023.06.04 07:55 PrincessoftheDead Tidings from Hell’s Hydro Plant [Part 1]

June 3, 2023. 10:34PM Perhaps I am being a little unfair when I say that this place is Hell’s collection plate for those not wicked enough for eternal condemnation but not quite lucky enough to be born to purgatory, which is to say, I am right at home. I suppose Wylwood is my home now. As someone once told me, “You really never can go back.” Not that I ever want to go back home, though I suppose the offer is still on the table. But I am getting ahead of myself. Wylwood is one of those little towns tucked deep in the dark Appalachia forest where everyone knows every single thing about everyone else and their last twelve generations going back. Just ask any person you run across what exactly a “double first cousin” is. Of course, for the towns older women, this is treated as a matchmaking request, so please apply caution here. Wylwood is a small town, population of around 2,200, if you only count people and not the many ghouls, bears, and other large commonly thought to be extinct mammals that call this place home. The town is rather snake-like and follows along an abundant river that carves a path between steep and unforgiving hillside. Incidentally, as a traveling passenger goes by, they will notice all of the towns buildings that haven’t been burned or boarded up are located between rock and river with nearly ludicrous amounts of train track interspersed. Coal, poverty and despair are the major exports of this town. Visitors to the nearby national park are the only true imports. The town also proudly supports it’s very own emergency room, post office, and no less than three dollar stores, and one restaurant in a converted car repair garage. My name is Kate Fugate, you may call me Kate, you may call me Katie, frankly you can call me Fido for all I care. You may not call me by my birth name, and just to make myself clear, no, I’m not going to tell you, so there. I am 27, and I have recently decided that I need to start this online diary as well, this is really, really, REALLY hard for me to acknowledge. “Just accept it Kate.” My inner dialogue says. “Must I though?” I argue, “Nothing is certain, it is not set.” “Damn it, Kate.” The dialogue is much more forceful this time “It happens to EVERYONE, it has spared NONE of them, not one, and you are not special.” “Fine, but let me do this on my terms.” I concede. I, Kate Fugate, probably, though will not say for certain, have a hereditary, issue? Conundrum? The problem is, my entire hereditary line of females, probably going back to Lilith herself has had an early onset dementia with some downright weird symptoms. The great majority of them are able to “pass” as socially normal but everyone always feels something is just a bit off. Would they feel the same, I wonder if they shared a home for as long as I did? The point of this journaling is because I want to retain as much memory as possible and I want a reference point, so when or if my grasp with reality become untethered, I won’t be too adrift. Already, I feel something is very wrong with the picture. Why in one of the biggest coal producing areas is there a hydroelectric plant? You tell me. No, seriously tell me. Most of the locals are opposed to renewable energy as they feel it is a threat to their livelihood but when talking about this specific hydro plant it is considered absolutely crucial. Why is it too, that absolutely no one local would be interested in this job when it was a better option than most in the area? I was offered a very generous sign on bonus with the government after graduating with a Marine Biology degree that, after being given ton of loans, I found out was not in as much demand as the college led me to believe. The contract outlines that I must stay here for 10 years, housing will be provided, but failure to stay my term will result in “severe penalties.” “And what exactly are those penalties, Mrs. Wedgewood?” I ask to the 6ft, very stern woman across a poorly constructed desk from me. I estimate she is in her 60’s going on her 70’s. She is wearing khaki pants and a blue button down shirt and has white hair that is nearly shimmering over with a purple tint. “Listen, Miss, umm, Miss is the name your pare- “ She looked at me inquisitively before I cut her off. “Yes, yes it is. They were non traditional individuals. Just call me Kate, please.” I give her a look to hope she finds it in her to understand. “Okay, Miss Kate, listen if you are unsure about this job, my recommendation is that you don’t take it. I have seen many like you come and go. The job isn’t hard but for whatever reason, people can not handle it. It is no secret, the turnover is high, most don’t last the year. I have seen people driven mad, people have had accidents, people have -“ I cut her off again. “What do you mean, ‘went mad’ ?“ I ask. “Well, one of my men, maybe the fifth or sixth from the last one, said he seen a snake with a million eyes wink at him, then said it started shooting him with rainbows. And that when he drove off a cliff, into the river, we never recovered the body.” She replied almost flatly like this was the fifteenth time she told this story and couldn’t believe it herself. It took me a second of awe stuck silence to realized, “But wait, if he died how do you know what he saw?” “All vehicles are installed with cameras and audio equipment, for insurance of course.” She was getting tired of all my questions. “We do try and make note of unusual events and get Washington visitors to collect recordings and water samples among other things every other week. They are very invested in our operations here and you will get used to them in time. Now dear, what does your family think, it is a big move after all?” I squirmed a bit as I thought out the ‘right answer’ for these situations. “Well you see Mrs. Wedgewood, the thing is I am a, uh well, let’s go with orphan?” I sputtered out hoping she would not ask for clarification like many others have. “Well dear, I am not going to dive any deeper into that, although I am sorry for your loss, and I’ve been there many times too. We can go ahead and offer you a position as a plant operator, and we can start as early as tomorrow. The singles cabins are ready for move in today, though it isn’t much to look at.” Her dark chocolate brown eyes held a look someone gives before announcing to a plane full of passengers that the good news was that none of them would have to pay for their plane today, the bad news was they wouldn’t be the ones collecting the refund. “I’ll take the job.” I said with all of the enthusiasm I could muster as a newly installed lifer“Do you allow cats in the housing, by the way?” She gave me a big smile of slightly mismatched coffee stained teeth. “Yes, we will allow it. But can I see the little thing?” Of course, I led her to my truck. It was a black 1992 Dodge Dakota, the floor was nearly falling out of the bottom, the lining in the roof was being held up by tacks, staples, glue and pine sap. The paint was chipping off, leaving behind bare metal and rust. The gate of the bed was barely holding together by sting and barbed wire, but damn it, she was mine and to me, the most beautiful thing in the whole fucking universe for that matter. It was something of a parting gift from Todd and Ron, the last thing I would ever receive from them. I wonder if they knew that. “Here Stan, psst psst psst.” I call, as you can see a pair of eyes peeking out of under the seat. I pick him up only to be met with terrified screaming coming from Mrs. Wedgewood. “Kill it, kill it now. What even is that thing.” She said with forceful conviction. It took me two hours to convince her that Stan was probably harmless, or at least I hope he is. Hell, I had the same reaction to Stan when I first met him. You see, I was basically living out of my truck before this job. During the trip, I found several gas stations only to find that every single one either had no functioning bathroom or that they were not public bathrooms and the cashier only took payment in oaths of eternal allegiance to the muses. I didn’t have time for that nonsense, so I popped out back long enough to make friends with a tree and get back on that road. I must’ve left my door open just long enough for the little bastard to crawl in. Next thing I know, I have this overgrown buck naked rat licking the salt off my leg. After recreating a PSA on ghost drivers, me and Stan got better acquainted over some chicken salad with cranberry jelly. We then moved to the actual dam site, it was large old two story brick building approximately 12 miles out of town. The building was most likely built in the 20’s or 30’s and had a large art-deco window spanning from first to second floor. There was a large staircase going down the hill in which the under the building sat yet another level partially underground. From one side of the bottom of the stairs was a large metal sidewalk with grated floors overhanging the river, and on the other side was a path leading to the woods. We walked in silence until we stood on the grated sidewalk. “These are the output valves for the plant.” Mr. Wedgewood shouted over the sound of roaring water. This is where the water exited the hydro plant and returned to the river. We then took the path leading into the dark woods. “I’m sorry, these are somewhat inconvenient to get to, but you have to remember that they were built before cars were a common luxury.” She indicated this warmly and apologetically. I looked at the cabins, two in total. “Which one is yours?” I asked. “No, I don’t actually live here, I’m afraid. I prefer to live in town and generally my role is administrative as opposed to operations so other than a few brief visits, you will probably rarely see me around. Feel free to pick whichever cabin you like, we have no other current occupants.” Mrs. Wedgewood gestured to the cabins. After much deliberation, I chose door number two. Mrs. Wedgewood opened the door and to my utter awe I could not contain myself. “Well fry me up and call me dinner, this is something else.” Mrs. Wedgewood quickly apologized, “I know they really are not in the best condition, but you don’t have to live here if you really don’t want. You can rent or buy in town.” “No” I replied “This is perfectly sufficient, thank you.“ The cabin was only a single room with two widows, just big enough for a bathroom with a tub, a small single bed, and an old yellow armchair with pictures of wheat and a tractor. There was a fridge, oven, and small kitchen table that looked remarkably like a picnic bench. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that no only did I have no hope of renting another place, this was better than I had imagined. As she departed into the evening dusk with my promise to absolutely call her if anything happens, I settled into the cabin, I couldn’t help but rummage through some of the cabinets. “Hey Stan, look I found some cans! Looks like we are eating good tonight!” I said excitedly. Stan did not return my enthusiasm, but that is probably because he is an asshole. Oh, Shit! I never did find out exactly what happens if I try and break contract. Well, maybe next time, this is Kate, logging off.

I started renting this house a few weeks ago. It was a nice 2 bedroom bathroom house with a 2 car garage and a sizable driveway. The grass was in very good health and the wooden fence was always painted a very bright and clean shade of white every few weeks. It was like a house from the 50s because it was. There was something charming about it, the wooden paneling, the porch with the backyard deck, the grill, the cozy little shack out back full of tools, and the lawnmower. I was allowed to rent this out for as long as I needed so I could write a report about a murder. One that happened in this very house in fact. All those years ago a couple lived here, they were crazy about each other. And some of the neighbors as well. For over 2 decades they poisoned, stabbed, and shot various other families. It was never clear why they did it or what motives they had.
In the very end, it was chalked up as pure insanity, a pair of psychopaths married together. They had a son and daughter, but the grandparents had taken them out of that household after finding out about the first murder, they kept quiet. This house has been turned into a sort of museum and rental space over the past few years. It was closed off to the public for over 3 decades but recently opened back up for people to look at. Turns out that renting out and giving tours of a haunted house was profitable.
Oh, I forgot to mention that it was haunted by the souls of the couple who killed those families back in the day. This was something I was having a hard time documenting in the report I was writing. I mean, come on, a haunted house? What the hell is this, a horror novel? I was dead wrong about it though. It all started one night when this one song started playing on a phonograph in the living room. It was Put Your Head On My Shoulder by Paul Anka. I can't get it out of my head. It played over and over every night.
The nights would go the same way over and over. I would go to bed at around 10 PM. After that, the house would fall into an odd silence. The lights came on in the living room and that song would start playing itself. The movement of footsteps could be heard as they creaked against the hardwood floors.
"Please, come out and join us. It's quite a fine night.", a female voice would call out.
"Come now, be our guest, and take a seat out here. We'll drink tea and listen to the radio.", a male voice would soon follow up with the woman's voice.
It was not safe to get up and check it out, despite their words of assurance. Doing so could bring unknown results. It may have been safe, but something in my body told me otherwise. I would stay in bed until 6 AM, that's the time everything would fade away and turn to normal. Their little dance and music would go on all night, but I would still be able to sleep. While dozing off it seems like the music would go silent despite still playing. I guess their only goal at first is to draw you out.
It's been a few days of this before things took a step up. I've been hearing...people? It's almost like a party happened during the night hours. Again I find that I cease to hear it once I fall asleep. I guess these little events are mere attempts at giving incentives for me to leave the room rather than to torture me. Although every so often there'll be a knock on the door asking me to come out. It only lasts a second before the person walks away. They're very polite about it though and they don't stick around, merely ask me and then vanish once they don't hear an answer in 5 seconds.
During the daytime, I've been logging this information into my reports. I feel like I'm going insane slightly, these can't be real, right? I must be breathing some sort of hallucinogenic gas being pumped in here. Got the vents checked out, nothing wrong with them. They did need to be cleaned though so at least I had an excuse to get them worked on without looking like a crazy person. I never find a trace of this couple during the day. No shoes, footprints, altered objects, nothing. Not a single thing moved out of place or touched. Hell, things seem slightly cleaner in the morning. It may be the fact that I try to keep things as they are though.
I spend my days walking around the neighborhood. The people living around here are mostly millennials. The ones who either inherited these houses and chose to rent them out or live in them instead of selling them. Or renting them to cut down certain parts of the mortgage. I drive into the city and head to a coffee shop I like for a few hours. I leech off the free wifi so I can get my things done. There's free wifi at the house, but it's a gamble on the speeds and connection. I also like starting my day off with coffee and going about my hours getting cake and a few sandwiches.
It's now week 3 and I'm almost done. I was given 4 weeks before the deadline to make a report on this house so the people I work for can get some info. They're not exactly well informed since most of the people have either died, "killed themselves", or simply walked out after a few days. The only reason I've survived this long is that I read every last bit of data I could from both historical records and the half-assed papers people put together before throwing their badges to the side and working for another newspaper. I'm barely getting anything interesting so far aside from the fever dream of a stay I'm getting from this place.
These days during the third week have been weird. I wake up at the same time only to hear humming. Musical humming, no particular song, just random notes. This is the wife humming while making some sort of breakfast. Her name is Rose, and her husband is Clark. Can't believe I've been referring to them as the husband and the wife all this time. It changes during these days but it ranges from bacon and eggs to cereal and orange juice with toast to a full pancake breakfast. They got bigger and bigger every day. On day one I stayed in my room until the humming stopped. Only lasted for about 15-20 minutes. After that, I would check the kitchen to find a freshly cooked breakfast. Rose wasn't anywhere in sight though.
I was hesitant to eat it at first since I wasn't sure what would happen. But I was hungry that morning and didn't feel like making the drive to the city so early in the morning. The food was good and I didn't feel poisoned or anything. I would set the dishes in the sink and take a shower. Not even 15 minutes later after getting out of the shower and getting dressed, the dishes were washed, dry, and sitting in the cupboards. I'm honestly not sure why people have been dying or quitting this trip. So far I've stayed out of their way and never really messed with anything. I feel like a guest here and act as one which is probably the key here. You can't live here, merely stay for a certain amount of time. I don't know how long that time frame is though.
Week 4, these last 7 days are my final chances to wrap this up before the deadline. I am nowhere closer to finding out how these past journalists died, why this couple did what they did, or anything like that. The best I'm going to do is probably pump out a short guide on how not to die here. This week was the hardest. The haunting extends all day. You see, the morning would start off as normal like last week. Waking up, hearing the humming, waiting for it to stop, eating breakfast, putting the dishes in the sink, etc. The real difference is that they are now visible and active all day and night.
Clark spends his day sitting on an armchair reading a newspaper, funny detail is that the date of the newspaper follows our date, Only the month and day, not the year. He is always dressed in a white dress shirt with the top button left undone. Simple ironed black dress pants with a leather belt neatly wrapped around them. Brown leather shoes, more like loafers actually. The kind of dress shoes you slip on. They were always shined and clean. His right leg is on the floor with his left leg stretched over his right. The newspaper covered his face. The only thing that could be seen from the other side was the occasional cigarette smoke puffing up.
The cigarette never had a scent though, phantom tobacco, funny. Rose would be sitting on the couch most of the time either knitting, reading a magazine, or watching the TV. It was a large black and white tv, the outside made of hardwood, the thick glass of the display, and the antenna sticking out of the top. Can't miss those two large dials on it. There was always something different on TV, one moment it was a cooking show, the news, and even a Western movie. The volume was always able to be heard but sort of faint as well. Kind of like a sort of background noise you barely notice after a while.
It was not a good idea to verbally or physically interact with them in any way. Not even looking at them was an option. I've never seen either of their face outside of photos because I'm always staring at my phone, or laptop, even intentionally staring at the floor. The carpet was very pleasant to look at. They never spoke during the day. Rose would sometimes clean the house. Sometimes dusting, vacuuming, and even washing the dishes. I lied, I've caught small glimpses of their faces from reflections. They are in their young age from the 60s, the prime of their life right before the major kill streak.
I can't even explain any of this. This house could slowly be turning into a self-contained instance of time. But that wouldn't make sense since the wifi here works, my money is up to date, and my tech can be charged. A few of the outlets were swapped out for more modern ones. Only the ones not already connected to appliances or the TV itself. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner would always appear on the table at different times of the day. Breakfast at 6 AM, lunch at noon, and dinner at 6 PM. I would always eat in silence and put the dishes in the sink. I've tried rinsing the dishes before at least but the water never touched them. I don't know how to explain it, but I would turn on the water and it would just phase through the dishware. I gave up after one day.
Well, this is the final day. I'll be scheduling this report to send itself in a few hours. I don't even want to manually do it since I'm rinsing my hands off this worthless paperwork once I leave. There was one thing I wanted to check out though. I'm going to continue this bit on my phone.
I always wanted to check out the basement. I forgot that it even existed this whole time. The door wasn't blocked or locked at all luckily. The door opened just fine, but the lightbulb turned on for about a second before blowing out. It didn't actually explode, but the light sort of just flashed and burned out like a flashbang. The steps are quite loud as they creak. I'm not sure what this smell is, it's like a mixture of gas and...rotten meat?
The door just closed itself, the only light I have down here is from my phone flashlight. There's some kind of red puddle leading to a room down here. I'm not liking it. I'm writing this live so my boss can read this. Yes, I know, hard to believe I'm actually being productive.
This...this is blood. There's a body in here. No wait, multiple bodies down here. I can see dozens or even hundreds of flies just covering these bodies. I think I recognize some of the badges around the necks. All of these bodies smell fresh. Is time frozen down here or something?
...shit. There are footsteps coming down here. I'm squeezed behind a broken-down fridge, perhaps Clark will just give up his search in a few minutes. My 911 alert just failed. This one message will probably be the last thing that'll automatically upload. I think I just made a horrible mistake. I wasn't supposed to come down here. If you're reading this, please call for hel---

I recently got to rent out a home from the 60s. This house is famous because of a couple that used to live here from the 60s to the 80s. They were known for killing people and families during this time period before finally being caught by the police. These were the things I've learned during my stay in this house:
- During the first week there will be dancing. From 10 PM to 6 AM there will be activity in the living room. The couple will appear out there and dance to a song called Put Your Head On My Shoulder along with a few others.
- They will assure you that it's fine to come out and join them. Don't do it. I've never attempted so I don't know if anything happens, but trust your gut.
- During week 2 they will start hosting a "party". The sound of many people will come from the living room as if people have come over for the evening. Every few hours the door will knock as someone on the other end will invite you to join everyone.
- During week 3 the haunting will break into the day. During the morning the wife will be in the kitchen making breakfast, do not leave your room until she is done. You can use the bathroom, just don't look or enter the kitchen. You will hear her humming for about 20 minutes. Once it stops, you can go about your day. The food is perfectly fine to eat and is actually encouraged. Make sure you put your dishes in the sink.
- During week 4, if you've survived this long, they will roam the house 24/7. Do not make eye contact with either of them. They'll mainly stay in the living room. The husband sitting on the armchair reading a newspaper and the wife reading a magazine or knitting. Occasionally she'll clean the house. If you are going to be in the living room, keep your eyes low and do not verbally interact with them.
- If you do...I'm not sure. There have been reports of them killing people during this time. Acting hostile at them or trying to kill them will not end well. Many have rented this place out and almost all of them have died. Some were filled with stab wounds, some were in the tub, drowned, and others were framed as if it were suicide. You may wonder why the government hasn't merely torn the house down. I'm not sure. It seems like the money they make from this place keeps it running longer.
- They will not force themselves into the room during the night. Unless you interact with them, they will not attack or come your way. Any food or snacks prepared is fully safe and encouraged to consume. Make sure you set dishes and silverware in the sink. They'll be cleaned when you're not working. Staying outside of the house is your best chance to live. Follow these rules.

2023.06.04 07:33 Friendly_Quantity770 Step mom called cps on me to "kick my but in gear"

So this will be a long one and I apologize for that. A year ago my step mom called CDP (child protective services) on me. And now my dad is gaslighting me to force me to apologize for her doing it.
Here is a little back story to understand how this got so bad. I met my fiance (m29) 5 years ago, we got pregnant 6 months after we met. It was not on purpose, and I admit we weren't careful because I was told at 19 I'd never be able to have kids due to some medical issues.
Now I moved in with my fiance after we had the baby (f), and I was a SAHM I worked Uber and Doordarsh and instacart while I was a SAHM. My fiance let's call him J, worked full time at a box store.
Fast forward to Dec 2021, J had quite his job and we were both driving for DD and Uber eats not really making much at all, and my step mom and dad kept telling me that I needed to do better. I already was trying to do better and was secretly looking for a job. I say secretly because then I knew they would say something along the lines of good your finally listening to us. And I did not need that. So in Dec my step mom had a party. We had talked and agreed I'd let them take my daughter until the day of the party. When my dad came to get my daughter she was in the bath because she had woken up from her nap completely drenched in pee since her diaper leaked. I told him it'll be a couple minutes and then she would be ready, I went to check on her. When I came back he was in her room and I saw his phone was in photo mode. I saw red! I berated him about taking photos of my home and how disrespectful it was. He at first tried to deny it but when I pushed the issue he finally admitted he was doing it at my Step mom's orders.
I was so upset. I told him to delete the photos and he told me if he didn't bring them he would get into trouble with my step mom. I said if I ever catch you taking photos of my home secretly again we would have a different convo. I did end up letting him take H (daughter) because I didn't want her to not have fun. I had told myself I would just talk to my step mom at the party and tell her that is a boundary that was crossed.
The party came and as I was just enjoying it everyone in my family was really heavily telling me I needed to spend the night, and I kept saying no because I had planned to work the next day and knew I'd stay and never work. I finally cornered my step mom and asked her to talk with me. She was refusing originally but I was persistent. I told her how bad it looked she was taking pictures of my home and she said "if I wanted to call CPS on you I wouldn't need pictures " 🚩number 2. I then told her it was a boundary for me for her to secretly take photos and have me feel like a poor parent because my home was messy. Her response to this was "honestly, I'm tempted to take H until you get your shit together."
I was dumb founded! I took my daughter and left. For three weeks I did not talk to them. After a week I let H face time them but I was not in the video chat and I would not say anything if very minimal. During those three weeks I worked no stop on the delivery apps and didn't really get any rest I was working mon-sun from 6am to 7 pm just to get gas and food money. I did hear back from a few jobs and had several job interviews lined up. By week three my dad and step mom asked me to come up and I felt I could handle it finally and said I'd come that Sunday. Well that Saturday I had a babys shower and my mom was teaching me how to cook turkey. I still worked in the am and was a little late to the shower. Mom and I had a blast at cooking turkey and the next day I woke up late. H didn't and by the time I woke up we had an hour before her nap. And if I'm honest I still didn't want to see my family. So I laid her down and fell back asleep untill about 3pm. I woke up in a panic because I knew I was in deep shit with my step mom. I rushed to get my kid and our stuff into my car and try to get up there as alfast as I could ( the drive was an hr from my moms 2 1/2 from my home) and as I was pulling out of my.moms street I got a text
" don't bother coming up because I wanted to spend the whole day with H not a few hrs." But I went anyways and the whole time my step mom tried to ignore me. She kept saying how she wanted H to stay the weekend and just have some time alone with her. Side note me and my husband both agreed by then our daughter would not be going to spend the night by herself for a very long time because I had reason my step mom was going to try and take her or try ro stop me from taking her back.
I kept saying.how I'd love to join them so I could reconnect with the family. My step mom did not sound happy with my suggestion. Well around 9 I finally said we had to leave because I needed to drive the 2 and a half hours back home. We said our good byes and headed out About 20 minutes into the drive I called my mom to see if I could spend the night again becaise she was closest, because I was worried with how tired I was I'd get into an accident. She of course agreed and I stayed the night. I stay lied at her house talking how the rest of that day had gone and she was weirded out too. I got to my home about 5 pm and 30 minutes later my MIL come knocking at the basement door in a tizzy because there was a CPS worker at her door. My heart stopped. My husband and I went up greeted the worker and let her in. She said that she was there because there had been a complaint against us. I knew right away who. And asked her if it was my step mom. She said she couldn't disclose that because her job was to keep the peace. Well she came to see the home and inspect it. After she asked questions and looked around. She stated that other then a few things around the house needed to be fixed (easy fixes too) she didn't see a reason for the call. She said the complaint was there was cat pee smell everywhere and it was bad. She said she knew we had two cats but couldn't smell them... that was kinda prideful for me. She said to clean the home and fix the few things physically. she would came back for a follow up in two weeks (it was early 3 months by the time she came back) she told me that she felt that she'd be able to close our case relatively easy. We bid her goodbye. And the first call was to my mom screaming and crying on how I didn't have a dad and that my step monster had really overstepped. I told her everything she was seething! So was my husband and MIL. I was in Shock and tears, I blocked my SM and called my dad crying and upset on what he just let happen and I got nothing back. Then I told my mom he didn't puck up she called him a cowered. She then took a call to him and cussed him out. I blocked him then unblocked him. And it wasn't until three days later he called me back i didnt answer. He said he didn't know I had called and that he would try my mom. When I heard that on the voice mail I took a little pleasure because he did not know what he was in for. J had to hold me because I had started to shake after hearing my dad's voice. I called my mom told her he would call and to call me when she was done. She did told me she cussed him out and told him how he has abandoned me yet again and how much of a shifty father he was to not protect me or to warn me what was transpireing from his wife. He defended himself and said he had no knowledge my mom didn't let him get away with that. And he admitted to knowing somthing but sisnt think she would go through with it.
I ignored his calls for two weeks. He called everyday. Which is sad to say he never did that before he would call maybe every other week. Then I got a message from my SM. " A it's obvious you don't see me as a mother but if you don't let your dad see H I will blast you on FB and put all the evidence out there. Becaise obviously I'm not your mother it hurts your dad that you rnt talking to him. I am a grown women who makes her own decisions and i called csp with out your fathers knowlage. (She mentions that obviously I don't see her as a mom again even though prior I did call her mom.)" I screen shotted the message and sent it to my dad and said this has to stop I will talk when I'm ready. About a week later I finally picked up my dad's call and I had him on speaker. I told him I felt I had no father and how he abandoned me. How he didn't tell em what was happening. And so much more. But after that I started to forgive him because being mad is more work. Plus he isn't soly responsible. Now I see h8me on and off. But recently he has been gaslighting me when he brings the whole situation up. Saying things like
It's just hard on me because I want my whole family back. And how SM didn't really call out of spite but to get you to do what she felt was right (Like getting a 9 to 5 job) I had told him through the first meet up that I had a job lined up and was working hard on the house now that I had cps coming any time. And that I couldn't work while we were cleaning because we were cleaning all day everyday. And how my mom had to spend 2000 dollars just to help us get what we needed to organize which I knew was the key all along to our mess, and have been telling them all that. He praised me for the job and cleaning and I told him I didn't need his validation and I didn't do the job because of cps I had started looking before them. He asked why I didn't say anything because it would have had SM calm down and probably not call CPS. (Highly doubt it) I told him becaise it's my life and I'm going to live it the way I see fit not him and definitely not my SM.
But anyway like I said now he just gas lights me to day I have to make the first move becaise she say TT when I was mad calling her a narcissistic abuser and she saw it and hurt her feelings and how she was not afraid she had hurt all of us.... <<(. So am I the asshole for the TT and should I apologize for everything and speak first or what should I do now? I will say I wrote a note to her that I haven't sent expressing my feelings and what I needed to say. Thank you for any advice plus for reading this long story! Also sorry for bad Grammer and bad spelling lol. I'm typing this while I'm tired also in the first 30 minutes of my birthday.

2023.06.04 07:18 Public_West8947 Straight talk, ACP, and Safelink attempted to hack a Cybersecurity Specialist Apprentice (there will be opinions);

This is the report I created and wont edit it because I want everyone to get the full picture,
I asked myself if it was unethical to doxx his handset credentials but honestly im pissed and if he does it again, everyone will know its a scam.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
I wrote a review for consumer affairs and will attach it below to briefly explain the uncomfortable experience I had with my APC information and interaction below my long description of the shady phishy shit that just happened to me with employees of safelink and straight talk.
After I saw the straight talk "personalized" email I received about acp (which I opted out of), I began applying because at the time; I thought you could get a cell phone service discount from acp, and then have discounted internet from lifeline; I was obviously wrong but was elated to see that considering i had covid turned walking pneumonia so the financial impact has hit me pretty hard. Covid three times too, anyways;

although I have always been weary of straight talk but have kept them for so long because they were the lowest cost for service; I enrolled knowing the enrollment process would be quick due to me already being approved through acp.

That took no time, then once I was approved I received an update on my straight talk account that said I was enrolled; but in order to begin receiving the acp discount I would need to call an 800 number and give them my card number.......

I did it because I trusted that the information being displayed to me FROM the straight talk site was not a scam.

I called the number (had an accent), verified my credentials after like 15 minutes of attempting to get through, and the man told me I was already enrolled so I didnt need to give him my payment method as "it was already working". I even read out what the straight talk prompt was displaying to me to him. He said I was fine and good to go. Told me to wait for the next month to reflect the $30 dollar discount. Next month arrives and I see I was charged the full amount. (mind you, when I look back; it does not show this now) I called them again questioning this and reminding them that this could be because the other man didn't listen to the instructions prompt that the straight talk site had previously warned me was requiring me to complete BEFORE it could go into effect.

Same thing happened, he told me I was enrolled and everything was fine; that I would receive a refund for the $30 I was billed for the full amount/it would automatically do this. I said ok but I think something is wrong here so I will call again.

SAME thing happened again but now I was not able to transparently see my purchase history, and order history from the individual device properly due to them changing the site.

And you can only go back three months every time, the search is displaying different receipts from what I had previously seen in the last two months but school was ramping up and mid terms were near so I said ok again I will wait, but if I get charged again I am reporting this and canceling this acp account because I NEVER had this issue with blackfoots' acp benefit, EVER.

So it took me a few months (yesterday) to catch this because it was finals and right before that I had covid turned walking pneumonia. I even fell behind on school work to take care of my health and figured if they were charging me full price this entire time, I would just call back for a refund dating back to January because I had proof of the phone calls and times (but not conversations).

After FINALLY finding what I thought was an overcharge (reversal of 124 dollars that was labeled phone services) yesterday on an account that was NOT the payment method I had confirmed was my primary payment (first phone call I fact checked and asked him if and when I do get charged the 5 dollars; if you're not going to accept my card payment; will it be deducted from my primary payment method then? He said yes), I called them and took me another 15 minutes to get on the phone with them, they said they are not not showing ANY payments from me.

So then I started to freak out because I thought the 124 dollars was back pay from them attempting to overcharge me from a reversal payment of the incorrect payment amount!!!! He told me due to the high call volumes, he instructed me to call back when I was in contact with my bank to figure it out on my end.

I called for this issue and they told me those transactions were not from straighttalk or a phone service provider at all, and it was a completely separate thing.

She also told me that she did not see any payments reflects to them, and I said good because I never requested them or authorized them to take payments out of an account that didn't work.

So I begin to freak out even more,
I call them back thinking that I really didn't pay them since January and had been somehow receiving service for this long.
I called them to get this sorted out asap, and allow me to pay them back an unexpected debt I didn't know I had.

I told them this is outrageous, I have always paid my bills with them on time and have had them for years, after him continuously telling me that they are not reflecting on their end that I made a payment at all since January, I asked them to hold on the line while I prove FROM MY BANK ACCOUNT (another one, the one I authorized originally) that they had overcharged me, and I HAD been making payments... and THATS why I was receiving service all this long.

All of a sudden the call drops in the middle of me telling him i'm signed in and heading back to January to find the overcharge.

HE hangs up on me. NOT ONLY THAT though, I receive a suspicious error I had never seen on my phone at the same time;
due to working in cybersecurity I immediately screenshotted it and attempted to call back.... now furious.... I cannot receive calls or texts and I receive a text that my service has been drained; and I need to refill; at 0.

NOW i'm enraged. Before I could prove I paid, he cut off my service; I was receiving very weird prompts and the error I took a screenshot below gave me a gut feeling.

I looked it up and of course, it claims that its my phone's nearby cellular tower or ITS MY PHONE,
NEVER had that issue before and I was receiving ONLY straight talk texts claiming I needed to refill my service of 35$ The full amount!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

furious that I had been duped like this, I call my mom to use her cell phone and receive another text that I PAID MY SERVICE, and my refill is next month. I was so suspicious that during the time the call dropped, I was signed into my straight talk account and I was watching him attempt to change my address, name, and all account information;
so I immediately deleted my payment method and edited my account info with a pin that signed him out.
WHICH IS WHY HE TURNED OFF MY SERVICE AND DROPPED THE CALL.

My zip code still displays a weird headset number as my account number, and displays my zip code as Florida. NEVER been to Florida.

I call them back and tell my mother that my identity was just stolen,
I deleted my payment method before he could refill my service with it so either he used the old account that would deny the payment;
or he used a credit card on my account that is NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ME. I call them and demand that they tell me what my purchase history reflects on their end because in straight talk, my account doesn't show any transactions, but my phone now works.

The guy was snarky to me and attempted to tell me that everything's fine, my service wasn't deleted, that it was just a dropped call, and that he wanted me to test my phone and give him my credentials to make sure it worked. Mind you, he sends me a verification code FROM straight talk, so I know they BOTH work there. So I allowed him to test it out and he asked me if I wanted to proceed with the refund portion, or contact acp and get my account active for future references.

I said refund because i'm not finished updates my latest payment method to reflect a card that will work,
because he is telling me that I was never billed for a second service amount and my phone was never deactivated. He ALSO tells me that he is only tech support and not billing or acp........................

at this point i'm very uncomfortable and suspicious so I tell him I have finished updating my primary payment method so transfer me to acp.

HE GIVES ME A PHONE NUMBER AND TELLS ME TO CALL IT BECAUSE HE CANT TRANSFER ME OVER LIKE THEY JUST PREVIOUSLY DID, MOMENTS BEFORE. Mind you this is the SAME straight talk phone number I had called previously so this was not another scammer, it was straight talk.

Instead of immediately calling a suspicious phone number I fact check the phone number on google and its the phone number for SAFELINK, not acp or straight talk.

I call and explain the situation, he immediately tells me he needs to transfer me again to escalate it to Safelink tier 2.....

so now its a woman. (also every one of them gave me false names like the man before this woman was named Alexa-us.... he almost caught himself.

The woman answers and immediately asks for my approval number from acp, so I said hold on I have to sign into my acp to get it.

She tells me well I need the last four of your social now.

I told her exactly why I would not give it to her and said let me get the approval code so you can verify my identity a different way.

she scoffs at me and tells me uhmmmm no I cannot help you or give you anything until I have the last four of your social.

I said, the other man and EVERYONE at straight talk sends me a verification code to confirm THEY ARE WHO THEY SAY THEY ARE FIRST, I said I would like this to be done first before I give out this type of credentials to a suspicious number.

She laughs and tells me again, there is nothing I can do until I get the last four of your social, then to be even more rude she pipes up and says; also now I need your birthdate as well, full birthdate please.

I said so you cant send me a verification code first, you don't want my approval acp number then she interrupts me and says she already has everything about me (SOMEHOW BEFORE I GAVE IT TO HER, probably, just simply by my phone number BEING the account username), and she needs my birthdate (to be an ass), social, and full address (then snickers again like i'm psychotic).

So I give her my social and tell her that's all she is getting,
she tells me again there is nothing she can do until she receives ALL THREE.

So I give it to her (and begin recording her for her to clearly hear the record button turn on). She said, "Good news I already found you! So when you receive that verification code let me know", and snickers again.

I attempt to tell her my service may be off so I didn't receive the previous one the tech support guy was waiting for but then it popped up and I gave it to her.

The first thing I ask her, and explain to her that I am going to start off simply with three questions, what does MY purchase history display going back to January, I told her mine it not reflecting correctly and I need to know whether I have owned you a bill since then. I explained to her briefly that I just got told I have not been making my payments since January but my service has been on. (didn't want to give her too much information but assumed she already knew).

I said I NEED to know what payment methods were associated because I fear I was billed again without my knowledge or consent, on an account that SHOULD have blocked the transaction...

I said so my phone will not work and I will get over drafted.

I said, AND I NEED TO KNOW WHAT MY ACTUALLY MONTHLY PAYMENT IS, because on my end; I have been getting billed the FULL amount.

She told me as confusingly as possible that there is a 30 plan for the acp, that excludes five dollars a monthly but you have to go into your account and accept it.

I said, ok so this is the first i'm hearing of this,
I said I have PROOF my original enrollment reflected my bill would only be $5.00 a month. I said and every month I called, I verified that with straight talk and then said everything is fine. Then I explained to her what the guy said about I would be billed the 35$, and then refunded 30.

I asked her if this was all connected?

She paused and nicely explained to me that this is an upgrade to the original acp account that pays 30$ yes, as a credit monthly for your bill. (still confused as shit)

I said so if I do not accept that, which I never have, then I should only be billed 5 dollars a month correct? I said I have not, as far as I can see on my end.

She said correct, but she said the lowest amount is 30 without data and that covers the full 30 we credit to you.

I told her, I USE data, I chose the 35 dollar plan to pay an extra five for gigs because I use mobile data for my job.... I fucking work in IT. (I didn't say that lol) but I said I use it for my job.

she was about to spout off bullshit again (nicely now and sweet.. she's actually really intelligent other than that type of cold hearted attitude like i'm fucking dumb something fishy is not actually going on with her),
I interrupted her and said ok well its good that it sounds like my bill has been covered since January, and I don't owe you anything? Because I was freaking out about an unexpected bill I cant afford, that was over charged, she said yes it covered.

So I asked her, ok spell it out for me I NEED to hear it (on recording), I don't owe you anything, and i've been making monthly payments still since January, but through benefits that acp is covering?

she said yes.........

pause

so I asked her ok those two questions are solved.
I KNOW I was being overcharged, I SAW IT, and CALLED ABOUT IT TWICE previously, and I said and the man on the phone whom had confirmed my payment method with me AGREED I was being billed 35 dollars monthly, AFTER my acp was approved.

But I didn't want to hear her excuse so I said well I can always attempt to confirm that with all my payment methods unless it was being charged from an UNAUTHORIZED and UNKNOWN payment method. (I wish I had the wit to remember those big words but said something more laymen but similar)

I said ok the last question is;
WHAT card or payment method was used for my service now,
I didn't authorize a payment but I received a message that says i'm paid up till July 4th,
and that pretty much my phone works now.

She then explained to me that its working because my acp has been approved, and never went out.... or something similar so me wanting to bash my head against the wall to get questions about VERY SUSPICIOUS interactions occurring answered,

I said well if I don't owe you anything and I will not be billed in the future because the full amount is paid through this benefit then I think i'm good, that's all I need to know. (I wanted to get off the phone so bad to begin looking at EVERY credit card and bank account number I had, to begin reporting this and locating odd transactions.

I NEED TO KNOW HOW MUCH IVE BEEN BILLED, IF I WAS BILLED SUSPICIOUSLY OR THROUGH A SHELL ACCOUNT KIND OF LIKE DATA MINING, I NEED TO KNOW IF MY SERVICE IS CURRENTLY WORKING BECAUSE I, MADE A PAYMENT, OR IF WHAT THEY ARE TELLING ME IS TRUE... SOMETHING IS FISHY HERE AND I WAS SO UNCOMFORTABLE THAT I AM GOING TO REPORT THIS AS IDENTITY THEFT, FOR THE MOST PART MY CREDENTIALS ARE SECURE BUT I GAVE THEM EVERYTHING THEY NEEDED TO KNOW, BECAUSE THEY WORKED FOR THE CORPORATION. I HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS, like was I ever billed? Was I ever billed that 5 dollar amount? Why didn't the fucking first guy tell me what a tier fucking two Safelink 'supposed' employee had to vaguely explain to me? I am done with straight talk,
and honestly I have been suspiciously been getting so many spam calls lately, who knows; maybe since the beginning of January, that I was already going to change my number anyways.

The tech support man kept telling me to look at my bars,
and they have been bouncing around ever since.
I honestly want to chuck this phone that IM CONVINCED they ported into, alongside my fucking straight talk account.

How they collect information is very phishy, They directed me to at least seven people in which I had to give my credentials from my ACP benefits approval form. Having me call at least four separate phone numbers in order to answer THREE questions which should be transparent, AND displayed TO THE CONSUMER about their personal information/transactions. All seven of them had different answers as well as attitudes towards me, none of them gave me their real name. ALL of them asked for the authentication code either first, after social security/address/birthday, in between, or not at all. I didn't feel safe because of it, and after five hours I got my three questions answers.

I will also note that the tech guy kept asking me to look in my mobile data settings for config tabs that did not exist,
and yes he got my IMEI and ICCID

I also attached below proof of the messages from straight talk claim my account fill or whatever they call it was depleted,
and then reinstated

please please investigate if they are stealing phone plans or syphoning one day from one customer, and then one day from another to combine them into a service plan they can sell off as a scam or some evil backhanded thing like this

I even got the impression that they were lead listing my credentials

not to mention my ip kept popping up weird links (mind you I have all the stops, and pop ups disabled)
when I scanned it with a vpn it claims the link was malicious, this was after this insidious debacle
and I NEVER CLICKED A LINK or pressed a button

During this I also told him that my phone had mdm, because I work in cybersecurity; so whatever feature or tab or he was gonna try (to fix).. wouldn't work

2023.06.04 07:18 lego-eggo How to use the Questrade T5/NR1 Summary

How to use the Questrade T5/NR1 Summary
This post is a bit late for this year but the good thing about taxes is that there's always next year. And since I couldn't easily find the answers I was looking hopefully this will be of some help to someone else. I'm not a tax professional so if you are unsure of how to report your taxes accurately you should consult with a professional.
If you're like like me you may have gotten a T5 summary from Questrade that looks something like this...
Questrade T5/NR4 Summary
...which doesn't really look the the government provided T5 format.
This is because your investment income was less than $50 which means Questrade isn't required to prepare a T5 for you. However, it is still your responsibility to report said income accurately.

Screenshot from Canada Revenue website
I used Wealthsimple Tax to file, so this post will be geared to wards that. You'll need to apply the principles to whatever you use to file.
To include a T5 with Wealthsimple Tax you'll need to add it manually by using the search bar...
Wealthsimple Tax search bar
Type in "T5" and select "Investment Income - T5"...
Wealthsimple Tax T5 search
This will add the T5 form to your filing. Note that Wealthsimple Tax does not include all the T5 boxes automatically, you may need to some boxes manually. Here's what the T5 looks like on Wealthsimple Tax...
Wealthsimple Tax T5 example
...the boxes here have no descriptions, they are only numbered. To understand what each box is used for please visit the Canada Revenue website.

To report eligible dividends from Canadian corporations use boxes 24, 25, and 26. On the Questrade T5 summary there will be clearly identified as "Total eligible dividend from Canadian corps"...
Questrade T5 summary of eligible Canadian dividends
This value gets put into box 24...
Wealthsimple Tax T5 eligible Canadian dividends
...if you fill in box 24 then you must also fill in box 25. Box 25 is for the taxable amount of dividends reported in box 24. Use the multiplier provided by the CRA to fill in box 25, since the multiplier may change be sure to check each year. For this filing the multiplier was 138%, therefore...
10.68 x 1.38 = 14.74
Source: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/personal-income/line-12000-taxable-amount-dividends-eligible-other-than-eligible-taxable-canadian-corporations.html
This is the value that you put into box 25...
Wealthsimple Tax T5 eligible taxable amount
Since you'll be reporting Canadian dividends you also qualify for a dividend tax credit. Foreign dividends do not qualify. Similar to the taxable amount, the tax credit is found by applying a multiplier to the taxable amount. Again, refer to the CRA website to find what the current multiplier is. For this filing the multiplier was 15.0198%, therefore...
14.74 x 0.150198 = 2.21
This is the value that you put into box 26...
Wealthsimple Tax T5 dividend tax credit
I also had foreign dividends that needed to be reported, as well as the taxes paid on that income. These amounts are also shown on the Questrade T5 summary...
Questrade T5 summary of foreign income

Questrade T5 summary of foreign tax
It's important to note that Questrade will provide the values in the foreign currency but they must be reported to the CRA in Canadian dollars. If the income was a single payment you can report the exchange rate for that day. If the income was in multiple payments over the course of the year you can use the average exchange rate for the year.
Source: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/personal-income/line-12100-interest-other-investment-income.html
You can get the exchange rates from the Bank of Canada website.
Source: https://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/exchange/annual-average-exchange-rates/
In my case the the foreign income was in US dollars. The average rate for the year was 1.301300, therefore...
13.11 x 1.301300 = 17.06
This is the foreign income value that you put into box 15. On Wealthsimple Tax, box 15 needs to be added manually. After adding box 15 enter the value...
Wealthsimple Tax T5 foreign income in CAD
...and therefore the foreign tax value is...
1.95 x 1.301300 = 2.54
This is the value that you put into box 16...
Wealthsimple Tax T5 foreign tax in CAD
You'll also need to identify the foreign currency and enter the exchange rate used...
Wealthsimple Tax T5 foreign currency
...and that's your T5 completed.
Questrade will also provide the expense incurred to hold an investment. This may come in the form of interest paid and can be claimed.
Source: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/deductions-credits-expenses/line-22100-carrying-charges-interest-expenses.html
Questrade T5 summary of interest paid
On Wealthsimple Tax, similar to the T5, the interest expenses need to be added manually. Again, you do this by adding it from the search bar. Search for "Interest" and select "Carrying Charges & Interest Expenses (Line 22100)"...
Wealthsimple Tax Interest search
Add the values from the Questrade T5 summary as line items...
Weathsimple Tax interest expenses
That's all I've got. If I said anything wrong please correct me. Since tax rules change frequently be sure to consult with a tax professional and the CRA before filing.

2023.06.04 07:14 gobbostonks INVA: Is the Market Missing Something?

INVA is a biopharmaceutical company that raises concerns about being a value trap. Let's analyze its key aspects to form an opinion on its future prospects.
Profitability:
INVA currently boasts strong profitability ratios, surpassing 70% of its peers. With a ROA of 20.62% (compared to the average of 10.70%) and ROE of 41.50% (compared to 20.57%), it demonstrates superior performance. The profit margin stands at an impressive 73.35% versus the industry average of 17.93%. Additionally, the 5-year ROIC is 27.15%, which is commendable.
Growth:
Over the past 7 years, INVA has experienced remarkable revenue growth, soaring from $50 million to $317 million, a six-fold increase. However, there was a decline in revenue from $390 million to $317 million in 2021. Determining whether this is an isolated setback or a sign of diminishing popularity for their key drug is challenging, posing a potential red flag.
Valuation:
Considering valuation metrics, INVA appears reasonably valued. It currently has a price-to-earnings (PE) ratio of 5.75, an EV/EBITDA of 9.42, and a price-to-book (P/B) ratio of 1.54. These ratios fare better than 44% of its peers, suggesting that the stock is not overpriced. However, caution should be exercised when forecasting future free cash flow (FCF) growth due to the volatility and unpredictability typical in the biopharmaceutical industry.
Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Analysis:
A one-year DCF analysis, based on an FCF per share of $1.87 and a discount rate of 15%, yields a fair value of $12.46 per share. This estimate falls $0.70 short of the current market price. Not accounting for cash equivalents due to the company's debt adds complexity to the evaluation. It is important to consider the uncertain future growth of FCF when assessing the stock's potential.
Share Repurchases:
INVA has been actively repurchasing shares, amounting to $470 million over the past 3 years at an average price of $13.17 per share. This buyback program has reduced the number of outstanding shares to the lowest level in the company's history. Despite the increased FCF and earnings, the stock continues to trade at its 2018 levels, which raises questions about market perception.
Balance Sheet:
INVA's Debt/Equity ratio of 0.79, better than 34% of its peers, indicates a relatively healthy balance sheet. The ratio has declined from 1.20 over the past 5 years. It is worth noting that the company previously had negative book value, but it has since improved. While the debt level is considerable, the Debt/EBITDA ratio of 2.44 and Debt/FCF ratio of 3.44 suggest that the debt burden is manageable, given that earnings do not decline in the future.
Overall Assessment:
Taking all these factors into account, it is challenging to draw a definitive conclusion about the future prospects of INVA. While the company has exhibited exceptional profitability and reasonable valuation, the recent decline in revenue and uncertainty about future FCF growth introduce concerns. The debt level appears sustainable, but it should be monitored closely. The stock market's cautious stance could be attributed to missing puzzle pieces or market dynamics. Further research and analysis are warranted to gain a more comprehensive understanding of INVA's outlook.
Overall what's your opinion? Do you think the company went throught it's best years and it's about to perform sluggishly in the future, or was it all just a bad year? What about the debt level, is it sustainable? The profitability is outer worldy, yet the stock market is punishing the stock, am I missing a piece of the puzzle or is Mr. Market just being himself?

2023.06.04 07:02 Ok_Agency7312 [IIL] echoing, reverbing chiptune guitar, WEWIL?

Hi all, I'm looking for more chiptune/8bit music that features prominent guitar melodies/solos, especially ones with sustained notes and a specific "far away" echoing/reverbing sound
Mega Man 2 - Dr. Wily's Castle (a few mega man songs fit this bill, but this one is my favorite)
Melty Blood - The End of 1000 Years (SMW rom hack remix)

2023.06.04 06:46 RhiaKyrie Clerk with no OIC/PM - Carry mail? Make Schedule? Crisis? Many questions, and a useless union rep.

Hey all, another question- a few really. Buckle up, this one is gonna be big.
So, to clarify some prior posts, I work in a level 18 office in SoCal (not clarifying further for plausible deniability anonymity reasons). Four routes, three PTF clerks (FTF position in arbritration), and a LOT of problems. Those being, we only have two RCA's, one is on medical and fighting labor to even get treatment while the other is 6-days acting regular on an overburdened (~49hweek K route + DACA-5 every week) route.
So, a good few things: I was an RCA before, and thus have the training to run routes. I've done so for our Auxi before, and have not been appropriately paid for the mileage- but am not sure if it's viable for eTravel as it's personal vehicle delivery. At this point, I'm wondering if I'm even allowed to deliver routes, not just express- I've not gotten a straight answer when asking more directly.
My Postmaster is currently out on medical, he had a massive surgery and has been out for a good few months as is. We had an OIC come from, way away, and was doing genuinely fantastic work and fixing things that were long standing issues. Unfortunately, HIS home office practically imploded for something only a month in, his MPOO pulled him back to his district, to my knowledge. As a result- it's just us clerks, and the occasional nearby postmaster coming in for reports we don't have access too. We're doing CSAW, DCV, DMS, things that I'm fairly sure we're good to do, but some other ones- Scheduling, even giving instructions (instructing to pass instruction to carriers or other employees), feels like it's way sketch.
Yesterday we had a full route vacant due to callout- I called eight neighboring offices near and far, but with Saturday being a popular K-Day, there's jack squat available to come and cover. I'm there at like 2:30 AM on another postmaster's suggestion due to having a heavy and unexpected late UPS/Amazon drop yesterday afternoon, and it's enough it'll impact carrier time if trying to do my normal arrival times. (Note: All other clerks are otherwise indisposed on saturdays, I fly a solo ship and was told there MAY be relief later in the day if a nearby clerk in a single HWY route office gets done.) So, crap's hitting the fan, there's a whole route just fusterclucked, another one with a fairly fresh RCA that's gonna get in past 1800 as is. Eventually, I pull a big trigger- I contact District on another Postmaster's reccomendation (unsure why they didn't do it themselves, since I'm a PTF clerk...). I've never seen both my personal phone and hotline blow up so fast. Every postmaster nearby I had contacted is wondering what is going on- mind you most of them were told the details of my MIA route risking full failure to deliver- and others from farther offices immediately offering help later in the afternoon if I'm willing to case the mail (which, at this point to avoid being in a HUGE hot seat I am willing to do.) I'm already catching huge professional but passive flak from my Boss, but he's on medical, frankly should be resting- as well as the fact that he's not even hooked to the office in terms of accountability right now. The long-gone OIC is. I have postmasters telling me I made the right gut call- it was either being on the radar for requesting Aid on a level over what I usually have to (but with my hands otherwise tied), or get in trouble in one of three ways: Go into major OT (14 hr+ knowing my time on that route) and leave a lot of mail undelivered in PO Box, and fail integrity for all the PO box parcels and see if the RCA can help and get us both less overtime with the same PO box issues, or say 'not my problem' and end up on a big red flag list for failure to deliver- with me being the one that made the call to just not deal with it. Rock, meet hard place, meet blast explosives. It's already causing major friction with coworkers who hate being on anyone's radar, let alone district level management- fair enough.
How much of this am I realistically even supposed to be doing? I'm not getting paid OIC/EAS17-18 rates (technically no supervisor position here) rates, I have access to some head clerk tools and such, but by no means any supervisor, timekeeping or leave input, any of that. I just make the schedule, cover a vacant route with other RCA's as I can, and dangit if I don't do it WELL too, this being the first major issue, though one I was dreading to come inevitably given staffing issues.
What doesn't help either is that our steward is very much barely doing anything, and the actual rep is radio silent on myself and other clerks, same for the Rural rep. Glad I didn't join either of those, thank god.
Guess my questions are really: How much of this should I not be touching with a 0.5 mile delivery range pole? What calls am I on the hook for, given that I've only been verbally told what things to do, and that I'm a kinda, a standing scheduler? Was my call way too overboard, or was making sure it got done while doing a proper CYA with the call/communication a good call? Any other input would be, greatly appreciated. I just find myself anxious as hell about what's going on above my head, while still performing these duties.
Semi-related: I've also been informed though, that if I want to be put at a nearby city office to train back end OIC/Sup, I may well be offered it considering what I've been doing came to light in a big way today. Yay? Thank y'all for reading, and thanks ahead for any input. Ask any questions, I'll answer to the best of my ability.
Edit for TL;DR: Doing a LOT of things that I have no clue if I should be/if its above my pay grade, had a major incedent or so it seems, and seeking reflection and advice.

2023.06.04 06:27 Altruistic_Pipe5865 Can I sue my landlord for health and heating bills? She let us freeze.

My landlord didn't properly fix our heat for 2 years. We did not have the option of moving. So, here is the backstory. It was all a nightmare. My partner did thousands of dollars worth of work on the property for the landlord. It was agreed upon that she was going to compensate us fairly for it verbally. This is all before we could even move into the place yet, but after living in a hotel for a year, we were desperate. So, the work gets finished and she hands us a lease stating that she was going to take about $600 off of the rent for the work he did. If we did not sign to it, she said she would just sell the place. Knowing we were desperate, she had us in a corner. Well, we sign the contract and move in. Winter comes and the place is freezing. The hvac isn't working correctly. We are spending upwards of $1000 to heat a 950sqft trailer. And even with spending that much, we are not staying warm. She sends out a company to eventually "fix" it but it still isn't working properly and the place won't hold heat. It is lacking insulation and the windows would just let in gusts of cold air(yes they were closed). We put plastic over them, but it still didn't help much. You could feel the cold coming in from the outlets, and the heat would be on all day, still not keeping the place warm though. We go on for two winters like this. My husband ended up going to the hospital with angina from the cold and stress of the situation. We could not keep up with the bills so we had to go many days with no heat at all because of it. Do we have a case to sue here? We would want to sue for damages. For the physical health damages she caused by not fixing the heat along with damages/costs for the heat. We are in Indiana.

2023.06.04 06:07 Cultural-Climate-311 HealthMaxxing 101: Basic Nutrition

Hi lovelies, I wanted to start a series on basic guides for healthmaxxing topics based on data/science. This is what I am going to focus on and write up some basic guides for people over the coming month. I plan to write some posts on the basics of nutrition; exercise (strength training, cardio and flexibility), skincare, haircare; hygiene; sleep and also other health related guides and will include all easy to read references on the side so you can actually verify things (much easier than journal articles which requires some basic knowledge of stats and metrics). Prior to getting into this, I want to say all of these are my recommendations based on what I've researched and experienced (been doing this for a while and wrote up an extensive data driven guided for myself ages ago which worked for me). I know everyone has individual circumstances/experiences and so want to preface by saying whatever works for you is great but please try and make discussions/comments below value add for others reading with any data/scientific basis if you are suggesting. As a refreshe//I've written previously, my recommendations for your glow up journey starts with
Cycle 1: high reward/low risk cosmetic procedures and development of a basic grooming routine to get some confidence and feel better about yourself (about 3 months) Cycle 2: Healthmaxxing over a prolonged period (6 months - 1 year) to get yourself at the epitome of health that you can maintain for hopefully the rest of your life. Cycle 3: Hardmaxxing. Once you are at the epitome of health + have a fantastic grooming routine, you can start your surgery journey if need be and intelligently make decisions on what you actually need/have the health basis to recover. *** then cycle through again and again as you learn more. Basic Nutrition 101 Healthy Plate: To start with, we want to understand exactly what is a healthy plate and what does it comprise of. A summary of the Harvard School of Public Health Healthy Plate Guide (https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/healthy-eating-plate/)
Grains: According to the Harvard School of Public Health Whole Grains Guide (https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/whole-grains/)
Avoid:
What to have lots of :
SUGGESTION: mix grains with lentils to get some extra protein when having rice dishes (and for a good meal, add some roast vegetables, spices and olives) Protein Key takeaways of some especially healthy protein sources:
Getting into the specifics as based on Harvard Medical School Guide on Protein -https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/how-much-protein-do-you-need-every-day-201506188096#:~:text=For%20one%2C%20don't%20read,legumes%2C%20nuts%2C%20and%20vegetables and Harvard School of Public Health Guide on Protein - https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/protein/
What to avoid:
What to eat lots of:
Suggestion: Eat a variety such as eggs/canned fish breakfast, beans/poultry lunch, salmon/tofu dinner. For cheap easy eats, grain bowls with legumes and tinned fish on toast with picked vegetables is a good go. For my meal plan:
I personally find it difficult to have a new meal for all three meals and don't like to spend so much time cooking and having to come up with creative ways to meet micro goals (it's hard because there are so many). So instead I spent a few hours on cronometer to experiment several basic meals I can have during my day to hit most of my micro goals and give myself room for dinner to choose something healthy that isn't so strict.

2023.06.04 05:53 blee24 Possible explanation for grammar of "two pair" instead of "two pairs" from ChatGPT

Me: I think of two-pair as being an adjective of the type of hand, like "a two-pair hand" shortened to "two pair". Would that explain it, grammatically?
ChatGPT
Yes, you're absolutely correct! The term "two pair" can be seen as a compound adjective describing the hand. In this context, "two pair" is used as an adjective to describe a kind of poker hand, and this can account for its grammatical structure.
When we use compound adjectives (like "two-pair") before a noun (like "hand"), we often hyphenate them, but it's not uncommon for the hyphen to be dropped in everyday speech or even in writing, particularly in established phrases. In this case, the hyphen is often omitted and "two pair" has become the conventional way to describe this kind of hand in poker.
So, saying "a two-pair hand" is grammatically consistent with this explanation, but in most poker contexts, the word "hand" is dropped because it's understood implicitly. So players and dealers just say "two pair". This is an example of how language can evolve and be shaped by specific cultural or community contexts, like the world of poker.
Me: Can you give me any other examples from English where a compound adjective is not turned into a plural, analogous to this?
ChatGPT
Yes, English has a number of compound adjectives where the noun remains in singular form even when it logically refers to more than one. Here are a few examples:
  1. Five-dollar bill: Despite referring to a bill worth five dollars, the word "dollar" stays singular. Similarly, we might say "a twenty-pound note" in the UK.
  2. Four-star hotel: Hotels with a rating of four out of five stars are described as "four-star", not "four-stars".
  3. Two-man team: Even if there are more than one man on the team, we use "man", not "men".
  4. Three-piece suit: A suit with three components is called a "three-piece suit", not a "three-pieces suit".
  5. Six-pack abs: When referring to well-defined abdominal muscles, we say "six-pack", not "six-packs".
In all these examples, the noun remains in its singular form as part of a compound adjective, which is quite analogous to the "two pair" example in poker.

2023.06.04 05:32 FlyingThrowawayHey FAA Medical with ADHD Cost and Timeline 2023

So a couple of months or so ago, I made a post looking for info from people that had recently gone through the process of trying to get a medical with an ADHD diagnosis. One of the mods shot the post down and told me to use the search lol. So I figured I'd make this for anyone else looking for recent, more up-to-date info.
Quick Summary with time and costs-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For those that don't want to read and just want the meat and potatoes: Time from AME exam to issuance of medical- 2 months or 43 business days, which is better than the 60 business days estimation shown in MedXpress. Total cost: HIMS Neuropsych- $1500, HIMS AME- $642 (probably didn't need to spend. More on that later), 1st Class Medical Exam $199. Total- $2,341.
Here's my story------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I scheduled my discovery flight for February '23 and immediately started looking at the other requirements. That's when I noticed ADHD and ADHD meds were a no no for the FAA. After researching around on here and other places, I saw that you could get a special issuance for ADHD as long as you weren't on the meds and could prove you didn't have ADHD. I haven't taken meds in years, so I decided to try to pursue my special issuance. Not to mention, I've had other doctors doubt my ADHD diagnosis and tell me that the way the meds made me feel were a sign I probably didn't have it. I was diagnosed while struggling in college.
Instead of going to a normal AME, I elected to go to a HIMS AME instead. This is absolutely not necessary for ADHD, and I probably could have saved hundreds of dollars by not doing so. Luckily the AME I went to also studied neuropsych or something like that and was able to do a write of up his assessment of me as well. Whether that was part of helping the FAA decide or not, I will never know. I spent an initial $275 for the initial consultation in which he basically just told me he would defer me, the FAA would send me a letter, and I would have to do what they told me to to get my medical. I already knew all of that from research on the internet and here. The 2nd $385 was from him doing his write-up about me to the FAA as well as having to go back and forth with me and my HIMS Neuropsych and read our emails because of the issues we've had. So that chunk may have been necessary, especially since he included the emails between myself and the neuropsych.
After research, I elected to wait on my exam and to not wait for the FAA to send me a packet telling me what I needed to do for my special issuance. I started calling around to HIMS Neuropsychs to find one at a decent price. What I found was most of them were by the book and would not see me until I had my letter from the FAA telling them exactly what they wanted and a copy of my medical record from the FAA. I finally found a couple that were willing to do so and could get me scheduled fairly quickly. Unfortunately, none were within driving distance. So, I scheduled an appointment with one and bought an airplane ticket to go see her.
I'll try to keep this part brief as I have other posts on it, but long story short(ish), I flew to go see the HIMS Neurospsych and took my exam with her. The next day, I emailed asking about my results to see if I needed to schedule an additional appointment to do the full battery. Her first email said everything looked fine, but she would let me know definitely the next day. The next email to me said 'your scores are generally okay. I think you'll be okay, and I don't think it's necessary for you to take the full evaluation'. Little more in there, but those are the important parts. So I'm like sweet. Send it! I told her I had an appointment with my AME at the end of the month and asked if that would be sufficient time for her to finish her report and get it to my AME so we could send it all in together. She told me the date was fine and she should be finished by then. So I checked back in with her a couple of times, just to make sure everything was still on track, and she told me it was. The day before my exam with my AME, I hadn't received anything from her. I emailed her, and received no response. On the day of my exam, I emailed and then called her to see what was going on. After my exam was over with my AME, I got a text from her asked who I was. I told her who I was and that she was supposed to have my report to me on that day. She replied 'Oh. That was today?' She then emails me stating that it would be in my best interest to return and get a full evaluation. Waaaaaait... What?! So I then basically asked how she went from 'everything was fine' to 'more testing' and pointing her to the emails she previously sent. She then gave me more excuses as to why she changed her mind, and I pointed out the discrepancies between what she was saying and what she previously said. I don't think she was a fan of this.
I asked her to call my AME and explain because I wanted his opinion. He told me he thought we should have her write the report as-is and send it to see what the FAA says before paying her an additional $1000 for more testing. So she writes the report and sends me a copy. I feel the report was written in a kind of retaliatory manner. It seemed negative towards me, and was misleading as she described the above events and made it seem like the time from me taking my exam to her 'recommending' additional testing being like a day instead of a month. There was no mention of her originally telling me that I didn't need any additional testing or her telling me everything was fine when checked in with her. There's more, but again, trying not to make this about that or too long. I have other posts on it. I will give her credit though for putting towards the very bottom of the report basically that she didn't think I had ADHD, my evaluation from the ADHD diagnosis didn't suggest that I had it, and I was unlikely to have any aeromedically significant cognitive problems. Then after that, she went right back to more BS. Lol.
So this is where the additional $385 came from with my AME. He talked to her, plus we had conversations talking about the report and talking about what was in the emails. My AME thought I had very good reasoning to be questioning how things just up and randomly changed, and thought we should send the emails in with my medical to add context to her report. So I sent him the emails I had with her, and he read through them and said he thought we should definitely include them as the report without them probably wasn't the greatest for me. In addition, he decided to do a write up of his own with his evaluation of me as well. The $385 was from the time he spent doing this.
Summary of what I did--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I found a HIMS AME for my exam, scheduled a CONSULTATION (not an exam), and explained my intentions. *NOTE* You don't NEED a HIMS AME for your exam. You DO need a HIMS Neuropsych for the evaluation. I found a HIMS Neuropsych that was willing to do the ADHD evaluation without the FAA letter telling me to do so. I went to her with all the documents that the FAA says to provide in the ADHD PDF, with the exception of the FAA medical records as there weren't any because I hadn't had my exam. After my test, I checked with the neuropsych to see if I needed the full battery. Once the neuropsych said she didn't think I did, I started my flight training. I gave the neuropsych time to write the report, then I did my exam with my HIMS AME so the deferred exam and the report could be sent off at the same time. I then just waited patiently for a response. Fortunately that response was a special issuance.
I am NOT recommending you do this. This is just what I did. You do you. AOPA and my AME both recommended I wait and see what the FAA instructed me to do after the deferral before spending money to get testing. Based off of my research from here and some other sites, I find it unlikely that I wouldn't have had to do the neuropsych eval, so I went ahead and got it taken care of.
