SUBJECT-DESIGNATION: Admiral Marcus Miller LOCATION: Earthen Orbit, Atlantic Citadel DATE: EARTH-TIME [Wednesday, August 23, 2186] ---
I stood above Earth, gazing down upon her bright blue brilliance from the comfort of my personal quarters.
It was odd to think that just five hundred years ago, humanity had been scared of the darkness that lingered at the forest’s edge. I couldn’t imagine that those born during that time could have ever imagined the heights which we would rise to. My only hope was that our vast distance from the ground of primitivity wouldn’t lead to a devastating fall.
Already it felt like a lifetime ago that my crew and I had braved our own dark forest—the endless expanse of space beyond our system’s heliopause. Now we knew of the devils that rested at the edge of those shadows. The fires of Sol and the shield of our Oort cloud were all that now stood between us and them. At least in the process of our journey, we had met another group of weary travelers. We now knew that we were not alone.
The reaction to our discovery of the Khimrox—or perhaps their discovery of us—had actually gone over quite well with the global population, though some fringe groups chose to remain skeptical for reasons I couldn’t fathom.
Following the acceptance of the Khimroxian people as refugees, I was rather quickly promoted to the position of admiral. Despite it being an honorary title for the time-being, it was one that I wore with pride. Besides, considering how things were currently going among the leadership of the UEN, it was my guess that we would soon need all of the fleet commanders we could get.
Being separated from my crew though, it was certainly an ordeal. For over a year, we had trained and prepared for our journey aboard the Challenger, all the while forming a strong bond—the bond of a crew. It was them who had kept my mind from plunging into the hopeless darkness that threatened to envelop my mind back aboard the ruined wreck of our exploratory vessel.
Liz and Garth had been reassigned to finally fulfill their true calling as biologists. Together, they dove head-first into in-depth studies of Khimroxian anatomy and physiology. Sid had opted to assist in the deconstruction of the
Ignis, allowing its analysis by a team of scientists that included Lee. As far as I was aware, they had so far produced staggeringly impressive results in regards to potential military applications. Jake was probably the wisest among us, choosing to enter an early retirement, which I quite honestly considered the smartest move. Each member of the Challenger had essentially become an influential celebrity overnight. If any of us chose to, we wouldn’t need to work another day in our lives.
Nia had taken an extended leave of absence following our return and chose to take up temporary residence within the Khimrox colony. Darius was perhaps the only one that had stuck with me. Due to my request, he was to be the chief navigational officer of a brand new fleet that had been promised to me—an experimental UEN fleet by the name of
Vengeant Dawn. Though word hadn’t yet officially been released, some part of me could sense the storm approaching on the horizon. War was coming. The only questions that remained were when and how it would be waged, one of which we were currently working to answer.
Some remained skeptical, but me, I had been waiting since the day I first heard of that wretched name, the one which hid behind a thin and lustrous coat. They would pay in blood for what they had done to our Khimroxian friends and to all of the scion species that they considered beneath them.
Speaking of those pricks… I turned from the window to look back at the objects of interest.
We had already begun to install improvements and replacements for our own technology from what we had researched so far. The holo-table of my room was one such improvement.
Atop it, hovered three ire-inspiring figures—the bastards of the Orion Arm.
One was what looked to be a molluscoid. Twelve long and winding tentacles stretched from its body. The creature’s skin could possess a wide variety of colors, but this one took on a dark shade of blue. Atop its head—or back, I still wasn’t entirely sure—was a large circular shell that spiraled backwards. The shell itself was fairly reminiscent of an ammonite, with the notable exception of its golden sheen. A green pair of eyes with slitted black pupils could be found at either side of its face. At the end of each of its limbs were a strange bunch of contraptions that were barely recognizable as the manipulators they were. To support its spineless body—and perhaps its brazen cowardice—was an exoskeleton which covered the length of its tentacles, allowing it to rise to an ironically respectable height.
The Dodektopi. The second was a shape that made no sense according to what little we apparently knew regarding the formation of life. The figure of flames was somewhat humanoid in shape, but distinct enough to separate it from ourselves. A frenzy of dancing plasma licked across the surface of its shape, occasionally whipping out from its body in flares of solar activity. Centered within the fiery specter’s face was an unfamiliar symbol forged out of a sleek black metal that did not burn with the being’s body. Its hands and feet that connected the body were made of similar steel and seemed to hold the shape together with the help of the head.
The Novari. Last but most certainly not least was a chillingly familiar shape. It was an ancient and terrible legend made manifest. The draconic figure before me bore ebony-black scales. A wicked pair of gold curling horns rose from the tyrant’s skull, covered in rings of that black metal that wrapped around them. Cryptic runes—whose mere existence denoted their ancient nature—were etched into the bone of these very same horns. Surrounding its head were countless quills that reached back behind the skull. From its oddly placed back pair of shoulders sprouted leathery wings that curled around the body, nearly encircling it in a hug. A long tail whose spiked end was covered in yet more of those sleek black rings fell behind them. The creature wore nothing more than a red ornamented kilt, bearing the same symbols as those etched upon its body across the sashes which held it in place. Its imposing physique was proudly put on display and an amber pair of greedy eyes rested behind its black maw of terrible teeth.
At the second and frontward pair of stubby shoulders, a shimmering pair of auric arms, engraved with yet more of those runes. I could have recognized their design anywhere. They bore an uncanny similarity with those utilized by our Khimrox friends. The three primary differences between those of them and those that belong to our friends were the sheer quality of the design, the notable exception of their shimmering sheen and their lethal talons that had been sharpened to a shining point.
The Aeryvyn. The terrible triumvirate mocked me with their mere presence, but I couldn’t tear them away from my sight. It’s fortunate that something else did it for me.
A ping that rained from the speakers in my ceiling heralded the incoming message. “All UEN personnel with alpha clearance please report to the briefing room.” Two more times, the soft and purposefully inoffensive voice repeated itself.
With a sigh, I shut off the display and marched to don the new garb that matched my position. When my door slid open, I saw several others stride through the long hall of yet more doors that matched my own.
The familiar scent of ozone had been a relief following the unnaturally clean air of the Ignis. That ship was no longer the home of the Khimroxian refugees, so I had little care for its continued existence. By now, it was a skeleton of alien alloys.
Our straight, gray walls and steel-vented floors were showered in warm light. Compared to the Ignis where the too-white surface where wall and floor blended together, the scenic viewing ports and recognizable craftsmanship felt like the warm embrace of a long-lost friend.
Speaking of friends, I wonder if I’ll see Saffan. Weeks had passed now since I last saw the captain-ambassador. His new position ensured this was so.
A stream of gray-coated senior staff flowed through the doors to the briefing room. At the entrance, a full complement of soldiers outfitted with Styx suits stood guard. That generation of armor would soon be outdated in comparison to the schematics I had seen prepared.
My heart warmed involuntarily as I entered the room. Saffan’s bright eyes of perpetual wideness stared back at me. I shouldered my way through the convening crowds of admirals. Each spoke with a weight of self-importance that I couldn’t have cared less for.
When I finally reached him he called my name. “Marcus!” The captain extended a hand.
Wait, what? I wasn’t sure whether to be more confused by his use of the gesture or his new set of arms. They were admittedly simple compared to the prior pair and they were coated with a blue shine that matched his eyes. The digits no longer took the shape of those reptilian claws, instead forming an approximation of human fingers.
The hands locked perfectly with my own. “Saffan, good to see you again. How are things going?”
“Wonderfully. Though I must say, you humans seem to have more countries than you know what to do with.” Saffan folded his arms. “I’ve visited thirteen nations already and I still have over a hundred that have sent me visitation invitations.”
A scoff escaped my throat. “Yeah, that’s us for you. Needlessly overcomplicated.”
I took a step forward and placed a hand on a brilliant blue arm. “And these! When did you get these?” Saffan practically beamed at my inquiry.
“Elizabeth and Garth actually helped design them! They’re exceptionally lightweight compared to my last pair and they can fold to not hinder flight.” As he said this, the two artificial limbs pressed up against his body as he fully folded his wings in a similar manner. With both arms and wings folded, he would have looked like a great horned owl if not for the obvious discrepancies of his size, his horned head and the swirling patterns that covered his wings.
“That’s enough about me though, how have you been? What have you been up to?”
“Ah, not much,” I said, rubbing the back of my head. “Paid the family a visit a week back for the first time since the Challenger. For the most part though, I've been training on the battle sims these last few weeks. If I’m to be an admiral, may as well try to play the part.” Saffan slowly nodded. I got the feeling that he too sensed the approaching storm.
“This family of yours, I’d love to meet them some time.”
“Oh, I’m sure they’d love to meet you I…”
“Attention!” The stern sound cut me off. The rippling chorus of speech died down almost immediately as the call demanded our undivided focus. I could’ve recognized that voice anywhere.
“Thank you for joining me, my friends.”
“You’re a smart bunch of people, so I’m sure you’ve gotten the sense for what’s been going on by now.” Redd took a deep sigh and looked around the room at the entirety of the UEN navy’s command structure.
“Ever since the Khimroxians arrived, we’ve been faced with a choice—a choice that must not be taken lightly.” The captain turned our way and gave Saffan a nod.
“When the brave souls aboard the
Ignis saved the crew of the
Challenger, they showed the true character of their people. They were faced with hard decisions—for our people and theirs—but they chose to push forward and in so doing, saved not only the lives of those aboard the Challenger, but all of Earth from falling subject to their lords. After due deliberation with the council-members of the United Earthen Nations, we have decided to follow in the footsteps of our friends and take such a risk.”
“As of right now, we are at war with the
Alliance of the Aurum Arm.” The room fell into deafening silence.
“Each member-state of the UEN will alert their people in due time, but for the moment, not a single word heard within this meeting must be uttered outside of this room.”
Admiral Sturm, the very man who had been my commander not all that long ago, spoke up. “With all due respect, Director, we don’t have the means to wage such a conflict.”
“That's why we’ll create the means. For once, I’m glad to say something good came out of the Kuiper War.” This derived a few nervous laughs from the audience. “With the production facilities appropriated from the (x corporation), and with a few adjustments, we have the potential to create the most powerful fleet of human-made ships to ever enter space.”
“Unfortunately however, we do not have the means to reproduce the white hole drives utilized by the Aurum vessels, or even the dark matter used to stabilize the damned things.”
“Saffan, this is where you and your people will come in. If we are to stand a chance of waging war on such a scale, we will need intelligence and lots of it.”
“As difficult as it may be, we need information; without it, we’re dead in the vacuum of space. We
will need volunteers to go behind enemy lines and retrieve plans, schematics, layouts, anything that we can get a hold of that may provide us an advantage both strategically and technologically. Would your people be willing to go to such lengths?”
All eyes in the room turned to the ambassador-captain. “I—I don’t know. I will consult with them, but do I have your permission to speak freely about what you have told me?”
The aging man rubbed his orange-brown beard. “Yes. Yes that would probably be for the best wouldn’t it. Very well, just do your best not to allow it to reach other ears.”
“Yes sir.”
“As for the rest of you, allow me to detail the plan we have so far.”
“Though most of the security council members are not tacticians, they have agreed to the plan that I and a few of my most trusted consultants have prepared. Right now, the nearest sector with a habitable planet is known as Mortamis. This was the last jump point for the
Ignis before it intercepted our distress signal. The tentative plan is to begin our expansion across their territory with the capture of this world to act as the staging grounds of our forces. However, until we receive more information regarding the exact layout of their defenses, we cannot commit to such an invasion.”
“From there, we will split up the UEN fleets into separate groups across the Orion arm and take out these tyrants by bleeding them of their most precious resource. Scions. Every world we take is an addition to our numbers, our production capacity, and our ability to fight.”
“Our end-goal is to capture the planet-capital of the alliance, Petris, and demand liberation of all species under control of the Aurum Alliance.“
“We do have a few major concerns however. According to the information provided to us by the Khimrox, a majority of Aurum vessels contain some form of scionic crew complement. Under no circumstances unless express consent is given by the command admiral of the fleet are we to attack a vessel with the intent of destroying it. We must first weaken and disable the ship’s defensive systems before boarding and liberating the captives.”
“I know that this flies in the face of all conventional battle tactics, but this is no conventional enemy that we’re fighting here. If we do not adapt, we will fail and all of humanity will be forced into scionship.”
“Keep in mind, this is a very brief version of our prepared plan. Each and every aspect of it is subject to change. We
will discuss this in further detail later, but for now, that is all. Any further questions?” Once again, silence. “Very well then. This council session is now adjourned.”
Other than the shuffling of feet exiting, all was silent. We had known it was coming, but to hear it confirmed…
“Marcus.” The director approached, placing a heavy hand on my shoulder. “Go ahead and join Ambassador Aeax, why don’t you? Might help some of those Khimrox to see a human face that they’re familiar with.”
With a snappy salute, I responded with, “Yes sir.” His words were certainly a surprise, but a chance to join the Khimrox that had saved us was not one I would pass up easily. He may as well have just given me a week of leave considering the excitement that bubbled up within me.
Together, I and Saffan made our way to a nearby shuttle bay headed directly to the Khimroxian colony. Surprisingly, I hadn’t yet paid a visit to the settlement placed within the province of Hunan, but I had seen some images on several media platforms.
The trip was a quick one. Our transport plunged into the atmosphere, kicking up flames all around the outside of the cabin. Soon enough though, the flames of our descent died out and were replaced by the darkness of night.
Even with the slight turbulence, Saffan seemed deep in thought as his eyes stared at nothing in particular.
“Hey, you good?”
That seemed to snap him out of it. “Wha—oh yes, sorry.” A look of focus still remained on his face. For a moment, he continued in his silence before posing a question. “What if my people decide not to volunteer? This entire plan could fall through in an instant.”
“You don’t give your people enough credit, my feathered friend.” Saffan gave me a narrow-eyed look before letting out a cluck of a chuckle. “Redd was right in what he said. I’m sure your people will make the best choice for all of us.”
“For both our sakes, I can only hope that you’re right.”
Our Harpy gently sailed over mountains and treetops, slowly sinking to a stop within a secluded area of trees that were foreign to me.
Only I and Saffan left from the Harpy’s bay and stepped off onto the tarmac. Behind us, the cargo-door closed with a hiss. As we stepped out from underneath our cover, light droplets of water pattered against my skin.
Seconds later, the Harpy’s thrusters kicked in and the ship took flight. The heavy hum and glow of burning hydrogen accompanied the bird as it flew away. In mere moments, it was gone, though the distant
boom of it breaking the sound barrier was audible enough.
Looking around, I saw a few of my fellow men and women unloading supplies from a parked Harpy onto a militarily designed transport truck. Dimly lit orange lamps shone down and around us, illuminating nearby hangar bays with their closed doors and rounded ceilings of corrugated metal.
“Let’s get going. I’m sure you don’t want to stay in the rain long.” The rain was enough to notice, but it wasn’t unpleasant. I gave a brief nod and we set off on the nearby road.
Though clouds of rain covered us, the light of the moon joined us as we walked to the village. The setup looked pretty standard from what I knew of modular UEN architecture. It was clear however that great care had been put into its construction. The rain kept most of the residents indoors for the time being, but through the windows of nearby buildings, I saw the illuminated interiors of cozy hostels where families and friends gathered together.
We passed another Khimrox while wading through the rain—one who held its head and horns high, walking with a cheery gait despite the gloomy weather. Compared to the stale and oppressive atmosphere aboard the
Ignis, the settlement brimmed with life, even amidst the darkness of both night and storms.
Saffan led me forward to a quaint home with a metal awning that covered the railed porch. We walked up the steps and Saffan rapped on the door with his cobalt colored knuckles.
I hoped for Nia’s sake that her time away from the military had treated her well. Lord knows she deserved some respite. The door opened and Nia's face peeked out to greet us. “Saffan! Marcus! What are you two doing here?”
Saffan answered as I silently sat by. “Oh we were just passing through. Thought it might be a good idea to stop and pay you a visit.”
“Well don’t make yourself strangers. Come on in!” Saffan sat behind as I walked forward and gave his whole body a shake. Droplets flew from his body and slid off his slick feathers.
The home was a simple one, consisting of a main living room joined together with a kitchen. In the back of the home was a short hall leading to a middle door that stood between a pair of two others. In the living room, perched Tokieran, the same physician who had plunged into my mind to extract our language.
Immediately, he rose from where he rested and turned to face Saffan, “Captain!”
“Can’t be a captain without a ship, Toki.” The former captain waved away the words with a hand. “Saffan will do.”
“Oh. Uh, well, it's good to see you again, Saffan.”
“Likewise my friend. I’m certain you haven’t seen much of me considering your position during our time on the
Ignis. It’s a shame we didn’t brush wings more often. You seem like a fine fellow.”
As the two avians got to talking, Nia gave me a light punch on the shoulder. “So, how’ve things been going for you
admiral?” It was at this moment that I realized I was still in full military dress. Rather sheepishly, I pulled the hat from my head.
“Fine.” I muttered “You?”
A smile met her face. “Best I’ve felt since I enlisted.” She gave a look towards the two conversing Khimroxians. “It's still hard to believe any of this is real sometimes, ya know?”
I nodded. “Yeah. The
Challenger, the
Ignis, all of it. Feels like a dream now.”
Nia’s eyes stayed upon the owl-folk. “One of those dreams you don’t really want to wake up from.”
I gave a grunt of agreement. “I only wish all of the Khimroxians could share it with us.” This turned her towards me. Her smile curved down somewhat and she gave a slight nod.
What the hell. She’s going to learn it soon enough anyways. Rubbing the rim of my hat, I spoke softly. “Maybe soon, that will be possible.”
“What?”
“The council’s declared war.”
Her eyes snapped to mine, the smile fully gone. The room fell silent. I hadn’t hoped the others would hear me, but those Khimrox had an impeccable sense of hearing. I shouldn’t have expected any less from them.
All eyes turned to me. “The Aurum Alliance is a threat to humanity, the Khimrox, and all of the other scions that we haven’t even met yet. I think we both know this was inevitable”
“No, I get it, it's just… Wow.” The woman ran a hand through her black, tied-back hair as she heaved a sigh.
This facade dropped almost immediately and Nia’s mouth turned into a wonderfully devilish grin. After a few light chuckles, she said, “Better late than never I suppose. Those spineless sons-of-alien-bitches’ll never know what hit ‘em!”
The expressions on the faces of both Saffan and Tokieran showed no less resolve. Even the formerly jumpy physician proudly displayed a newfound sense of will. “The triumvirate operates under the expectation that we won’t fight back,” said Toki. “They see us as little more than animals and It's time we took full advantage of that fact.”
“Couldn’t have said it better myself,” remarked Saffan.
If these willing warriors were in any way representative of the entire Human-Khimroxian collective, the battle against these golden tyrants would be over before we knew it.

The Military is seeding the clouds in Colorado to preserve its most precious resources- hipsters and yuppies. After years of drought, and fears that the dry weather would evaporate the well-cultivated fields of hipsters and yuppies that is one of Colorado's well-known national treasures, the Pentagon sent a direct order to start seeding the clouds to retain the moisture and ensure the land livable for these precious resources for many years to come.

2023.06.04 19:17 Steve-SB Dubai or Germany for a Syrian Software Engineer
Hi everyone, I am a Syrian male (27y) living and working as a software engineer in Dubai for the past two years
So recently I got a job seeker visa to Germany and I cannot make up my mind on what to choose.. Should I leave what I have built here in dubai from connections to relationships and very good salary (around AED 18,000, which is euros 4500 nontaxable) or should I go to Germany and start from zero there..
The main idea and what causes my confusion is my current nationality.. As a Syrian I am always limited in my travel and career and I cannot go back to my country because of the war and the fact that I have mandatory military service there.. So Germany can provide me with a citizenship after 7 years whereas UAE is not stable and can always lose your job and get kicked out of the country
I know that for thr future Germany makes more sense but still is really difficult to leave the good salary behind and dive into the unknown and take the risk there just for the sake of the citizenship
Please give me advice and I do hope anyone with similar experience reads this and helps me decide on what to do
Thanks you all

2023.06.04 19:14 Enedave WHY YOU NEED VIDO-COIN
WHY YOU NEED VIDO-COIN
The history of money is still being written. The system of exchange has moved from swapping animal skins to minting coins to printing paper money, and today, we appear to be on the cusp of a massive shift to electronic transactions and cryptocurrencies like vido-coin.💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃
Ancient transaction forms have been co-opted: for example, bartering still occurs on the margins in some markets such as the business-to-business (B2B) space and some consumer services. 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈
The monetary system will surely continue evolving as long as humans require a medium of exchange. Soon enough we will see the complete integration of decentralized finance globally by nations of the world. Many Nations are already adopting cryptocurrency as a legal tender.🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷
Be wise today! Your savings account can't multiply your fund even if you don't touch it for the next three years. But investing same funds in crypto currency like VIDO-COIN in the said period of time will give you a fortune.🌹
Wise people are considered those who see opportunity when others are yet to see or fail to see it 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
VIDO-COIN will establish you Financially.🤸🤸🤸🤸🤸🤸🤸🤸🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴

2023.06.04 19:03 DougDante A father petitioned for custody of his child. The child was in danger in mom's custody, the authorities were aware of this danger, but they denied dad's petition for custody. The child later died in mom's custody.
A father petitioned for custody of his child. The child was in danger in mom's custody, the authorities were aware of this danger, but they denied dad's petition for custody. The child later died in mom's custody.
Here is my response in the hopes that it will help families who face injustices, and in the hopes that it will help parents to protect their children from child abuse.
I'm not an attorney and this is not legal advice.
You wrote about a father who wanted custody of his child, the child was in danger in mom's custody, the authorities were aware of this danger, and denied dad custody. The child later died in mom's custody. (Anonymized)
Judges often have judicial immunity for their decisions.
JUDICIAL IMMUNITY HAS BEEN EXPANDED TO INCLUDE JUDGES, TRADITIONAL QUASI-JUDICIAL INDIVIDUALS, AND SOME COURT-RELATED PERSONNEL, SUCH AS COURT CLERKS AND COURT REPORTERS
VARIOUS TYPES OF ACTS ARE NO LONGER RECOGNIZED AS JUDICIAL CONDUCT WITHIN THE PROTECTION OF IMMUNITY: (1) ACTS SHOWING LACK OF GOOD FAITH; (2) ACTS CRIMINAL IN NATURE; (3) ACTS IN ABSENCE OF AUTHORITY OR IN EXCESS OF JURISDICTION; AND (4) ACTS OF AN ADMINISTRATIVE OR MINISTERIAL NATURE.
OVERVIEW OF JUDICIAL IMMUNITY US Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs https://www.ojp.gov/ncjrs/virtual-library/abstracts/overview-judicial-immunity
It is often the case that judges rely on Title IV-D funded child support agency to exercise judicial authority to make custody recommendations. (They sometimes literally give the agencies rubber stamps and allow them to make orders).
Sometimes these agencies focus on their own financial interests or have sexist biases which can impact their recommendations and decisions.
Carol Rhodes is a whistleblower to described such wrongdoings:

Making child custody recommendations using these biases rather than the factors mandated by law knowingly or through negligence may be possible:
Fraud
Fraud is both a civil tort and criminal wrong.
In civil litigation, allegations of fraud might be based on a misrepresentation of fact that was either intentional or negligent. For a statement to be an intentional misrepresentation, the person who made it must either have known the statement was false or been as to its truth. The speaker must have also intended that the person to whom the statement was made would rely on it. The hearer must then have reasonably relied on the promise and also been harmed because of that reliance.
https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/fraud
Intentionally endangering the life of a child through fraud may be depraved indifference.
To constitute depraved indifference, the defendant's conduct must be 'so wanton, so deficient in a moral sense of concern, so lacking in regard for the life or lives of others, and so blameworthy as to warrant the same criminal liability as that which the law imposes upon a person who intentionally causes a crime.
https://definitions.uslegal.com/d/depraved-indifference/
Fraud or other felonies which cause the death of victim may be:
As of August 2008, 46 states in the United States had a felony murder rule,[18] under which felony murder is generally first-degree murder. In 24 of those states, it is a capital offense.[19] When the government seeks to impose the death penalty on someone convicted of felony murder, the Eighth Amendment has been interpreted so as to impose additional limitations on the state power. The death penalty may not be imposed if the defendant is merely a minor participant and did not actually kill or intend to kill. However, the death penalty may be imposed if the defendant is a major participant in the underlying felony and exhibits extreme indifference to human life.[20]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felony_murder_rule#United_States
Please note there is no statue of limitations on the crime of felony murder.
A social worker worker who may have knowingly or negligently manufactured a false child custody recommendation may be abusing that child. In so doing they are failing to report their own abuse, or if they are aware of it, the abuse of their coworkers, a crime.
A person who, while engaged in a professional capacity or activity described in subsection (b) of section 226 of the Victims of Child Abuse Act of 1990 on Federal land or in a federally operated (or contracted) facility, or a covered individual as described in subsection (a)(2) of such section 226 who, learns of facts that give reason to suspect that a child has suffered an incident of child abuse, as defined in subsection (c) of that section, and fails to make a timely report as required by subsection (a) of that section, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 1 year or both.
18 U.S. Code § 2258.Failure to report child abuse
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2258
The United States pays for the child support agencies under Title IV-D and that law requires protection of civil rights, including the rights of parents. Denying them those rights to get more federal funds is possibly defrauding the United States:
If two or more persons conspire either to commit any offense against the United States, or to defraud the United States, or any agency thereof in any manner or for any purpose, and one or more of such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.
18 U.S. Code § 371 - Conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud United States
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/371
If they are knowingly or negligently defrauding the public and the United States, it is also possible honest services fraud:
For the purposes of this chapter, the term “scheme or artifice to defraud” includes a scheme or artifice to deprive another of the intangible right of honest services.
18 U.S. Code § 1346.Definition of “scheme or artifice to defraud”
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1346
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honest_services_fraud
Possible criminal conspiracy against rights:
"If two or more persons conspire to injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him by the Constitution or laws of the United States, or because of his having so exercised the same; or"
18 U.S. Code § 241.Conspiracy against rights

Other possible federal crimes.
State child support, parenting time, and child protection, and elder abuse are all primarily funded under federal law Title IV-D and Title IV-E. Consider filing complaints.

Possible basis of a class action lawsuit for similar situated people:
WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF CLASS-ACTION LAWSUITS?
There are many cases and issues that can be brought as class-action lawsuits. Often, class actions fall into one of the following categories:
...
All parents who pary for any services, including recommendation services, parenting classes, etc which are offered under the deceptive pretext of allowing a parent worried about their abused child to enable them to have more time or custody with them in order to protect them, could form a class action lawsuit.
Consumer: These class actions hold accountable business entities who engage in systematic and fraudulent or illegal business practices that scam or harm the consumer. Examples include antitrust cases like price-fixing, market allocation agreements and monopolistic schemes.
All individuals denied employment, promotion, or who simply quits in disgust because their moral beliefs prevent them from participating in any deceptive acts or crimes could form a class action lawsuit.
Employment: Employees who have been discriminated against, employees with immigrant worker issues, workers who have hour and wage issues and employees who have on-the-job injuries or suffer because of employer safety violations can bring class-action lawsuits against employers.
https://www.hbsslaw.com/about/what-is-a-class-action-lawsuit
All parents and children who suffer as a consequence of deceptive acts or crimes could form a class action lawsuit:
CIVIL RIGHTS CLASS ACTIONS:
A SINGULARLY EFFECTIVE TOOL TO COMBAT DISCRIMINATION
For over 50 years, class actions have been among the most powerful tools to secure civil rights in America. Brown v. Board of Education, 1 which outlawed school segregation and set the stage for the entire civil rights movement, was a class action lawsuit. More recent examples include the case portrayed in the Hollywood movie “North Country,” based on the case Jenson v. Eveleth Mines and considered to be the first sexual harassment class action lawsuit.

Sincerely Ba-doh, ba-doh, ba-doh, ba-doh-ba Sincerely, oh yes, sincerely 'Cause I love you so dearly, please say you'll be mine -The Moonglows Part I - The End This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. If I keep saying it maybe it will be true. But it was happening. Tough times. Humpty Dumpty times. Out of gas in the desert with no bars times.
And, just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse than a Tijuana root canal; she walked in. Out of the sweltering Mexican heat, into the dim bar, she came; the only thing standing between me and the blinding light. I heard a couple of gunshots somewhere in the distance.
I still remember how the sun illuminated my 2pm rise and shine, shit-faced full of no caffeine afternoon after, hair of the dog; tequila shot and beer. Like I said, tough times on the Ponderosa, Hoss.
Every time I think of that moment, I stand transfixed in time. Unable to move, frozen in-place tighter than a suckered kid’s tongue to a Chicago lamppost in a February ice storm. Maggie had long ago won my heart’s devotion only to betray both me, and it, in ways still inconceivable to my sauce pan of a brain.
So, a couple of months ago, my life in post-apocalyptic ruin, I did what any red-blooded American would do; I flew across the border to CDMX to drown my sorrows in tequila and cheap living. And now, incomprehensibly, here she was; back, again like the September monsoon. Had the bitch air tagged me?
It seemed with Maggie my heart’s devotion was not enough. Everything she wanted and received soon became a dull knife; just ain’t cutting. Mags had to have it all, all the time. And I thought she had gotten all of me and more. Who’d think she’d want to pick at the carcass? But inexplicably, there she was like my constant migraine, the one that never really left the base of my skull.
Without a word Mags swooped in close like she missed me and now hadda kiss me.
Then, quicker than lightning showing off, she plunged her delicate-boned hand deep into my chest. She then removed it with even greater alacrity holding it high above her jet-black mane. She waved it for all the bar to see, my still beating corazón in it, color-coordinating against it’s will with her manicure, making what looked like vague Italian gestures.
Nobody in the bar paid us any mind.
I, on the other hand, couldn’t help but avert my horrified gaze into my now exposed chest cavity, only to witness darkness within darkness gazing back at me.
“
Heyyyyyy,” a voiceless voice greeted and saluted.
I looked up at Maggie. She took the seat opposite mine. Then reaching over with her free hand commandeered my tequila and knocked it back quick. Her encore was to grab my beer and drain it with all the mud she could muster into my eye. Then, with a satisfied look she dropped the now emptied bottle on the wooden table hard enough to make a thud.
Maggie then met my stare. My cardia beating peripatetically in her freshly manicured right-hand she made an elaborate shrug, her face smug as a tyrant’s fart.
I remembered wondering what the fuck was keeping my cardio so vascular. It sure as fuck wasn’t clean living. Then, that voiceless voice had yet more to say.
“Now what, Spenser?” it asked. Now, it was now my turn to shrug. Surprisingly, despite being a now certifiably heartless son of a bitch, I, too, had something to say. So, I said it.
“You’re fucking diabolical, Maggie.”
My words of judgment echoed clear, permeating deep into the abyss, then back again at Maggie. She caught my words easier than a kitten catches smiles. She just shrugged again. It was starting to get annoying.
“You ruined me,” I added just to be doing something.
The shrug undulated down from her tan and toned shoulder through her arm, finally coming to a full stop at her finger’s tips.
Waving my heart at me with more vague Italian gestures Mags asked, “How can you be so sure, Spenser?”
Part II – The Middle Sincerely, oh you know how I love you I'll do anything for you, please say you'll be mine ...
This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. My new mantra wasn’t working.
Six months ago, I thought Maggie was the answer to my dreams.
Swooping down like an angel to shower me with attention and affection. Dinners with wine. Hot sex. More hot sex. No strings attached. Getting to know you pillow talk.
Now, there’s one thing I need to add. I met her through a dating app but as it turned out we both worked for the same nonprofit. We didn’t know each other as it’s a fairly big company but it turned out I supported the code for both her projects. This turned out to be one of many coincidences.
We both hated our jobs. We both liked writing short stories but never could sell a thing despite writing dozens and dozens. We both could dance salsa, on 1 and 2 and loved to hablar en español que no era muy guapo.
We both wanted to run away to Mexico city and live the Bohemian life.
Coincidences like we both grew up in NYC and had issues with our respective families of origin. And while she was Chinese-American and I was Russian-American both our fathers were born in the same year and were obsessed with Woody Allen. We both had much younger siblings we didn’t speak to.
Yeah, we had both grown up with weak fathers and selfish narcissistic mothers in common. And worser still, we had both experienced unstable living situations in high school. In my case, I was kicked out of the house for smoking weed.
In Maggie’s case, I never really was sure what went down but the best I could get out of her was at 13 she got pissed at her mom for cheating on her dad and left the house with nowhere to go. She ended up with family friends or relatives but the details were always murky and I was not the nosey type.
Her words to me were, “My mother’s emotional IQ is low. I raised myself.”
Impressively, she had made it through the Ivy League and seemed to be someone down to earth I could spend time with. But truth be told from the minute I saw her profile picture I was hotter than a Texas chili sprout for her.
It was some kind of primal attraction I thought I was long past entertaining. It wasn’t lust. It wasn’t love. It was like the thought of coming home to a family I never knew I had or that even could exist.
This shit made old me feel like young me again. But, as oft is the case in life, there was a problem. I was old, broke and probably about to lose my job. I was in IT and I was having problems with my manager being a psychopath; for reals.
It wasn’t mere conjecture as he had a reputation of getting people fired, or worse, making their lives so miserable they would quit; even with no prospects. I had been the focus of his sabotaging efforts and it had been having a bad effect on my mental and physical well-being.
This had taken a turn for the worse and I was catching a lot of passive aggressive hostility on the project Maggie supported.
Anyway, she was the bright spot in my otherwise mostly solitary and emotionally bleak life. And she lived nearby. She had an ex and kids and shared custody but I never met them and she didn’t really talk much about it except to say once, “You should need a license to have kids.”
I never had quite known what to make of some of the things she said, but like I said, I was under her spell. And I liked it.
And the icing on top? I had a dominant kinky side and that was a fire Maggie poured gasoline on every chance she got. She was worse than an arsonist in Underoo Town.
One weird thing about Mags was her knitting habit. If we weren’t fucking or eating she was knitting. Even at restaurants and bars.
One day in November, with the sun golden in a sky so blue you thought you could touch it I asked, “What are you knitting?”
Maggie gave me a wry look. She got out of her chair and seemed to be examining my bald head which I had shaved just that morning.
“A hat,” she replied.
But as the holidays rolled around things started to change. One Sunday morning as we were having coffee Maggie looked around the crowded steamy café.
“Everybody’s hooking up for the holidays,” she remarked.
I didn’t really know what to do with that one so I let it be.
But as the days went on there was a change in the weather. Fewer texts. Less sex. Maggie going out of town to some vague destination. Sending me sexy pictures of herself in Santa outfits after I caught the flu during Christmas.
A few days after Christmas I got a text late one night.
“Is it okay if I come by?”
“Very okay,” was my reply.
Maggie showed up with chocolate, red wine and the hat she had been knitting. Orange Afghani wool softer than a golden retriever’s fur. She put the hat on my head and then removed all my clothes.
“Let’s celebrate Christmas, Spenser.”
And, we did.
When we were done and lying head-to-head, I said, “I love my hat.”
Maggie said, “I made it especially for you. No matter what, don’t lose it.”
It was another one of those weird Maggie things she said, like, “I used to shoplift,” and shit like that.
I nodded.
“Promise me you’ll hold on to your hat, Spenser.”
“I promise.”
Maggie observed my face, then nodded as if confirming something to herself.
“Okay.”
Then we did that thing again.
That was the pinnacle. Things quickly went downhill for no reason I could discern. Texts unanswered and when answered; kind of abrupt-like. Being unavailable. Stuff with her kids. Time away in Connecticut for some vague reason. After that I began feeling like the weakest card in a gambler’s hand.
But Maggie kept shoe horning me in at odd times, giving me just enough crumbs to keep me on the hook. And as we rode the roller coaster down everything always seemed to center around alcohol. And sex. More and more debauched sex. Finally, by New Year’s Eve things were getting straight-up weird no chaser.
“You know that thing we talked about?”
By her tone I knew what she meant. I nodded cautiously.
“You want to try it?”
Maggie dropped a smile on me that would have had the serpent in the garden applying for unemployment.
“Yes,” she said.
So, we did.
I thought I had been imagining things. I thought we were back at the pinnacle. I could feel the love drug course through my veins. Things couldn’t be better. Or, so I thought.
Oh Lord, won't you tell me why
I love that girlie so
The Following Monday
The next Monday I was called into what turned out to be the most fucking bizarre moment of my fifty-eight years on this planet; and I’ve had some bizarre fucking moments growing up in south Brooklyn in the 1970’s; believe you me.
The company’s CIO, compliance officer, head of legal, head of HR and my evil manager, Conte Rugen were all in attendance, cameras ROLLING.
It appears I was being dismissed after 8 years loyal service for sexual assault, extortion, harassment, hate speech, insults to farm animals and every fucking other offense against God and man one could commit in these holiest of holy United States of America.
And just who had I… who had I.. victimized? Who had I preyed upon? Harassed? Gone full nutso on?
Maggie.
They had the goods. Recordings. Video. Ropes. Whips. Chains. Bad Spanglish. Maggie screaming, “No, papi! No!!!!”
I believe I was, what is known in legal parlance as, summarily fucked.
Nobody wanted to hear my side. How things were taken out of context. Things we had mutually consented to out of exciting and bonding trust and exploration.
“Did I have consent agreement?” I parroted back in shock to the head of legal.
“Did you get one when you fucked your mother in the ass before she shat you out?” I added just to keep my mouth from puking.
I was in bombshell shock. Maggie was my angel. Our situationship was supposed to be fucking healing from our abused childhoods and here I am now some kind of Tarantinoesque, Mr. Fucking Rapist? And my fucking manager once bragging about throwing a cat out a window when he was a juvenile delinquent?!?
There would be charges pressed. I would need an attorney. I might be arrested.
And it all happened faster than you can say, “Blue Monday, How I hate Blue Monday”.
And then Maggie sued the company. Take no fucking prisoners, Maggie. Disco-fucking-inferno burn that mother down we don’t need no water let the motherfucker burn Maggie. I wondered if her ex had been left on food stamps after the divorce.
A few months and my life savings and retirement account after that the criminal case got pleaded down to misdemeanor assault and I was able to arbitrate with my employer and Maggie’s lawyer leaving me with some clothes, my passport and precisely enough plastic to fly into the sweltering Mexican heat. So, fly into it I did.
Part III – The Beginning Sincerely, oh you know how I love you I'll do anything for you, please say you'll be mine Oh Lord, won't you tell me why I love that girlie so She doesn't want me But I'll never never never never let her go ...
“I wish you’d stop waving that thing at me,” I said gesturing at my heart with my chin.
“You’re still upset,” Maggie said. It wasn’t a question.
“You fucking abused me. You fucking eviscerated me. Yeah, you could say I’m a little perturbed.”
“But you’re still wearing the hat,” she said smiling.
“It’s a bad ass hat,” I said. It was after all. Why cut off your nose to spite your face?
“I put a lot of time and thought into it,” she said. My heart continued to beat in her hand.
... Oh Lord, won't you tell me why I love that girlie so She doesn't want me But I'll never never never never let her go ... “Look,” she said waving my heart at me.
“I really wish you wouldn’t wave that around like that.”
The voice in the abyss in my chest spoke. It said, “Wait for it.”
Maggie said, “Spenser, you poor fucking sap. You hate your fucking job. You try to do the right fucking thing and speak up and you get kicked around like a dog. You try to love hard and you get beat up and left in an alley. You try to write books and start businesses and you end up bankrupt or dead.
And now look at you! You don’t have a care in the fucking world. You don’t have a shitty job. You are in beautiful Mexico City with the girl of your dreams. You say your heart was hardened? Well, I say it feels pretty fucking soft and sweet to me. Like the hat I knitted you. With the pom pom. And you know what?”
“What?” I heard myself murmur?
The abyss in my chest said, “Yeah, what?”
“Well, one the fucking pom pom has a beacon so I knew where you were the whole fucking time you sap. So I can tell you this true. And I will. So here I am in fucking Mexico sweating my tits off. And I am telling you this," she said nodding at my cardio, "is a very good heart. And I am putting it back where it belongs.
There is nothing wrong with it and now nobody can hurt it again. And if you want to write a book now you have something, and someone,” she added with a wry smile, “to write about.”
Then lightning quick Maggie put it back in my chest and removing her hand made a quick flourish gesturing for the waitress.
“Botella de tequila, por favor!”
I looked down at my chest. Everything seemed to be the way it had been before she ripped out my heart. Only different.
I was about to speak. Maggie raised a hand.
The waitress appeared like a wraith and put down a bottle of Don Julio and two fresh shot glasses and two cold ones.
Maggie poured two shots and pushed one at me with the hand that had been holding my cardio captive. She then fished around in her pocket and found her phone.
“What the fuck, right," that's what your thinking, Spenser. Yeah, what the fuck is right. Look at this baby boy,” she said and then pushed her phone next to the shot glass.
I was looking at what appeared to be a bank balance that appeared ready, willing and able to face fuck an extraordinarily tall giraffe. I felt the migraine disappear like a bad dream.
Maggie gave me a wry smile.
She pushed the shot glass closer to me and picked hers up. I felt my elbow bending. It felt okay.
She tilted her shot at me and said, "Here's looking at you, kid," and took the shot. I drank mine.
We put our glasses down.
“You can negotiate anything," she said, then added, "sincerely.”
And then, then she kissed me.
Oh say you'll be mine Oo-eee, oo-eee-oo, ooi-ooi-ooo Sincerely submitted by

Hey heat Nation. Long time lurker but wanted to get a discussion going about one of our players currently on the bench. Our big man project of Yurtseven. He dominated the Gleague in most of his showings. He then proved to be at least serviceable during the stretch we lost Bam due to surgery('21 season?) I know going into this year a lot of people were hyped on Yurt and Bam playing on the floor together but then Yurt got the ankle injury/surgery and has ridden the bench except for garbage time. I'm not some arm chair coach demanding Spo play him. More just curious if the fanbase forgot him or if he was only serviceable during like covid seasons? Do we think he is still just not in game shape? I remember hearing that his conditioning and weight were issues in college. I just love the idea of another big body to just battle with jokic and let Bam roam kinda like brook and Giannis. Thoughts? Insights?

2023.06.04 17:57 thatoddtetrapod Cold writing professors looking for undergraduate research opportunities. Proofread my first email?
Hey all. I'm transferring to a university to complete my bachelors, and was hoping to participate in some undergrad research. I had been planning to write some cold emails to professors asking for opportunities, as it's how one of my professors recommended for me if I wanted more lab experience, but now I've learned that I would be able to complete and accelerated master's program if and only if I get into an undergrad research lab basically the first semester I start (next fall), so now it's super important! Anyways, I wrote a cold email to a profressor, but I really have no idea if I'm saying the right things. Could anyone proofread it? Pasted below:
Hello Dr Ramsey! My name is David Carpenter. I just recently completed my associates degree and am transferring to CU Boulder to Major in the Ebio program, with a minor in MCDB and completing the GIS certificate program as well. I saw you are hosting the new series of Crashcourse Biology, and when I heard you teach at CU Boulder I was immediately excited that I might get a chance to work or study with you one day! I read a little bit about your work in entomology, in particular your work with bees and the parasite Varroa. I have always loved biology, and in particular, always had a soft spot for insects and arachnids of the world. Especially the eusocial insects (and eusocial spiders as well) have always fascinated me! Both from a conceptual standpoint (how can so many organisms be organized so well??) as well as an environmental perspective (the importance of bee populations as pollinators is of course very well known).
Anyways, the reason I’m reaching out to you is because I was wondering if you would know of any undergraduate research opportunities I might participate in? As I finished my associates degree at community college, I participated in a few CURE labs, including the CU Boulder Apple Tree project collecting some phenology data on local apple trees, and the Small World Initiative which investigates soil samples for bacteria producing novel antibiotic compounds. I’ve loved participating in these, and feeling like a real scientist, and now I’m hungry for more. I have done some scientific and science-related work in non-academic contexts, collecting vegetation impact data during an internship with the US Forest Service, as well as work to prevent the spread of Quagga mussels with the National Park Service and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (although that was much more science education/communication then science per se). I also will be starting a Pathways internship with the EPA in Denver which will involve mostly biology field and lab work. Yet I still want to get more science experience, field or lab based, on the academic side of things to round out what experience I’m able to cultivate in the remainder of my undergrad.
I also have been interested in the ebio accelerated master’s program, which would be a huge boon to my career and sounds like something I would be a strong candidate for. I am eager for the challenge, and I think I’m up to it. I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but I’ve done very well in my past 2 years of undergrad, keeping a 3.93 GPA and performing at or near the top of my class in many of my courses. An accelerated masters is just what I need. But, as my advisor told me, since this program was not generally designed for transfer students, I’m effectively starting a year late, and it will only be possible for me to complete this if I am able to get undergraduate research experience this next year. Do you know of any opportunities I might be able to participate in?
Yours in science,
David Carpenter

2023.06.04 17:49 Edward_Stivenson Importance and Benefits of Studying Abroad
| Are you intrigued by the idea of forming friendships with people from all over the world, immersing yourself in a foreign language, or gaining familiarity with diverse educational systems? If so, the exceptional opportunity of participating in a semester abroad through various exchange programs could be the perfect choice for you. In this article, our essay writer online will provide you with valuable insights into the significant benefits of studying abroad. Our aim is to offer you the necessary information to make the most of your time abroad as an international student. Continue reading to discover - what is studying abroad? - and why it is crucial for students to embrace this unique opportunity with enthusiasm at least once in their lifetime. How Does Studying Abroad Work: Tips for Your Journey Many students often find themselves unsure of where to begin their study abroad journey. This is primarily due to limited access to information about study abroad programs, which often go unnoticed by young individuals. However, you've come to the right place to gain a general understanding of the journey that study abroad students embark upon. Who knows, you might be the next one in line to have an incredible overseas experience. So, how does studying abroad work? To be completely honest, the process can be quite lengthy and challenging. However, it is undeniably one of the most rewarding ways to undergo life-changing experiences and foster academic and personal growth, especially during your early twenties. Those who have studied abroad can attest to this. Rest assured; we are here to serve as your study abroad advisor, providing guidance and support for your benefit. https://preview.redd.it/cryo4czcs04b1.png?width=1180&format=png&auto=webp&s=a63bf808abf10c315d74bbdffb298825a62e7779 Prepare for Your Study Abroad Journey Let's start by answering the 'What does studying abroad mean?'. It is designed for students to pursue higher education studies or conduct research in their field of study in a foreign country for a specific period of time. Throughout the preparation process for your study abroad journey, there are certain unavoidable steps to follow. However, there's no need to fear. The preparation process should fill you with excitement as you anticipate the new friends you will make, the traditional dishes you will taste, and other studying abroad benefits like the personal growth that comes from stepping out of your comfort zone. - Begin the preparation process with thorough research on the country you'll be heading to. You can start by reaching out to the study abroad office at your home university, where they can provide you with a list of potential destinations based on your major program and interests.
- Truly experiencing a different culture requires actually visiting the host country. However, you can still research and familiarize yourself with the culture and customs of your destination beforehand. Learning about traditions, cultural norms, local laws, and other specific aspects of a foreign country can help ease your adjustment process.
- Another important aspect to consider is organizing your finances. Many study abroad programs offer monthly scholarships to assist students. However, there may be some expenses related to formal documents before your departure. If your scholarship doesn't fully cover your needs, you might want to consider taking on a part-time job.
- Lastly, it's crucial to be aware that each study abroad program has its own specific requirements for necessary documents. However, having a national ID and a passport is essential. Make sure to check the expiration dates of these documents and ensure they won't expire soon.
Select the Right Studying Abroad Programs Expanding your horizon begins with the academic semester abroad. One can only develop maximum potential in themselves once one decides to grow out of their local culture and learn about the world through experience. In order to make your study abroad experience fruitful and beneficial for your future career, you need to make the right selection of the program. The right selection depends on your field of study. For instance, taking advantage of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program would be an excellent idea if you are a student of Social and Political Sciences. Do not miss the chance to learn the local language since German is the second most spoken language throughout the institutions of the European Union. So, spend quality time identifying your academic goals and interests in order to find matching programs. Keep in mind that study abroad students invest a lot of time and energy into the selection of the right programs, which comes with its own costs. Therefore, research the chosen program in depth in order to clarify its reputation and accreditation. The Future Leaders Exchange Abroad (FLEX) program is designed for high school students across the USA. The latter gives a chance to American high school students to study for an academic year in Georgia, Kazakhstan, or Poland. If you are prone to jumping out of your comfort zone and discovering less developed parts of the world, this might as well be a chance for you. If you want to spend the summertime productively, applying for summer studying abroad programs might be the best solution. Make the most out of your study abroad trip with CEA Study Abroad in Aix en Provence, or spend sweet summer days under the Tuscan sun with USAC in Italy. Discover more opportunities below. What are Some Scholarships for Studying Abroad? Again, finances can be a major determining factor in the process of selecting a study abroad program destination. That is why you need to be aware of all the possibilities that grant students scholarships in order to afford to study and live in a foreign country. International organizations and governments are working actively in order to make funds available for students of all origins to study at the desired university, at least for a short period of time. The University Study Abroad Consortium (USAC), as mentioned above, provides the most widespread scholarships for studying abroad. The consortium makes the selection of students who are enrolled in USAC study abroad programs at the undergraduate level of studies and provides them with a significant amount of funds if they showcase special financial needs. SIT Study Abroad scholarships are available for students who demonstrate academic excellence with a desire to expand their knowledge in their fields of study. SIT finances housing accommodation and tuition fees for selected students. One of the most feminine-friendly scholarships for studying abroad is known under the name of Corinne Jeannine Schillings Scholarships. The latter provides specific types of scholarships under the range of Silver and Gold for young girl scouts throughout their undergraduate studies. American and Canadian students specializing in the program of Informational technologies are privileged to have an opportunity to take advantage of the Generation Google Scholarship. This project aims to fund studies abroad for future leaders in the technology industry. Make the Most of Your Study Abroad Experience The true studying abroad meaning reflects through activities students choose to participate in. Making the most out of your experience abroad will turn it into one of the most memorable periods of your life. Taking some time off and having fun is the primary 'requirement' for exchange students. Although, many study-abroad students rather choose to enrich their resumes with participation in valuable projects, conferences, and workshops. Do not shy away from expressing yourself in academic or informal spaces because of the language barrier. Instead, try to act like local students and get engaged in classes and coursework. That way, you will stand out in front of foreign professors and demand a recommendation letter from them at the end of the exchange semester. Use your leisure for the discovery of local cuisine as well as cultural places and attractions. For instance, if you find yourself in a central European country such as Poland, do not leave it without tasting piquant Pierogi or exploring old town squares in its small and aesthetic cities. Usually, joining clubs and participating in extracurricular activities gives international students a great chance to network with locals. These types of activities simplify the process of making friends with local as well as other international students. One of the benefits of studying abroad that is also worth highlighting is its overall purpose of helping students grow professionally as well as personally. Grab each chance to spend time with local friends and other students in general in circumstances that are not usually provided in your home country. Maximize Language Learning Learning a local language is at the top of the list in the study abroad checklist. Since Chinese proverbs are known for their practicality and wisdom, we would like to recall one of them regarding immersing oneself in the local language: 'To learn a new language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.' Learning basics and interacting in the local language will help you perceive the culture of the host country from a clear perspective. The decision to travel to a foreign country to get a high-quality education already speaks for your open-mindedness. So, why not make the best out of your studying abroad experience and learn the language as a bonus? If you have already participated in the studying abroad program, feel free to use our speech writing services to curate a creative narrative to wrap up your experience for a big audience. Build International Connections Being a study abroad student already makes you stand out from locals at the host university. Try to use the attention for your benefit and build connections with as many people as you can. People are the most beautiful part of each and every event we experience in life. That goes especially for your study abroad experience. The opportunity to make friends through networking with fellow students and locals is one of the exceptional studying abroad benefits. Try to keep up with the current events taking place locally in the country of your destination or around the world in general. That will provide you with a plethora of topics to talk about in a conversation with professors, mentors, or fellow students. Building relationships with people around will undoubtedly enrich your personal as well as academic growth. 2023.06.04 17:47 bingo0619 Mediterranean Shore Excursions, Celebrity Infinity
Just got back from 11-day Mediterranean cruise on Celebrity Infinity. Thought I would share what we did and what learned and liked since this gets asked about a lot. Hope it's helpful :)
FYI-We prefer doing food and wine activities over sightseeing and touristy stuff, I will try to add things I heard from other passengers re: things we did not do. I am going to put he tour provider for each excursion for those who might want to book direct. Also, we sacrifice cabin class for good food and more expensive excursions to stay within our budget.
Barcelona- We embarked here and spent a few days prior. We were not prepared for the jet lag as we flew overnight and had one quick layover. We arrived midday and napped, but our schedules were off. I would recommend trying to stay up as long as you can and sleep at night, your normal time. Barcelona is seven hours ahead of the Midwest, where we live. Nevertheless, we rallied our middle-aged asses and had and an amazing time.
I pre purchased skip the line tickets for La Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell on separate days. We went at our scheduled time and did not wait. We stayed on Las Ramblas and took cabs there and walked back. Many people did hop on/off and that worked well. We also went to La Boqueria Market and bought little things from many stands and sampled a lot. Very fun and cool experience. Did a DYI tapas tour I put together on my own from just research. We did not know this, but Elton John was performing when were there and we got to go, which was amazing! Coldplay was also performing there so the city was crowded.
We stayed on Las Ramblas, which was close to the port, but I would recommend staying more inside the city. Our hotel was okay, clean, but not many amentities. Suited our purposes, but was loud some nights. Cabs and food are relatively cheap and easy.
Day 2- Marseille- We did a walking food tour through Shore Excursions Group since the Celebrity one was sold out. This was operated by a company called Do Eat Better Experience. There were six of us, the other 4, not on cruise. Was a four-hour tour and worth it. Went to places I would not have known about. Guide was ok, but not very interactive. We had a great time with the other couples.
We got off early to walk around before the tour which met at 11:30. However, shops and cafe's do not open up till later. I would recommend sleeping later and going into port later, if you dont have an excursion booked. By the time our excursion was over, the towns were buzzing. We took a cab from the port and back, but you can take a bus or shuttle, I believe. Very nice day.
Day 3-Nice (Villefranche)- We did a tour through Celebrity, called Destination highlights, Nice and St. Paul de Vence Village. This was operated by Intercruises Shoreside and Port Services. We tendered super quickly. This was great day and included a lunch at a Michelin starred restaurant and a wine tasting at Cave Bianchi in Nice. We also had plenty of free time to explore each place. The formula 1 racing was in Monoco so there were Ferrari's, Lambo's and other racecars all over the place. We were allowed to look and take pics which was cool.
The lunch and wine tasting were phenomenal. The beach at Nice was gorgeous and if we would have known we would have brought our bathing suit and towels to go there, rather than walk around in the town. You can easily take a cab there and go on your own without doing an excursion. This was an all-day tour. So were back on the ship in time to relax and eat in MDR and chill for the night. It was a great, great day. I will say the people and guides were not as friendly and helpful as in other places, but it's not really an issue and doesn't ruin anything, we just didn't expect it. Our guide in Nice as a little on the unprofessional side, but, to each their own.
Day 4-Florence/Pisa (La Spezia), Italy- We booked a tour through Celebrity called, Destination Highlight: Coast of Cinque Terre and Portovenere, operated by Aloschi Brothers. Our guide was absolutely incredible, probably the best one we have had. her name was Duna in case you ever do this privately. We had individual small receivers and ear buds so we could hear her perfectly. We started in Portovenere where there is the famous Church of San Pietro. Just amazing and stunning views. The town is charming, and we walked and sampled. Did not buy much, just some food to take home.
We then took a boat ride up the coast and ended at the last of the Cinque Terre Villages, Monterosso. I am so glad did this over the three-village tour by bus. The boat ride up the coast was just amazing, and I assume this villages were similar. Gorgeous village. Rather than fight the crowd we hiked up a steep hill to the just incredible Porto Roco hotel and ate an incredible seafood and pasta lunch. The views were fabulous, and we had it to ourselves. Great meal. There is also a small, but beautiful beach at Monterosso you can hang out on. This was our favorite day.
We did the Chef's table on Celebrity that night which was otherworldly. A lot of eating and drinking this day. Incredible day!
Day 5- Rome (Civitavecchia) We were never going to Rome, no desire to travel there and deal with the crowds. I booked a private car from We Love Italy to go wine tasing in Tuscany. We had a husband-and-wife couple, Paulo and Nicola driving us, and it was great. They were absolutely lovely, and it was a pleasure and privilege to be with them, so kind and generous. They have an open invitation to stay with us if they ever visit. They also took us to a village and beach in Capalbio and for lunch in Manciano-Saturina. Again, amazing food and wine. The boat left late so we had lots of time.
I heard Rome was not as crowded as some thought and some of our shipmates actually got a glimpse of the Pope at the Vatican, which is so special.
Day 6-at Sea- up by 7 :( and got a spot and the hot tubs after breakfast. Stayed by the pool most of morning, it was great weather. Lots of activities to do but we chilled. We did the Mixology class offered by Celebrity which was a blast. We were bartenders at Martini bar for a few hours learning to make and serve cocktails. So, so fun and crew and guests were great.
Day 7- Valletta, Malta: We did an excursion from Celebrity called, Destination Highlight: Seaside towns of Vittoriosa and Marsaxlokk. Operated by Sam Mifsud and Sons. The tour was so so, the best part being a trip for wine and food tasting. Do you guys sense a pattern? It was rather boring, I should have researched better on this one. The fishing village, Marsaxlokk was a basic tourist trap with a makeshift market and nothing open. Vittoriosa was nicer and where the restaurant was. They did set up a nice area and what was served was good. I think doing more on your own or going to Gozo or Limoncello tasting would be good. I looked after and there are some excursions that looked way better.
Day 8-at Sea- Very chill day. We did the Blendique Wine Class and the World Wine Tasting which we have done before. Both super fun with great people and crew. We did not eat much or go to pool.
Day 9- Santorini, Greece-We did an excursion through Celebrity called, Small Group Discoveries: Island Wine Tasting Experience, operated by Rhapsody Travel. Tendering ashore was organized and quick. Went to three wineries on the island and had food at each. Also visited black sand beach and red sand beach. the latter of which was spectacular. Very nice tour with not a lot of people. This also included our cable car tickets down. We ate lunch at a restaurant on the water, which I forgot the name, but it was good. There were 8 other ships there, so it got crowded, we left after lunch and waited a very reasonable hour for the cable cars down to the tender spot. Up tp this point it was nice day.
Due to something very upsetting I witnessed in the town, not cruise related, I will never, never, ever step foot on Santorini again. Not necessary to discuss as it was personal to me, and I don't want to cloud anyone else's experience or opinion.
We watched the famous sunset from the top deck and it did not disappoint. We avoided the very long lines to get back to ship at night.
Day 10-Mykonos, Greece: We did a Celebrity excursion called, Small Group Discoveries: Mykonian Cooking Experience, operated by Rhapsody Travel. People, I cannot tell you how great this was. We went to a private home or spiti. There 14 of us. Teta was our host and the home own. So gracious and generous. We learned so much and all interacted and prepared an authentic lunch and sat down to eat. She prepared dessert as well. It was around 4 hours. She was incredibly gracious and generous. Probably the second-best day we had. One of the best excursions we have ever done. I would do it again for sure.
We walked around Mykonos after and had ANOTHER lunch at a restaurant called Promenade that was great. Very fresh seafood and authentic food. This a was very nice town, we loved it. There was a very small church with a blue dome, (others had different colors) that was open and it was beautiful inside. It was right by the water. I'm not Greek orthodox or even religious, but I got chills. I small prayer of thanks to my G-d for giving me this experience. I would 100% come back to Mykonos.
We bought beautiful piece of art from a local artist and owned studio called, Triciclo. It was really our only big purchase. We don't really but T-shirts, magnets, etc.
Day 11-Athens: I had transfer and we went right home. :(
This was a beautiful, beautiful cruise. I could not have asked for better experiences.
Celebrity tendering was fast and organized and easy. This who had excursions at applicable ports met and left by group with 30 minutes of docking. Those who had tickets to tender without a Celebrity excursion got called overhead by group and left from a different deck, also fast.
Quite a few of the guide said Celebrity tender the quickest and best. They mentioned other line by name that were not good, but I don't be negative or worry someone else, so I won't mention specifics.
My other suggestion for Celebrity would be to pick excursions that are "Small Group Discoveries", or "Destination Highlights". These seemed to be a better experience.
Happy and safe cruising everyone!!

This is an ultra-ambitious company with a track record that holds up well. Generally speaking, black gold is becoming increasingly scarce, and the price of drums is skyrocketing.
