Are you looking forward to your next vacation? Whether it's a weekend getaway or a long-awaited trip abroad, traveling can be a stressful experience if you're not prepared. That's why we've compiled a list of 10 travel tips that will help you stay organized, save money, and make the most of your time away. From packing hacks and money-saving tips to insider advice on staying healthy while on the go, these tips are designed to help you get the most out of your next adventure. So sit back, relax, and let's get ready to embark on the stress-free vacation of your dreams!
Plan and research your trip ahead of time
Planning ahead is essential when it comes to traveling stress-free. Start by researching your destination and creating a rough itinerary. Look up the best places to eat, the must-see sights, and the activities you want to do. Once you have a general idea of what you want to do, create a daily schedule that includes time for relaxation and downtime. This will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed and stressed out during your trip.
Another important aspect of planning ahead is booking your travel arrangements early. This includes your flights, accommodations, and any activities or tours you want to do. By booking early, you can often save money on your travel expenses and avoid the stress of last-minute planning. Plus, having everything booked and organized ahead of time will give you peace of mind and allow you to focus on enjoying your trip.
When planning your trip, it's also a good idea to research local customs and traditions. This will help you avoid any cultural faux pas and show respect for the local culture. For example, in some countries, it's considered impolite to wear shoes inside homes or temples. By researching ahead of time, you can avoid accidentally offending locals and make a positive impression during your trip.
Choose the right accommodations
Choosing the right accommodations is crucial to having a stress-free vacation. Consider your options carefully and choose a place that fits your needs and budget. If you're looking for a luxurious experience, consider staying at a resort or hotel with plenty of amenities. If you're on a budget, consider staying at a hostel or Airbnb. These options can be a great way to save money and meet new people during your trip.
When choosing your accommodations, be sure to read reviews from other travelers. This will give you an idea of what to expect and help you avoid any unpleasant surprises. Look for reviews that mention cleanliness, safety, and location. These are all important factors to consider when choosing a place to stay.
Finally, consider the location of your accommodations. If you want to be close to the action, choose a place that's centrally located. If you prefer a quieter experience, choose a place that's away from the hustle and bustle. By choosing the right accommodations, you can ensure a comfortable and stress-free stay.
Pack light and smart
Packing can be one of the most stressful aspects of traveling. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, start by making a packing list. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don't forget anything important. Be sure to pack light and only bring what you need. This will make it easier to navigate airports and public transportation and avoid hefty baggage fees.
When packing, consider using packing cubes or compression bags to save space and keep your belongings organized. Roll your clothes instead of folding them to maximize space in your luggage. And don't forget to pack a small bag for your personal items, such as your passport, wallet, and phone. This will keep your essentials within easy reach and help you avoid the stress of searching through your luggage for important items.
Another packing tip is to pack versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched. This will help you create multiple outfits with fewer pieces of clothing. And be sure to check the weather forecast for your destination before you pack. This will help you avoid packing unnecessary items and ensure that you're prepared for any weather conditions.
Keep important documents and valuables safe
Keeping your important documents and valuables safe is essential to having a stress-free vacation. Start by making copies of your passport, ID, and any other important documents. Keep the copies in a separate location from the originals, such as in your luggage or with a trusted friend or family member. This will ensure that you have a backup in case your documents are lost or stolen.
When traveling, it's also important to keep your valuables safe. Consider investing in a money belt or hidden pouch to keep your cash and credit cards secure. And never leave your valuables unattended in public places, such as beaches or cafes. Keep them locked up in your accommodations or carry them with you at all times.
Finally, consider purchasing travel insurance before your trip. This will provide you with peace of mind and financial protection in case of any unexpected emergencies or accidents.
Stay hydrated and healthy
Staying hydrated and healthy is crucial to having a stress-free vacation. Start by drinking plenty of water throughout your trip. This will help you avoid dehydration and fatigue, especially if you're traveling to a hot or humid destination.
Another important aspect of staying healthy is eating well. Try to eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. And be sure to try the local cuisine, but be mindful of any dietary restrictions or food allergies.
When traveling, it's also important to get enough sleep. This will help you feel rested and energized during your trip. And don't forget to take breaks and rest when needed. This will help you avoid burnout and ensure that you enjoy your trip to the fullest.
Make a budget and stick to it
Making a budget and sticking to it is essential to having a stress-free vacation. Start by creating a rough estimate of your travel expenses, including flights, accommodations, food, and activities. Then, factor in any additional expenses, such as souvenirs or transportation.
Once you have a budget in place, stick to it as closely as possible. Avoid overspending on unnecessary items and look for ways to save money, such as cooking your own meals or using public transportation. And be sure to keep track of your expenses throughout your trip, so you can adjust your budget as needed.
Stay connected with loved ones back home
Staying connected with loved ones back home is important to having a stress-free vacation. Make sure to let your friends and family know where you'll be staying and how to reach you in case of an emergency. And consider using social media or messaging apps to stay in touch and share updates during your trip.
Another important aspect of staying connected is to have a backup plan in case of any unforeseen events. This may include having a trusted friend or family member who can help with any emergencies or unexpected situations.
Embrace local culture and customs
Embracing local culture and customs is a great way to have a stress-free vacation. Take the time to learn about the local customs and traditions, and try to respect them during your trip. This may include learning a few phrases in the local language or trying the local cuisine.
Another great way to embrace local culture is to participate in local activities and events. This may include attending a cultural festival or visiting a historical landmark. By immersing yourself in the local culture, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for your destination and make lasting memories.
Relax and enjoy the journey
Finally, remember to relax and enjoy the journey.
Traveling can be stressful, but it can also be a rewarding and enriching experience. Take the time to appreciate the sights, sounds, and experiences of your destination. And don't forget to take breaks and rest when needed. By staying relaxed and present, you'll be able to enjoy your trip to the fullest.
Conclusion
Traveling can be stressful, but with the right preparation and mindset, it can also be a stress-free and enjoyable experience. By planning ahead, choosing the right accommodations, packing light and smart, keeping important documents and valuables safe, staying hydrated and healthy, making a budget and sticking to it, staying connected with loved ones back home, embracing local culture and customs, and relaxing and enjoying the journey, you can make your next vacation a stress-free and unforgettable experience. So go ahead, book that trip and get ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime!

2023.06.04 08:17 justinwrite2 Criticize my first chapter please!
Totally new to this, would love critique on my first chapter. Give it to me real. I want to improve: this may just be a hobby but I love it!
What you see on Page One.
Read Seekers, until daytime fades to candlelight, For magic is found when ink breathes life to parchment, When bookbindings break and cradled words take flight. It’s the safety of cozying up near the warming hearth, And the rising steam from a wellworn mug It’s that smile when you turn the page in delight.
That cool little quote thing before a chapter starts that gives you background.
West of the Citadel Clouds, Bordering Mountain Pines and fickle Seashine Lies the renowned Port Cardica Where sailors sing and blight-born orphans dream.
Chapter 1
A Slip Away from Death
Like most boys, Jake chose snoring in the pews over memorizing the Church’s proverbs. A clear mistake, he realized, as the Pastor's warning that “prayer follows danger” proved true. Hanging precipitously from the cliff’s edge, Jake recited every Creed he could remember in a futile attempt to appease any watching Gods.
“Prosper in his light, heathentry outside his sight,” he prayed, feet kicking in a desperate search for better footing.
It was a stowaways’ stanza, a tenet meant to share wisdom in ways the thickest of Port Cardica’s orphan dockboys could understand but, like most doctrine, its religious meaning was lost in translation.
Instead, the impoverished boys interpreted it as a practical warning to keep their heads down. Everyone knew the city’s Nobles revered the Book and claimed their prosperity was proof of Gods’ favor. Of course, beggars knew better: one downward glance at them revealed the decay fueling Cardica’s burgeoning wealth. Still, the poor learned to philosophize quietly. Someone was to blame for the hoveltowns, bird droppings, and penetrating seafood stink, and it better not be you.
For his part, Jake blamed himself. If he’d scaled the cliff wall with just a bit more care and a bit less haste he’d never have slipped. Instead he’d been forced to violently slow his descent, bruising bones and trading skin for friction on the vertical slope. It wasn’t a graceful maneuver by any means, but it beat falling hundreds of feet into the freezing current below. Thankfully, years as a guttersnipe had honed his reflexes – his gangly arms lacked the strength of a Swordsquire or the coordination of a Majpupil, but his daily dance with starvation demanded nimble fingers and quick wit.
That experience wasn’t paying off. As Jake shuffled his feet around to find better purchase, his hands slipped on the accruing condensation from the ongoing manastorm. His grip flagged, then failed, and he had neither the magic nor the strength to escape the weight of gravity.
“It isn't written, it isn’t written” Jake recited frantically as he began to plummet. The other dockboys would laugh at his superstition, but he didn’t care. Many claimed the Creeds were lucky, and Jake desperately needed some luck. Instinctively he spread his arms out as wide as possible, hoping to extend his reach and grip onto something.
By some miracle, It worked. The resounding sound of cloth ripping accompanied Jake as he slammed into the stone cliff, teetering to a stop. He hung like a rag doll, held up only by the hem of his matted, brown tunic; the cheap weavings had snagged and torn on an outcropping of stone.
“Aughhh” he mumbled.
He had survived, but everything hurt. Looking down to inspect the damage, Jake saw that his calloused hands were raw and pebbled, but a quick flex confirmed he hadn’t broken any fingerbones. Breathing a sigh of relief, he gasped at the telltale sting every kicked streetrat knew so well.
“Po-Poet’s hand,” Jake swore.
He grabbed the cliff wall to stabilize himself and, seeing as it had worked so far, continued reciting the few Creeds he could remember. A minute passed before he was able to think clearly, but slowly Jake got his breathing under control and continued his self-assessment.
Overall, he felt like things couldn’t have gone much worse. His cracked ribs hurt and continuing the heist would only exacerbate the damage, leading to scarring or permanent hobbling. Jake had seen many dockbeggars with similar injuries from fights or beatings, unable to walk straight without being plagued by the stitchers cough.
For this reason alone, Jake briefly considered giving up. He quickly dismissed the idea – it might be madness to continue climbing in his condition, but he’d come too far to back out now. He’d planned this heist for months, obsessively pathing his break-in while waiting for a night when security would be light. In retrospect, he’d been a fool; his overly cautious preparations left no possibility for a second attempt before his 15th birthday.
No, despite his injury tonight was still his best hope to successfully steal a Scriptors’ Grimoire before Binding Day. Failure would mean enslavement as a Ruddite or worse, full Automation. He’d just have to trust the windy weather to mute his movements and the harvest moons to light his way.
So, teeth chattering with cold and fear, Jake resumed the ascent. His ribs sang in agony as he put one hand in front of the other, slowly turning small divots into handholds, footholds and leverage. Each bouldering movement made him wince, but over the years he’d honed the art of turning sweat and grit into capillary action. He’d had no other choice; richmen shared a passion for building impenetrable estates, forcing thieves to develop an unshaking hand at scaling them.
Five painstaking minutes of climbing later and Jake regained his original position. Salty sweat matted his brow and stinged his eyes but he persevered. He blinked slowly to clear his vision and shuffled his feet left over right, shivering his way across an inch-wide protrusion. Just a few meters above him stood the lip of the granite outcropping and access to the marble fortress built upon it. Jake tasted copper as he bit the inside of his cheek in anticipation – If the heist went well he’d finally change his destiny and be able to swear upon the Sermon’s Book on his own terms.
But first he had to finish the climb. He knew the manor’s sentries rotated hourly, eyes glued to the sky as they watched for flyingmen and attacks from above. He also knew that all these guards would be literate, but none especially gifted. After all, no one powerful enough to be a Writer would stand watch over another man's fortune. The chartered Maji Wordlings, on the other hand, could easily detect Jake if he hadn’t planned for them in advance. He chose tonight because it was the season’s Lenting, meaning the majority of Maji would be in communion until the sun rose.
“What is written” a gruff voice proclaimed, startling Jake.
It was muffled by the wind, so it took him a moment to realize it was coming from directly above him. Jake craned his neck and peered up; to his horror he could see the silhouette of a guard's shadow on the cliff wall.
Petrified, Jake hugged his body to the cold granite, hoping the darkness of the windy night would hide his form. His entire plan hung on the simple thesis that in a world of magidetectors and magflight, no one would expect an unbound to scale the walls. Great in theory, but what if a guard just happened to look down?
“Is Foretold and Forbidden,” another voice chanted, completing the customary greeting. “All safe on the watch?”
“All is safe and silent, as usual,” the first man grunted.
“Don’t sound so upset,” the second laughed. ”We chose this job because it’s easy, remember? No more treading through the mud, no more war with those blasted barren beasts and their infernal warlocks.”
“That’s true, althou..”
The men’s voices were swept up in the wind as they paced further down the stone perimeter. They hadn’t seen him, but, just to be safe, Jake stayed low until he could no longer hear the stamping of metal-toed boots on stone. Then, fingers white and aching in trepidation, he waited another 30 seconds.
Finishing his count, Jake peaked over the edge. It took all the courage he had earned as a thief and every bit of boldness he had learned as a beggar, but he managed it.
The coast was clear.
Jake carefully pulled himself over the ledge before falling into a crouch. He looked around and exhaled painfully, releasing a breath he had not realized he was holding.
In front of him lay an outdoor walkway culminating in a rippling fountain circumscribed by five basalt pillars of progressively increasing height. Everflowing torches adorned each of the columns and burned despite the rain, casting rings of golden light throughout the open atrium. At the foot of the fountain rose a gold-leafed speaker's lectern, a pure white sculpture of the Sermon Book chiseled open upon it.
Jake stared openmouthed at the power radiating from the fountain before abruptly coming to his senses. Without a doubt this artifact was a Magisma, an extremely expensive construct meant to amplify its controller’s magic. Leaving it outside was a casual display of wealth and power meant to shock and impress, but Jake didn’t have time for that.
Instead Jake blended into the shadows cast by the monument as he sneaked his way across the grounds. After passing the walkway the torchlight dimmed considerably, forcing him to hobble his way in the dark. A bright flash startled him, but the acid smell of tobacco that accompanied it indicated the guards he’d seen earlier were smoking to pass the time. Realizing they were distracted, Jake sped up and almost tripped on the jutting crystals of an emerald rock garden. Embarrassed, he paused to listen for anyone approaching.
Everything was quiet except for the constant pitter, patter and hiss of rain from the manastorm. It seemed his home-invasion had so far gone unnoticed, but the hair on Jake’s neck rose. An unsettling feeling of being watched set in and every few seconds he reflexively looked over his shoulder.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, he made it to the Manor wall. Keeping to the shadows, Jake hid behind the tallest thing he could find; a towering yellow flower with leaves the size of platters that he had never seen before. Staying low, he muddied his knees and toes on the damp ground, but thankfully the foliage protected him from the rain. As his eyes adjusted to less light, Jake noticed all sorts of exotic fruits surrounding him; blood red berries in the shape of teardrops levitated inches off the ground, while turquoise bubbles floated up from vibrant greenery, collapsing quickly into little orange stones that looked remarkably like candy. Jake’s belly growled at the idea of tasting these treats, but he dismissed his urges. Stanzas warned that “those who leave riches unread become starving men” but Jake knew hunger well. He would jeopardize his mission by eating something that might make him sick tonight.
Instead, he focused on gaining entry to the manor. Searching his surroundings, Jake located the iron front doors about 6 meters to his right. They were guarded by life-like statues on either side, one a Korai of the Poet, hand outstretched in greeting, the other a two headed wolf, with both snarling maws crying out to the moons. The door itself was blacked with age and inscribed by a massive oval spellwork that glinted in the light cast by a hanging lantern.
Listening closely, Jake groaned at the buzz of silverscripting coming from the insignia. Every thief knew that spellworks grew more powerful over time, and anything audible would be too powerful for any Unbound to lockpick.

2023.06.04 08:07 Comfortable_Study_11 Perdido Street Station is not a good book
A coworker of mine recommended Perdido Street Station recently, and as the name China Mieville had come up related to other books and authors I've read and I was looking for something new, I thought I'd give it a try.
In this post, I'm going to try to organize my thoughts about why I hate this book and why it is objectively bad. Not in my opinion, not according to my tastes or preferences. Objectively bad. In the same way as the Holocaust was an objective tragedy.
- Nonsensical world-building. China Mieville is often credited for building a believable, immersive, vivid or other such positively described world. I didn't believe that Bas Lag was, or could be, a "real" place for a second.
- Let's start with the main races. We have humans, bug-headed people, flying bird-headed people, cactus people, and frog people. All of these seem to fall into the Star Trek alien trope, where the body is basically humanoid, and only the head is different. This is not believable. Further, I never really got a sense that their cultures were so different. The bird people only got developed near the end of the book, and that was just enough to explain Yag's crime to the readers. One interaction with a group of city-dwelling bird people seems transposed from a British crime movie where the gang leader is reasserting authority of the group, in exactly the same way as a human would. I don't get any sense that they are a fully developed species with their own cultures and ways of thinking. Lin, a member of the bug-headed people, comes of as a typical female human character, despite coming from a species that seems to have collectivism built in to their society and their genes. The cactus people are never really explained at all. Like, do they use photosynthesis? Do they eat food? What's their culture? I just kept imagining people walking around cosplaying these different races but all being essentially humans.
- Word and concept choice. At one point, Mieville has a character use the word "capiche." Mind you, Italy does not exist in this world, nor does the Mafia, nor should an Italian American gangster word like "capiche." Similarly, he never says anything about God, Christianity, Judaism, etc, but he borrows the concept of "Hell" and "Hellkin." If there is a hell, there should be a heaven, right? And if heaven and hell exist, there's a god, right? These are simply thrown out there, and never elaborated on again. For money, he uses real world currency names, such as mark, shekel, and Guinea. These have no place in an imaginary world with no connection to our own.
Isaac is a scientist, and while I don't think it is important to get science "right" in a work that is fictional and that is specifically NOT science fiction, the scientific concepts explained here don't make sense. It reminded me more of the characters in Frank Herbert's Destination: Void talking about transistors, circuits, blah-blah matrices, and yadda-yadda amplifiers. The blah-blah matrices and yadda-yadda amplifiers don't exist, and spending so much time on them didn't make any sense in a novel with so little action. Neither does the number of pages that Mieville devotes to explaining unified field theory add to my understanding or enjoyment of the novel. Nothing in the novel really hinges on this, and the fact that Torque seems to throw a wrench in this idea of having a unified field at all makes me more annoyed at spending time trying to understand what Isaac is getting on about. The idea of "crisis" and a "crisis engine" in particular seems like a scientifically illiterate person's interpretation of chaos and complexity theory. 3. "History." The way the "history" is presented here feels very much like it needs those scare quotes. Are these places and events actually relevant to the story? How much thought was put into them and their order? The way that so many are mentioned and then just forgotten really makes me wonder how seriously I should take them.
2.Poor word choices and sentence construction.
- I've never read a book that made me want to take a shower before. When Mieville describes the city of New Crobuzon, he relies heavily on words with negative emotional valance and bodily fluid language. As a small set of examples, the air is almost always described as having a stench, reeking, being rank, putrid, noisome, being polluted, etc. Water is usually described as being fecal, mucal, fetid, rancid, oily, being polluted, etc. Buildings are moldy, desquamating, dirty. Factories don't emit or release smoke: they "retch" smog. Guns don't fire bullets or shoot bullets: they "vomit" bullets. A sack that is full is described as "bloated." A pile of electrical components is for some reason described as "vile." For 712 fucking pages! I don't have a problem with bodily fluids, and I don't mind when other writers describe a slum or paint a picture of a nasty scene. But in Perdido Street Station, there is no let up. I can't remember a single instance of something that was described in positive terms. Even the first time Isaac has sex with Lin, he is described as almost vomiting because her antennae were waving in such a disgusting fashion. And they went on to have a long term romance! Who almost vomits the first time they have sex with someone they love? Why describe it in this negative way? I don't understand the goal of using language in this way.
- Related to the point above, the book is monotonous in how it describes the world. Everything is negative and dirty. For 712 pages.
- Characterization is done in the typical spoon-fed fashion that seems to be popular in many genres of fiction nowadays. I'm thinking of one example in particular, so here it is.
"Lin and Isaac snatched furtive nights together when they could. Isaac could tell that all was not well with her. Once, he sat her down and demanded that she tell him what was troubling her, why she had not entered the Shintacost Prize this year (something which had given her usual bitchery about the standard of the shortlist an added bitterness), what she was working on, and where. There was no sign of any artistic debris at all in any of her rooms. Lin had stroked his arm, clearly grateful for his concern. But she would tell him nothing. She said she was working on a piece of which she was tentatively very proud. She had found a space that she could not and did not want to talk about, in which she was producing a large piece that he mustn’t ask her about. It was not as if she had disappeared from the world. Once a fortnight, perhaps, she was back in one of the Salacus Fields bars, laughing with her friends, if with a little less vigour than she had two months ago.
She teased Isaac about his anger at Lucky Gazid, who had vanished, with suspiciously good timing. Isaac had told Lin about his inadvertent sampling of dreamshit, and had raged around looking to punish Gazid. Isaac had described the extraordinary grub which seemed to thrive on the drug. Lin had not seen the creature, had not been back to Brock Marsh since that forlorn day the previous month, but even allowing for a degree of exaggeration on Isaac’s part, the creature sounded extraordinary. Lin thought fondly of Isaac as she adeptly changed the subject. She asked him what nourishment he thought the caterpillar might gain from its peculiar food, and sat back as his face expanded with fascination and he would tell her enthusiastically that he did not know, but that these were a few of his ideas. She would ask him to try to explain to her about crisis energy, and whether he thought it would help Yagharek to fly, and he would talk animatedly, drawing her diagrams on slips of paper.
It was easy to work on him. Lin felt, sometimes, that Isaac knew he was being manipulated, that he felt guilty about the ease with which his worries for her were transformed. She sensed gratitude in his lurching changes of subject, along with contrition. He knew it was his role to be worried for her, given her melancholy, and he was, he truly was, but it was an effort, a duty, when most of his mind was crammed with crisis and grub food. She gave him permission not to worry, and he accepted it with thanks. Lin wanted to displace Isaac’s concerns for her, for a time. She could not afford for him to be curious. The more he knew, the more she was in danger. She did not know what powers her employer might possess: she doubted he was capable of telepathy, but she was risking nothing. She wanted to finish her piece, to take the money and to get away from Bonetown."
Let me remind you, this book is 712 pages long. He takes approximately two pages, from 208-209 in the Kindle edition, to detail all this information about the relationship between Isaac and Lin. This is just bad writing. Some of this could have been handled in short dialogues embedded in other scenes, and some of it should be left to the reader to piece together. This is an example of what Steven Erikson described as pablum in his post a few years ago about effective characterization.
- Overly descriptive language.
The great cable slipped in spurts into the water by the riverwall. It plunged absolutely precipitately into the darkness, hitting the surface at 90 degrees."
(Perdido Street Station, p. 603)
Why, the fuck, does he describe the cable going into the water in such a redundant and repetitive way? This is not some pivotal event in the story. It is related to an important plan, but there is no need for the drama around this singular event. If I spent this many words talking about a character picking up a pencil, I had better have a real good reason for doing so. Mieville does this all the time. The above mentioned meetings with the Hellkin are another prime example. He spends pages describing the procedures for meeting them and the actual meeting, they add nothing to the story, AND they make his world seem poorly thought out. What did he gain by describing them? Hell if I know!
- Plot Structure and Pacing
- Stupid plot events. Mieville goes out of his way to show that the evil soul-eating moths are not damaged very much by regular physical attacks. And then, the first moth is killed by unceremoniously dropping a heavy weight on it, like something out of a Wile E. Coyote skit. Three of the remaining moths are killed using more appropriate means, but... Look, I know there were the infamous Milner experiments on rats where they'd press a button to get something like an orgasm, and once they could do this, they'd basically just press the button until they died. I don't know of any actual living organisms that will, for example, eat food so much that they physically explode, ignoring Monty Python sketches to the contrary. It's funny, but it doesn't seem like a realistic way to take out soul-eating creatures.
Another example is Jack Half-a-Prayer. He is mentioned maybe twice in the book, very obliquely, before suddenly near the climax he shows up and just starts helping the main characters out in the middle of a fire fight. If he had been foreshadowed more, if there were some stronger motivation than just "Oh my main characters are in a pinch! I know! I'll have so-and-so come!" I might have accepted this, but not the way it is done in the book.
- Pacing. This book overstays its welcome. Mieville creates too many new ideas and just throws them out without exploring their implications, and moves on to the next, and the next, and the next. (Sinistrals and Dextrals, I'm looking at you! Does anyone even remember this from the book?) Then he spends 10 pages describing the fucking Hellkin, or 20 pages revealing that one of characters was a government spy. Or the passage above where he tries to do a novelized version of a relationship montage to show the development of Lin and Isaac's relationship over time. It is too scattered and too focused on the stupidest things at the same time. Why do we need a multi-page graphically detailed moth orgy? In a 712 page book that already has too many adjectives and adverbs? By the 300 page mark, I was regularly having to psych myself into going on to the next page.
- Forgiveness.
One of my favorite fantasy series of all-time, The Malazan Book of the Fallen, takes empathy, compassion, and forgiveness as some of the major themes. I was at first shocked by how often the "evil villain" turned out to be someone with a tortured youth, tragic past, or some other circumstance that explained their behavior. And at the end of many of these tales, that dastardly sinner was taken off to be reformed, or taken under someone's wing to try and make up for the harm they'd caused. Yes, sometimes they were killed or maimed in gruesome fashion, but many had a chance to reform.
In contrast, in Perdido Street Station, it is revealed that Yagharek committed a serious crime among his people, for which he had his wings cut off without anesthesia. Isaac agrees to help him become able to fly anyway, and along the way we see Yagharek risk his life many times to protect this city that disgusts him (as evidenced by the large increase in those bodily fluid words during the Yagharek sections proceeding each part) and to protect his friends. Now, if we could get inside Yagharek's head during these moments, and see that he's thinking "Oh, this had so better be worth it! I really don't give a fuck about these people and I just wanna fly again." That would be one thing. Near the end, it is revealed that Yagharek basically committed the crime of rape (which is framed as second degree choice theft, choice theft being an interesting sounding cultural concept, but which actually makes no sense if you try to work out the implications of how a legal system based on it would work....). Isaac is asked not to build the promised wings for Yagharek, and he ends up abandoning him.
Now, look, I'm not condoning rape. I think it is a horrendous crime. As bad or worse than murder. People do horrible things. Sometimes with intention, sometimes in the heat of the moment. Of course, getting caught in the heat of the moment doesn't excuse the action. One of the problems is that Mieville doesn't reveal much about Yagharek's psychological state afterwards. We don't know, for example, if like Red's character in The Shawshank Redemption, he feels sorry for what he did as a hot-headed, stupid young man, and that every day he regrets what he did. I think a lot hinges on that. If Yagharek is really just looking for a way to void his punishment, Isaac is probably right to refuse him. If Yagharek regrets what he did, and wants to make up for it somehow, and needs something that will make his life worth continuing, Isaac probably should have helped him instead of being a closed-minded judgmental prick.
Given Yagharek's actions throughout the book, Isaac comes off as an asshole, and to the extent that his judgment matches Mieville's, so does Mieville.
- "Political" Themes I see a lot of discussion about how Mieville is very political and how he's a communist / socialist, and wants to take down capitalism, etc, etc. I picked up on a lot of that in PSS, but I think Mieville handles these themes very poorly. As a better example of a deconstruction / take-down of capitalism, I'd again recommend The Malazan Book of the Fallen, specifically Midnight Tides and Reaper's Gale, both of which examine the problem in more creative and deeper ways than Mieville does in PSS.
So that's my hot take on Perdido Street Station. You're free to disagree, but I'm tired of hearing so many demonstrably untrue claims made about the quality of Mieville's writing, in particular his descriptions and his world building as seen in PSS. I know that PSS was his second book, and he might have matured a lot as a writer since then (the same coworker who recommended him said his style doesn't change much in later books, but I can't judge them myself). But 712 pages is more than enough in one lifetime for me.

2023.06.04 07:53 Former-Wrap-7273 How do I move on? Am I the problem?
All JC year I've been reminded that I'm replaceable and unwanted.
Before the end of last year, I got betrayed by someone i thought was gonna be my ride or die. He had confidently said he will support me in a school election where we need to have a partner as he knew I could not find anyone. I trusted implicitedly after questioning him to the point of slight irritation. He then ditched me suddenly for a better position close to voting week. He cited a reason being we're both too hard headed because we argued over sending our images as part of introductory messages to the members during the elections. He didnt want to send picutres, but to me its ridiculous cos i have never seen people running for elections tryung to hide their faces. Even then I seeked for a compromise to send a picture of us together instead of individual ones. After the betrayal, he did not even apologise, but tried to explain how its not the rivals fault (because he was friends with the rival and he thought I believed that the rival tried to set me up, a conclusion that I never came to my mind) and made excuses for himself. It felt like he was protecting thebother friend more than me as he clarified that the rival was not involved instead of just apologising. I was mad that he took away my options for partners by being so confident, then taking them away again by selfishly dropping out when I relied on him the most. He received no backlash throughout as all our mutual friends thought I kicked him out instead (making me the villian). He then tried to find a replacement, but when I contacted the replacement, he was turned down the offer after being on the fence. Essentially, the replacement was just his escape route. This year, he hangs with new friends instead, only coming to me if he has no one with him, while making no effort to regain my trust.
At the start of this year I held a deputy role for someone in an organisation. I was promised an equal partnership so I placed a lot of faith in him, but I soon realised he tends to tank a lot of the work himself. Initially, he joked that we do not work well together, before fully using it as his reason for leaving me out of meetings, discussions and decision making for the rest of the year. The shift started after I made the mistake of giving my opinion the one time he did not ask for it when he did not ask, in a conversation thread where he asked for my opinions twice directly before. I declined to give my opinions after the event to avoid worsening the situation before we talked things out. However, I've been rejected a few times after initiating. Throughout the rest of the year he kept coming up with reasons why I wasnt adequate e.g. "I feel uncomfortable joking with you", "I feel you're too controlling" etc. I kept stepping back after each feedback e.g. stop making jokes, stop giving my opinions, to avoid detoriating the relationship further. However, his image of me did not change. He moved on to more excuses, inviting his significant other to discuss work stuff instead of me, leaving me out of discussions only to update me after, asking me for any suggestions only to then fiercely defending his ideas (basically asking me for suggestions is just for show). Things come to a boiling point when he threatened to leave after I initiated a talk a third time. His reasoning was because I invited the organisation head as the moderator and he felt he would be interrogated by us. After that, he fully discussed work plans with his friends instead of me, suggesting we split projects to avoid discussing altogether, and finally dropping the bombshell which is that he feels uncomfortable discussing with me and only me while he is fine with everyone else. This impacted my self esteemed a little because it felt like i was the problem, although logically I have been making all concessions to him. This also made me unable to function as the department's second in charge, because all projects go to him as the head and I cant do anything without him delegating things to me via discussions. The wording is another issue as it implies sexual harrassment especially in this social climate.
After fully isolating me, he went on to be praised as the organisation's best member, the team cannot live without him etc. It felt like he sacrificed me to make it look lile he contributed the most. It really stung when he got close to my friends after he threatened me and my friends know about the event too. Remember the first guy? Yup, he is now the closest person to him. Can you believe it?
Towards the end of the year I tried to put our differences aside and help my dept organise a birthday party for him in secret while he wanted me to write thank you cards to the dept. As I needed more time since im focused on organising his birthday party, I asked if there are other dates we can give the farewell cards. He just casually suggested we split our gifts even though we are partners on paper. It felt like a slap to the face, especially after a year of implying he wanted his friends instead of me and constantly keeping me out of the loop for projects. I started to wonder why am I doing his bday party.
How do I move on from such people? Am I the problem here?

2023.06.04 07:52 ZoroStarlight Why does the shadow lord want them dead?
The job of the shadow lord is to lead and protect the shades/gestalts so that they can fuse with their replicant one day. But he doesn’t seem to be very good at his job, since he was the one planning NieR to get these fragments to enter his castle. But to get these fragments NieR has to kill strong shades, for what extra cutscenes in the NG+ reveal, are not so evil at all. But why does the shadow lord want them dead? We’re they concurrents or does the shadow lord simply not care about his job? Or is there another reason for the replicant to do his dirty work?

2023.06.04 07:43 Cassandra-Cursed Lost My Fear of Heights
Lately I went to a family reunion to please my mother-in-law. We stayed in a large rental house at a resort. I ran my HEPA filter in my room and the vent in our private bathroom that opened into a shared hall. Then the sister-in-law arrived with her kids who were constantly coughing and are probably not even vaccinated. Their father definitely isn't. In response, I ran a fan in the hall to blow the air away from our doors. Unfortunately, the bathroom window would not open, so I was stuck with the situation and wasn't sure what to do besides hope the fan and vent would help. I masked with my trusty Envo mask anytime I left my room or bathroom and was indoors. On the deck, I unmasked and sat 6' or more away from everyone else.
All seemed well until one night my husband forgot to shut the door to the bathroom. It seems the air became contaminated as the next day I developed the usual burning headache, neurogenic bladder, right leg weakness and stumbling.
Ultimately, I decided to leave a day early, as I experienced a new symptom.
While on the balcony of the rental house, I looked straight down to the ground below, something that, with my lifelong fear of heights, would usually give me quite a bit of fear and anxiety, and nothing happened. No fear whatsoever. It was eerie to say the least. I believe it indicates more brain damage, probably to the amygdala I imagine. It seems ominous, as I'm aware that there may be risk of personality change. It also makes me think about how without fear it may be harder to remember to protect myself and I will have to rely more on habit, ingrained procedures that I established earlier, conscious planning, etc.
Has anyone else noticed such symptoms in themselves and have any information for what I might expect in the future?
Thanks ahead of time and take care of yourselves my fellow long haulers. Remember, it's up to you to decide whether or not making family happy is worth maybe losing another piece of yourself. I'm not so sure myself. Maybe I was too nice to make her dream come true. After all, my MIL refused to come help me when my long covid symptoms were more severe, despite me crying that I was afraid I would die and begging her to come help us for just a week or two. It might be a type of self-harm behavior I suppose, to be too kind this way. What do you think?

2023.06.04 07:36 PervySaiyan Players pulled a fast one on me
So for context I was going to do the whole "Izek sneaking around to try and kidnap Ireena" but while Izek was out patrolling the group met with the burgermeister and requested he keep Ireena and Ismark for the time being and have them work as his maid and butler for now in exchange for room and board (Since the others disappeared). I was just going to play it off as no way get outta here. But my very smart sorcerer mentioned how Ismark is technically quite possibly wealthy since he is the late burgermeister of barovia's son. Which in my mind it made sense for this burgermeister to be like yah ok fine (deciding he can try and doop them out of some money)
Now comes the problem, that means Izek and Ireena are now living under the same roof... I really dislike the base game's "Izek evil cuz he crazy and obsessed" angle and I've been contemplating Izek being stunned and just sticking to her like a lost puppy whenever she wants to go out and walk around town. There would be tension between Izek and Ismark obviously but I feel if he had a chance to explain his state of mind she might be willing to give Izek a chance as long as she doesnt cause trouble for her or Ismark. Now I do plan for it to be a big problem if the party tries to remove Ireena from Vallaki. He'd likely throw a huge tantrum and *then* try to kidnap he demand he go as well to protect he or something like that.
Wondering what people think/would suggest?

2023.06.04 07:33 Friendly_Quantity770 Step mom called cps on me to "kick my but in gear"
So this will be a long one and I apologize for that. A year ago my step mom called CDP (child protective services) on me. And now my dad is gaslighting me to force me to apologize for her doing it.
Here is a little back story to understand how this got so bad. I met my fiance (m29) 5 years ago, we got pregnant 6 months after we met. It was not on purpose, and I admit we weren't careful because I was told at 19 I'd never be able to have kids due to some medical issues.
Now I moved in with my fiance after we had the baby (f), and I was a SAHM I worked Uber and Doordarsh and instacart while I was a SAHM. My fiance let's call him J, worked full time at a box store.
Fast forward to Dec 2021, J had quite his job and we were both driving for DD and Uber eats not really making much at all, and my step mom and dad kept telling me that I needed to do better. I already was trying to do better and was secretly looking for a job. I say secretly because then I knew they would say something along the lines of good your finally listening to us. And I did not need that. So in Dec my step mom had a party. We had talked and agreed I'd let them take my daughter until the day of the party. When my dad came to get my daughter she was in the bath because she had woken up from her nap completely drenched in pee since her diaper leaked. I told him it'll be a couple minutes and then she would be ready, I went to check on her. When I came back he was in her room and I saw his phone was in photo mode. I saw red! I berated him about taking photos of my home and how disrespectful it was. He at first tried to deny it but when I pushed the issue he finally admitted he was doing it at my Step mom's orders.
I was so upset. I told him to delete the photos and he told me if he didn't bring them he would get into trouble with my step mom. I said if I ever catch you taking photos of my home secretly again we would have a different convo. I did end up letting him take H (daughter) because I didn't want her to not have fun. I had told myself I would just talk to my step mom at the party and tell her that is a boundary that was crossed.
The party came and as I was just enjoying it everyone in my family was really heavily telling me I needed to spend the night, and I kept saying no because I had planned to work the next day and knew I'd stay and never work. I finally cornered my step mom and asked her to talk with me. She was refusing originally but I was persistent. I told her how bad it looked she was taking pictures of my home and she said "if I wanted to call CPS on you I wouldn't need pictures " 🚩number 2. I then told her it was a boundary for me for her to secretly take photos and have me feel like a poor parent because my home was messy. Her response to this was "honestly, I'm tempted to take H until you get your shit together."
I was dumb founded! I took my daughter and left. For three weeks I did not talk to them. After a week I let H face time them but I was not in the video chat and I would not say anything if very minimal. During those three weeks I worked no stop on the delivery apps and didn't really get any rest I was working mon-sun from 6am to 7 pm just to get gas and food money. I did hear back from a few jobs and had several job interviews lined up. By week three my dad and step mom asked me to come up and I felt I could handle it finally and said I'd come that Sunday. Well that Saturday I had a babys shower and my mom was teaching me how to cook turkey. I still worked in the am and was a little late to the shower. Mom and I had a blast at cooking turkey and the next day I woke up late. H didn't and by the time I woke up we had an hour before her nap. And if I'm honest I still didn't want to see my family. So I laid her down and fell back asleep untill about 3pm. I woke up in a panic because I knew I was in deep shit with my step mom. I rushed to get my kid and our stuff into my car and try to get up there as alfast as I could ( the drive was an hr from my moms 2 1/2 from my home) and as I was pulling out of my.moms street I got a text
" don't bother coming up because I wanted to spend the whole day with H not a few hrs." But I went anyways and the whole time my step mom tried to ignore me. She kept saying how she wanted H to stay the weekend and just have some time alone with her. Side note me and my husband both agreed by then our daughter would not be going to spend the night by herself for a very long time because I had reason my step mom was going to try and take her or try ro stop me from taking her back.
I kept saying.how I'd love to join them so I could reconnect with the family. My step mom did not sound happy with my suggestion. Well around 9 I finally said we had to leave because I needed to drive the 2 and a half hours back home. We said our good byes and headed out About 20 minutes into the drive I called my mom to see if I could spend the night again becaise she was closest, because I was worried with how tired I was I'd get into an accident. She of course agreed and I stayed the night. I stay lied at her house talking how the rest of that day had gone and she was weirded out too. I got to my home about 5 pm and 30 minutes later my MIL come knocking at the basement door in a tizzy because there was a CPS worker at her door. My heart stopped. My husband and I went up greeted the worker and let her in. She said that she was there because there had been a complaint against us. I knew right away who. And asked her if it was my step mom. She said she couldn't disclose that because her job was to keep the peace. Well she came to see the home and inspect it. After she asked questions and looked around. She stated that other then a few things around the house needed to be fixed (easy fixes too) she didn't see a reason for the call. She said the complaint was there was cat pee smell everywhere and it was bad. She said she knew we had two cats but couldn't smell them... that was kinda prideful for me. She said to clean the home and fix the few things physically. she would came back for a follow up in two weeks (it was early 3 months by the time she came back) she told me that she felt that she'd be able to close our case relatively easy. We bid her goodbye. And the first call was to my mom screaming and crying on how I didn't have a dad and that my step monster had really overstepped. I told her everything she was seething! So was my husband and MIL. I was in Shock and tears, I blocked my SM and called my dad crying and upset on what he just let happen and I got nothing back. Then I told my mom he didn't puck up she called him a cowered. She then took a call to him and cussed him out. I blocked him then unblocked him. And it wasn't until three days later he called me back i didnt answer. He said he didn't know I had called and that he would try my mom. When I heard that on the voice mail I took a little pleasure because he did not know what he was in for. J had to hold me because I had started to shake after hearing my dad's voice. I called my mom told her he would call and to call me when she was done. She did told me she cussed him out and told him how he has abandoned me yet again and how much of a shifty father he was to not protect me or to warn me what was transpireing from his wife. He defended himself and said he had no knowledge my mom didn't let him get away with that. And he admitted to knowing somthing but sisnt think she would go through with it.
I ignored his calls for two weeks. He called everyday. Which is sad to say he never did that before he would call maybe every other week. Then I got a message from my SM. " A it's obvious you don't see me as a mother but if you don't let your dad see H I will blast you on FB and put all the evidence out there. Becaise obviously I'm not your mother it hurts your dad that you rnt talking to him. I am a grown women who makes her own decisions and i called csp with out your fathers knowlage. (She mentions that obviously I don't see her as a mom again even though prior I did call her mom.)" I screen shotted the message and sent it to my dad and said this has to stop I will talk when I'm ready. About a week later I finally picked up my dad's call and I had him on speaker. I told him I felt I had no father and how he abandoned me. How he didn't tell em what was happening. And so much more. But after that I started to forgive him because being mad is more work. Plus he isn't soly responsible. Now I see h8me on and off. But recently he has been gaslighting me when he brings the whole situation up. Saying things like
It's just hard on me because I want my whole family back. And how SM didn't really call out of spite but to get you to do what she felt was right (Like getting a 9 to 5 job) I had told him through the first meet up that I had a job lined up and was working hard on the house now that I had cps coming any time. And that I couldn't work while we were cleaning because we were cleaning all day everyday. And how my mom had to spend 2000 dollars just to help us get what we needed to organize which I knew was the key all along to our mess, and have been telling them all that. He praised me for the job and cleaning and I told him I didn't need his validation and I didn't do the job because of cps I had started looking before them. He asked why I didn't say anything because it would have had SM calm down and probably not call CPS. (Highly doubt it) I told him becaise it's my life and I'm going to live it the way I see fit not him and definitely not my SM.
But anyway like I said now he just gas lights me to day I have to make the first move becaise she say TT when I was mad calling her a narcissistic abuser and she saw it and hurt her feelings and how she was not afraid she had hurt all of us.... <<(. So am I the asshole for the TT and should I apologize for everything and speak first or what should I do now? I will say I wrote a note to her that I haven't sent expressing my feelings and what I needed to say. Thank you for any advice plus for reading this long story! Also sorry for bad Grammer and bad spelling lol. I'm typing this while I'm tired also in the first 30 minutes of my birthday.

I know that nesting is apart of the planned features of Path of titans, but I spent an hour thinking in bed about how the mechanics will work, so I decided to write this for others to look at. :) Let me know what you think of it, if you think its balanced or not.
The Mating Process
The mating process will require a male and female of the same species. Two different species cannot mate. Get close to a partner, and send a mating request. It will pop up like a group invite - "Player is requesting to mate!"
Accepting the mating invite while within close range to the player will begin the family friendly mating animation, and will last 5-10 seconds. If attacked by an enemy during the mating animation, it will be interrupted and another mating invite will have to be sent. It's recommended to mate in a safe area because of this. Players cannot move during the mating animation, so if not done safely, it will be easy for an enemy to get an easy first bite. Look at your surroundings before you begin to ensure you don't get jumped.
Once the mating succeeds, the female receives the "Egg-bound" buff. This buff will stay until the eggs are laid, or until the female dies. A female with the "Egg-bound" buff will receive a quest on the side of the screen, in purple text: "Gather materials for the nest." These include sticks, succulent, lakeweed, lake sponge, etc. Depending on the Dinosaur, a certain amount of nesting materials is needed. For smaller Dinos like Deinonychus, will only need 20 pieces of nesting material, while larger dinosaurs like T-Rex, will need 80 pieces of nesting material. Everybody in the females group receives this quest, and it acts like a group quest, where anybody can help gather nesting materials. If the male wishes to no longer associate with the female after the mating process, he doesn't have to. Leaving the females group (if he was in one) will remove the nesting quest, as well as anyone else who was in the group as well. Only the egg-bound female is required to complete the quest, and cannot get rid of it unless she gets rid of the egg-bound buff.
The Nesting Process
Once all nesting materials have been gathered, the female can now lay her eggs. You will get a quest - "Lay your eggs!" Choose a good place to lay them, because once they are laid, they cannot be moved! Choose a safe spot like a cave, or if you're a flying creature, up very high in order to keep your eggs as safe as possible. Make sure you lay them on a flat surface so your baby's don't fall out of the nest immediately after hatching. Pressing and holding the K key (configurable) will build a nest and lay the eggs underneath the female. (Must be held for at least 3 seconds!) Keeping the eggs warm is not necessary, just staying near them and protecting them is good enough. The eggs will then be marked on your map, so if you happen to die, you can go back and find your nest so long it hasn't been ransacked. The eggs will then gain a timer of 30 minutes (configurable) until they will hatch. You can also manually hatch them if you want. The size of the nest and the eggs differ depending on which dinosaur laid them, and the amount of eggs also varies between dinosaurs. Smaller dinosaurs such as Deinonychus can produce up to 6 Eggs in one nest, while a T-Rex can only produce up to 2. This is for balancing purposes. Once the female lays the eggs, she is able to log off, walk away, and do whatever she pleases. She no longer has obligation to care for the eggs. If she doesn't wish to have anything to do with the nest after its laid, then she is allowed to decide that. Any dinosaur can take care of the eggs if the mother doesn't want to, but the mother is the only one who can manually hatch the nest. Otherwise, the timer needs to expire for the eggs to hatch. It will be very likely the eggs will not make it if the mother lays them and then leaves them, but on the off chance they do hatch, the hatchlings will be on their own. It would be an amazing brag to have hatched from an abandoned nest and survived to sub-adulthood. Maybe that can be a challenge for some!
Mammals
Any mammal dinosaurs (ones that cannot lay eggs) will go through the same process, however the buff they get will be called "Pregnant" and they will not lay eggs, but they will give birth to a small creature bundled in leaves. It will still take 30 minutes for the baby to emerge. Depending on the dinosaur, multiple bundles can be birthed.
Sea creatures
Any sea creatures that can only lay eggs underneath the water, will lay their eggs in the form of Roe instead of eggs. This means that the minimum fish eggs a sea creature can lay will have to be higher then 1. Gathering Nesting materials is not needed! Semi aquatics such as Sarcosuchus will go through the same process as land walkers who lay eggs, and lay their eggs on the surface.
Hatchling Creation
During the 30 minute egg timer, players can join the nest through the Nest tab in the Socials menu. Mothers can invite players, lock nests to friends only, and open nests can be joined by players. It'll basically function like the grouping system but in the form of nests instead. Players can choose how they look upon emerging, or they can allow the game to decide how they look. They will not be able to choose the dinosaur they emerge as however, since that depends on the mother species.
If players choose manual character creation, players will notice that there are 3 new skins are available. These are Hatchling Skins! These skins are acquired by hatching from a players nest, and surviving until Sub-adulthood. Once this is accomplished, the skins are available for purchase with Marks just as normal on that dinosaur species. Once the hatchling has been created, the player then must wait until the nest hatches, or until the mother hatches them manually.
The hatching process
Once at least one player has joined the nest, the player will view the egg from a third person view as if they are playing as the egg, but cannot move. They are able to turn the camera and view the world around them however. The mother has the option to manually hatch the nest, which can be done through the Nesting tab in the socials menu. This means the mother can be as far or as close as she wants, and still allow the eggs to hatch. Another way to hatch is to let the 30 minute timer expire, and any eggs in the nest will hatch automatically. Any eggs that have not been player claimed will simply disappear upon hatching, but the player claimed ones will turn into hatchlings. If none of the eggs in the nest are player claimed, manually hatching the nest or letting the timer expire will simply despawn the eggs. Any players who hatched out of the eggs will have the location of their hatch spot marked on their map until sub-adulthood. This is to help hatchlings who have wandered far away find home again, unless the family decides to move.
Hatchlings cannot be trampled or attacked by family members until sub-adulthood. This is to ensure players don't make nests just to kill the babies.
Living as a hatchling
Living as a players hatchling is much more difficult and can be challenging, mostly because, if you die before sub-adulthood, the hatchling is erased from your played dinosaurs. Starvation, being attacked, thirst, falling from a height, etc. This is because in order to unlock the hatchling skins, you must live from hatchling to sub-adult in one go. Death will erase the character, and you will have to start again anew. However once you hit sub-adulthood, you are free from the games clutches and you forever have that dinosaur as playable no matter if you die or not. Safe logging off the server before sub-adulthood will still allow the dinosaur to be played. Parents, protect your kids! They rely on you to help unlock those skins and survive. If the hatchlings mother logs off, it will be up to the other parents or group members or even siblings to help protect the hatchling. Hatchlings can walk around, do quests, attack and all that stuff just as normal dinosaurs can, but it is heavily recommended for the hatchling to have a body guard until at least the Juvenile or Adolescent stage. If the guardian was the only group member and they log off, it is recommended for the hatchling to stay hidden until they come back, log on as a different dinosaur in the meantime, or find a trustworthy Dinosaur to help protect and raise them, as dying before sub-adulthood will render the hatchling no longer playable. Any Dinosaur, Carnivore or Herbivore can raise a hatchling of any kind. Herbivores must take caution when raising a carnivore however, for obvious reasons. Most realism servers would most likely have a rule against Herbivores raising Carnivores as they do now with roleplaying babies.
Eggs are food too
Any carnivore, including the parents, can eat eggs, player claimed or not. Larger dinosaurs such as Sarcosuchus and Allosaurus can pick them up with their mouth and swallow them much like meat chunks and fish, but smaller dinosaurs and scavengers such as Deinonychus and Thalassodromeus must SWIPE the eggs first! If they can carry them and get away, then they are free to put them on the ground and eat them. They cannot start eating unless they put the egg down on the ground first. Once an egg begins to be eaten, it can no longer hatch. If a carnivore or scavenger picks up the egg and then drops it somewhere outside the nest, the egg can be put back into the nest to continue incubating, so long as the scavenger hasn't taken a bite already. Any Dinosaur can remove and replace eggs from any nest, even if it doesn't belong to them. Eggs can be taken from one nest, and put into a different nest. This means an Allosaurus egg is able to hatch within a Stegosaurus nest, but it must come from an Allosaurus nest. The Allosaurus in question is still tied to their mothers egg timer, so it will not hatch alongside the Stego eggs, and will hatch at the same time as the Allosaurus eggs instead. The only difference is the location they're in, and so long an egg is in a nest of some kind, it is able to hatch. However, the mother or guardian has the ability to cull the egg that does not belong to her nest, or if she doesn't realize the egg doesn't belong to her, cull the baby upon hatching. Mix nesting is not recommended due to this, but can be fun if everyone agrees to be nice!
With Roe, those eggs can hatch where ever they want underwater as they don't need a nest to incubate. Once a creature that lays Roe finishes mating, the eggs can be laid immediately, skipping the gather nest materials quest. But once a carnivore begins to eat the egg, the egg becomes unhatchable. If the Roe is taken out of the water, incubation pauses until it enters water again. Land nests cannot be laid underwater, and mammals cannot birth underwater (Unless it is an fully aquatic mammal, which in that case will need to have a separate birthing system)
If a player claimed egg is waiting to be born, but is eaten by a carnivore, the death screen will display and take them back to character selection much like if they were to die normally, but they won't lose anything.
Herbivores cannot eat eggs.
Eggs count as MEAT so Omnivores who have Meat as an option in their diet tab can eat eggs. If an egg is larger then half of a Scavengers body size, they cannot eat the eggs at all, because they cant pick them up. This is to prevent smaller faster dinosaurs from one-biting eggs to make them unhatchable, because that's mean and annoying and people will definitely do it. Eggs can ONLY be eaten if they are picked up first.
It is absolutely possible for a Thalassodromeus to swipe a Deinonychus egg and put them in their own nest. Don't let your kids get dino-napped! Who knows what will happen to them...they could just be food for the rest of the Thaloss nest! Or, the Thaloss plans to raise the Deino as one of her own...who knows? Roe cannot be put inside land nests, and land eggs cannot be put underwater with Roe. The incubation simply stops. Birth bundles will drown if underwater for too long. Mammals should avoid giving birth in areas with shallow water, so that the baby doesn't drown. The only reason to steal roe out of the water is for a snack, but if an aquatic is smart, she'll lay her eggs deep in the ocean where even some semi-aquatics can't get to.
That about does it for the Nesting update and what I would like to see out of it once it comes around!
!!THIS IS SIMPLY A SUGGESTION AND HOW I WISH THINGS WILL TURN OUT, THIS DOES NOT EXIST IN THE GAME, AND I DO NOT WORK FOR THE COMPANY WHO MAKES PATH OF TITANS!!

2023.06.04 07:00 rdk67 Spring Day 75: A Distorted Reality is Now a Necessity to be Free
(This is a nonviolent text. Thank you Elliott Smith for the title.)
How far are we from admitting that the police state, the military industrial complex, and mass incarceration are distorting the virtual characteristic of reality for the rest of us terrans? A year? Maybe next decade? Not in anyone’s lifetime? Timelines stretch to infinity while I’m lolling in the grass, gazing at the clouds, which are like uncharted islands in an ocean, which might well suggest the space between them, but think also of the volcanic origin of islands – the pressure applied by sunlight to make the world grow also forces clouds to the surface. The clouds are like destination vacations for wild supposition – not just the birds and fishes that leap out of the silver fabric, but the unidentified anomalous phenomena that come and go, hoping the world might finally notice. Are clouds cursed with unidentifiability? Is that their persistent anomaly?
Once again – that virtual characteristic being distorted, whose presence will provide us with the transcendental turn merely from noticing it? Our civilization has been constructed from use of force potential, such that we collectively agree that some forms of violence are inappropriate and some forms are protected by law. With the bad version, the harm is usually done to people we know, in a moment of insufficient self-understanding or –control. In the legal version, the killing is usually done to strangers for money. Money is also paid to those who train them to kill, to those who define the legal perimeters of killing, and to those who manufacture the tools for doing the killing. Both versions of killing are defined by the limits of allowable debate, otherwise known as the distorted virtual characteristic of reality, aka the basis for civilization.
In a sense, we’ve decided, in the interest of civilization, there will be good domestic violence, and there will be bad domestic violence, and the good domestic violence will be the one people get paid to do, whereas the second kind is mostly done for free, which might be why people also sometimes steal in the vicinity of illegal domestic violence – armed robbery, for instance – because unlike the police who arrest them, side arms drawn, the perpetrators don’t get paid to do it. Imagine the bafflement that would bubble into view without a distorted reality to keep it all clear! Of course, I know there’s more to it – we have to keep our stories straight, and that takes planning, institutions, who the last word goes to in disputes. Citations, commendations, ad campaigns among the biggest on the planet – a lot goes in to keeping our stories straight.
Each island-like cloud has its own relationship to fluid dynamics, such that the clouds don’t just drift through the sky but experience internal dispute. I look away from one of these clouds for a minute, and when I look back, the colosseums are all in ruins.

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must set out on his own to save those he loves most. Anyone can wear the mask – it’s how you wear it that makes you a hero.

Thankfully, the wait is almost finally over, as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will return to screens soon. This time Miles will not only be reunited with Gwen Stacey (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) but he'll also be introduced to an entire multiversal society of Spider-people created and led by a particularly pessimistic variant of Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). Though some of the other variants in this secretive organization view Miles as a nuisance more than anything else, they'll have to learn to put those apprehensions aside if they hope to save the multiverse from an all-new terrifying threat. How to Watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
There's been no official announcement regarding Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's streaming release date, though we know it will eventually be released on Netflix, rather than Disney+ or HBO Max.
In terms of which of the streaming giants Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released on, Netflix will house the film upon its streaming debut. While again, Sony does not have its own dedicated streaming service, a deal was struck in 2021 between the studio and Netflix. The deal, stating that Netflix would stream Sony's films after theatrical release, was penned for 5 years meaning Across the Spider-Verse is part of the arrangement.
While Sony's Spider-Man content is also streaming on Disney+, due to the collaborations between Sony and Marvel Studios in recent years, Across the Spider-Verse will be a Netflix release. While the deal struck between Marvel Studios and Sony may extend to this film, Disney+ is only allowed to begin streaming Sony's Spider-Man releases upon their release on Netflix. As a result, Netflix will be the first streaming service that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be available on after its theatrical release.
Because it’s airing on FX, you can of course fire up Into the Spider-Verse via FX Now. But in addition, the animated flick is streaming on both fubo (which offers a free trial and has cord-cutting plans starting at $74.99/month; sign up here) and DirecTV (which also offers a free trial and has cord-cutting plans starting at $64.99/month.
Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in Theaters?
Not only was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse the subject of rave reviews, but it also pulled in some gargantuan levels of cash at the international box office, with a final tally that quadrupled the film's ninety-million dollar budget. With incredible success like that, it's only natural that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would also be taking advantage of a theatrical release. That is the case, as the upcoming film will be exclusively available in theaters when it premieres on June 2nd, 2023.
When Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be on Streaming?
The Spider-Man franchise is in a pretty interesting place regarding streaming. The various films of Sony's franchise have typically been scattered across multiple services. That said, following a historic deal between Sony and Disney, the many stories of Peter Parker and beyond are now available on Disney+. This includes the original Sam Raimi trilogy, the first Amazing Spider-Man film, and, starting mid-May, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Venom. Notably absent from the Disney-streaming platform so far are The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Morbius, and most significant of all, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Some of the films are not currently available on the service because Sony has pre-existing partnerships with Starz, as that's where most of the absent films are available to stream. That is except for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is instead only streaming on Fubo TV and FX Now.
If Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse comes to Disney+ before Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's theatrical run concludes, that would make the House of Mouse's service a likely contender for a streaming release. However, Sony has also historically partnered with Netflix for streaming releases. Up until recently, that's where Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was available to stream, and Sony still brings their other big releases to the service, like Bullet Train and The Woman King.
When will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse be streaming on Netflix?
Sony Animation’s big new Spider-Man movie is about to hit theaters and will be headed to Netflix (at least in the United States) later this year. For a prediction as to when and a bit more about the new movie, here’s what you need to know.
As we covered in 2021, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be headed to Netflix as the service gets both Sony’s animation and live-action content via a first window deal struck in April 2021.
The deal stipulates that all Sony theatrical movies come to Netflix in the first window, which at a minimum, is 120 days after its theatrical release date. If it arrives exactly 120 days after, it’ll be streaming from September 30th, 2023.
With that said, given how big this movie is, we may see it release a few weeks after the fact. Either way, we expect the movie to be available between late September and November 2023.
Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be Streaming On Netflix?
Yes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is coming to Netflix approximately in December 2023.
In 2021, Sony and Netflix signed a five-year deal that gave the latter exclusive first-pay-window U.S. streaming rights for Sony Pictures titles after their theatrical and home entertainment windows. Fans can expect to watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Netflix six months after the film’s theatrical release, thus in December 2023. The date seems reasonable considering that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dropped on Netflix on June 26, 2019, six months after its U.S. release on December 14, 2018. The pay-one window usually begins about nine months after a film’s theatrical release, but it might start earlier in particular cases.
Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be On HBO Max?
No, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will not be on HBO Max since it’s not a Universal Pictures movie. Last year, the company released its films in theaters and on the streamer on the same day. However, they now allow a 45-day window between the theatrical release and the streaming release.
Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be Streaming On Disney+?
Yes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is also coming to Disney Plus approximately in 2025.
Once the pay-one window runs its time and Netflix’s exclusive rights expire, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be available on Disney Plus. The pay-one window might last as long as 18 months, which means it will be a while before Disney Plus subscribers can watch the much-anticipated sequel. Unlike in other countries, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse isn’t yet available on the Disney-owned streamer in the U.S.
American fans will have to wait until 2024 to watch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and at least until 2025 for its sequel. We will update this post once there is an official Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Disney Plus release date.
Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Available On Hulu?
Viewers are saying that they want to view the new Marvel's animation movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Hulu. Unfortunately, this is not possible since Hulu currently does not offer any of the free episodes of this series streaming at this time. It will be exclusive to the MTV channel, which you get by subscribing to cable or satellite TV services. You will not be able to watch it on Hulu or any other free streaming service.

You can also rent or buy the movie on iTunes or Google Play. You can also watch it on-demand or on a streaming app available on your TV or streaming device if you have cable.
When Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be on DVD and Blu-ray?
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will likely be coming to DVD and Blu-ray around the same time as the streaming release. With theatrical films, on average, coming to streaming sooner than ever (usually ninety days after theatrical release), we'll likely see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse get a DVD, and Blu-ray release no later than Fall 2023.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Cast and Characters
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was written by Dave Callaham, Phil Lord and Chris Miller and directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson. It stars the following actors:

What is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse About?
Returning with many of your favorite characters, including Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, Peter B. ParkeSpider-Man, and of course Miles Morales as our primary Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set one year after the events of the previous film. Miles (Shameik Moore) is coming into his own as Spider-Man when he is unexpectedly approached by Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) with an extraordinary opportunity. Does Miles want to help a team of Spider-People, led by Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) protect the multiverse from the terrifying threat of a man known as The Spot (Jason Schwartzman)?
Obviously, Miles is going to say yes, setting him up for an adventure that will expand this movie’s concept of the multiverse in every possible way. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse promises tons of new characters and worlds, without losing sight of what people have come to love about this particular Spider-franchise.
Miles Morales has become a massively popular Spider-Man, and you can be certain he’ll be at the center of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s chaotic blend of action, comedy, comic book aesthetics, and large-scale science fiction. It seems more likely than not that Across the Spider-Verse will be the biggest animated release of 2023.

2023.06.04 06:50 super_common_name Advice requested about an unruly HOA member
California, 4-unit building, condos. I'm new to this sub so I apologize if I shouldn't be posting this question. (I looked at the sub guidelines and searched the sub, etc.)
Our HOA has 4 members, 1 for each unit. One member is hard to deal with and I'm worried he's going to do something destructive. Here's the situation:
He owned the entire building before he converted to condos. He sold 3 of the units and kept 1 unit for himself.
He privately owns a free-standing garage on the property. There are laundry facilities in the garage (washer, dryer, sink, water heater.) When he sold to us, he gave us an easement to use the laundry facilities. His own unit has a washedryer within the unit itself.
He had installed 3 cupboards in the garage for laundry supplies, one assigned to each of our units. He verbally told us that the garage laundry was for our exclusive use, and his unit would use its own washedryer.
The first year we owned our condos, we had to replace the washedryer, sink, and water heater. We also had to make repairs to the garage door. He asked us to pay all these costs ourselves instead of through the HOA because the laundry facilities were for our exclusive use. We agreed and have paid for all maintenance expenses, too.
When he sold, he never installed an electric meter for the common area, which includes the garage laundry. The laundry electric bill is on his own meter. We have a gas dryer, so his cost is very small. He has always wanted us to reimburse him, which we are happy to do. But he wants $60 a month, which seems too high. He has never shown us any of his electric bills, has never actually billed us, and won't discuss a smaller amount.
As an aside, there is one gas meter that the HOA pays the bill for. His unit is the only unit with a gas heater, which costs the HOA about $1,000 extra per year just to heat his unit. We've brought it up to him and are considering charging him, but that's its own can of worms we'd like to avoid.
The sales documents and CC&Rs weren't clear enough, so after 10 years (and him refusing to pay his dues or let us use the laundry facilities at all) we finally had to go to mediation to get this resolved. The mediation ruling, though, still isn't very clear. It forced him to pay his dues and gave us the right to use the facilities, but said we should figure out the electricity costs on our own. The ruling also didn't specify that our use is exclusive. We didn't realize that would become an important point.
So now we have two problems:
- He's rented out his unit and lets his tenants use our laundry facilities. His unit is very large, and he rents to groups of 6 to 12 college students. We've asked him to limit the number to 6, but he doesn't always comply. Our units only have 3 people. So the facilities now have triple the number of users, which means it's harder to find a time when they're free and also means that the wear and tear is 3 times as much. Also, his tenants have broken two dryer filters so far. In the past, they ruined a washer which we had to replace. He wouldn't pay for the damage, claiming that we couldn't prove it was his tenants. (We've since installed a security camera.)
- We still haven't been able to agree on how much we should pay for electricity. Installing a new meter is cost-prohibitive, so that's not a solution. This is a smaller problem, though, because I think we'd be willing to pay the $60 just to avoid more hassle.
We've repeatedly told him that we own the laundry facilities and his tenants don't have permission to use them. In response:
- He temporarily turned off the electricity. That also meant that the common area and staircase were without lights, which was unsafe.
- He is now threatening to remove the washedryer, which we own.
Our CC&Rs require us to go to binding arbitration to settle any disputes between owners. We're planning to do that, but he has told us that he'll refuse to go to mediation because this was "already settled" in mediation. I suppose even if he doesn't go, the mediator can still rule in our favor. But my questions are:
- How do we enforce the mediator's ruling?
- How do we protect ourselves against his retaliation, like stealing our washedryer or turning off our common area electricity?
Thanks for any advice you can give.

2023.06.04 06:45 ace_of_kats The Nature of Cannibals: Chapter 1-The Way of Things
Hi guys! This is my first NoP fanfic, and the first fanfic in general that I’ve ever published. In addition, it’s only the second that I was able to complete a single chapter for. What I’m trying to say here is that I might not be the best writer due to my lack of experience, so please don’t hate; I’m trying my best. However, if there is something you think I can improve on, feel free to leave
polite, constructive criticism in the comments.
Also, though I do have plans for more chapters (in fact, actual NoP stuff won’t happen until chapter 4), I might not be able to complete them, at least not with any haste. I apologize if this is an inconvenience, but do keep in mind that all of this is free and thus offered solely at my discretion. That said, I hope you find this
very entertaining! (and yes, that’s a Hazbin Hotel reference, for those of you in that fandom… and perhaps a bit of foreshadowing… ^`v´^.)

Memory Transcription Subject: Skoy, Larul hunter
Date (standardized human time): December 18th, 2141
It was a pleasure to kill. Ever since my first hunt, 3 La-cycles [local years, each approximately 1.5 Earth years long] ago, I had relished in the many joys of the process. From stalking prey down, waiting for the perfect time to strike, to the climactic triumph of finally swooping in for the kill. It satisfied something deep and instinctual within me, for
I was a predator.
And there was nothing wrong with that. Animals
have to consume other lifeforms to survive.
It is simply the way of things. Still, it was also a
pain. It was a pain to take the life of an animal, to take the life of a creature that felt fear and felt pain, to take the life of a creature that cried in desperation for that mercy which was not and could not be given. As I slit the throat of my prey – as his warm, dark orange blood coated my hands; its sweet, savory, rich, metallic,
saliva-inducing scent wafting into my nostrils; tantalizing me with the promise of the feast that was to come – I felt hunger, yes. But I also felt as if a bowstring inside of me was pulled taut and then mercilessly released, letting loose a proverbial arrow that pierced my soul just as deeply as an actual arrow would pierce a creature’s heart. And from that wound, a shadow of grief spread throughout my entire being, like a thundercloud threatening to drown me in sorrow. As I watched the light leave his eyes, it felt as if the light within me dimmed a little bit as well. One couldn’t tell it from my detached expression, but I was overwhelmed with emotion. It was almost as if I actually
cared about those I killed. Stupid empathy. Always such a bother; always trying to get in the way of what has to be done. I was a hunter; I had killed countless times before and should be beyond such things. Though I suppose I had never killed prey of this kind before. Prey of
my kind before. But desperate times called for desperate measures. Better
they get hurt than someone in
my tribe. Better them… than Kolas.
Kolas was my youngest sister, still just a child. She’d be 6 La-cycles [9 Earth years] old now, barely a pre-adolescent [12 y.o. human maturation equivalent]. It would be a couple of La-cycles [3 Earth years] until she was old enough to join me in the Pack – if she wanted to, that is. I mean, she has never been anything but a shining epitome of kindness; not really the type to kill
anything, let alone… this. But I’m sure that given time, she would come to understand the necessity of our role, and could learn to take the lives of at least our normal prey. But most importantly of all, if she joined the Pack, she would be given the chance to learn how to fight: which meant she would finally be able to defend herself.
Kolas was always a bit smaller and weaker than the other children her age, and they, recognizing her as an easy target, bullied her relentlessly for it. But perhaps her greatest bully of all was no child, but
her own mother. Sabwo - our mother, and that of the tribe – had no patience for anything she saw as weakness. She believed that brute strength and might were incredibly important in a leader, and as her heirs, any lack of these qualities was unacceptable in us. She also believed that the best way to forge these attributes in a person was to beat it into them – both emotionally and physically – until their hides grew tough and their souls grew hard. I was lucky in that I had little trouble keeping up with her expectations; I was born a strong, healthy baby who was able to grow into a strong, healthy adult. Plus, I was naʻa [nonbinary], and thus considered sacred, so the village wouldn’t have let her get away with treating me
too roughly. Our middle sister, Kovoy, though not protected by her gender and its associated status, was similarly advantaged in other ways: she grew up to be even stronger in body and tougher in spirit than I. Of course, things weren’t as easy for Kolas, my dear youngest sister.
Physically, she was put at a disadvantage with her naturally smaller frame; she didn’t stand a chance against the other kids – who were almost twice her weight – let alone Sabwo, who was not only an adult woman, but a rather large and muscular one at that. And emotionally, Kolas always had a very soft and sensitive nature. Sabwo always taught us that a leader must never let their emotions overwhelm them, nor should those emotions be allowed to sway one’s judgement. She also taught us that a leader should always handle themselves with aplomb, never betraying any sadness, fear, or even joy they may feel. The only emotion she ever showed freely, or encouraged us to show freely, was a sort of cold animosity that sent shivers down the spines of anyone who dared to find themselves at the wrong end of her ire. Kolas’s personality, of course, was the exact opposite of this. She was the type to be both driven by and easily overwhelmed by her emotions, and to always show them outwardly. On top of that, there wasn’t a mean bone in her body.
Speaking of bodies, I was brought back to the reality of my current situation by a sharp pain on my left side, right below my ribs. I hadn’t had a bite to eat for 7 A-cycles [local days, each lasting 18 Earth hours; 7 A-cycles≈5 Earth days] now; I was looking forward to finally having a proper meal. Yet, as I looked down at my kill, that lifeless corpse, that used to be someone, someone with a life so similar to mine, *even more similar to my sis- …*no. I couldn’t think like that right now. As I stared at the… meat, because that’s all this was now, I reminded myself that really, I was
saving the lives of those I loved. When I and the other hunters left my tribe, the crops were failing. And as we set out to look for game, we found none. I knew that if we did not return with something soon, Sabwo, as leader, would have to kill her own people so that we wouldn’t all starve. And knowing her; in all of her cold, calculating, loveless, glory; she’d slaughter the member of the tribe that she saw as contributing the least. Even if that person was her own youngest daughter – that little sister I loved so much.
“That was a close one, wasn’t it?” a hushed, but still-too-loud voice exclaimed in a poor attempt at whispering.
“Quiet, or we’ll get caught!” I hissed.
Lashayu, the owner of that voice, recoiled and shrunk to a quadrupedal stance, his long, bushed-up tail tucked between his legs and his ears lowered and pinned back in submission. Though I couldn’t help but notice that those ears were a rather dark shade of orange. Almost as if he were… flustered? No, that couldn’t be right; he was a child – and one that I’ve been nothing but cold to at that.
Our hunt chief, Hwoy, sent Lashayu to help me with this hunt. He had jumped down from a higher branch – one of many this treetop village was built upon – so that he landed right in front of our prey. With Lashayu’s presence as a distraction, it was easier for me to sneak up from behind and make the kill. Though a one-to-one fight would have been fairer and thus more honorable, we could not afford to care about such abstract values when the survival of our tribe depended on the success of this hunt. And apparently, even though Lashayu was armed with both a hunting knife
and a rather long stick, our prey would have kicked his ass had I not been there to swiftly dispatch him before he could do so. Hence his earlier comment.
I really couldn’t blame him for his incompetence though, as he was so young and so new to the Pack. A, he was younger than
I was when I joined, and barely older than Kolas was now! And unlike me, he didn’t even
want to be here! Most boys are excited when it comes time for them to be drafted; having had it drilled into their heads from a young age that “it’s your sacred duty!” and “an honor to go out into the wilderness to provide for your tribe!”. But some, of course, are unpersuaded. The wilderness, after all, is a dangerous place. For one, we weren’t the only hunters out here. There were quite a few creatures higher on the food chain than us; losing a hunter was the most probable end to an encounter with them. Even those below us on the food chain could be dangerous; a hunt gone awry could spell disaster. On top of having to face such perils, Lashayu was forced to enact decisions that no 7 La-cycle old [11 y.o.; 15 y.o. human maturation equiv.] child should. To take any part in murder, even if it was for your own survival, would surely cause some lasting emotional effects. All things considered, perhaps I shouldn’t be so hard on Lashayu; he was dealing with a lot and didn’t deserve my criticism.
Besides, I couldn’t complete this hunt without him; I would need another person to help me carry out the body swiftly so that we wouldn’t be caught. Otherwise, an all-out war between our peoples could occur. Though we were obviously not above murder, we wanted to avoid such excessive bloodshed as war; it would just be a waste, really.
So, Lashayu pulled out two small lengths of rope from his pack, which we used to tie the wrists and ankles of our prey to the long stick Lashayu carried. That way, it would be much easier to transport the body. Now that I think about it, it was kind of fitting that Lashayu be the one to carry the stick we would use for this since his name literally translated to “stick”. The humorous play on words coaxed a small smile and tail flick from my previously stone-cold countenance. But I digress.
As we set off to bring the body back to the group, I returned to my musings about my sister. I tried to imagine Kolas as a hunter taking the kill, and couldn’t help but huff in amusement, for the sheer implausibility of her ever committing such an act was almost laughable.
No, she would not join the Pack. Even if it would bring us together, even if it was her best chance of escaping the constant harassment she faced back home, she would not do it. “What’s so funny?” Lashayu inquired once we reached a distance where it was unlikely anyone would hear us as long as we remained quiet. “I- if I may ask, sir,” he quickly added, stumbling over himself in awkward, overexaggerated deference. It was honestly kind of cute. Not in a weird way of course, more like the way a small animal is cute. And not that I could tell him that anyway; a friendship between us could prove messy; it was for the best that our relationship remained strictly professional.
Processing his question, I heaved a wistful sigh, tail and ears lowered, a sad smile on my face. “Oh… it’s…” I stopped myself before I could get too personal. Could I really let him know just how worried I was about my sister?
He might think I’d gone soft. He might think I was weak.
And I couldn’t, ever, be weak. No, I must maintain my uncaring façade. So, I put on that mask of aggression that never failed to hide what was going on underneath; I pinned my ears back, gave my tail a good thrash, and snarled through gritted teeth: “It’s…
it’s none of your business.”

2023.06.04 06:43 fitzafnu MD port authority planned Patapsco CAD site
Background:
The Maryland Port Authority has to constantly dredge the Baltimore Harbor, shipping terminals, and shipping channels to keep them open. Much of the dredge removed from the Baltimore harbor and Patapsco River near old industrial sites is contaminated with heavy metals, oils, and other toxic "forever" chemicals. The Maryland Port Authority (MPA) has to dry and store this dredged material in special "containment sites" because it is unsafe for human exposure. (See
https://maryland-dmmp.com/). Before the 1970s, this material was often dumped back into the Chesapeake Bay. After ecological awareness arose in the 1970s and dumping was regulated, MPA was forced to create diked land-based dredge containment facilities to dry and store dredged material.
These sites, once created, are forever contaminated. MPA has done its best to create these sites where they make the least impact - often in already-contaminated abandoned industrial areas. MPA also creates conservation areas to make amends for the harm, makes clean dredge available for shoreline restorations and construction projects, makes contaminated dredge available for re-use research, and in some cases recreates islands lost to erosion (Hart-Miller Island, Poplar Island, and James and Barren Islands) using dredged material.
After significant pushback from communities near Hart-Miller Island for decades and years of litigation, MPA shut down the Hart-Miller dredge containment facility before its completion and shifted their attention to creating dredge containment sites near Baltimore in already-contaminated industrial areas next to Fort Armistead (Cox Creek DMCF) in Anne Arundel County and in Masonville next to Brooklyn. Ongoing dredging activities and plans to fill these sites to heights of 60 feet or higher with contaminated dredge and their runoff are already a significant concern for the quality of the water and the aquatic life in the Patapsco and its tidal tributaries. A potentially even greater concern is that because MPA is running out of land-based locations to contain contaminated dredge, it now plans to create Confined Aquatic Dredge (CAD) sites in the seabed of the Patapsco River to essentially bury contaminated dredge underwater in the sea floor. The first MPA full scale CAD site is planned to be built one mile off the shore of the communities of Stoney Beach and Riviera Beach near the entrance to Stoney Creek.
The planned Patapsco CAD site will be up to 220 acres in size. MPA plans to remove clean seabed material from the site for several months and make it available to construction companies and for shoreline restoration efforts and then replace it with contaminated dredge material for several more months sometime in the next year. MPA asserts that unlike historic dredge dumping, this CAD site will be "capped" and "safe". However, there will inevitably be a significant release of contaminants and turbidity into the Patapsco from this activity and permanent impact within and near the CAD site. Contaminated dredge material suspended in water can't be totally contained. Moreover, long-term ecological impacts from leaching and seabed shifting can't be predicted.
Concerns:
Northern Anne Arundel communities near the planned CAD site are very concerned about several potential issues related to its creation:
- The noise from planned 24/7 dredging for several months at a time as well as spotlighting at night since this will be over a mile closer to Stoney Beach and Riviera Beach than the shipping channel.
- The safety of residents in nearby waters to swim, fish, and engage in watersports on the Patapsco and in Stoney Creek, Cox Creek, and downstream tributaries during and after dredging from exposure to chemical and biological toxins released into the water.
- The impact of such dredging on aquatic life and ecosystems including waterfowl that depend on it.
- The long-term ecological impact on the CAD site, nearby shorelines, and the tidal waters around it.
- The potential short and long-term geographical extent of ecological and human exposure to released toxins given unpredictable winds, currents, storms, tidal swings, and sea level rise.
We have questions related to these concerns and would like a greater understanding of how impacts will be measured and mitigated and what the potential risks to our communities might be - including being exposed to chemical and biological toxins. Of particular concern if this program moves forward is how will toxins be measured, where will they be measured, how will communities be notified if toxins in the water around their shoreline reaches harmful levels, and what might the long-term effects of such toxins be that might settle around our shorelines?
While we are concerned, we also appreciate that MPA is creating conservation sites such as the Swan Creek Wetlands next to the Cox Creek facility and making clean dredge material available at little or no cost to communities engaged in shoreline restoration efforts - including Stoney Beach which is planning an important natural shoreline project to protect a highly eroded natural area at our point where the Patapsco meets Stoney Creek. This greatly reduces the cost of shoreline restoration.
