A room had been hired at the Shelbourne Hotel, and the mornings were spent writing
The Bending of the Bough It could be finished in the next three weeks if I fortuned upon somebody who could explain the various sections and parties in Irish politics, all striving for mastery at that time; somebody acquainted enough with the country to unravel the Lord Castletown incident, and expound the Healy problem, the O'Brien problem, the Redmond problem, and the great many other political problems with which the play is beset.
There is little use in writing when there is no clear vision in the mind; the pen stops of its own accord, and I often rose from my chair and walked about the room, my feet at last finding their way through the hotel, and down the street as far as the Kildare Street Club, to ask Edward if he would tell me. He would tell me nothing. His present to the Irish Literary Theatre was his play, and I was free to alter it as I pleased, putting the last act first and the first act last, but he would not help me to alter it; and it was impossible not to feel that it was reasonable for him to refuse.
What do you think of the title—
The Bending of the Bough?
The Tale of a Town is a better title. And after some heated words we left the Club one evening together. You must sign the play, he said, turning suddenly.
I sign the play! I answered, all my literary vanity ablaze. No; but I'll put adapted from.
I'll have no adaptations; I'll have nothing to do with your version; and he wrenched himself free from me, leaving me to go my way, thinking that here was nothing for it but to sign a work that was not mine. I, too, am sacrificing to Cathleen ni Houlihan; one sacrifice brings many. And to escape from the hag whom I could see wrapped in a faded shawl, her legs in grey worsted stockings, her feet in brogues, I packed my trunk and went away by the mail-boat laughing at myself, and at the same time not quite sure that she was not still at my heels. Cathleen follows her sons across the seas; and she did not seem to be very far away in the morning in Victoria Street, while Edward's play was before me. After writing some lines of vituperation quite in the Irish style, I would lay down the pen and cry: Cathleen, art thou satisfied with me? And it seemed an exquisite joke to voice Ireland's woes, until one day I stopped in Ebury Street, abashed; for it was not a victory for our soldiers that I desired to read in the paper just bought from the boy who had rushed past me, yelling News from the Front, but one for the Boers. The war was forgotten, and I walked on slowly, frightened lest this sudden and inexplicable movement of soul should be something more than a merely accidental mental vacillation.
It may be no more, and it may be that I am changing, I whispered under my breath; and then, charging myself with faint-heartedness and superstition, I walked on, trying to believe that I should be myself again next morning.
It was a bad sign to lie awake all night, thinking of what happened in Ebury Street the evening before, and asking if I really did desire that the Boers should win the fight and keep their country; and it was a worse sign to read without interest headlines announcing a forward movement of our troops. On turning over the pages, a rumour (it was given as a rumour) that the Boers were retreating northward caught my eye; the paper was thrown aside, and an hour was spent wondering why the paper had been tossed aside so negligently. Was it because I had become, without knowing it, Pro-Boer? That was it, for next morning, on reading that five hundred of our troops had been taken prisoners, I was swept away by a great joy, and it was a long time before I could recover sufficient calm of mind to ask myself the reason of all this sympathy for illiterate farmers speaking a Dutch dialect in which no book had yet been written; a people without any sentiment of art, without a past, without folklore, and therefore, in some respect, a less reputable people than the Irish. I had seen some finely designed swords in the Dublin Museum, forged, without doubt, in the late Bronze Age, and Coffey had shown me the splendid bits that the ancient Irish put into their horses' jaws. There was the monkish Book of Kells, a beautiful thing in a way; the Cross of Cong was made in Roscommon, and by an Irish artist; it bears the name of its maker, an Irish name, so there can be no doubt as to its nationality. There are some fine legends, the rudiments of a literature that had not been carried into culture, the Irish not being a thinking race ... perhaps.
After that I must have fallen into a deep lethargy. On awakening, I remembered the autumn evening in Edward's park, when Cathleen ni Houlihan rose out of the plain that lies at the foot of the Burran Mountains, and came, foot-sore and weary, up through the beech-grove to me. I had not the heart to repulse her, so hapless did she seem; nor did I remember the danger of listening to her till I had stood before Edward telling him the story of the meeting in the park.
It is dangerous, I had said to him, to listen to Cathleen even for a moment; she has brought no good luck or good health to any one.
The morning paper was picked up from the hearthrug, and the news of the capture of our troops read again and again, the same thrill of joy coming into my heart. The Englishman that was in me (he that wrote
Esther Waters) had been overtaken and captured by the Irishman. Strange, for all my life had been lived in England. When I went to Ireland I always experienced a sense of being a stranger in my own country, and, like many another Irishman, had come to think that I was immune from the disease that overtakes all Irishmen sooner or later—that moment in Edward's park was enough for me, and ever since the disease had been multiplying in secret: the incident in Ebury Street was only a symptom.... A moment after I was asking myself if the microbe were sown that evening in Edward's park, or if the introduction of it could be traced back to the afternoon in Victoria Street, when Edward and Yeats had called to ask me to join in their attempt to give a National Literary Theatre to Ireland. It might be traced further back still, to the evening in the Temple when Edward had told me that he would like to write his plays in Irish; and there arose up in me the memory of that midnight when I wandered among the courts and halls, dreaming of Ireland, of the story of wild country life that I might write.
It was then that I caught the disease, I said; a sort of spiritual consumption; it was then that the microbe first got into my soul and ate away most of it without my being aware of its presence, or of the ravages caused by it, until the greater part of me collapsed in Ebury Street.
And what was still more serious was that out of the wreck and rubble of my former self a new self had arisen. It could not be that the old self that had worshipped pride, strength, courage, and egoism should now crave for justice and righteousness, and should pause to consider humility and obedience as virtues, and might be moved to advocate chastity tomorrow. Such a thing could not be. A new self had grown up within me, or had taken possession of me. It is hard to analyse a spiritual transformation; one knows little about oneself; life is mysterious. Only this can I say for certain, that I learnt then that ideas are as necessary to us as our skins; and, like one that has been flayed, I sat wondering whether new ideas would clothe me again, until a piece of burning coal falling from the grate into the fender awoke me from my reverie. When I had put it back among the live embers, I said: My past life crumbles away like that piece of coal; in a few moments it will be all gone from me, and my new self will then be alone in me, and powerful enough to lead me into a new life. Into what life will it lead me? Into what Christianity?
I wandered across the room to consult the looking-glass, curious to know if the great spiritual changes that were happening in me were recognisable upon my face; but the mirror does not give back characteristic expression, and to find out whether the expression of my face had changed I should have to consult my portrait-painters: Steer, Tonks, and Sickert would be able to tell me. And that night at Steer's, after a passionate protest against the wickedness and the stupidity of the Boer War delivered across his dining-table, I got up and walked round the room, feeling myself to be unlike the portraits they had painted of me, every one of which had been done before the war. The external appearance no doubt remained, but the acquisition of a moral conscience must have modified it. As I was about to launch my question on the company, I caught sight of the little black eyes that Steer screws up when he looks at anything; all the other features are insignificant; the eyes are all that one notices, and the full, sleek outlines of the face. His shoulders slope a little, like mine, and the body is long, and the large feet shuffle down the street in goloshes if the weather be wet, and in the studio in carpet slippers. Long white hands droop from his cuffs—hands that I remember carrying canvases from one easel to another. Tonks is lank and long in every limb, and one remembers him as a herring-gutted fellow, with a high bridge on his nose; and one remembers him much more for the true, honest heart that always goes with his appearance. I could see that he sympathised with the Boer women and children dying in concentration camps, and that Steer was thinking of the pictures he had brought home from the country. It was shameful that any one should be able to think of pictures at such a time, but Steer takes no interest in morals; his world is an external world; and I abandoned myself somewhat cowardly to his pictures till the end of the evening, thinking all the while that Tonks would understand my perplexities better, and that the time to speak to him would be when we walked home together.

2023.04.02 09:07 -Bonjour-- Corse, je t'aime
We have been to Corsica several times, and there are several ways to travel to Corsica by ferry: We went to Nice, took the afternoon ferry and were in Bastia in the evening. The next time we took the night ferry from Savona and arrived in Bastia the next morning. And we also went to Livorno once, took the early morning ferry and were in Bastia by noon.
From Bastia, we first headed north on a 110 km coastal road with small villages and breathtaking views. First we came to ERBALUNGA with its massive tower on a rock by the sea has a picturesque location. Then we passed Maccinaggio, Cap Corse, Centuri-Port - a small romantic fishing port and center of lobster fishing - and continued via Pino to Nonza.
In NONZA the houses cluster around a rock that rises 160 m from the sea. We walked up to the Tour Pouline - a fortified tower from the 16th century. From there you can see the black beach, which makes a great contrast to the turquoise sea.
After we had explored the north, we drove from Bastia down the whole east coast - we made a stop at Moriani Plage with a beautiful sandy beach - to Porto Vecchio.
PORTO VECCHIO has a fantastic location and has a lively old town: the Genoese fortress from 1539 is situated on a hill. Porto Vecchio is the third largest city of Corsica, besides the flourishing tourism there is still the traditional salt mining and other trades especially in the suburbs. The malaria mosquitoes were wiped out in the 1950s, so that even in this area could be built without further ado. The old town consists of only four longitudinal and ten transverse streets, it is closed to traffic in the summer. At the Place de la République people like to drink their Pastis or Kir in the evening. In the old town there are many restaurants in various price ranges and boutiques partly with typical products of the country.
Many people come to Porto Vecchio for its beautiful beaches. BENEDUTTU PLAGE - a long fine sandy beach with a view of Punta di Chiappa and also of Porto Vecchio. A part of PLAGE CALA ROSSA is occupied by a luxury hotel, therefore the fine beach is accessible only from the western side. PALOMBAGGIA PLAGE with white sand and turquoise calm water - one of the most beautiful beaches of Corsica - is surrounded by red rocks. At ST. GUILIA PLAGE some hotels are settled in the meantime. Thus, the once paradisiacal bay has now become more of a commercial place. But the beach is still wonderfully bright and the water crystal clear. RODINARA PLAGE - a dreamlike round bay - one of the most beautiful of Corsica. Once only a dirt road led to the lagoon. Since a real road was built, this bay is very busy in the season.
From Porto Vecchio we made a tour to COL DE BAVELLA (1218 m high) - an impressive landscape. There are good hiking trails, e.g. to the Cumpudella (Trou de la Bombe), a huge hole in the rock face, where you are rewarded with an incredible view after a scramble. In season, of course, it is very busy there, and the "real" hikers come as early as possible in the morning.
Near the small village of L'Ospedale is the drinking water reservoir BARRAGE DE L'OSPEDALE. From there you can hike up to the 70 m high waterfall Piscia di Gallo - but it is more worthwhile in spring, when there is still enough water.
From Porto Vecchio we went on to BONIVACIO, one of the great attractions in Corsica - despite the many visitors. The upper town, where we stayed, is built on a 60 m high chalk rock plateau and still has a historical structure. We could see all the way to Sardinia from our hotel - it was beautiful weather.
The harbor is at the end of the long, narrow inlet. From there it is best to make a tour on foot. From the fortress walls you have a fantastic view of the city, the coast and the sea and all the way to Sardinia. On the harbor promenade there is a sea aquarium in a natural grotto. The shore road leads to the fishing port and the ferry port,
The upper town is reached through the 16th century Porte de Gênes. From the Jardin des Vestiges one has the most beautiful view over the harbor. It is hard to walk from the lower town to the upper town, because it is quite steep and with many stairs.
The journey continued to the extreme southwest, the land of blood vengeance - still until 1840. SARTÈNE - the "most Corsican of all Corsican towns" - is an interesting old town, which is virtually stuck on a rock. Almost no ray of sunlight reaches the winding narrow streets, and the narrow multi-story houses sometimes have window holes like sinister defense towers. The center of the old town is the Place de la Libération with some restaurants where you can sit outside and enjoy your drink.
From Sartène we drove to PROPRIANO. This place was discovered late by the tourists, there is a nice promenade between the marina and the pier, where it is lively especially in the evening. Propriano is located on the Gulf of Valinco, here the rivers Taravo, Baracci and Rizzanese flow. Right next to the lighthouse is the beautiful beach Plage du Lido.
On a scenic coastal road you drive from Propriano to PUNTO DE CAMPOMARO. Here is still an unspoiled stretch of coast with calm turquoise water and bizarre granite rocks. Above the small village of Campomoro you can see a 16th century watchtower.
AJACCIO is the administrative center and capital of Corse du Sud. The city with its southern flair has a beautiful old town with the citadel and many restaurants and stores. Ajaccio is probably best known as the birthplace of Napoléon, whose statue can be seen at Place Maréchal Foch. In the evening it becomes lively in the alleys of the Genoese old town with many bars and restaurants.
Unfortunately, the citadel can only be visited as part of an organized guided tour. Worth seeing is the church "Notre-Dame-de-la-Miséricorde" with a large dome, where Napoleon I was baptized. There is of course also a Casa Bonaparte. In the new town, you can still find some magnificent houses on the Avenue de Paris or the Cours Grandval, where there are often stores and boutiques.
Northwest of Ajaccio one comes to the POINTE DE LA PATARA. You can easily walk to the Genoese tower from 1608 from the parking lot. From there you have a beautiful view of the Iles Sanguinaires with the lighthouse. From the parking lot you can also make a coastal hike to the north. There are beautiful views of the sea everywhere and you can walk down to the beach at Capo de la Fena to cool off. However, the surf is quite strong.
The view was magnificent on the CHEMIN DES CRÈTES, but it was also very difficult to even find an "entry" to this trail. And besides, the Macchi was partly so dense that you had to be careful not to hurt yourself on the thorny bushes.
Especially in the south of Ajaccio there are beautiful beaches. First of all there is PORTICCIO with its long wide beach. Porticcio is now a large seaside resort with good infrastructure.
Then comes the bay with the long PLAGE D'AGOSTA with a view of the Isolella peninsula. In the next bay there is the fine sandy Plage de Ruppione between rocks with quite high waves.
And then comes my absolute favorite beach with fine light sand and crystal clear water - SOLE E MARE, and I hope that there will not also be larger hotel and apartment buildings there.
A beautiful small lonely sandy bay with calm water can be found at PLAGE DE PORTIGLIOLO. North of Ajaccio are the beaches PlLAGE SCUDO and PLAGE MARINELLO, very popular with the locals because they are not too far from the city.
From Ajaccio you can make an excursion to PORTO POLLO. On the way we went through the mountains, where we "got lost" a few times, because there were no signs, and we could only drive by "feeling". Porto Pollo is located on the Gulf of Valinco and has a fine sandy beach with many picturesque round rocks. In summer, a lot of people come here. At the end of September however many things are already closed or will be closed.
A recommendable tour south of Ajaccio is the ROUTE DES COLS. Over various passes and through the largest eucalyptus forest on the island, you come to the small village of Coti Chiavari, 486 m high, with a pretty little church. From there you also have beautiful views of the mountains to the sea.
On a hiking tour, we headed towards Corte and then to the small village of Cuttoli-Corticchiato, continuing to the idyllically situated hamlet of San Petru at 888 m above sea level. From there we went to the MONTE ARAGNASCU, a somewhat arduous tour in the blazing sun. But we were rewarded with a beautiful view of Ajaccio, the Gulf and the Gravonatal.
In the GRAVONA VALLEY is the village of Bocognano, from where you can also hike well. We came on the poorly signposted "Chemin", whereby we were also surprised by rain.
Interesting was that we were accompanied all the way first by several dogs, then later one remained. When we eventually had enough of the rain and the bad path and walked back, we encountered some wild boars which did not look very "friendly". The dog started barking at them. And indeed, they sought the distance. It looked like the dog was trying to protect us somehow. Down in the village we met the owner of the dog - the older man invited us spontaneously for coffee - and he told us that his dog was often on the way as a "companion" for hikers.
Another hiking tour led us first to the GORGES DE PRUNELLI and to the reservoir Lac de Tolla, which supplies Ajaccio with water. From there we went to the large farming village of Bastelica, the gateway to the high mountains. From here, many hiking trails lead into the mountains and to some waterfalls.
Another excursion we made towards the north over the Col de San Bastiano to the Golf de la Liscia to CARGÈSE. This place with a small harbor is located on the southern slope of a headland. Worth seeing is the Greek church "Eglise greque" from the 19th century with old icons. North of Cargèse are of course again beautiful sandy beaches.
From Ajaccio in the direction of Corte we looked at the CASCADE DU VOILE DE LA MARIÉe, where the water normally plunges 150 m into the depth. It was quite a climb and then, unfortunately, the waterfall didn't even have too much water at the end of September.
Through beautiful pine forests we came towards Corte past the famous PONT DU VECCHIU, built in 1927 by Gustave Eiffel. Until 1999 this was the only connection across the gorge, but now there is a modern bridge.
CORTE has the only university in Corsica with about 4000 students. The old town, rich in tradition, is situated below a rock with an old fortress built in the 11th century. In 1962-83 this fortress was used by the Foreign Legion. From the Belvedère viewpoint near the citadel, there is a beautiful view of the mountains and the surroundings of Corte.
Also worth seeing is Fontaine des Quatre-Canons, a colossal fountain that served as a water supply for the upper town in times of siege. On Cours Paoli you can find restaurants, bakeries and many other stores. On the Cours Patrimonial, there are some arts and crafts stores. The 17th century church Eglise de l'Annonciation is one of the oldest buildings in Corte.
From Corte we drove along a narrow road through a beautiful mountain landscape to the RESTONICA VALLEY, a nature reserve with many Corte pine trees. By car, you can drive to the parking lot at the Bergerie de Grotelle. The ascent to Lake Melo was quite difficult, you had to climb over many large stones, sometimes you didn't know at all how to continue and had to climb back, and so on. After about 2 hours we had made it and were at the Melo mountain lake. After a 30-minute rest in the sun, we then needed for the descent again 2 hours. Because with one of my trekking shoes the sole loosened, and I had to hold them together in a makeshift way with the shoelace...
From Corte we went first through the NIOLA VALLEY with numerous hiking trails. For a long time this area was only accessible by mule trails. Here wild boars ran across our path. You can see them especially in autumn when the chestnuts fall from the trees.
The large village of EVISA is located in the middle of chestnut forests and is a popular destination. Here begins (or ends) the hiking trail through the wild gorge of Spelunca. Through a beautiful mountain landscape and a 14 km long granite gorge we came to the GORGE DE SPELUNCA, an impressive gorge where you can hike very well - either from Evisa or from Ota.
In the small very popular town of PORTO at the mouth of the Porto River, we had a beautiful view of the Genoese Tower, the Gulf and the mountains from our hotel. The angular Genoese Tower on a headland is the landmark of Porto.
From Porto we drove to the CALANCHES DE PIANA, which start 8 km behind Porto. The granite rocks here are eroded by wind and water into the most bizarre shapes. The colors vary depending on the time of day, in the evening for example bright red. From the old mule trail - Sentier Muletier - you have great views of the rock world. There are also other trails - e.g. La Corniche.
Then we drove to PIANA, perched on a 434 m cliff, which can call itself "un des plus beaux villages de France". The only sandy beach in the area is the Plage d'Arone in a beautiful crescent shaped bay with only a few people.
From Porto, the best way to get to CALVI is to take the coastal road, which is very winding but takes you through some beautiful scenery on the Gulf of Porto. From our accommodation in Calvi we had a great view of the fortress and the Gulf of Calvi.
Calvi, the pearl of the north, is a well known and popular vacation center. Very nice are the lively alleys in the lower town and the harbor quays. In the alleys of the lower town and the harbor quay you can stroll nicely and also find restaurants and stores. The church "Sainte Marie Majeure" with a polygonal ground plan is striking. The first Christian chapel on this place was built already in the 4th century, subsequent churches were destroyed several times. The present church was built in 1774. Outside the town on the Gulf of Calvi there is a long narrow sandy beach, the water here gets deeper only slowly - ideal for small children.
The citadel "Bastion Spinchone" is the landmark of the city, you can walk around it on a ring of walls and have beautiful views of the city and the sea. The citadel was built on Roman foundations and is the oldest fortified building in Calvi.
Worth seeing is the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in the center of the citadel. Originally built in the 13th century, the church was largely destroyed by the explosion of a powder tower in 1567 and subsequently rebuilt in the Baroque style.
A beautiful beach near Calvi is the Plage d'Argentella, about 1 km long, in the bay of Crovani. You can get to the peninsula on a dirt road. You can make a nice but strenuous hike there. From a parking bay you have a beautiful view of the peninsula.
A nicely situated and rather quiet place is l'ILE-ROUSSEL with a small harbor and the Genoese tower and lighthouse on the peninsula "La Pietra". The village owes its name to this offshore island, which has now been turned into a peninsula by a dam and turns red at sunset.
L'Ile Rousse was laid out in 1765 in a rectangular street pattern around the harbor and is said to have the mildest winter climate in Corsica. In the alleys of the old town of L'Ile-Rousse there are several small shops selling souvenirs, jewelry, clothing, wine, etc. In the Marché Couvert there is a market in the morning. In the surroundings of Ile-Rousse there are many light sandy beaches.
Between Calvi and L'Ile-Rousse in the small village of Algajola there is a very beautiful wide and 1.5 km long beach - PLAGE D'AREGNO. In high summer, the beach is apparently very crowded. When we were there in mid-September, we had the beach to ourselves.
SAINT FLORENT is located in the north of Corsica on the wide bay of the same name - in winter an idyllic fishing village. Since the place is very popular, the population increases tenfold in the summer. A point of attraction for tourists is the large marina. In the center you can find bars, restaurants and many souvenir stores. St. Florent is also called "St. Tropez of the island" because of its special flair. On a panoramic road above Saint Florent one has again and again beautiful views of mountains and sea.
On the way to Bastia you can make a detour to the local mountain of Bastia - the 960 m high SERRA DI PIGNO. On a clear day you have a good panoramic view over both sides of Cap Corse .
BASTIA is the most important port for ferries from the French and Italian mainland and also for freight traffic. Bastia is the biggest commercial and economic center of Corsica with an industrial zone. But Bastia is also a busy center of Corsican everyday life. The Place Saint Nicolas with plane trees and palm trees is 300 meters long and 90 meters wide, making it one of the largest squares in France. The beach Plage Arinella, located south of the city, is very wide and long, but unfortunately not very attractive.
The heart of Bastia's Terra Vecchia district is the horseshoe-shaped Vieux Port with the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in the background. Walking north through the narrow streets, you come to the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, where a market is held on weekends.
Around the dock there are many restaurants in all price ranges. When we are in Bastia, we always have our aperitif at a bistro where we have a nice view of the small harbor and the church.
The citadel was built by Genoese in 1380. There are the magnificently renovated Governor's Palace, the Cathedral of Sainte-Marie-de l'Assomption - a Genoese Baroque building erected in 1604-1619 - and the small chapel Oratoire de la ConfrIère de la Sainte-Croix, where you can see a cross made of black ebony in a side chapel.
The palace was the seat of the Genoese governors between the 15th and 18th centuries, today it houses the Ethnographic Museum.

2023.04.02 08:30 OtherwiseCry3173 First job and renting an apartment
tldr; renting an apartment alone for ₱7,500/mo excluding utilities (average ~43% of my salary/mo with utils). Place is just 8-12 mins walk from/to work. Is this too much for someone starting his/her first job? Should I find a cheaper apartment?
Backstory: I graduated March of 2020 when COVID made its way to PH (no graduation rites for me) with an engineering degree. Life was pretty stagnant for about 2 years, mostly played video games with friends online while waiting for the board exam. Also got into a dark place for some time as with most people during the pandemic.
Fast forward to 2022, I reviewed with some classmates in a face to face setup at a review center in Cebu, took the exam, passed and got my PRC license. A month after passing, I immediately started looking for jobs that I am qualified for specifically in Cebu as I loved the mix of province+city vibes in that City and I was quite familiar with the places as I reviewed there for some time.
After a few days, I got a call from a well-known tech company I applied for, checked the job offer and asked advice from my family; they seemed okay with it and supported me with the decision of moving into cebu. I was overall happy with the offer and my family's reaction.
Right after that, I scoured the internet to look for places to rent near the office of my work. Luckily, the job offer includes a generous relocation allowance for people outside of the city so I had no problems with the deposits or advance payments. I wasn't able to find a good offer from the internet so I took the risk of just going to Cebu, book an airbnb for 1 week, complete the medical requirements in Cebu and concurrently look for apartments in the area myself.
It was hard to find an apartment as it involved scouting the area and lengthy walks under the heat of the sun. I found some places with good deals but they posed some alarming red flags (owner doesn't want to show the contract, ridiculously high electricity rates).
Near the end of my stay, I finally found an apartment that's worth ₱7,500 excluding utilities. It's a studio type apartment with an AC unit, its own CR and, get this, a balcony! I thought it was a good deal since it's just 8-12 mins walk away from my office so I went with it. With the excess funds from my relocation allowance, I bought a mini fridge (61W) from a mall, and a water dispenser from shopee (since the place offers water refill for 30 php!). I keep those running 24/7 except for the water dispenser (I switch it off while I'm in the office). My electricity bill ranges from ₱1,200-₱2,500 depending on how often I use the AC unit and my gaming laptop. On average, I pay around ₱10k per month, this includes the rent, electricity and water bills.
I am only roughly 3 months in since I started my job, and so far I am enjoying it! The people, culture, the place -- everything here is great. Basically, this is my first taste of the adulting life, albeit 2 years delayed due to the pandemic. The only thing I'm worried about is having enough savings for my future since just the rent alone takes almost half of my salary. Should I give this apartment up for a cheaper one to have bigger savings?

2023.04.02 07:20 JB8501 Why am I so lonely? Why can't I have any luck with women?
I am a man, and I've been single for nearly my whole life now. Back in high school nearly everyone had boyfriends or girlfriends but I didn't. I was shy and afraid of being rejected. A few years ago I decided that I should go out more often and hopefully meet a woman. You know the one you want to connect to, and to fall in love with, get married and have a family with. But nothing happened. On one Valentine's Day weekend I went to a restaurant where they were hosting a Valentine's Singles Night. But when I got there, their were still people there with last minute Dinner reservations. So I waited at the bar, had a few beers, and water (still driving). I see some people enter with a DJ booth (for the event), some women where there too, and some couples leaving after dinner. As the DJ was already set up and playing music, there were Still some couples eating their dinner and some where not leaving, and the host of the event can't proceed until they all leave. I'm just at the bar watching and waiting, not enough people showed up and not enough of the dinner couples leaving. So I decided to just leave. Very disappointing that was. I've tried online dating but some websites and apps weren't cheap. You have to pay "This Much" in order to see or view your matches. That sucks, especially when a had a crappy job. After a few years later I got a better job. More money, new benefits, and I bought a house, perfect right? I can also try out those dating sites and afford paying the memberships right. Anyway I've been having urges, and needed some (SEX). So I tried something different. I found this site called "Searching For Singles", and I decided to try it out. After joining in I have been getting so many messages from so many women, and Oh My God were they desperate! So I started chatting with some of them, and trying to get to know them. One of them wanted to meet for hot night. And I'm like Hell Yeah! We planned to meet a hotel so I booked it ahead of time because I didn't want to lose any room that day. It was Friday and I got out of work early, did some chores around my home, showered, shaved, brushed my teeth. Then I chatted with her and reminded here about the time to meet and I asked if she needed the address to the hotel, but no response. I needed to check in the hotel at a certain time or else I don't get a refund. So I first drove to the store, bought some drinks and got to the hotel and checked in. I went into the room, started to prepare myself and tried to give myself some confidence. It was time but she never responded to my messages. I left a few messages and I was getting impatient. Finally after hours of silence she responded and was confused and this is what she said, "Why did you go there without waiting my Reply?" And I responded to that with, "That was hours ago!" Then she said, "But why did you go without confirming with me first?" Then I replied with, "We agreed to meet there at that time. I had to Check in or else I lose the room. And you took forever to answer back!" She said that her dog was sick and it was an emergency. And I was so mad that she didn't warned me sooner about her emergency, and confused like, How could this happen? What are the odds of it happening now? I was very upset. I told her to take the dog to the vet, but never talk to me. Anger, Frustration, and Regret was all I could feel. So I stayed in the hotel started drinking some beers and whiskey I brought earlier for our so called, "HOT NIGHT". Next morning I checked out, got breakfast and returned home. Then I went back to the date site and met a Hot lady and she was interested in me. We talked for a while, we were getting along well too. I told her that I would love to meet her but I had to do some housework. While we were talking I've been working around my house and she's been giving me the best compliments about me. And I gave her great compliments too. I was finishing up my housework and started talking to her again, and I told her she was beautiful and honest. She responded with a little flirt, so I flirted back. Then I realized the the sun was still up and I told her I was finished from working on my house and wanted to meet me if she wanted. She called me the Man she always wanted. I was happy to hear that. And I told her, "Would you like to meet me then? After I take a shower of course." Then suddenly she gave me a Very, Very, Very sexy seductive response, And I was like, "I can leave Right Now and meet you. Just tell me were?" She stated teasing me and seducing me, making me go wild. I responded with some sexy seductions as well. I asked her if she was serious about meeting me. Then all of a sudden, she told me she was still working. So I asked her when is is days off. She said that she doesn't have days off. and she's a VA on her spare time. And honestly that was the biggest disappointment ever. All that tease was for nothing. After a few hours I tried to message her, and she responded. I told her that I'm all alone. She says we will always be together. I wanted to know when is the right time to see her? But she never answered back. Next girl, a little younger but very pretty. We talked for days. Things are getting very good. Then one night I was bored and Alone. And I didn't want that feeling anymore. So I tried messaging her I'm alone now and I wanted to meet her. No response. I saw her profile she was still online. I messaged her my feelings of my loneliness and I needed to see here. No response. Then on a bold move I messaged her, "Are even there? Or even Care?" Hour later She logged off. No response. Why dose this keep happening to me!? Why can't I find jus One good woman to love, to hold, and to be with? Why!?

2023.04.02 06:17 kev595 Roadtrip from hell with Rivian R1T
Long time looker and first time posting.
I’ve been following this sub and Rivian R1T for a while, had my deposit in Nov 2021 and received the truck in Dec 2022. Since then, it’s mainly been my daily drive, replaced 2010 Odyssey. It drives night and day compared to the minivan. In meanwhile, made one trip from Westchester, NY to South Jersey, had to make one stop at an EVgo on the way back and it worked fine.
Fast forward to this week, kids are off from school next week and decided to go to Orlando and would be fun roadtrip. Since new to EV, decided to test out few more different DC Fast charging, both EA, EVgo and ChargePoint. EA and ChargePoint worked fine but EVgo was hit or missed. With some confidence, left the house on early Thursday and was planning to spend the night in NC, with little kids, it’s almost impossible to made it down in a day. Plus our check in to the resort was Friday.
The first day, things went great. We stopped at 2 EA stations, both at Walmart and it started to charge right away. Pull in to a station, open the charge port, plug-in and follow the instructions on the screen or start from the app then plug in. Also, driving was with Driver+, felt more relax and less tired. We arrived at the overnight hotel on time, the hotel had slow L2 charger - 6kw but it was going to be 100% by the the time we are leaving the next day.
On Second day, even with the slower charger, the truck was 100% ready to go. We grabbed some breakfast and hit the road. We made our way to our first stop at another EV station and things went smoothly, like the day before and hit the road again. Now it was around lunch time and time for another charge. I dropped off the wife and kids at the mall and headed crossed the street to another EV station at Walmart. Pull in and plug in, used the RFID reader to get it going and nothing. The station is stuck on initialing charging and the truck is saying starting charging but nothing happened. So I moved to another station and same. I called the EA service center and was on the phone with them for 30 mins, in meanwhile, wife is keep calling to see when I’m coming over. Even after the reset of the station, nothing worked. Other EVs comes and goes and no problem, even at the station that I was not able to charge. I began to google anything I can find on this issue and hard reset or letting the truck go to sleep for 30 mins may fix the issue. And tried both, nothing. This is definitely the issue with the truck, not the charging station. Now, I’m going crazy, worries started to set in. We are no where close to Orlando, probably another 4.5hrs driving to go and the truck is down to 20% or so. I now go back to pick up the family at mall and saw a L2 charger and plugged it in and it began to charge but at 9kw/hr. We decided to hang around a little longer here add while we look for options. We searched PlugShares and found another DC Fast Charge, about 30 miles away, ChargePoint 125kw stations. We made our way there and nothing, same as EA. Now, we are calling the Rivian Service for an assistance. The service rep I spoke with was very nice and suggested we find a hotel nearby with EV to stay overnight. He was going to set up an appointment with the Orlando Service Center and arrange a rental for us while we stayed there. We didn’t know how these 2 star hotels are so much more expensive when booking on the day of you are staying. Now, we are losing a day at the resort we were planning to stay at and needed to stay in GA. We were all so stressed and exhausted by now and accepted the fact that we have another tough day ahead of us. Luckily was able to find a hotel with L2 charger and book a room. Checked in for the night and plugged in the truck for the night. I don’t even know if Rivian will pick up the tab on this.
Day 3, 3am, I can’t even sleep and now thinking how I’m going to even go back home even if it’s fixed. By 9am, the truck is 97% and hit the road to Jacksonville FL. Overnight, Rivian sent location of L2 charging locations and a rental reservation information. We make our way to Jacksonville and stopped to have lunch, add a little so that we can made it over to Orlando. But now we can’t make it on time to pickup the rental, all Enterprise closes at 2pm on Saturday, except the airport. In meantime, we spoke with few different Rivian Service reps and they were all nice but no one is telling me definite details or going out of the way to help. Now, we are all so tired and stressed, this is not something we wanted to go through during our vacation. We talked to Rivian again, changed the rental car reservation to airport pick up, pick up rental and finally able to dropped off the truck at the service center with 8% to go. Of course the service center is closed and all of their L2 charger are being used so I just parked the truck, leave the key in the drop box and finally checked into the resort.
Now what? The truck will probably die, I would be very surprise if it still has some power left on Monday morning when the service center opens. And will it be fix on time for us to drive it back? It’s an understatement to just say my wife is mad. My wife is insisting that we don’t drive the truck back and I don’t blame her, I feel the same way. We are leaving early Friday to go back to and we all need to be back at work, school next week. All the service reps that we spoke with are nice and like I said no one is going out of the way to take care of the issue. Having a loner at the service center would have been definitely nice, instead of making another stop at the airport. This is the last thing I want to deal with during the vacation. It will be definitely a vacation to remember years from now and laugh about it but for now I’m extremely disappointed and upset. I still have another reservation on R1S for wife but will probably cancel it when it’s called up. I realize now have $85k vehicle that is “home range” only, reliable on home charge but cannot rely on DC Fast charge because it will either be the truck or the charging station with issues. Seriously doubting about keeping the truck.

2023.04.02 05:22 GnastyGnorx I’m already stressed about Christmas
Our baby is due in 2 months. We are so excited to welcome her into this world, but Christmas is something that has always stressed me out, even before I was pregnant.
I’ve been with my husband 10 years. We usually alternate, but our families live in different states. We luckily moved to my home state last year and we are a 2 hour plane ride/12 hour drive from my in-laws (who have provided zero emotional support my entire pregnancy). I’m so happy to be living near my mum right now because she’s so caring and is just a great shoulder for both my husband and I to lean on. She’s fantastic with boundaries and doesn’t overstep, she’s just a very respectful person and I feel very lucky.
I have posted about my in-laws in the past so just see my previous posts if you want to get the gist of what they’re like. MIL doesn’t deal well with change and this year would’ve been the year we would be travelling interstate to spend Christmas with them. However we will have a 6 month old baby by the time Christmas is here and I’m not going to budge. We purchased our home a year ago and didn’t get Christmas 2022 in our home due to being overseas so I’d like our first Christmas with our baby to be the first Christmas in our new home as well.
Family from interstate are going to want to come here for Christmas, and they’re going to want to be here for baby’s first Christmas - both things I am more than happy with. Would I be unreasonable to ask interstate family to stay in a nearby hotel? It’s 2 minutes away from us. Again referring to previous posts about in-laws, they are hard work. MIL is overbearing and loud and boundary stomper, and she will be worse when the baby is here. I hate hosting them and I don’t want to host them with a baby in tow. I want my baby’s first Christmas to be as stress free for myself and my husband as possible!
Would I be the AH for this?

2023.04.02 04:27 esornosidam Our only toilet in our rented house is not working. Not sure what to do.
I’m hoping the wonderful people of Reddit will be able to help me as I’ve discovered researching these things on my own only leads to more confusion. A little context here, I am renting a 2bed 1bath house with a roommate. Like I just mentioned, we only have one bathroom. One toilet and one shower that we share. On Thursday night, we noticed a leak and mildew (possibly mold???) growing at the back of our toilet near the floor. We shut off our water to the toilet as soon as we noticed this. I immediately put in an emergency maintenance request. Knowing they probably wouldn’t send anyone that night, we expected someone to at least contact use yesterday. However, no one contacted either me or my roommate to schedule service for our toilet. Today, I had to find and call the after hours emergency maintenance line. After speaking with 5 different people on 6 different phone calls in a span of over 6 hours, they’re telling us they can’t have anyone come out until Tuesday. I said that was unacceptable because it was the only toilet in our house and we cannot go without a toilet for 5 days. They just kept repeating that no one can come out. I asked if they’d be paying for our hotel room or prorating our rent for the days that we won’t be able to stay in the house, and they told me to file a claim through my renters insurance. However, it should not be my insurance’s responsibility when the landlord is not willing to pay a little bit more for an after hours plumbing company. Not to mention that our renters insurance deductible is $500, so that would just be coming out of our pockets anyways. I’m just wondering if I have ground to stand on if I demand prorated rent for the month of April. Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
Edit: I meant to put this in the original post, but it’s not just a leak. The toilet line is clogged, and we’ve tried plunging it and snaking the drain and neither of those have worked. So it is an unusable toilet in the fact that it is not flushing at all.

2023.04.02 00:54 Left-Equal-8478 Am I babyhog, too overprotective, or what?
So my husband and I have been married for nearly 3 yrs, and had and OURS baby back in November. I have been in my stepsons life since he was 3 years old and he is now 11.
When dating my husband, engaged, and married my family has never treated my stepson as part of the family. I mean when they see him, they are nice, and if it is Christmas they get him a small gift. They do ot go out of their way for him. So I have adjusted to my extended family (parents, grandparents, siblings, etc) on interacting with my close family (husband, stepson, and now baby girl) on like holidays or birthdays because that is how they treated the situation until I had my baby girl in November. My mother now drives an hour every Sunday to attend church in our town (she claims it is because my younger brother started college over here this year and they can go to their segregation together (note husband and I attend a totally different church, like they are church of christ and we are methodist). Well after church she wants go out and eat with us, or come sit and hangout at my house (but fusses about my dogs [we never had dogs in house growing up], or how my bedroom,/master bath are a mess [we are redoing our master bathroom ourselves and really only can do it on weekends so everything is misplaced and cluttered....], or how we parent my stepson....) and just frustrates my husband and I, he typically goes into his home office and does stuff on computer or goes to the neighbor. Then my mom asks is he mad and just uggggg....
A key thing to note before I get to the real problem. My mother did not raise me or my brothers up until we were 3/4 we always stayed with great grandparents/grandparents/aunts/etc. To the point when my baby was born and my mom visited at the hospital, she would not hold the baby saying she didn't know how to hold babies. I said you held me and my brothers. She responds with no the minute ya'll were born I sent you to the nursery and when we left your dad carried you and we dropped you off at Meme's on the way home.
Now on to my issue my mother has said that when my daughter gets a little older she will take her on trips and travel the world like New York, Italy, etc. I have just brushed this off thinking she is just talking like she does. Now my mother has asked for mothers day can we have a girls weekend (just her, me, and my daughter). I said yes. My first issue with this was a few weeks ago, my close family and I went to the zoo, afterwards my mom asked how it went. I said it went well, it was a little cold and about 1 the baby started fussing wanting out and I took her out and carried her for about 30 minutes and she started fussing again so we decided to come hom because she was tired. My mom then responda with why didn't you just put her in the carseat that clips into the stroller like you had at first and let her sleep. I told my mom that baby will not sleep in the stroller for the baby to go to sleep she has to be laid down in a quite room with the lights off and not a lot of commotion. My mom thens throws a hissy fit saying that the baby is going to ruin her trip because sue planned to get up at 7 on Saturday and listed all these activities for the day. Which had us going nonstop till about 6 pm when we would eat dinner and then more stuff planned after till about 9:30 pm. Then Sunday we would get up early again and go all day till we decided to drive home (about a 2 hr drive).... I told her this was not going to work we might be able to do a few things but we would need to go to hotel like 12:30ish or 1 for baby to nap and we would need to hang out there till about 2:30, and also some of my mothers choices of what she wanted to do arent really feasible for a breastfeeding mom. So I told her all this and she just told me well you better figure out how to get the baby to nap on the road and you will just have to pump before hand and have bottles ready for those moments. I explained that while that would work if I dont feed her I need to pump every 4 hours and she ask what does that entail. I have the medela pump that you plug into the wall and she is like can't you just do that while walking.... my next issue is she has started planning it, and has called several times to figure out accomodations for the three of us. She has repetitively said "I want this to be a good trip for the baby so I cant train her to travel with me, and I can just put her in car and go...." she will also tell me things like I will take the baby on trips but not stepson he is not normal and is wild (he has AHDH, and is color blind but thats it)......
Now I just don't feel like there will ever be a time that I will be like sure mom just take my daughter X hours while I hang out at home. I mean I have never left my daughter with anyone but her dad and that has only been like for me to go to a doctor's appointment, and that is it. When we go to church I sit in the mother's room and sit through the service there instead of sending her to the nursery. I have never left my stepson with family members (other than when his mom has him on her two weekends a month). I just I don't know I am not comfortable with the idea and there is no need for it. My husband works from home most days, when I did work I arranged my schedule so when my stepson was not at school I was not at work. Maybe if my close family and I did not go on several trips a year I coud get it but we take three big trips a year. When I say big trips I mean like 7 day trips. Like in 2021 we went to disney world for 8 days during fall break. Went camping in our rv on several weekends (like 10 or so times) from October till February (some my stepson had wrestling tournaments and some we just went). In March of 2022 we went on a 7 day cruise to Mexico. We took several camping trimps over the summer. In October 2022 we went to Gatlinburg for 9 days and went into the aquarium, dollywood, saw a dinner show, etc for fall break. The weekend before halloween we went to Holiday World for the weekend.... We go on plenty of trips and go all out sonI don't see the justification of my mom taking my baby to all these places. If she wants to go on a trip all she has to do is call and say she would like to go to X and we could plan it. I just never see myself saying yeah just take my daughter on this trip without us, and then to say she was going to exclude stepson. It just frustrates me. Please advise!!!!

2023.04.02 00:27 RaynaClay The Last Resort: Angels and Demons
I have written here before about my job at Ultima Resort (
1,
2,
3,
4,
5). It has been an uneventful couple of weeks at the resort, so I haven’t really had much to chronicle, lately. I truthfully prefer it that way. Interesting isn’t generally good thing, around here. When there are no guests for a time, we get a bit of a break. We still need to do the cleaning, gardening and lay out meals, but that is a pleasant rest, compared to when guests are around. Unfortunately, it couldn’t last and recently, the streak was broken.
I was cleaning mildew from the shower grout with a toothbrush. I scrubbed carefully around the faucet and along the edges of the tub, leaving it gleaming white. Despite everything, there was satisfaction in doing a job well and in hard work…
Oh, come on, you don’t believe all that garbage, do you? I jumped, dropping the toothbrush, which clattered against the bottom of the empty tub. I still wasn’t used to the voice suddenly speaking in mind. It seemed to prefer that, speaking at irregular intervals after long periods of silence. Irritated, I bent to pick up the toothbrush and resumed my scrubbing,
“Of course, I do. You don’t find any value in a task well done?”
The disdainful scoff echoed through my head,
Must be a human thing. I do not find any pleasure in tedium or monotony. In fact, I go to great lengths to avoid it. “Is that what this place is, then, entertainment?”
Among other things, I could feel the smile.
Though sometimes there are unfortunate lulls. “Well, I will try to be more interesting for you, demon,” I rolled my eyes.
Must you call me that? Demon is such an ugly label, invented by the ignorant. “What should I call you then? You refuse to give me a name.”
Names have power, my dear. “Maybe I could give you a fake name, then,” I mused. “How about Buttons? Peanut? Sunshine?”
You seek to aggravate me by naming me like a pet. It will not work. “Really? Because you seem irritated, Muffin,” I grabbed the toilet brush and started scrubbing. I couldn’t let him distract me from my work. I still needed a room, after all, and he certainly wasn’t going to help with that.
You will treat me with due respect. “I’m pretty sure that’s what I’m doing,” I flushed the toilet and stood to wash my hands. In the mirror, blood covered my face, dripping down my chin. I ignored it, he has just being a jerk.
You shall address me as Alloces. That seems appropriate. I snorted,
“Ars Goetica? Really? I’m not calling you that. How about we compromise? I’ll call you Al.”
I took his petulant failure to answer as agreement. I headed out to the hall to retrieve towels from my cart.
I don’t see why you resist me. What about this existence is worth holding onto, exactly? The guilt, the pain, the boredom, the menial labor, the servitude? What is it you press on for? “As long as I am alive, it could always get better.”
It could also get worse. Why suffer any more than you have to? I could help you, if you let me. “You need to work on your pitch, honestly. It is pretty obvious you just want my body, so that you can leave this place and do whatever your kind do, out in the world.”
Of course I want that, I never denied it. But that doesn’t mean there can’t be any benefit to you. I am open to negotiation. There really are things I could help you with. We could even leave here together, if you wanted. There is no reason we couldn’t share your body, equally. “Why are you bothering with this? New people come in all the time. You could get a body, free and clear, no negotiations.”
Perhaps. But do you have any idea how long I have been waiting? How long I might need to wait? There are many thousands of us here, searching for a host. More come all the time. It is a matter of luck who claims a host. If I give up this opportunity, it might be decades before I get another chance. So, you are stuck with me, until we come to terms. Might as well just accept it. “Well, there is nothing you can offer me that is worth giving you even part of my body, permanently. So, I suppose we are at an impasse.”
I think you just lack imagination. There are many things I could offer. We will work something out, eventually. “Look…” the sound of the bell in reception interrupted my thought. “We’ll have to continue this later,” I muttered, heading for the stairs. “I need to greet our guests.”
I arrived at the desk to find a young man with sandy hair, carrying a bag. He studied my face as I approached the desk, and his lip curled up in a look I could only interpret as disgust.
“Is your manager here, honey?” he asked.
Confused, I raised an eyebrow,
“I’m sorry, I’m the only one working the desk right now. How can I help you?”
He frowned,
“I suppose if you are the only one here, it will have to do. Fine. I have a reservation. Quinton Pryce. Do you need me to spell that for you?”
I shook my head.
“Now, I have someone joining me tomorrow. Her name is Melanie Tyler. I have very specific instructions for how I want her greeted, when she arrives,” he stared at me expectantly.
I nodded,
“I’ll be happy to help with whatever I can, sir.”
“Then get out a piece of paper, you are going to need to write this down, you won’t remember.”
I sighed, then searched my drawers for a pen and notepad. Holding them up so that he could see I had followed his instructions, I poised the pen above the pad and waited.
“Very good. See, take my advice, if you get better organized, it will enable you to offer your customers superior service. In the future, I shouldn’t even need to ask. Anticipating my needs like this is basically a requirement in your line of work. Make sure you always have that notepad ready, in case I have more to ask of you.”
I took a deep breath, reminded myself that I couldn’t hit the customers, and nodded.
“Of course, sir. I apologize for the inconvenience. Now, what can I do for you?”
“She will be arriving in the morning. She doesn’t know that she is meeting me, it is a surprise. She thinks she is meeting a client named ‘Joel Smith’, who wants to plan an event here. You will not contradict that, do you understand? If you want a tip at the end of this, Mel must not be suspicious at all.”
I nodded slowly; I was beginning to get a bad feeling about this.
“Just tell her Mr. Smith is waiting for her and send her to my suite. I will handle the rest.”
He must have noticed the uncomfortable look on my face, because he hurriedly explained,
“It is a surprise for our anniversary. I am planning to propose, and I want this weekend to be perfect,” he pulled a box from his pocket and proudly displayed the large diamond ring inside. As I glanced at it, he snapped the box shut, “Don’t tell her about that, obviously.”
“Of course not, sir.”
“Write it down,” he rolled his eyes.
I made a show of jotting it down on my pad.
Perhaps you were right, Al purred in my mind.
I am missing a golden opportunity with this one. I wanted to tell him to take his shot, then, but talking to myself in front of other people would only make me look nuts. He seemed to know anyway, though.
Don’t worry. I would never really abandon you. We are partners now. I grimaced involuntarily at that news.
“You have a problem, sweetie?”
“No, sir. Apologies. Do you have anything you need taken to your room?” my finger hovered over the call button.
“I have a few things in my car, but I don’t want anyone touching them. I will go back for them later.”
“Very well, sir,” I lifted a key from the rack. “Follow me and I will take you to your room. May I carry your bag?”
I reached for the bag, but he yanked it away, covering it protectively with one arm,
“No! I’m fine. Besides, it’s heavy, you couldn’t manage it anyway.”
I nodded and I led him up the stairs to room 308.
“I don’t want to be disturbed. No one is to come into my room,” he instructed, standing at the threshold.
I dutifully pretended to write a note about it.
“Good girl, now you are getting it,” he smiled indulgently, for a moment I was worried he would pat me on the head. “You see how much this improves your ability to do the job? You will thank me, later.”
“Of course, sir,” I smiled through clenched teeth. “Dinner is available until 8pm, or you can call for room service until 11.”
Pryce slammed the door in my face. I sighed and turned back to the stairs, to find Manny just reaching the third floor.
“New guest?”
I nodded.
“I thought Vincent was going to help you with check-ins?” “He said he would, but he never came. Maybe he didn’t hear the bell,” I shrugged.
“You can hear that bell in every corner of this building and on the lawns. He’s in the woods again, isn’t he?”
“Probably,” I admitted. “I warned him against it, but he won’t listen. He thinks if he can find that diamond, all his problems will be solved, and he will get to leave.”
“That isn’t how this works. It is dangerous out there.”
“I told him that.”
“So, this is just another form of gambling for him, then,” Manny sighed. “It won’t end well.”
“You never know, he could figure things out, before anything happens.”
“He
could, but we both know he won’t,” he ran a hand through his greying hair. “Just, be careful around him. See he doesn’t drag you down, too.”
I opened my mouth to argue, but Manny was already walking away. I pinched the bridge of my nose.
He’s right, you know, Al piped up.
Smart guy, Manny. It’s how he has lasted this long. You should listen to him. “Ugh, when I want your opinion, I’ll ask for it,” I muttered under my breath.
Alright, if you don’t want my opinion on the new guest, I’ll keep it to myself. I paused,
“What about the new guest?”
Oh, so you are asking, now? “Yes, I’m asking.”
Well, he certainly won’t be here for long, Al chuckled.
He has already decided what he will trade his life for, and once the trade is made, he will belong to us. If my brethren are clever, they might even get a two for one deal out of this one. “What does that mean?”
His only response was a low chuckle that set my teeth on edge.
“So, you know why he came here? Why all of us came here?”
Of course. Your kind all stink
of your desires, your fears, your regrets. I have often wondered how you don’t notice. “Must be a human thing. So, why is he here?”
If I told you that, it would ruin all the fun, he smirked.
You’ll see soon enough. “That reminds me,” I continued, walking back to the fourth floor where I had left my cart. “You said something about the bride a while back that I meant to ask about.”
I did? “You said ‘they don’t want her’. As if it was obvious, she wasn’t going to be possessed. How did you know? She had certainly done worse than many of the people here.”
What do you think this place is? Al chuckled.
Do you think we lure and punish the guilty? The wicked? “Well, it does seem that the people here are often guilty of something.”
Sure, but it is the guilt we want, not the sin. We want a suitable host, nothing more. We cannot take a life unless it is freely given, and people with strong guilt and regret are more likely to be willing to give up their lives, with the right motivation. If we orchestrate things correctly, they want us to take them, by the end. As you will. The bride would never have willingly given herself to us. Why would she? She had no shame, no regret, nothing she was fleeing from. She was, in fact, admirably self-interested. In short, she was a poor candidate. “But the new guy is a good candidate?”
Oh, absolutely. He reeks of self-loathing and desperation. It won’t take much of a push for him. I rolled that information around in my mind. Was this useful for me? Well, I did know he couldn’t take my mind without my permission. That was good, it meant I just had to refuse him, and there was nothing he could do. That should be easy, right? I bit my lip. Maybe. I finished storing away my cart and headed down to the dining room. It was time to prepare for dinner service.
I entered the dining room to see Vincent standing over by the wine rack, when he heard me enter, he jumped and spun around.
“Lucy, when did you get here?”
“Just now. What are you doing?”
“Just dusting the wine bottles,” Vincent rubbed the back of his neck.
“Where were you earlier? I thought you were going to come and help me with the new guests?”
“There was another guest? I must have been out in the gardens when they came, sorry.”
“Ok. Well, you want to help me prep for dinner?”
“Sure.”
We probably shouldn’t have bothered, no one showed up for the dinner service. It was 10:30 when the call for room service finally came in. A rare steak, absolutely no vegetables. Quinton Pryce was very emphatic that there should be no plant matter on his plate. I hung up the phone and turned to the chef to request the meal.
“Hey, Vincent?”
“Yeah?” he looked up from the wine rack, where he was organizing bottles. He had been drifting over there all night.
“You want to take this up?” I offered.
“I’m sort of busy here,” he shrugged. “I’m trying to finish organizing these chronologically.”
He lifted a bottle, dusted it off and studied the label in a way that seemed a little performative.
“Alright, I guess I’ll go, then,” I sighed and grabbed the cloche.
As I headed up the stairs, Al piped up,
He is hiding something, you know. “Gee, I hadn’t figured that out. Thank you for your insight,” I rolled my eyes. “If you are going to talk, you could at least be useful.”
Oh? He perked up at that.
How can I be useful to you? “I could use some advice on getting rid of an irritating roommate,” I muttered.
He laughed,
I could help with that. “You know I am talking about you, right?” I raised an eyebrow.
Of course I do, his tone was saccharine sweet, putting my teeth on edge.
And I will tell you how to get rid of me, if you want. “Alright, I’ll bite,” I had a feeling I was going to regret asking, but maybe it was some sort of reverse psychology, and he would actually say something I could use.
Help me break the new guest. I will take him, and leave you to your own devices, I felt his grin behind my eyes.
“What?”
It’s very simple. All I want is a host. It doesn’t have to be you. Help me obtain another and you are free to go, without me. “I’m not going to help you shatter and person’s mind and possess their body.”
You wouldn’t be so quick to say that, if you knew what I knew about why he is here, about his desires, Al laughed.
“Maybe I wouldn’t be as quick, but the answer would still be no.”
Suit yourself. I wasn’t really planning to leave you, anyway, Al chuckled, unbothered.
I told you, you are stuck with me. “Unless I manage to escape.”
True, true, he replied good naturedly.
I can’t leave this place, as I am now. But you won’t, either. Not without my help. And I will not be giving that, unless you agree to take me with you. “Not happening.”
That is what they all say. Give it time. Everyone has a price, and I will find yours, eventually. Why not save us both some time and trouble and at least make a request. “That would imply I
want to save you trouble,” I fell silent as I reached the door for room 308.
I knocked briskly, eager to get this over with and get to bed. As the door opened a crack, the smell of oil paint wafted from the room and Pryce poked his head into the hallway. His eyes landed on me and narrowed.
“You again? Does this hotel not employ anything but females?”
“I’m sorry, sir?” how else do you respond to that?
“Look, I don’t want you to get upset, but I really think I would prefer a man serve me, from now on. I don’t need anyone female coming to my room late at night. It isn’t appropriate.”
I blinked, staring at him silently for a long moment.
“Maybe this is hard for you to understand,” he continued, speaking slowly. “I know you are probably looking for some rich man to marry, to take you away from all of this, but I am not available. My fiancée is the only girl I am interested in.”
“That’s great for you,” I held out the cloche. “I’ll get out of your way, then.”
His nose wrinkled in irritation, but he took the dish and spun to head back into his room. As he did, his door opened a little, exposing a large, partially finished painting of a young woman propped up on an easel in the middle of the room. The pallet and brushes indicated that he was currently working on it. The woman depicted was pale, with long, flowing straw-colored hair and dark brown eyes. Feathered white wings burst from her shoulder blades, but she was fettered, wings and limbs wrapped in chains. Despite this, the expression on her face was… ecstatic; absolute, rapturous joy. As I stared into the shining eyes, that cried tears of blood, the door slammed shut.
I just stood there for a moment. The painting had been good, amazing, even, but it left me feeling disturbed, somehow. A creeping dread clawed at my stomach.
So, are you sure you don’t want play with him, just a little? Al wheedled.
The interruption broke me from my reverie.
“I’m going to bed.”
I turned on my heel and headed off down the hall. It was getting late.
The morning was uneventful. I did my chores, worked on balancing the books, set out breakfast that went uneaten. It was a shame; the cinnamon rolls were pretty good. The only odd thing was that Vincent was being unusually solicitous. He followed me closely around the dining room, asking if there were any jobs he could take on. I assumed it was because he blew me off yesterday.
“So, what do you think the new guy is here for?” he asked, mopping the floor to remove the red brown pawprints in what I chose to believe was mud.
I shrugged,
“Hard to say. He said he is waiting for someone, so I think that when they arrive, things will probably begin.”
“When is that supposed to happen?”
“He said this morning…” I was interrupted by the chime of the bell. “Speak of the devil.”
That elicited a small chuckle from somewhere inside my ears. I wasn’t sure if it was good that I amused a demon or not. I shook it off.
“Are you going to help me check her in, this time?” I asked.
“Look, I am sorry about yesterday. I’m here now,” he put the mop in the dark red water and headed for the lobby. “Let’s go.”
I pushed through the door behind him to see a young woman in a sharp pantsuit at the desk, looking down at a large binder of photos and swatches. She must be the event planner that was expecting to meet ‘Joel Smith’. As we approached, she looked up and I froze mid-step. I knew her. The hair was different, dyed a pale blue and long on the top with a modern undercut, and there were no wings, but the face and eyes were unmistakable. She was the woman from the painting. I stared for a moment, wondering what that meant, before realizing I was being foolish. Pryce had said he was planning to propose, so obviously he had painted it for her, perhaps as a gift. The chains had unsettled me, but who was I to judge? He was an artist, maybe it was symbolic. Vincent cleared his throat from behind the desk, startling me back to reality.
“Welcome to Ultima Resort. Do you have a reservation?” he asked, politely.
I needed to remind him to smile more, it would help to hide the apprehension he was currently displaying.
“Actually, I am here to meet someone on business,” she demonstrated a broad smile for him. “My client, Joel Smith, said I should ask for him at the desk, and you would point me to his room.”
“I don’t think there is anyone here named…” Vincent began.
“Of course, ma’am,” I interrupted quickly. I had forgotten to tell him about the false name. “Mr. Smith is waiting for you up in room 308.”
“Thank you. If I may say, this is a beautiful resort. I am so glad that Mr. Smith decided to plan his event here. Perhaps you would be interested in setting up a partnership?” she drew a gold-embossed card from her purse. “You see, I am an event planner, and I am looking for new venues to book events. I am trying to avoid the usual venues in my town,” she shuddered slightly. “But finding new places and rebuilding those relationships is so difficult.”
“Is there a problem with the local venues?” I knew better than to ask questions, but sometimes I couldn’t help myself.
“Oh, no, they are great. It’s just that I always use the same 4 or 5 venues, and it has gotten too predictable. It is safer to adjust my routine, until I have saved up enough to move.”
“Safer?”
Mel laughed uncomfortably,
“Did I say safer? I just meant that falling into a routine gets boring. Clients want things that are new and fresh, you know? You have to have variety.”
I nodded, letting the matter drop.
“Well, what kind of partnership did you have in mind?”
“I thought perhaps I could leave some of my cards and you could point guests in my direction, and I could, of course, steer my own clients here, for their events.”
“Well, I will have to consult our owners, but I will certainly take some cards,” I replied, knowing that this was never going to happen.
“Thank you,” she beamed. “Now, I should get up to Mr. Smith’s room. It wouldn’t do to be late.”
Mel grabbed her rolling case and her sample book and rushed for the stairs.
“Do you need help with the case?” Vincent asked.
“Oh, that would be lovely, thank you!” she paused while he caught up and lifted her case, then they both headed up the stairs.
I returned to the dining room and resumed mopping.
Vincent returned a short time later, looking uneasy.
“You didn’t tell me about the new guest’s face.”
“What?” I looked up from the now gleaming floor.
“His face. It was all wrapped in bandages, and his voice was all raspy. He said he had been burned in a fire.”
“Are you sure you took her to 308?”
“Of course I did, I know how to count,” he looked offended.
“I only ask because that doesn’t sound like the man I took up to 308 yesterday. He was pretty ordinary looking. Definitely no bandages or burns. What did the planner say?”
“She seemed to be expecting it, greeted him as Mr. Smith right away and went into the room.”
“Huh. Well, perhaps it was a disguise.”
“Why would he be wearing a disguise?”
“Pryce said he made an appointment with her as ‘Joel Smith’ so he could draw her here for a surprise marriage proposal. Maybe he didn’t want her to recognize him until they were alone in the room.”
“A marriage proposal?” Vincent raised an eyebrow. “That’s odd. She gave me the impression that she was single.”
“Oh? You weren’t with her for that long, how did that come up?”
“She asked when I got off work and wanted to join me for a drink after her meeting.”
“What did you say?”
“I let her down easy, she isn’t my type, after all. She was nice about it, said that was about her luck with men, lately. She hasn’t been on a date in months because she is too afraid to make a date on any of the apps.”
“Why?”
“Well, apparently, she had a really bad first date a while back and now, no matter which app she uses, she keeps showing up to dates and finding the same guy. He has been using dozens of fake accounts, following her at work, chasing off anyone else she meets. I felt bad for her, she seemed really spooked by the whole thing.”
I stared at Vincent,
“So, you are telling me that she is single, and she has a stalker who uses false identities to lure her into meetings?”
“That’s what she said…” he trailed off as he realized. “We need to get back up there.”
I hesitated for a moment. We weren’t really supposed to interfere in these matters and it never ended well when I tried… but I couldn’t shake the thought of the painting, the chains.
See? I told you he didn’t deserve your pity, Al noted.
“You knew about this?” I asked under my breath.
Of course. I said that he already decided what he would trade his life for. So, we brought her to him. “You can make her love him?”
Of course not. We don’t change people’s emotions, only enhance what is already there. She loathes him, fears him. We cannot change that. “So, what happens when he learns that?”
Who knows? That is the fun part, his enthusiasm was clear.
What will the two of them do? How will she react? How will he? Whatever happens, it won’t be boring. “Boring?! Does that matter right now?”
Of course, Al sounded puzzled.
What else matters, beyond alleviating the constant, crushing tedium of existence? “Why am I even talking to you about this?” I shook my head and ran for the stairs, trying to catch up with Vincent.
I took too long, because by the time I reached the third-floor hallway, he was already gone. The hallway was empty and silent, though nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I hesitated for a moment, debating what to do next. I thought perhaps Al would chime in, but he seemed content to just let this play out and enjoy the show. Finally, I reached out and knocked on door 308. There was no response, but I could hear a muffled voice from behind the door. He was ignoring me. Vincent was missing. I pulled out my keys and opened the lock. The door swung open to a completely dark room. All the lights were off and blackout curtains were covering every window. Whoever had been speaking a moment ago had stopped, and eerie silence fell over the room. I took a few hesitant steps forward in the beam of light from the hallway, then, the door slammed shut behind me. I spun around, but couldn’t see anything in the now total darkness. Knowing that Pryce must be by the door, I turned and tried to move away, towards the windows. If I could get one uncovered… my thought was interrupted when my foot caught something and I tumbled to the ground, only a few feet from the nearest window.
As I fell, I felt a sudden breeze and the whistle of something moving through the air, then a crunch as it impacted a wall next to me. I scrambled to my feet, ignoring my sore knees, and ran the final few steps, yanking the curtain open. The burst of sunlight revealed a horrifying scene. The first thing I saw was Quinton Pryce, standing near where I had fallen, pulling on a fire poker that was embedded into the wall. The fact I had tripped was the only reason it wasn’t currently embedded in my head. I looked for what had caused me to fall and saw a single raised step in the center of the room. It was just one step and it led nowhere. It didn’t seem to have any reason to be there, but it was lucky it had been. Vincent hadn’t been so lucky. I spotted him lying on the ground by the door, a large bruise forming on his temple. At least he seemed to be breathing. Finally, my eyes alighted on the event planner. Mel was lying on the bed, bound in fine, silver chains. He had redressed her in a flowing white gown, and she seemed to be wearing a wig, long and blonde, like in the painting. She was gagged, but awake, her eyes wide and frightened. Pryce yanked the poker free and turned to me,
“Why are you here? Why did you have to interrupt?” he screamed. “Everything was perfect! I just had to finish it, and they promised we would be together forever.”
I backed away, deeper into the room, as he advanced on me, swinging the poker.
“You sent the white knight too, didn’t you?” he glanced back at Vincent. “I knew I shouldn’t have trusted you. Women always ruin everything. Even her! My beautiful angel. Did you see what she did to her hair? How she spoiled herself? Disgusting,” his lip curled. “I warned her not to, but she didn’t listen. Now I’ve fixed it. And when I am finished, she will be perfect, like she was always supposed to be. Like I knew she
could be, the moment we met.”
He took another step towards me.
“What are your trying to finish?” I needed to distract him until I could figure out a plan.
“It came to me in a dream, last night,” his eye gleamed manically. “I know how to make her mine, how we can be together, forever.”
As he spoke, he pulled a knife from his waistband, it gleamed in the light from the window.
“When we die here, together, wrapped in shared chains, the blood from our veins mingling, we will be bound together in the afterlife. And she will finally be the perfect angel I need. Kind, sweet, compliant, and by my side forever. We’ll both finally be happy.”
“Melanie doesn’t look very happy,” I blurted before I could stop myself.
“Of course, she doesn’t!” he whirled to face her. “She doesn’t understand. But it isn’t her fault. Society has ruined women. They don’t understand that their true purpose comes from belonging to a man. I tried to show her, to explain to her that she would be fulfilled if she just listened to me, obeyed me, like she was meant to. But she has been corrupted, so she rejects the truth, fears it. Once I have cleansed her, once we are joined by blood, she will finally see my truth. We will both be ecstatic, together.”
Mel struggled against the chains on the bed, but they seemed sturdy, she was barely able to move. Tears streamed freely from her eyes, which were impossibly wide and frightened, seeming to plead with me for help. I wasn’t going to be much use to her. I was nearly backed into a corner and Pryce was now advancing on me again, poker in hand.
“I wouldn’t ordinarily hit a woman,” he seemed almost apologetic about that. “But I can’t let you interrupt.”
I took a few more steps back, now I was pressed against the wall. Nowhere left to go. He raised the poker above his head, but before he could bring it down, a small loop of chain slipped around his neck, and his head jerked backwards. His hands reached for his neck, clawing and groping, but the chain only pulled tighter. I saw a line of blood appear, but the chain continued to tighten. His eyes bulged for a moment, then, with a final, sharp tug, the chain sliced through his neck and his body dropped to the ground, a ragged wound where his head had been. Behind him stood Melanie Tyler, face streaked in blood that dripped down her cheeks like tears. Her eyes were black as ebony. She licked the blood from her lips with a small smile, then raised the head, so that she was looking him in the eyes,
“Is this what you wanted? Are we joined now?” she laughed and dropped the head onto his corpse.
She closed her eyes for a moment, wiping the blood from her face with the hem of her dress. When she turned back to me, it was with brown eyes that twinkled with mirth. Mel grabbed her purse from a table and searched around inside a moment. Finally, she offered me a little stack of cards. When I didn’t reach out for them right away, she explained.
“My business cards, remember?” she placed them in my hand. “Don’t forget to give them out. And don’t worry, I will be sending plenty of business back here. I think this is going to be a very beneficial partnership.”
She gathered the clothing she had arrived in and began to remove the bloody dress. As she did, I heard a groan from the doorway. Vincent stirred and struggled to sit up. I hurried over to him.
“Are you alright?” I knelt.
“What happened?” he asked.
“It was probably a fire poker.”
He gently probed his temple with a finger, wincing.
“My head hurts.”
“I bet,” I helped him to his feet, he leaned heavily on my shoulder.
“What happened to Melanie? She was on the bed, just over there.”
I followed his gaze to the bed, which was now empty, except for a pile of chain, some of which looked warped and melted.
“What a sweet boy, worrying about me, even now,” Melanie purred, now wearing the pantsuit again. “I am better than I have ever been. I am free. Now, I have to go, but you two take care of yourselves. Expect to see some clients of mine shortly.”
With that, she brushed past us and slipped out into the hall.
“Was she…”
I nodded. He shook his head sadly.
“We should probably go back to the kitchen and find you some ice,” I looked at the lump on his head, it was growing by the moment.
Vincent nodded and we headed for the door.
We managed to find ice and painkillers in the kitchen, and I hoped it would be enough, because we weren’t getting to a hospital. As Vincent sat on a stool, icing his head, I slipped into the bathroom. There was something I needed to know.
“Hey, Al, are you there?” I wasn’t sure if he would even be listening. I apparently shouldn’t have worried.
I am always here, my dear, his voice came immediately.
What do you need? “I just had a question,” I had been thinking about this since the moment I opened the curtains in room 308. “Did you save me?”
Whatever do you mean? he smirked.
“I mean that step, the one in the middle of the floor, going nowhere. It shouldn’t have been there. Did you trip me?”
Of course I did. If you died, all my efforts would have been wasted. I am not about to go back in the queue and start all over. I wasn’t sure how to feel about that, he had protected me, but it didn’t seem like I should be grateful for that. So, for the time being, I moved on.
“Why did Melanie end up possessed? I thought the target was Pryce?”
He was one target. He may have been willing to do anything to possess her, but she was willing to do anything to stop him, and Tyler made her deal first. Now, he will never hurt another woman, just as she wanted. I could do something similar for you, if you are ready for a deal of your own. I shook my head,
“No chance.”
We’ll see. The kind of trouble you seem to get yourself into, I suspect there will come a time where you don’t have much choice. “I am going to back to check on Vincent.”
I turned and left the bathroom.
I guess that is where I will end for today. Nothing too interesting happened after that. Manny took a look at Vincent and said he will be alright; he just needs rest. Hopefully, he knows what he is talking about. Manny, never says much about what he did before he came here, so I suppose he might. We all decided to turn in early, and this seemed like an ideal time to finally write up this entry. I hope we will get another period of quiet, but I am concerned the Mel will keep her promise and send more guests. Either way, I should probably get some sleep while I can.
Until next time,
Lucy.

2023.04.01 22:17 Writteninsanity SIX ORBITS - Chapter 19 - The View Up Here
Jie had set Victoria and I up in adjoined rooms nice enough that I would have only bought them myself if I'd just finished the job of a lifetime. The main centrepiece of my room was a brilliant blue fish tank decorated with plants and colourful fish that my PA told me were from Africa on Earth.
They certainly knew how to flaunt their wealth on Station 26.
The window on the far wall of the room didn't look out over the main promenade of the Pent, nor did it look out into space; both of those would have been too convenient. Instead, it had a view of the 'Jewel of Station 26,' the rare mineral casino that had stood here through several regime changes and funded each of them.
Mining lithium on Station 26 was a fantastic way to make a fortune, which meant that the Station needed a reckless amount of ways to lose it.
On the ground below us, a series of cars and bikes constantly pulled into the Casino for what I imagined was the 'Evening' rush. Stations didn't sleep, and Station 26 certainly wasn't an exception to that rule, but evening and nightlife were still marketing terms.
Moving into the evening meant that I was expecting a knock soon; that would have been completely Jie's speed. Either that or it would be Tash banging on the door and telling me that we needed to go get drinks which was completely her speed, just in a different way.
It had been quiet in my room for a while. Victoria hadn't been able to sleep on the ship while worrying about the battery, so she'd gone to bed while I'd started pacing the second we arrived.
At least we were past the worst version of landing on Station 26; someone new being in power and considering me a friend of the old order.
Of course, it wasn't clear whether our current situation was better.
I ran my thumb over the edge of the unmarked credit chips in my pocket. I should have tried to offer the kid more, get him to fix the ship and get us off the Station before-
Before what? Before Tas- Natasha finished her elevator ride? She was on the way down before we'd stepped off the ship. Unless we'd come here in Victoria's ship, I would get clocked the second I landed with Gunboat Diplomat.
It may be time to get a new ship after all. I could afford it instead of a vacation with the payout from Victoria, or I'd have to repair the ship so many times that I couldn't afford anything other than replacement engines.
I gave up on brooding out the window and grabbed a chair and a datapad I'd brought from the ship to avoid using anything station-provided. I didn't need anyone having easy access to my search history or what I was scanning around the ship.
For now, I mostly just didn't need people knowing that I was looking up Fotuans, or at least trying to; Pasoné, as far as most of the web was concerned, had no relation to the Fotuan Meritocracy. I barely got a trillion results when I searched the name and most of the results related to a Daggeral celebrity from three centuries ago.
That tracked.
I placed the datapad down in my lap and sighed. Compared to other Empires, the Fotuan Meritocracy kept things under lock and key. Even if she was the only person in the entire Galaxy with that name, there might have been nothing about her on the web at all.
Fuck. Was I really going up against the Meritocracy? Dad would be proud.
"Anything yet?" Victoria asked as she opened the door from her room to mine. Combined, our pair of lavish rooms were almost offensive. She'd wrapped herself in a hotel-provided robe that was clearly cut for around six feet as opposed to nearly seven; the emerald colour was stark against her silver-white skin.
"Nobody's come for us yet, no."
"But they're going to?"
"Mhm."
Victoria sat down beside me and pushed her hair over to the shaved side, smoothing it once before crossing her legs on the seat. "I was thinking," she started leaving space for a sarcastic remark.
I declined.
"We should come up with a strategy for how to handle everything-"
"You were fine on the docks."
"Oh."
"Everyone here is going to expect that attitude from you so-"
"Everyone everywhere expects it," she corrected, "it's accurate."
"Mostly."
"Mostly?"
"You've chilled," I offered her a pointed look to communicate that the Victoria I'd met at the bar wasn't about to walk out to 'have a chat.'
"Pardon that."
"I wasn't complaining."
"It's unbecoming."
"It's better for our relationship," I added. There was a lot I was leaving out there, but it wasn't the best idea to spend time trying to spell out 'I actually enjoy your company when you're not being a prick' or 'it helps to not be babysitting a brat.'
We both knew. Firefights were great for keeping people attached.
"One thing about it. Downstairs that is."
"Yeah?"
"Just call me Kingston, don't call me by my last name."
"I thought that was a human thing."
"It is, but it's not an Ovishir one."
"But-"
"People he- The people who know me here are going to think it's weird if you call me by my last name," I explained, "it implies that we're really close. It's better if we keep everyone thinking that we're just arm's length from one another. Or at least try."
"Try?"
"They know me pretty well. I'll try, but people like Tash will be good at reading me. For example, she probably knows that I really don't want to be here."
"You know them that well?"
"Yeah."
"But you're not going to explain it?" she asked.
Down in front of the Casino, a massive, lumbering mining machine that had been repurposed with gold thundered up to the front walkway before opening to dispense a collection of passengers too far for me to clock.
"No. It's not my favourite topic."
"You have a lot of not favourite topics."
"You don't seem that keen to talk about your situation," I pointed out.
Victoria chuckled, "that's fair."
"I did a lot of work here with a lot of powerful people," I explained, "they're big fans, but I'm not that proud of it."
"Are you proud of a lot of your work?"
"Not much," I sighed, "I do the right thing sometimes but-"
"Sometimes you blow up a Mythellion Research station?"
"Yinde deserved that."
"Are you proud of it?"
"I'm neutral," I lied, "feel bad that I disappointed Musc."
Victoria wrinkled her nose and shifted in her chair. "I thought you were going to use the excuse that they were Yinde's bombs."
"Nah," was all I offered. Victoria had been forced to pull the trigger twice in her life, from what I understood, so I didn't want to explain the calculus of blame to her like my Mom had to for me. Sometimes it was you or them, and that was okay, but if you kept trying to shift the responsibility for the people you killed to the actions of others, you'd be able to explain away anything.
That responsibility, according to her, was the difference between people who shot first and people who shot when they didn't need to.
"I killed him. He would have killed us. I was better at it," I continued after a second longer, staring out the window at the crew still unloading parts from the mining vessel. "Tale old as time."
"Hm," was all that Victoria had to offer in response for the moment. If I let it linger too long, she would get trapped thinking about what she'd done on Mythellion.
"What about you?"
"What?"
"Proud of what you do?"' I asked.
Victoria offered me a quizzical look and then turned her attention back out the window. "I-" she bit her lip, "what I do- did, for the Meritocracy wa- is…"
She trailed off, but I understood the last part, 'well, I'm not doing it, so take a guess.'
"You're young," I cut in to give her an out, "you'll figure it out."
"Yeah," Victoria agreed in a way that meant 'hopefully.'
Someone pounded on the door.
I waved Victoria back to her side of the room, and she shut the door behind her before I opened mine.
Tash was at the door, still in a flight suit but missing the apron and grime that came with her work clothes. She still looked like she was one of the dock managers, just an off-duty one.
"Hey you," she greeted while trying to get a look around me to see if anyone else was in the room.
"Vic's in hers."
"Mind if I come in then?"
"Am I allowed to say no?"
There was a pause long enough that one of us should have cut in to break it.
"I'm not here for Jie," she finally said.
"Come on in."
Tash pushed past me before I was fully out of the way, ignoring the lavish decor to focus on the Nurse, which I'd left lying in the corner. She regarded it for a moment but never moved to grab it. "It's been a while since you invited me in."
"What's up?" I asked, closing the door behind us and dodging her attempts to bring up the past as soon as she was inside. Tash continued to stare at the Nurse instead of revealing whether that bothered her.
"Can't I just be coming in to check on a friend?"
"You can," I nodded, "but you aren't."
Tash clicked her tongue.
"What's up?"
"Just serendipity for me that you're here. Need someone for something, and I don't think I'd want anyone else on this station doing it."
"Nobody on the station?"
"You shouldn't trust people from Songlai," she pointed out, using the old nickname instead of anything formal.
"That includes you."
Tash sighed. "I'm aware."
"But?"
"But you and I have history."
We did. I wasn't sure if that helped her case.
"You think I enjoy asking you for help the second I get here?"
"No."
"Then why do you think I'm asking?"
"Because you know I'm good," I suggested.
"Desperate," she corrected, "I don't have many places to go."
"Burned a lot of bridges?" I asked. I knew the answer was yes, but it wasn't like Tash to admit that she was a serial arsonist.
"Working for Jie doesn't get you many fans these days."
"You work for Jie?"
"Everyone on Station works for Jie. Some of us just admit it," she finally turned away from the Nurse to turn back at me. Her eyes had a pleading sparkle, but I'd seen that weaponized before, "everyone else just pretends that their boss doesn't funnel money to Jie, or isn't part of some bullshit network that isn't technically working for her."
"Can't choose who your boss pays."
Tash glared at me but didn't argue against my point.
"What do you need?"
"You have to promise you'll do it if I tell you, can't have it getting out."
"Fuck that."
"Kingston…"
"No, you don't have that privilege."
"Kingson we're-"
"Natasha, you're a client," I cut her off and corrected her simultaneously, "and I have work right now, so I'm not about to drop everything for this."
Natasha looked away toward the window and sighed, running one hand through her hair. There were so many more scars than last time I'd seen her.
I went to open the door for her.
"You're right," she answered instead of moving, "you're right. Look, is there anything you need with the ship? What put that hole in it?"
"I can pay for repairs."
"What put the hole in it?"
There I was again, pressed up against the wall of giving information away that I didn't necessarily want to. That said, the good thing about Station 26 being an unregulated hell hole was its access to systems that might punch through their shields next time. After all, the radar cloaking that allowed us barely escape around Mythellion was from here. "Valikyria"
"What?"
"Fotuan Valikyria. That's what shot the ship."
Tash glanced over at the door to Victoria's room. "What the fuck does she have you doing that you're scrapping with Fotty tech?"
"I'm not discussing that."
"Valikyrias are serious shit."
"So I learned."
"Are you in over your head?"
That was a good question, but I was confident the answer was almost assuredly yes, "No."
She frowned, then nodded, "You get any hits in?"
"If I did, it didn't matter."
"Need firepower?"
"Can you offer something worth what you're asking?"
Natasha walked over to the window but didn't take the seat that I'd been using with Victoria. Instead, she stared out over the Casino. "We have some de-fib rounds on station right now. I can call people on some debts and get them to you."
"That's one hell of a favour."
"I did try to get you to agree without hearing what it was. Those should be enough, though, yeah?"
"I reserve the right to refuse."
"Dick."
"That's not being a dick," I corrected, "that's just not being as dumb as I used to be."
"I liked the old version."
"You would." I watched her reflection sneer at my comment. "Do you want to tell me or not?"
"Fine," she began, "but we have to do it tonight."

2023.04.01 22:01 FrugalFairyGodmother Ontario Grocery Deals - Week of March 30 to April 5
Another week, another late post. Sorry, Frugal Fairy Toddler had her first dance recital this week so I’m late getting this out. We’re super proud of our girl, she has CP and was able to participate without assistive devices for her 30 minute classes. This is amazing because she was only able to take steps on her own less than a year ago and we were told the worst case outcomes and not to expect her to ever walk on her own.
This week the flyers are a bit meh. There’s a focus on Easter meal items, lots of deals on ham and turkey as well as stuffing and gravy. Good prices on carrots, onions, broccoli and potatoes too. Stock up prices on sugar if you’re into canning jams and fruits in the summer.
New coupons are out for Kellogg’s Websaver. Of note is one for 1$ off Eggos. They’re 3.99$ at Superstore and you get 2500 PC Optimum points (2.50$ value) for each.
Circle K is giving away free bottles of Canada Dry, Monster Energy drink, and Guru Energy drink. Checkout the website for their coupons.
Head over to my Instagram page because I'm celebrating 2000 followers with a giveaway. I'm giving away a 50$ gift card for the NBA store. Contest closes Monday at noon.
You can find deals, links to referrals with sign up incentives, coupons, tips, and recipes on my Instagram (
www.instagram.com/frugalfairygodmother). I try to post new content every day. If you’re interested, Flashfood has upped their sign-up referral bonus to 5$ when you use my code and spend 10$ on the app.

Extra savings on food can be found by using the Flashfood app, which sells near expiry groceries for large discounts. This week, I got a produce box for 5$ which contained 2lbs of Ontario strawberries in great condition, a bag of grapes and a dozen + apples.
Price match tips:
- Most stores won't price match Rexall or Shoppers Drugmart or Canadian Tire.
- Loblaws owned stores limit price matching to 4 items per UPC. Different flavours will have different UPCs. Some stores won’t honor this, but it’s always worth a try.
- Showing a virtual flyer like the Flipp app links included in this post is sufficient for price matching. You don't need to find a physical flyer.
- Download the Flipp app and long press the price matches to "clip" them. You can find these clippings in the Lists section for easy reference at checkout.
- Not all stores will price match every store. Each store will determine their own local competition. They should have this info posted somewhere or ask at the cash and they can tell you.
Frugal Tip of the Week:
Keep an eye out on the Flashfood app next week because of the Friday holiday. You’ll start seeing a lot of items close to expiry being cleared out.

Timestamp Hello MouseMarket!
I am selling my modded Starlight-12 Tenz Small which has D2F-01F aka Japanese Omron switches which are light and much more spammable than the stock Kailh 8.0's in the original SL-12 Tenz mice. I have also modded the mouse to have no side-flex or creaking, has no double clicking, no scroll wheel issues, and it has been updated with the latest 1.3.5 firmware. Unfortunately, the shape was not for me, and the mouse has about 1-2 months of use before being put back in the box. Comes with all accessories including the box, dongle, wire, the 3 different Infinity Skins, original skates, and an unopened pack of Tiger Ice feet included. Looking for $180 shipped, $170 local in OC. SOLD TO
u/Cautious_Weight1387 The modded Lamzu Atlantis mini Charcoal has D2F-01F aka Japanese Omron switches which are lighter and slightly more spammable than the stock transparent Huano Blue Shell Pink Dots in the original Atlantis mini mice. The D2F-01F clicks are by far the best clicks I've ever used in a mouse due to the great click design from Lamzu, however the shape was not for me either. Comes with all accessories including the box, dongle, wire, unused grips, extra pair of larger skates, extra pair of dot skates, and the original skates included. Looking for $110 shipped, $100 local in OC. SOLD TO
u/Cautious_Weight1387 MM712 was bought from another user who weight modded the mouse down to 49 grams. The mouse itself had about 2-3 days of use and was put away after finding out yet again, it was not for me. 2023.04.01 20:43 TechnicalPeach4 Here’s all of the rumored dining options and shows for Epic Universe
These are from permits filed for epic universe courtesy of theme park stop. It seems every area of the park is getting a themed dining option in the same vein of three broomsticks and Leaky Cauldron. This will really help universals reputation surrounding food and entertainment that are not attractions. This is something Disney has always done but it is another way where Universal is going to be competing with Disney parks.
Nintendo World
Toads Cafe-this is already open in 2 of universals other parks. It’s a very immersive restaurant where toad cooks all the meals in the mushroom kingdom. There is an hourly show where bowser invades the mushroom kingdom.
HTTYD
The Great Hall- it is a location seen in the movies. There are pictures of this location on google but it is a round dining room with a huge centerpiece in the middle. I would guess this restaurant is going to be more Viking themed in terms of the food it will serve. It will have a capacity of 244 seats.
Dragon Stage Show - 985 seat capacity rumored to be Untrainable which already exists in Universal Beijing. It’s is a highly praised show with dragon animatronics that fly over the crowd.
Harry Potter
281 seat capacity restaurant - This size is very comparable to The three broomsticks. This land is set in Paris so expect more Parisian food in this restaurant
Stage Show -this stage is rumored to have a circus tent facade that gradually gets bigger once you enter. This is seen in Fantastic Beasts 2. Capacity is 642 seats. It is rumored that there will be wand battles or some type of live wand magic show.
Universal Monsters
The Stakehouse- 362 capacity set in an old gothic town. The restaurant is well themed with weapons like crossbows, stakes hanging on the wall.
Windmill Bar- set in windmill depicted in the original Frankenstein film. It will be similar to the hopping pot serving quick service food and drinks. Rumored to have fire effect occur every hour on top of the windmill.
Stage show that existed in early permits was replaced with a family coaster themed to the wolf man.
Central Hub
Atlantic-ocean theme restaurant that sits on top of the parks lagoon.
Elysian BBQ-sits just outside of universal monsters land.
Yin-Yang-attached to hotel. Likely an upscale Chinese or ramen restaurant.
Cassini-upscale Italian restaurant located near the parks water fountain show.
Zephyr Market- a food court located near the dueling coasters. Rumored to be similar to a food and wine festival where the stands change.

2023.04.01 20:15 Maximum-Inevitable66 I think my sister is leaving us for a guy, because she doesn't want to do the work
I, 35 F, and my sister, 28 F, have lived with each other all our lives. She met her bf, 28M, a few years ago. We all moved in with each other and one more roommate the rent in our area is over 2,000 a month. With all of us, we can cover rent.
I'm raising two kids, not mine from birth, but biologically they are her sisters, my cousins, and so my paycheck goes to them—clothes, food, school, stuff, etc. I make the least amount of all of us, which I don't mind, it's a struggle but a job is a job and it keeps the kids fed. When we moved in they lived in another apartment for half a year, she paid her rent, which was 1/3 and we all got by. When he moved it the rent went to 1/4 which was nice.
The issue is the parking spot. When we moved in with were supposed to be three female adults, the last roommate is not related, but we've become close and she acts like an Aunt to my kids. Her bf came and he seemed nice enough from what we heard. I think that my mistake was heard, not met beforehand. A little more background when I moved out and got the kids I expressed to her that I'll need help with them. She told me that she'd be there. Assuring me that she would help out with everything.
The unexpected kids came because of the adoptive mom's sudden homelessness, she can't get upstairs, but she's safe now and in a place, where the kids are with me. I say me because I've done all the work. cleaning, washing, laundry, projects, bonding time such as parks, pools, and field trips, the up all night with fevers and sickness to those last-minute runs to get supplies for the class project due in the morning. From going out for dinner as a treat to scrimpling by with coupons and borrowed money that I pay back slowly.
We have fun little things we do like on payday we'll go get a cheap meal from a fast food place and eat in the parking lot with Reddit stories playing or going to do big laundry loads, like comforters and big stuffed animals we get ice cream from the water shop next door. I teach them how to cook, I want them to have this skill for when their adults, I assured them that life sucks, you can cry and be mad then we can do something as an outlet. I was a very badly abused child and have come a long way. I show them that being alone for a little be to calm down is okay and it's okay to feel things, cry and show emotions. I wasn't allowed that and was punished. We even play video games or draw, cook, talk walk, something to help ease stress and it is stress for them.
The problem came when we were working nightshift, before my roommate, I'll call her Sara, would watch them, it was summer, and then I'd get home and she'd go to work, and so on and so forth. I took the night shift. It paid more. But later she got switched to nightshift and while young teens were still uncomfortable leaving the girls alone. However, even with a bed here my sister and her bf didn't stay the night or even moved in all they way. No help with the kids. Another coworker and I became close and she ended up giving me rides to and from work, I'd make her food, and soon we became like another Aunt to the kids. they love her.
Still, we felt uneasy leaving the kids along and most family is out of our lives, they are very toxic and the mother, who adopted the kids, are now too old to care for them, and since I was picking up extra shifts to cover bills, I admit the lack of cleaning happened, and the apartment got messy. We cleaned when we could, and the kids helped, but we struggled. Being on my feet for 14 hours a day was hard and my roommate has the same if not more still helped out and on her own accord got he kids clothes, and shoes, the four of us even door-dashed together to afford electricity. Neither of us can get food stamps here, we make too much before taxes, and even with all the proof of our bills, it's not enough to get any.
We ended up getting a door camera because someone had been knocking on our doors and we set it up because three too four days out of the week the kids where left along overnight, yes, it's bad, I wish I could afford a sitter or had a family member I could trust. One of these nights I got a frantic call form the older girl saying they heard someone walking in the livingroom, like loud booths. There was nothing on camera and they were scared. I was working alone and could get to them, so I called my sister, who at the time wasn't working and her bf has a car.
Here's what happened, my roommate at her job was also solo that night, checked the cameras, saw no one, my friend who gave me rides had just gotten done with a double and was asleep answered her phone and sent her bf who raced to out apartment with a hammer in hand, my boss came in earlier, the police showed up and in the end four people came to the aid of these kids, being that roommate picked up a co-worker who was so worn out that she said she told her bf to go and she'd walk there if she had too or catch an uber.
Know who didn't show up?
My sister.
I got a call and updated here that they didn't find any more in the apartment, but we had the locks changed and got a second camera for the living room. it faces the front door. 3 people who knew these kids for less than 6 months came rushing to defend these kids. The coworker at the time lived 15 minutes away and was pretty sure he broke traffic rules to be there in less than 4 minutes.
Then when they moved in my sister and her bf brought a box here and there, slow-moving in and I mean slow. they have the master bedroom because they're a couple other two are single. However, the kids now are in my room. I got lucky with bunk beds and a bed for me and they fit in my room. The day they moved in they cleaned, they still had work and moved all their stuff in one go. At the time we wanted to get a couch because we had none and they insisted they had one. so six months later, a nice couch. I got home at the same time as my roommate and we went upstairs and it was nice, the couch looked great and my coworker and her bf where there, they were babysitting the girls, they did when they could and even though I offered gas money and money they refused and said the dinners I made were plenty and besides they love the girls. Coworker has become an Aunt to them.
My sisters bf offered me a sit on the couch, or so I thought because the other two where sitting down and I took a seat and comments how good the place looked and the couch was very nice and comfortable. they we started to scold me like a child, like an actually five-year-old who needed taking to because he was mad and it was hot and they had to clean while they moved, we're upstairs it was a struggle and I was told they had a lot of people helping them, turns out they didn't. the assumption was that we'd all be there to help. We weren't asked.
He also had the nerve to try to corner my roommate, stalked over to her and was towering over her and I have this weird thing, I don't know if this is normal, someone called it mama bear mode but I stood up and got in between them and yelled at him that he wasn't going to come into this damn apartment and complain and yell about it when they haven't been here. Not when we struggled with the kids, and I'm not blaming the kids but they were unexpected, I love them, but he tried to blame the pilled-up dishes, which got done once or twice a week, the left over food, and stuff that was left on the floor. I shop at a warehouse and I left the paper towels and toilet paper on the floor of the living room and I didn't notice when they kids were done eating the 5 buck chicken they left the box there or I would have tossed it out on my way to work. He right off the bat tried to lay down the rules of the apartment he choose himself and I got in his face. I stood right up to him and told him if he thought he was gonna come in here and make demands and talk to my kids and set rules or even us he had another thing coming.
He backed down after a stare-off and went to his room like a child. My sister could hear and see the whole thing from where she was in the kitchen. Said nothing. It's an open space and yes, the kids saw it. I'm ashamed they did but he wasn't going to push me around. I took off to complain to my gf, we're long distance and now engaged, about it and she even asked why he came in acting like he could control things. As we were talking he approached me and said he was sorry. the heat must have gotten to him. We made nice, but I kept him at arms length. I have issues with men, but that's my problem, not his or any other male. Mine is from trauma, not from man-hating.
Months ongoing.
I do 94% of the work with the kids, the extra stuff, and even a second job, which I lost due, but it kept us afloat, all things with the kids I do, my roommate and co-worker pick up the rest. New job lets me work while the kids are at school, so no worrying about them being home along, and when I do have to work, Sara or coworker, who they kis now call Aunties, watch them.
Tax season came, I claimed the girls, I cleaned them last year as watched them. My sister two months later did her taxes and both her and her bf make more then me, 5 bucks more, and she asked me if she could claim the girls this year. This was talked about last year and since I took care of them all the time the year before I told her if she did all the work, then yes. that's fair. She didn't and when she calmed if she could claim one I told her no. I did everything and spending less then a few hours with them a month doesn't count. And her giving me 40 bucks maybe once a month for gas and for water is nice, but I pay her back and she never takes care of the kids. So I claimed then got a decent amount back.
I got took them shopping for new bedding, clothes, socks, shoes, I took them out to eat at places that I can't afford often, such as Applebees, and this year an even place that has bowling, games, laser tag and so on. I stocked up on essential to ease the next six, months, toothpaste, hair products, both have very different hair, brushes, pantry items, electricity, towels, toothbrushes, nothing expensive I still stuck to what was affordable. I even was able to get them some toys they wanted, stuffed animals, some name-brand snacks, and of course we went and even saw two movies at the drive-ins.
So, my sister let it go and said "It's fine I have a high paying job." and this line is something I'm sick off. She reminds me often that she has a high paying job and I don't. I asked her to stop saying it. It make me feel bad? Yes. Am I jealous? No. I'm happy for her, just wish she'd stop telling me a few times a week. Since she had two jobs this year, via at the start for three months then a new one she had to file two forms. w2s and she was mad at the fee and she came home mad and told me she was only getting back 700 and that's why she needed to claim at least one kid.
I told her if she wanted too, then do have the work, doctors, schoolwork, washing, cleaning, mopping, etc. in the last year they lived her they cleaned the living room maybe 3 to 5 times. Their dog makes a mess, my kids do two, but the kids help me clean up. It's been a long thing with them learning to clean up because they freak out about wondering if they're going to be homeless again. They are not. I'm in fact looking for a job to do online so I can assure them they have decent lives and not hard. I try to hide things from them like now when groceries are expensive I tell them I ate when they were asleep or that my stomach is acting up or even that I had a big bowl of veggies. I skip meals to make sure they have enough. My check goes to bills and the kids, I think that is the right thing to do but my sister says she's gonna help.
I'm always met with "I try." and "I can't." Even on the four days off she claims that she tries to spend time with the kids. Now my two days aline with them, weekends, and I'm always with them. She hasn't asked them and then went we invite her to eating out once a week with our fast food meal and get ice cream. she says no. She tried to say that we don't invite her, we do. she's always with her bf. They work together, live together, they go partying on weekends, and I told her can. that's her choice but don't claim that we don't try. One week while I had two jobs, before I lost it, I was doing so badly on my depression. the dishes got piled up, I was struggling to cook the kids basic meals and even though they are learning to cook, its was hard finding the time.
I pulled out if it, fighting as hard as I could and while cleaning one of them said they might as well tell me because they needed money for snowcones at school. I figured I had enough frozen, meat and canned and box goods so I surprised them and gave them each 10 bucks. the cones are 3 for a small and 5 for a large. they could use the money for candies or chips. They were happy and they said they were worried so I told them to ask me and I'd always see what I could get and even if I couldn't roommate and co-worker sent money for snacks or got them things here and there even dinners when I was depressed. That's when the younger one, a year older, said they had a deadline to get the living room, dining room, and kitchen clean. I mean sparkling.
I was confused and wondered if they had planned a nice surprise for me and just didn't do it because they didn't and they ended up telling me that my sister and her bf told them if they did, they'd give them 30 bucks each. however, they said that each time they came in, from going out to eat or partying or anything they constantly remind them. If they were eating or watching a movie or even just relaxing after school they'd 'remind them'. it sounded more like nagging and they told them to keep it a secret from me.
Yes, I was angry and yes I confronted them. There is no reason for you to tell them to keep a secret for me and I found it it was so they could say, 'look, they listen to me.' Then I took the girls out for the park, I was so mad I needed to just get out and I didn't want to have them be upset.
Next day while they were at school and I was a work I vented to my coworker, not the same one who became like an aunt, about it and she pointed out why was I still doing all the work. I agreed, but I told her taking on these kids? I signed up for it. I'm not going to be that jerk who kicks them out at eighteen. So I got home and cleaned, all overhauled our room, the kitchen, and livingroom, dinning room.
they said nothing.
I told them never to tell the kids to keep secrets from me. They have something to say to me, I'm right there. They whined and complain they can never use the kitchen. When it's spotless, like not even a cup in the sink, they never use it. When my refund, yes, I took the kids out to eat a lot that week, and none of the kitchens was used except for my roommate who washes all her stuff. My sister tried to say it was because of work and working 10 hours on her feet isn't easy. And it isn't. We used to work the same job, and I'm still 10 to 14 hours on my feet. I told her I still come home, rest for 20 to 40 minutes, get up and make the kids food, they help me prep it, cook it and then eat. I still gather the daily laundry up and wash and dry it. homework still needs to be done, asking how their day was and if they had a good day or a bad day and spending time with them while I still have to clean up and make sure their prepared for the next day and the kitchen was open for nearly 20 hours and they didn't use it.
one of the things that makes me so angry is the complaining about the kitchen and then each day they eat out three times a day, all week, but has they never to tell me that they can't eat because I always have the kitchen. they have a fridge in their room, and when they ask me to give her pet their meds, its nothing but take-out everywhere.
I asked her one, maybe twice a month if she came to bring home food for the kids. When I'm so worn out and burnt out I just sleep all weekend and still feel like crap. I guess she counts it as taking care of the kids who say she gave them the food and then left to her room to be with her bf.
Last night, my roommate got the parking spot, her car has been registered there but she shares. 4 times out of the week they snag it, but lately, there's been so many cars parking here, I'm sure that it's because so many families are moving in with each other. One of the kids friends invited them to a three-day mini staycation. Co-worker Aunt took us to get the stuff they needed and to drop them off. As a thank you for taking us that far I offered to make her dinner, something simple, I had homemade cheddar broccoli soup and I had potatoes and hotdogs I could fry up. Sister and bf never get home before midnight. So, I call and ask what time they'd be home since only the parking spot was opening was assigned on. so we parked there and she planned on leaving before midnight. I called and my sister answered and told her I'd be making food for co-worker.
I asked again what time they'd be home and they said, to my surprise, 8pm. they're never home that early. So in front of co-work on the phone I said if they wanted us to see if there was parking open and we could go , the car. She said no and that they found a spot. They were mad about it, but are fine when us, the other two, have to look and look for one and me and roommate always end up walking along to the other side of the complex in the dark. they at least have each other.
She claims that they have to fight off people for parking and sleep in the car because they can't be away from each other and I was frying up the potatoes and hotgogs, my kid that didn't go was in our room and I had gotten her some headphones, she might have autism, we're waiting for the doctor to set up to get her checked and they help her a lot.
As I was cooking, they stood there. Like, both stood there watching me. Just staring. And I tried to make conversation, I know she loved this dish and they just blankly stared at me frowning. No saying a word so Ignored them. and finally, she tells him to go to the room, she'd be there later and he goes and she tell me this.
"It's a fight every night, and you don't understand." except I do, and then this line "He's close to blowing up and if he leaves me I'm gonna leave too even if I have to live on my own."
All of this was whispered and it hit me that she's rather leave me floundering and with all her empty constant promises to help me with anything and she said she'd leave. if they happen we'd be forced to move. Our lease is up in two months, I have no savings and have to find another job asap My Coworker's was listening the best she could but I just looked at my sister. I couldn't say anything because what I heard is she was willing to leave us for a guy and even if the guy left her she was gonna leave anyways and live on her own. All of the last two years of promising the kids to help and to be there, which she never is, and all this stuff about him being a great guy and she says he's gonna explode and she can't stop it.
Then she brought up the tax claiming again and I told her she has to do the work or it's not gonna happen and if she leaves, then leave because the kids come first. I love her so much but the kids are my top priority in every sense of the word. I never want to tell them to get jobs as soon as they turn 16 to help out with bills. I want them to finish school, get teen job, go buy clothes and go to movies, to go have some fun, to save up if they want to go to college or even if they want a car. I don't want to use them for bills, they didn't ask to be here and don't deserve to be used for money and she admitted she wanted to use what money she would have gotten for her wedding.
I told her that money was and is for the kids, food, clothes, bedding, etc. She tried to toss it in my face I took them out to eat a lot that week. They only get to eat out once a week and sometimes not even that. I then said sometimes like "if you have this high-paying job, both of you work buy them something." I meant like socks and so on, and she tossed it in my face that takeout is expensive and they end up spending about 20 bucks to each out a day and I told her that they both have a paycheck, and they said like 10 to 15 bucks for their own food each. I pay anything x3 and if I had left overs I can get away with telling the kids I'm caving the leftovers more than a treat. I can leave without that but I think 4 times a month isn't bad for take out and I don't think she should throw it in my face that they spend, according to her, 60 to 100 bucks on take-out a day and complain about not using the kitchen they don't buy or use groceries and take that they want when I'm not here or passed out on my bed from long shifts.
Sometimes I feel like an idiot. I feel like I'm failing all over the place, but they mention they create has me on edge all the time. And even when I try to connect to them or fight for an hour to spend with her and its hard because their always looking for each other. She's gone out to walk their dog or he will and in seconds or minutes their rushing after each other.
I don't know what to do. If they leave my coworker says she'll move in and cover 1/3 the rent, we can always get more couches at a thrift shop or ask anyone if they're getting rid of one. I've been trying to get a hold of a renter house that has 2 bedrooms 2 baths and trying to see if the price is right, 1200. She been telling me its my fault and telling me when she tries to spend time with the kids they never want to go and the rare times they spent time with her they tell me that all her and her bf do is walk ahead of them, do what they want, or even watch a move their acting like young teenagers on a first date, and ignore them the whole time. the older one said they got her lunch and then she had to run after them in the mall because they walked off without her.
they do stuff like this too. it took a year to scrimp and save for the Renfair and when we went the plan was to stay together. they took off and even with phone calls and stuff they kept leaving the group and claimed that we took off. One time us waiting for 30 minutes for them to come out of a shop only to find out they came out and walked off after us saying we'd wait for them and them agreeing.
I'm rambling.
I'm sorry.
I just don't know what to do. I'm stressed and tired and confused. If anyone can make sense of my ramble please offer any advice. I don't have people I can call, no one older, I mean I know I'm in my mid 30s, but I'm still confused. I feel like a failed adult who's pretending to be an adult. Please any advice, I'm lost

2023.04.01 20:09 ShadowStarX What's the thing you want to be a big change from Civ6 to Civ7?
For me it's making tall empires more worthwhile but nowhere close to Civ5's. Or at the very least reward city growth.
The way I'd want that is to put a higher emphasis on per-citizen yields, but through districts. A non-specialty district that should have a higher role in the game imho is the
Neighborhood, which is arguably pretty weak except for say Pingala cities.
The changes I want for neighborhoods primarily involve being able to have multiple Neighborhood buildings in the same city but also interacting with specialty districts.
- Keep the Food Market and Shopping Mall but make both of them more worthwhile
- Primary School ~ NH building next to a Campus. Provides minimal science and culture per citizen in the city.
- Hospital ~ NH building next to an Encampment. Instantly heals friendly units that are fortified on it. Provides a discount towards Medics and any units similar to it. (like the Supply Convoy in 6)
- Office ~ NH building next to a Commercial Hub. Increases trade route capacity and helps earning Great Engineers + Merchants.
- Hotel ~ Can only be built in Breathtaking Neighborhoods. Provides a percentile bonus to Tourism and even more housing.
- Night Club ~ NH building next to an Entertainment Complex. Helps earning Cultural Great People and provides a discount towards Rock Bands.
Obviously the mechanics of the game may and probably will vastly differ, but having 6 to 8 buildings to choose from for Neighborhoods (with no limitations per city) would be a welcome addition rather than just sticking to Shopping Malls for any city that's not starving. (or just straight up ignoring Neighborhoods except when playing Yongle)

2023.04.01 19:53 jLAuniverse26 [PJO] Who did Bianca have a grudge against?
When Bianca’s ghost was summoned by Nico in BotL she reveals to Percy that the fatal flaw for children of Hades is holding grudges in order to stop Nico from doing something he’ll regret…but how did she figure that out?
Simple answer would be to assume what happened on her way to Hades’, such as him having a talk with her ghost and revealing her parentage, probably reveal some lost memories from before they were dipped in the Lethe, lament that she died, but may get some sway and have Elysium assured for her, etc. But it doesn’t seem like we have the full story for why Bianca says it’s the flaw of Children of Hades and not just Nico, who is currently the one at risk of holding one against Percy at his own expense. Which suggests that she may have had a grudge that led to her demise in the story.
We can probably assume that “holding grudges” as a fatal flaw wouldn’t be limited to being directed at one person for the rest of their lives, but multiple people like Percy’s loyalty (or his wrath as some have suggested). That would likely include anyone Nico and Bianca had came across since leaving the Lotus Hotel, like the manticore at their school before he revealed himself.
I’m thinking Bianca’s motivation for joining the Hunters was also fueled by a grudge, rather than an inexplicable desire to be as far and free from Nico as possible while occasionally visiting. I think Bianca has a grudge against Nico because she resents being the only one who’s had to look out for him since their mother was killed by Zeus. Since she had no memory of this event taking place and couldn’t direct it at Zeus for killing Maria or Hades for sending them away, all she’s know is that she’s stuck in a job she never volunteered for, just like her father.
This is generally a normal feeling to have when you’re basically left as the only one to raise up your siblings, but it seems that this was taken to an extreme degree beyond a desire for a break or personal freedom. Especially when you consider their background as Italian siblings from the 40’s. We see they have a strong bond as siblings (mostly through Nico’s attachment to her and their mutual primary concern being that the other’s being looked after), but it’s hard to justify why or how someone could do something as drastic as joining the Hunters immediately after meeting them.
One explanation could be the insight into what Hades’ might do at the first opportunity to take over another domain and leave management of the Underworld behind to someone else being reflected through Bianca’s actions. However, another could be the resentment Bianca holds towards her existence before the Hunters having no other receptacle besides the person she was in charge of; her brother.
From what I remember, Bianca described their flaw as something that consumes them and affects their decisions (I think, it’s been a while since I’ve read that part), which could explain how she could seemingly do something so callous. Although, the same way that Nico still wanted Bianca to be protected on her Quest despite her decision to leave him, I believe Bianca’s bond with him wouldn’t allow her to keep up her grudge against him and eventually turned the grudge into one against herself rather than just dissipating. Like her initial grudge, I believe that the grudge against herself for what she did was so powerful that it overrode her own self-preservation, resulting in her stealing from the junkyard as well as completely sacrificing herself to the giant automaton.
That’s why I think Bianca knew as much as she did about the depths of their fatal flaw as she did. Because she experienced it firsthand and it led to her own demise. We see firsthand how many Demigods fail or nearly die due to the nature of their flaw affects their sense of reasoning and places them in exponentially greater danger unless surrounded by people that can steer them way from it, i.e. Annabeth’s desire for a challenge and hubris nearly getting her and her party killed because she wasn’t winning the way she wanted, Percy’s desire to protect Annabeth and loyalty in TLO becoming the sole factor that would guarantee Kronos’ ascendancy, Thalia’s desire for power making her the most vulnerable to Luke and Kronos’ offer and forcing her to join the Hunters to avoid having the choice put on her in the Great Prophecy, etc.

2023.04.01 19:01 PSChris33 Visiting Houston in a couple weeks, looking for some advice
Hey everyone,
I'm a displaced Torontonian (living in Seattle) that will be in town for the Jays' 3 game series in Houston from April 17-19, and I will be in town April 15-20, staying near Toyota Center. I have a bucket list to see the Jays play in every single MLB ballpark, and you guys are stop #4 - too bad I don't have a Springer jersey to wear.
What would you guys say are some musts to do as a first timer in Houston, in and around the city? Unfortunately, I will be without a car, but I'm willing to spring for the occasional Uber. Also, some advice on food would be great - I know TX has a pretty big TexMex and BBQ scene, but I also like pizza, Vietnamese, Mexican food. I love me some ridiculous cocktail, barcade, and divey-type bars as well.
Also, looking for some game day advice - what time to the doors at MMP open and what would you guys say are the big go-to spots when it comes to pre-gaming and grabbing pregame drinks? Not to mention good spots where I can grab some snacks or some to-go food and bring it into the park! Also, if you guys know where visiting teams tend to stay that'd be great. I got to meet a couple Blue Jays players when I was in Pittsburgh back last year outside the hotel.

Background
I started running in mid 2017 at 36 years old with a goal to just get some exercise for physical and mental health and targeted a sub 45min 10k which I achieved. I ran a 1:31 half in early 2018 and then sub 40 for 10k, sub 20 for 5k late 2018 (39:43, 19:20). Targeted a sub 3:15 Marathon in Tokyo 2019 but got injured 4 weeks out running a 10k PB of 38:32 and didn’t run at all for the last month, still ended up running 3:16:49. The rest of 2019 was building back up from that injury, getting real fit, and then getting more injuries, then getting real fit again only to have covid hit and cancel all the races. 2020 did some time trials, got my 10k time down to 37:43 and 5k to 18:01., before getting injured again and missing 2 months at the end of the year.
In 2021 I got a coach and changed my approach, coming back only 3-4 months after that injury I ran a few 5k PBs and got my time down to 16:43, then built up slowly for a half and marathon towards the end of the year only to have them all cancelled again, but I ran time trials for 10k and half in 35:22 and 1:18:36. I got fit again before getting fully locked down in March 2022 for 4 weeks in Shanghai (as in couldn’t leave our apartment at all). Escaped Shanghai to Australia for a few months and ran a 10k PB of 34:59 (in poor weather and race execution, I feel I was a lot fitter than this) and 1:18:10 at Gold Coast Half (1 week after spending a week in bed with covid, so also feel I was fitter than this) before moving to Singapore in July. I ran a massive PB 2:45:02 at Chicago Marathon 2022, race recap for that is here
https://www.reddit.com/AdvancedRunning/comments/yf9fg5/2022_chicago_marathon_32min_pb/ Training
I took 12 days off after Chicago to recover and let some niggles settle. then slowly built up to regular mileage around 70km by week 4 back running. Also did my first sessions that week after only easy running the first 3 weeks, so a very conservative rebuild. I did a parkrun 7 weeks post Chicago just to see where the fitness was at, ran 17:09 in very hot and humid weather so probably comparable to my PB in cooler weather. The week after that I raced the 10k at Singapore Marathon, 35:32 and second place (again, obviously hot and humid) and after a 17:19 first 5k so not bad. Missed a week with some sickness around Christmas, then 1 week back after that before jumping into a 9 week marathon block.
Luckily the weather in Singapore is slightly cooler in Jan, but warmed up again through Feb and March so most of my training was done in 26-32 Celsius (79-90 Fahrenheit) and always 85-100% humidity! My average mileage for the 9 weeks was 91km (56 miles) with a peak week of 99.8km (61 miles) and 1 week with some minor sickness I dropped to 80km. I did mostly marathon specific workouts with sessions on Wednesday and a session built into the end of the long run on Sundays with 7 between 34-36km, everything else just recovery and easy running, I run 6 days a week with Monday always a full rest day. Everything went very smoothly and I was able to complete almost all of the sessions my coach set except for 1 that I bailed early as I had some sickness, and a couple that the heat got to me so had to adjust paces.
Some key workouts that went really well included.
24k easy @ 5:08, (4 x 2k @ 3:34, 2min jog), 2k cd (35km total) 3 x (5km @ 3:47, 1km float @ 4:08) 5k @ 3:43 , 2’ jog, 6 x (90s @ 3:18, 90s easy), 2’ jog, 5k @ 3:39 14k tempo @ 3:46 with pace cutdowns (5ks in 19:03 (3:49), 18:55 (3:47), 4k in 14:45 (3:41)) 6k wu, 8k @ 3:49, 6k @ 3:44, 4k @ 3:34, 2 x 1k @ 3:25, 3:16, (1k jog between 8,6,4, 90s between k’s) 4.5k cd (34km total) Mileage for 10 weeks including race.

Pre-race
I flew to Seoul on the Thursday arriving in the evening, I hadn’t slept much the few days prior as was stressed with work, I didn’t get much sleep this night either (a recurring theme for me unfortunately). Friday morning just went for an easy 25min shakeout, before beginning the carb load.. pancakes, rice, pizza all on the agenda along with copious amounts of gatorade, lollies, chips, maurten and whatever else I could get in. It was great to have a group of 5 friends along for this one, compared to being solo at Chicago, it made the couple of days before the race much more enjoyable rather than just sitting in a hotel room alone. Friday night, again not a whole lot of sleep. Saturday another 25mins jog with the crew then went to the fairly small expo to pick up our bibs.
Saturday night I managed to get a few hours sleep at least. Still woke up several hours before my alarm at around 2am, listened to some music, watched some YouTube and waited until my planned wake up time of 5:00am. Had a bagel with jam and a maurten 320 for breakfast, went to the toilet about 8 times, and got ready. We were staying only about 400m to the start line so had an easy walk down just before 7 to drop a bag and get ready for the 8am start. Jogged around 10mins, found another toilet then got in the start corral.
Race
I was feeling really fit and prepared for the race, but still wanted to be a little conservative and just get through the race with no issues rather than go all out and risk a blow up. After Chicago where I thought I could have run around 2:42-3 if I hadn’t cramped most of the last 12km, my plan was to go through half around 80:30 which would land me around that 2:41-2:42 area (a solid result I’d be happy with). If I was feeling good at half and 30k I could pick it up and still have the possibility of going sub 2:40 (an amazing result), and if I had any cramps or other issues again I could hopefully still be under 2:45 and get a PB (I still would have been really happy with this). The weather was perfect, around 3 degrees Celsius (38f) at the start and maybe around 8c (46) by the end, there was quite high pollution though.
I also planned to use the same strategy as I had done in Chicago, which was to have nothing showing on my watch, no pace, no heart rate, no distance.. except elapsed time and split time. I would manually lap my watch every 5k, and if I remembered I’d maybe check the lap time at the next km marker to see if the pace hadn’t picked up or slowed too much.
The race started with the usual mad dash but I was good about not getting sucked into anything. At the first km marker I looked at the time, 3:52, perfect! Over the next 1-2km a massive group had started to form, probably 50-60 people. I decided this was my group so I just sat near the back and cruised along. Went through 5k in 19:06 feeling like an easy Sunday long run and very happy to just chill there until at least half. But within 30s of passing the 5k the group started to split, around 20 people went hard off the front, around 20 formed a second pack, and some started to drop off. I made the decision to go with the 2nd group as I was feeling very comfortable.
Checking the lap time at the 6km marker had me questioning the decision with a 3:45 but I decided to stick with it. We reached 10k in 37:45 with an 18:39 split.. shit.. that’s way faster than I wanted to be going at this point, but I still felt great and there was no one close behind so I decided to stay with the group. The next 5k was 18:37 and we started to reel in some of the group that had gone off harder at 5k, we’d dropped a few from our group so this new group was probably around 25 or so. I still felt fairly comfortable but since I was at the back of the group I’d occasionally lose focus and drift a metre or 2 behind, and then push back up. I decided around 15k to move up more in the middle of the group. This was a great decision as it really felt like I was just getting swept along without needing to think about anything. This next split slowed a bit as well, 19:04, although was slightly net uphill. We went through half in 79:24, a full minute quicker than I was planning but the benefits of being in this group were obvious and I was feeling really good.
There was not a lot of crowd support the entire race, but when there were small groups they were loud and enthusiastic. After half we gradually dropped more and more people from the group and also began passing people that had maybe gone out a little hard, definitely a motivating experience to be in a big pack just sweeping people up and motoring past them. I really just focused on switching off and relaxing from 20-30k, which was easy to do still sitting in the middle of the group, there was also a bit of headwind here, it didn’t really affect me but maybe why we slowed a bit again. There were also a few little up and down hills in this section but nothing that was hard, and I welcomed the occasional change in rhythm. The split at 25k was 18:52, and 30k was 19:06.
We were probably down to around 12 people at 30k, and just after we crossed the mat 2 guys pushed off the front. I let them get around 5 metres in front before deciding to go with them as I was still feeling really good. One other guy came with me so we formed a group of 4. That guy that had come with me dropped off a few km later and the split at 35k was 19:08. I was still feeling good and confident I could start pushing a bit for a strong finish and comfortably under 2:40. Similar to Chicago, as soon as I started thinking that, something happened, in Chicago it was a hamstring cramp (which I never have), here it was a side stitch (which I probably haven’t had since I was 13 years old!). I had no idea how to try and relieve it, so I just tried to ignore it and focus on keeping with the 2 remaining guys from our group. From around 35-37.5 it was a gradual uphilll, nothing steep just a long gradual rise, with maybe a couple hundred metres near the end a bit steeper as you go up a bridge.
The stitch wouldn’t go away but I was able to fight through it. At 38k you start to descend the other side of the bridge, this is where the 2 guys started to push the pace, I tried to go with them but suddenly I got another stitch in the other side and it just became unbearable so I had to let those guys go and back off the pace just slightly to be able to keep running. A note here about nutrition, I took a Maurten Caf 100 around 10mins before the start, then a Maurten gel roughly every 6km, with caffeine at 18km and 30km, so 6 gels in total. There were drinks every 5k and I’d usually have water and/or pocari sweat at each one, occasionally there was extra water that id take. I had no GI or energy issues at all during the race, but wonder if I drank too much water and thats what caused the stiches, since it was so cold I barely sweat at all the entire race.
Aerobically I still felt fine, breathing was easy, and my legs surprisingly still felt quite fresh.. the limiting factor was just the stitches which got progressively more painful. With around 3k to go the 4th member of our pre-35k group that we had dropped caught me. Those last 3k were brutal but we stuck together and motivated each other to keep pushing, he got a little ahead of me the last km but we ended up crossing the line at the same time. With 1km to go I had that overwhelming urge to stop as the pain was really getting intense, It is equal part so much physical pain that your body must release some kind of weird chemical concoction to make you suffer less, I imagine it’s what you feel just before you die.. mixed with equal part elation that I’m going to reach a goal that seemed entirely impossible 4 years ago when I first broke 20mins for 5k, but maybe possible 4 weeks ago as training was going very well, and now definitely possible in under 2 minutes if I just keep putting one foot in front of the other. There was an inflection point with around 600m to go that a wave of euphoria hits and I started to cry, literally sobbing uncontrollably, I closed my eyes and willed myself on.
The race finishes inside the 1988 Olympic stadium which was an incredible experience. So I entered the stadium with around 350m to go, closed my eyes again and gave it everything I had. Crossing the line in 2:40:31 for a 4.5min PB.
Post-race
2 members of my group finished around a minute ahead so it was great to see them and hear how their races had gone, while we waited and celebrated as the other 3 in our group came in, 2:43, 2:52 and a 3:04 debut, all really great results. The race finished on the other side of Seoul so we took the long subway ride back to our accommodation and went for burgers and beers, followed by some incredible Korean BBQ and more beers for dinner that night.
Overall I’m super happy with the result and execution of this one. Obviously it would have been great to not get stitches and potentially run under 2:40, but I’m super confident that is well within my capabilities now so just need to keep on going and the result will come in time.
After a couple weeks off I’ve just started running again and will slowly get back in to training as that worked well for me after Chicago. Next up over the coming 3-4 months i’ll focus on lowering my 5,10 and half PBs, which I feel are all really very soft now, and then another marathon block. Somehow I got into Berlin with my 2:45:02 (which is 2 seconds outside the sub 2:45 qualifying time but they accepted me anyway), unfortunately I’m not sure it’s going to be a possibility this year due to some other life factors so may have to defer, but if not Berlin maybe an Australian marathon around the same time, possibly Sydney or Melbourne.
Hope you enjoyed reading.

2023.04.01 16:21 MarchOnMe Interesting old article from 2006 about pitbull problem in Waco, Texas
http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=26005 A pit bull breeder switches breeds as she doesn't feel that the people buying pit bulls care for them properly. A proposed anti-chaining bylaw (I like it) and some interesting numbers regarding the types of dogs the shelter deals with the most.
Pit bull owners often to blame for breed's bad press
Sunday, April 16, 2006
By J.B. Smith
Tribune-Herald staff writer
Some people buy pit bull terriers as the canine equivalent of a Hummer: an overpowered, macho status symbol, able to crush anything in its path.
Others in the grip of “pit bull fever” fall in love with the dogs’ loyalty, affection and athletic grace.
“They make the best pet you could ever have,” said Linda Harper, a former pit bull breeder from Bellmead. “Once you get one, you’re hooked and hooked bad, because they’re such awesome dogs. You have to tell people to be careful, or they’ll end up with five or six.”
For whatever reason, Waco’s pit bull population is booming and becoming a public safety issue, police say. Pit bulls now account for about 80 percent of Waco animal control calls, as well as 16 of the city’s 28 dog bite cases in the first three months of this year.
The pit bull boom is part of what’s driving the city Animal Advisory Board to recommend an ordinance to prohibit the prolonged chaining or tethering of dogs.
Chained dogs in general tend to be more vicious and likely to attack people, animal control officers say. If that dog is a pit bull that hasn’t been well-socialized, the danger is especially great, they say.
“The majority of the people who have (pit bulls) don’t have them fenced in,” said Waco animal control supervisor Bill Vieregge. “They put them on the end of a logging chain, with little or no human contact.
“The difference between this and any other dog is that when you’re bitten by a pit bull, the bite is more serious. Their jaws have such crushing power, they can snap your arm.”
The rising popularity of pit bulls has ignited a national debate, with passionate partisans on each side. Some say the breed is inherently dangerous, and some cities, including Denver, Colo., have banned the dogs altogether. Texas law doesn’t allow “breed-specific legislation,” but that doesn’t mean pit bulls get the same treatment as other breeds. In Waco, Fuzzy Friends Animal Rescue won’t take pits, and the Waco Humane Society’s animal shelter won’t adopt them out. The shelter received 1,208 pit bulls last year — about 10 percent of the dog total — and released 134 to the owners. The rest were euthanized.
Pit bulls in the news
Attacks by pit bulls and pit bull mixes have been in the news lately, including the fatal mauling in November of a 76-year-old Milam County woman by six dogs, described as a mix of pit bull and Rottweiler. In February, a Bell’s Hill Elementary fourth-grader was taken to the hospital after an attack by dogs described as pit bull mixes. And a North Waco man was recently convicted on Class A misdemeanor assault charges after his pit bull mix bit a 9-year-old neighbor on the arm, leg and ribs in May 1995.
Pit bull advocacy groups say the breed is unfairly maligned, and the problem is one of nurture, not nature. They note that pit bulls were bred over the centuries to fight other dogs, but those that attacked people were immediately killed under dogfighting rules. The result, they say, is a dog breed that generally is aggressive toward other dogs but friendly to people, to the point that a well-socialized pit bull is often ineffective as a guard dog.
Carrie Kuehl, executive director of the Waco Animal Birth Control Clinic, said pit bulls show a wide variation in temperament. Some pit bulls that come into her clinic have to be muzzled, but others are harmless.
“Some are the sweetest dogs you could ever ask for,” she said. “They have the power to inflict serious wounds, but if they are raised in the right environment, they are very good companion pets.”
‘Not status symbols’
She said pit bulls that are aggressive to people reflect the owner more than the breed.
“The part that’s disturbing to me is that many people will go and adopt a pit bull, and they want to own it like they want to own an article of clothing or a car,” Kuehl said. “Dogs are not status symbols. They are part of our families. They’re not to be purchased as a commodity.”
But that’s too often the case, said Waco Assistant Police Chief Clare Crook, who oversees animal control. She attributes the rise of pit bulls partly to hip-hop subculture and rap videos that show mean-looking pit bulls as macho accessories.
“It’s a status thing, like bling,” she said. Owners with such a mindset tend to neglect their pit bulls and leave them on short chains without adequate shade or shelter.
Animal shelter officials have documented cases of severe festering wounds on the necks of chained dogs, often because the owner failed to adjust the collar as the dog grew. One pit bull in quarantine at the shelter this week showed such neck scars, while another had scars all over its face, a possible sign of dog fighting, shelter workers said.
Animal advocates say an ordinance against tethering dogs for more than two hours would be a good start in fighting inhumane treatment.
“It’s just the progressive thing to do,” said Pat Seesing, a Waco Humane Society board member who also serves on the city Animal Advisory Board. “We need to get in line with the progressive cities of Texas. . . . Rome wasn’t built in a day. But you have to have it on the books before you can start making progress.”
Canine escape artists
But some aren’t so sure an ordinance against chaining would safeguard Waco’s streets from vicious dogs. In a recent city council discussion with the Animal Advisory Board about tethering dogs, Councilwoman Alice Rodriguez voiced concerns that dangerous dogs might be more likely to escape from a pen than a chain.
Harper, the former pit bull breeder, agreed, saying pit bulls in particular are great escape artists that can get over, under or through fences. Anything less than a concrete floor or a reinforced pen with a cover may not hold a pit bull, she said.
“They will chew through a chain link fence,” she said. “That’s why I kept my dogs on chains with swivels on both ends. If they pass some kind of ordinance that you can’t keep pit bulls on a chain, it’s almost like the city has opened fire on the public. These animals will not be contained.”
Crook, the assistant police chief, said that, under the city’s proposed dog-tethering ordinance, dog owners who can prove their animals need to be chained can claim that as a defense, as long as they also have a fence at least four feet high. She said loose dogs will continue to be impounded and their owners cited.
‘Heartbreaking’
Harper said she has stopped raising pit bulls in the last few years because customers were not giving them the care and attention the dogs need.
“I raised them for 14 years, but moving to Waco has made me not want to raise pit bulls,” she said, adding that she has switched to raising Olde English bulldogges.
“The vast majority of pit bull owners are the kind of people who don’t take them to obedience training,” Harper said. “I’ve never met anyone who I felt did the right thing with the dogs. It was heartbreaking to sell a dog and find they end up in a place where you wouldn’t want them.”
She said the last straw was when she sold a blue-eyed, white pit bull puppy to a man she thought would take good care of him. Instead, she discovered the dog had become a “reigning champion” in dogfights around Marlin, she says.
“He bought the dog for $800, and I offered him $1,500 to buy him back,” she recalled. “He said, ‘I won that much the other day fighting.’”
Harper said she finally persuaded the owner to sell back the pit bull, but she found that it had become too aggressive. One day the dog escaped and nearly killed one of her other dogs, and she decided to euthanize the pit bull, she said.
The experience cured her of pit bull fever.
“These days I have no interest in the pit bull breed, other than hurt feelings,” she said. “So many of these dogs have a lot of emotion, real personality and spirit. When they’re treated like vicious animals, it’s a sad thing to see.”
