2023.04.02 15:14 NipAnOxe The truth behind marksdwarves equipping difficulties
This comes up a lot and I usually explain this in comments. My explanation has been confirmed by
Tekkud but it really comes from the comments of FurtherReading's
Marksdwarves Video. I wanna open with this as sometimes people trust YouTuber opinions over mysterious reddit/youtube commenters.
The reason why your Dwarves won't equip bolts is nothing to do with the uniform itself. It doesn't matter if you edited an existing uniform, edited the default archer uniform, created a uniform from scratch or give every dwarf in the squad a custom uniform. Regardless of how it is assigned, when a dwarf realises they are a ranged dwarf (which can take a few minutes of equipping their armour) they select a quiver and bolts to equip. Then they start walking around getting those bolts in order.
The bolt bug occurs because they can select inaccessible bolts. They can decide that a bolt they literally can't path to is one of their bolts. They can decide a bolt that is inside the guy their buddies are shooting at is the bolt they want. They need this bolt or they won't continue. If you forbid the bolt they won't change their mind - the only want that bolt.
There are three fixes for when they get into this situation:
- find some way to make the bolt accessible. You won't know which one he wants so do it to all of them.
- Use Dfhack autodump to teleport every bolt on the map to an accessible part. This is just option 1 but brute force.
- Delete the squad and make it again. This info is stored in the squad position so even if you edit that position's uniform it still retains the list of bolts and quiver it wants. Making a whole new squad runs the bolt assignment again which should hopefully only choose accessible bolts this time.
In order to avoid making this happen, try turning claim ammo and claim death items off. This should hopefully make every bolt that is fired or in an enemy locked, but I
think there's a window before they become locked where they can be claimed so YMMV. Like Urist sees Tulon fire a bolt and as its in the air he claims it, but it won't be forbidden until it hits. Weird stuff like that.
TL;DR Bolts are broken when a dwsrg makes a poor decision on the bolts he wants to equip. Reduce his chance of making a poor decision and make a new squad if his poor decision can't be rectified.

Operational security (OPSEC) is a security and risk management process that prevents sensitive information from getting into the wrong hands.
Secure Operating Systems Aside from the normal, everyday Windows, Macintosh, or Linux distros, these are operating systems that are renowned for the security pre-built within them. Many people are weary of switching from windows and I understand that I was a skid once but it's like dating a black girl once you try it theres no going back. The only real thing that I couldn't do on linux is game certain games, but espically in Qubes OS (More below) its super easy to set up a windows virtual machine inside your linux machine, dual booting is an option as well. But the fact is windows is hard to harden and espically if you're one to download random shit off forums or telegram (you're here) youre device is at risk and these linux operating systems are built to be secure. Windows mac are built to collect as much data from you as possible.
Tails OS Tails, also known as The Amnesic Incognito Live System, is an open-source OS designed to predominantly be ran via live disc like a CD/DVD, USB, or SD card. The main operation of Tails is aimed at keeping your privacy and anonymity safe while leaving as little trace of use as possible. Since it is an amnesiac OS, nothing is left behind every time you reboot such as save files, new software, and realistically leaves a clean slate when you need to power down. Tails default networking application is TOR (TheOnionRouter) which allows the user to stay encrypted through whatever network they are currently connected to. Many of Tails pre-installed software come pre-configured with security in mind such as the Pidgin IM client which is setup up with OTR for Off-the-Record Messaging or the TOR Browser with all the necessary plugins already added into it. There are many more features to this amazing OS found on their website. If you want to stay on windows this is a good choice for a secure virtual machine or to use off a live boot usb. But really wouldn't work as a daily drver. Tails Link:
https://tails.boum.org/ Whonix OS Whonix is another operating system which is aimed on your privacy, security, and anonymity. It is based on three things: The TOR network, Debian Linux, and security by isolation. The creator's of Whonix stand by the fact that DNS leaks are not possible and malware with root privileges can not find out the user's real IP according to their website. There are two different parts to Whonix itself: Whonix-Gateway & Whonix-Workstation which is on a completely isolated network with TOR as its only connection possibilities. The Whonix-Gateway is exactly as it sounds, the gateway to the internet and all TOR connections. The Whonix-Workstation is the actual desktop environment you as a user will interact with during daily usage. The two parts of Whonix sync with each other to make sure the connection is secure as possible while also making sure the two are coinciding correctly. This OS is mainly used within Virtual Machines but can be applied in many different ways. I use this in a virtual machine daily. Whonix Link:
https://www.whonix.org/ Qubes OS (Used daily by Edward Snowden and myself) Qubes, is a third operating system which is mostly aimed on system security. Qubes OS is best described as a Xen distribution running multiple virtual Linux domains. Xen is a extremely stable and mature "bare-metal" type 1 hypervisor. This type of virtualization is analogous to what you may be picturing when using a product like VirtualBox with one important difference. A type 1 hypervisor has no operating system running "below" it which can be compromised. Xen is installed on the "bare metal" and this architecture therefore allows Qubes to create separate multiple virtual machines ("domains", in Xen parlance) in which you run your applications. This ensures that risky applications can not affect trusted applications, or even write to the underlying file system. This degree of separation doesn’t provide much anonymity in itself, but it does provide a significant degree of protection from malware spread. If you for example end up being infected with malware from a bad website, or by falling prey to an email phishing scam, it would be very hard for that malware to spread outside of the domain it is in, meaning only that virtual machine or ""domain" would be affected and not the entire operating system. I use this daily and it has whonix built in which I love. It runs off debian 11 and fedora 36 vms by default, but you can use anything you want. Its a little rough with nvidia drivers, but does require an above average machine I have 32gb of ram and an i7-7700 and it runs like a breeze.
ParrotOS (Good for laptops) Parrot Security (Parrot OS, Parrot) is a Free and Open source GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian Stable designed for security experts, developers and privacy aware people. Also, besides being compatible with just about every operating system and mobile / ipad device platform in the world, ProtonVPN is well known for their Secure Core architecture which gives their secure VPN service the very unique ability to defend against any network-based attacks. Secure Core protects your connection by routing your traffic through multiple servers before leaving their network which means an advanced adversary over who can monitor the network traffic at the exit server and also no one will be able to discover the true IP address of a ProtonVPN user nor match your browsing activity to that IP. All Secure Core servers are also located in hardened data centers in Switzerland, Iceland, and Sweden which is protected by strong privacy laws, and also operated on ProtonVPN's own dedicated networks. Also, besides being compatible with just about every operating system and mobile / ipad device platform in the world, Panama is a country with no mandatory data retention laws and also does not participate in the Five Eyes or Fourteen Eyes alliances laws. NordVPN also have over 5400 servers in 59 countries with very fast, stable and Military-grade encrypted connections and with multiple different secure network protocols and specialty servers. Plus an advanced Secure CyberSec technology architecture which means enhanced security, enhaced privacy, better performance, faster speeds and more control. NordVPN Link:
https://nordvpn.com/ DNS Leaking While you are on a VPN, you want all traffic coming from your computer to go through the encrypted network. If any of your traffic leaks outside this encrypted network, people can then log that information which is not good at all. The Domain Name System (DNS) translates domain names such as HackForums.net into IP addresses such as 190.93.250.145 which is required to send packets of data on the Internet. When you try to access a specific website, before you go there you computer must interact with the DNS server to request the IP address. Internet service providers (ISPs) usually use specific DNS servers which log and record specific activities you do while on the Internet. The main issue here is when you use a VPN, sometimes the OS will default to the normal DNS servers instead of the DNS servers your VPN provides. DNS leaks while using a VPN can make you feel safe while you are truly leaking data that you don't want leaked. This is a major issue which is why all VPNs I listed above have some sort of DNS Leak protection, a must have when stay anonymous. You can test to see if you are DNS leaking at the links below. IPLeak Link:

SOCKS4/SOCKS5 Servers SOCKS, which stands for Socket Secure, is an Internet Protocol that routes network packets between a client and server through a proxy server and allows you for sessions to traverse securely across firewall security. SOCKS4 & 5 are different types that do slightly different things. The main difference between the two is SOCKS4 only supports TCP application while SOCKS5 supports both TCP and UDP. With added supports, authentication methods, and domain name resolution, the main outgoing SOCKS proxy are SOCKS4 proxy. You won't be able to use UDP applications but it will be to your benefit overall. So if you are in need of a proxy instead of a VPN for a specific application, try to keep this in mind.
Tor
What is Tor? Tor, which stands for 'The Onion Router', is a non-profit group of volunteer-operated servers that allows people to improve their privacy, privacy tools, and security on the Internet. The Tor network works by moving your traffic across various nodes through a series of virtual tunnels rather than making a direct connection, allowing anyone to share vital information without compromising one's identity. Anyone trying to trace you would see the traffic going through various Tor nodes on the network rather than directly from your computer. All that is needed to access the Tor network and .onion links (hidden service sites only accessible on Tor network) is the Tor Browser. The Tor Browser comes ready to use and routes everything you do through the Tor network without any configuration needed although I'd recommend a few steps to take which you will see later in this thread.
Tor Benefits Tor has many benefits for all kinds of privacy issues people face in the world we live in. Many journalists, hackers, or people living in a dictatorship with a lot of censorship can use the Tor network to anonymize your traffic and access sites you may not have been able to before all while being absolutely FREE. Tor is also very useful for anyone looking to keep their online activity hidden from other people or your ISP. Tor can also be used to host sites which contain hidden services only accessible by other Tor users and sometimes needing an invitation to access for added security.
Browser Configuration Although the Tor Browser comes pre-configured and can be used right away, there are a few more steps that people should take to secure it even more. Here is a list of addons which should be used within the Tor browser:
HTTPS Everywhere - HTTPS Everywhere is an open-source extension created in collaboration by the Tor Project and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. It allows you to automatically make any website which supports HTTPS, use the secure HTTPS connection instead of the normal HTTP.
NoScript - NoScript is a web browser extension which provides extra protection for Firefox, Seamonkey and other mozilla-based web browsers. This free and open source add-on allows JavaScript, Java, Flash and other plugins to be executed ONLY by trusted web sites of YOUR choice in order to protect your privacy and security. NoScript also provides the most powerful anti-XSS and anti-Clickjacking protection ever available in a web browser. (This will break most websites)
Search Engine - Although many people use Google as their main search engine for normal web browsing, Google shows a lack of care for users privacy in general. Also, Google is notorious for tracking clicks on result pages that you search with alongside sometimes having you log into GMail to access certain things. To prevent that here are a few search engines you can set to default instead.

Exit Node Security Warning!! One thing I need to talk about is how other entities may be able to see your traffic over the Tor network. On Tor, instead of taking a direct route from your computer to the destination, the Tor network routes a random path through many Tor relays to encrypt and hide your data. Once your at the last relay of the path, this is called the exit node. The exit node is the one that actually makes the connection to the destination server. Tor, by design, cannot encrypt data between the exit node and destination server so whoever may be in control of the exit node has the ability to capture the traffic passing through it. The best way to combat this is to use End-to-End encryption which I will explain more about in the Encryption section later on in this thread.
Invisible Internet Project (I2P) I wasn't sure about adding this in but I think it needs to be explained and talked about a little bit. I2P is a decentralized anonymizing network built on similar principles to Tor except was designed to be a self-contained darknet. Users still connect using P2P encrypted tunnels but there are still many differences.
Distributed peer-to-peer model. Garlic routing (encrypts multiple messages together, harder traffic analysis). Uni-directional tunnels so incoming and outgoing traffic are seperate. Uses packet switching instead of circuit switching. Uses its own API rather than SOCKS like Tor. This makes it technically more secure than Tor.
Aside from being very secure, it will also be much faster than Tor overall. The best way to explain I2P is as a internet within an internet. One thing to mention is I2P does not hide the fact you are using the service at all. If you don't like Tor for some reason, this is another option to check out. I2P Link:
https://geti2p.net/en/ Encryption Encryption is a vital part of computer security when it comes to important documents, personal data, or internet traffic. It allows you to securely protect data that you don't want anyone else to see or have access to. When it comes to privacy and anonymity, encryption plays one of the most important roles possible for securing data being transferred over the internet. Here are just a few types of encryption which everyone should be using.
PGP Encryption PGP, Pretty Good Privacy, is a program used for the encryption/decryption of email over the Internet but also serves as a way to authenticate messages with digital signatures and encrypted stored files. PGP uses a variant on the public key system. It starts with each user having an encryption key that is publicly known and a private key only that user has. Each person sends a message, encrypting it with their public key. Then when the message is received, the message is decrypted using the user's private key. To make this the encryption process much faster, PGP uses an algorithm which encrypts the message, then uses the public key to encrypt the shorter key. There are two versions of PGP available: RSA & Diffie-Hellman. Both of these have different algorithms for encryption but as just as secure as the other. Sending digital signatures is a similar process but creates a hash using the user's name and other signature information. The hash is encrypted with the user's private key. They recipient uses the sender's public key to decrypt the hash code. If it matches, the recipient knows that this is an authentic file.

https://keybase.io/ Whole Disk Encryption Disk encryption is software which protects your information by turning it into unreadable code which can't be cracked easily by unwanted users. Disk encryption uses specific software or hardware to encrypt all data that goes on a disk or a disk volume. Whole disk encryption is when everything on the disk is encrypted as well as all the programs that can encrypt bootable OS partitions. One thing to note is computers using Master Boot Record (MBR) will NOT have that part of the disk encrypted. Whole disk encryption has many benefits to it. Number one is ALL parts of the disk are encrypted, even the swap space and temporary files which may contain sensitive information. By using full disk encryption, you don't have the chance of accidentally not encrypting a file since everything is indeed encrypted regardless. Lastly, by destroying the cryptography keys, it will render the data completely useless. It's not needed on everybody's computers since everyone has different need, but definitely recommended. Most people have used software called TrueCrypt in the past but that software is no longer being developed. This is always changing but heres a pretty up to date list of options:
https://www.lifewire.com/free-full-disk-...ms-2619180 *Warning* Please make sure to backup your entire system before attempting to do whole disk encryption in the case of a failure during the process.
File Encryption File encryption follows the same procedure as whole disk encryption but instead of the whole disk, you are specifically encrypted an individual file or a whole folder. File encryption is a much simpler process that whole disk encryption and can be done with the same software, VeraCrypt. One thing to note is that with VeraCrypt, you can make a much larger encrypted volume (basically extra storage) to put files in and encrypt it as a whole. For instance, I have an external hard-drive which I made a 200GB encrypted volume for so once I type the password for that volume, I can drop anything in and close it. It will now be encrypted until I unlock that volume at another point in time.
https://privacy.net/best-free-encryption...are-tools/ Encrypted Backups I won't be saying much about backups but I suggest everyone to keep backs and then encrypt them with this software for added security and to have that safety of being able to restore your system if something were to go wrong. File/Download Security File and download security is not something the average user thinks about which is why I wanted to write this section to explain a little bit about it. Hopefully after reading this section you'll understand more about why file and download security should be a higher priority than most since it's something the average user will use most.
https://alternativeto.net/category/backu...ed-backup/ Metadata Metadata is data that describes other data. Now that may sound confusing but think about it from a files perspective. Author, date created, date modified, and file size are simple examples of metadata that almost all documents carry. On top of that, images, videos, Excel sheets, and web pages all carry their own personalized metadata. Metadata is something which could easily give away personal information that you wouldn't even realize is there. The biggest one that people don't realize is simple pictures taken on your cellphone camera.Depending on if you have location on or not, metadata can even give GPS coordinates of where the picture was taken. All files contains this sensitive information within them and most people don't even realize it exists. Thankfully, there are tools out there which can be used to find and delete that information from files. This software is called MAT: Metadata Anonymization Toolkit and will help aid in the removal of metadata from the files that you want to clean. MAT Link:
https://mat.boum.org/ Deleting Files/Information Correctly I feel like there are many users currently out there who think that by simply deleting a file, it's magically gone from your computer. This is NOT true! When you delete something from your computer, the only thing you are doing is deleting where it was located on the drive. It's still within the drive but the location data is no longer there. This is the reason why file recovery software exists, to grab those files you "deleted" and get them back. The correct way to delete something (file shredding) is by overwriting the data. One thing you must understand is that by overwriting previous data/files, this doesn't remove a files location but instead makes it unrecoverable. For the average user, overwriting a file once should be enough although the NSA recommends 3 times, while the DoD recommends 7 times. It all comes down to preference but some people believe that when you only go over a file once, you miss some of the data so by going over it many times, you get rid of the data that is left over. Here are some of the tools many people use for correct file cleaning and deletion.

MD5/SHA-1 Checksums Before learning what a checksum is, you first need to know what MD5 & SHA-1 are first. MD5 & SHA-1 are common cryptographic hash functions with MD5 being a 128-bit (16-byte) hash value while SHA-1 is a 160-bit (20-byte) hash value. With these two hash type, we can use them to verify data integrity of a file/download. After downloading a file or software is when you are able to check the checksum of the file. The checksum is where the contents of the file get thrown into a mathematical algorithm and output a specific MD5/SHA-1 string. This method of verifying downloads/files is not as good as PGP + signature file but if you cannot use that method, this is a good second. Almost all Linux distros have the commands sha1sum and md5sum built into it. All you do is run these commands against the file in question and it will output the checksum string for you. Once you do this, all you do is compare that to what the download should of been and you should be able to verify if the download was authentic or not.
https://support.quest.com/essentials/too...y-checksum One thing to note is that MD5 has known collisions. With enough force, this allows MD5 to be broken into. Social Related Within this section I will be talking about everything related to interacting with people socially via messaging of some sorts. This section is my opinion on what should be used and may differ from person to person. This will give you a general idea of what you want to be doing while using social related messaging services.
XMPP XMPP stands for Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol and is used for communications for message-oriented middleware based on the Extensible Markup Language (XML). Many more people are starting to use this as a main way of communication using programs such as Pidgin to accomplish this. Pidgin is an open-source multi-platform IM client which most people will recommend for XMPP. The main reason is because Pidgin has a simple plugin which you can download that allows you to incorporate Off-the-Record (OTR) messaging into it. OTR allows you to have private conversations over XMPP by using encryption, authentication, and the fact that messages you send do not have digital signatures that a third party can check for. This is a must use plugin/step you need when using any type of XMPP client. Pidgin Link:

IRC IRC, which stands for Internet Relay Chat, is an application layer protocol that facilitates the transfer of messages in the form of text. IRC has been around for a very long time but is still widely used by people all over. Most IRCs consist of a community or group of people with a specific goal/topic in mind. To connect to a specific IRC, you need two main things: the IP to the server and the channel (which has a # infront of it like #channel). There are plenty of public IRCs but most will be private depending on the topic of conversation. When it comes to security and IRC, there are more steps that need to be taken that with XMPP, so I will link a good guide to follow when setting up IRC and explain some good IRC clients to use.

Signal All communications on Signal—including one-to-one messages, group messages, file transfers, photos, voice calls, and video calls—are end-to-end encrypted. Only the people involved in the communication can see them. The encryption happens between the individual devices using Signal. The company that operates Signal could not see these messages even if it wanted to. Signal actually created its own encryption protocol for this. Even if Signal is subject to a subpoena on you and forced to disclose what it knows about you, the company knows almost nothing about you and your Signal activity. Signal could reveal only your account’s phone number, last connection date, and account creation time. Check it out!

2023.04.02 15:03 Ironwolf99 Lectric XPedition in depth impression
| I haven't seen a ton of particularly detailed reviews from not-youtubers on the Lectric XPedition yet (but maybe I'm not looking hard enough) so I figured I'd throw mine out. ** --- SHIPPING AND CUSTOMER SERVICE--- ** I bought this bike with the single battery a couple weeks ago. Figured the range was pretty solid without the extra $300 and honestly it wasnt super financially responsible to buy this in the first place anyway. First off it shipped and arrived much faster than I expected. I bought it on a Friday and it showed up on the following Thursday. However there's a couple things here I was a bit salty about: 1) They ship with FedEx. As a result the delivery window was wide which made it hard to plan for, then it didn't even show up in that window. When it did show up and I had to rush home from work to avoid porch-pirates, the box was beat to shit. Not a great start, but the bike looked clean, and unscathed. 2) Opened up the box and it didn't come with the essentials kit that was meant to be included. This is extra weird cause I didn't get a separate tracking number. 3) The bike was not unscathed by the packaging. The rear wheel was broken, specifically where the brake rotor connected to the hub. It also sounded crunchy as hell if you tried to use the motor. So this turns into a customer service review now. I immediately called customer service, told them what happened. The person I got didn't seem particularly knowledgeable about how bicycles work in general, but she was super attentive and ultimately said I should bring it to a shop which honestly was the right thing to do even if I had an expert on the line. The next part goes super easy. Brought it to a shop, they determined the motor was broke, Lectric sent me a free motor, bike got fixed, Lectric paid for the shop labor. Good stuff by Lectric, bad stuff by FedEx but that's not surprising. ** --- THE ACTUAL BIKE REVIEW --- ** After I everything is ready, I ride it to work for the first time. Now an important piece of context is that I got the XPedition because I have to bring gear back and forth from work. The trip It's 12 miles to work and 12 back. Since it was my first time riding to work and I didn't think to buy a phone holder for GPS I ended up riding a total of 28 miles at mostly pedal assist 3 and only using throttle to start from a stop. Weight The back of the bike was loaded with my work gear that is about 60 lbs and I had a backpack that is about 10 lbs, I weigh 160, and the bike weighs 70lbs I believe. So that's about 230lbs payload and 300 lbs in total. Pretty significant. The bike did fantastic. I mean it was really a fantastic ride. Didn't feel like I was carrying any weight at all unless I was stopped. Battery However I didn't expect how much the battery life was drained by the extra weight, and on the ride home it died. Took 30 minutes to get to work, and 2 hours to get home (also due to other route issues like closed Greenways but still). Lectric's website says single battery gets 40 mile range on PAS 3 though so getting 28 miles wasn't that bad in hindsight. That being said, assuming you're using a cargo bike for cargo, this bike is barely ridable when it's dead due to the weight. That's not really a knock against it cause the motor is the point but it's worth considering if you're thinking that range isn't important cause you can just ride it normally. You can if it doesn't die with any cargo but not if you're using it as intended. It's also worth noting that this isn't really an issue for me, it just means now I have to bring the charger back and forth from work. Comfort It's been two days since I last rode it and my ass is still sore. Get a better seat. The actual feel of riding it isn't bad though. It is fairly squirly when loaded up, but I also had a hard time keeping the load even. Which brings me to: The Cargo Rack It's narrow. Like I watched reviews and looked at pictures and still didn't totally get how narrow. That's a good thing for storage however is a bad thing for trying to use the rack. If you have something with a semi-rigid bottom it's not really a huge issue but soft bags cargo is very difficult to secure. You really need to have some sort of platform or basket or milk crate to keep your load centered and secure. That's not too hard though and there's plenty of places to strap onto. Misc - Headlight sucks but works. They sell better replacements though.
- It's big but easier to store than I expected. I live in a townhouse and keep it in a closet upright cause it's fairly narrow with the handlebars folded.
- The brakes are super strong, which I thought was excessive until I got to 30 mph. It's very much appreciated.
- Looks pretty. Lots of compliments, which I didn't expect from the types I work with.
- The accessories Lectric sells don't seem particularly over priced so that's nice cause you'll want them. I'm still a bit annoyed they couldn't include a water bottle holder.
- Also I bought the XL pannier bags, and they haven't shipped yet which is annoying but on the website when I bought them it said they wouldn't ship until April so at least they were upfront about it.
- Best commute of my life. At least until it died but that's my fault tbh.
- No suspension, is very bumpy, but not bad on decent roads.
- Battery isn't UL-Listed, but I'm pretty sure it's got an EN standard of some kind. I just don't charge it without checking on it occasionally which you should do anyway.

2023.04.02 14:59 rachatouille I'd really appreciate feedback on this novella that I'm writing (~6000, modernist fiction)
This is the first part of my novella, Lady Lu (the title is still in the works). A brief synopsis: this novella follows a week in the life of Lu, a poor cardboard collector who lives in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. As she encounters bizarre obsessions her mind indulges in and an amplified existence her body endures, she is forced to witness a world and a self that has changed beyond recognition.
Thank you so much if you chose to read it and provide feedback. It's a bit long, sorry, but I hope it's worth the read.
I.
Her hands can’t feel much now, for years of harsh tsaiguabu soaked in watered down dish soap, grainy trash bags, and surprisingly sharp cardboard edges have carved out valleys of veins and wrinkled palms and faded lifelines; they have dulled her senses. She can’t yet make up her mind as to whether she preferred that or not, because sometimes, numbness is the best antidote to incurable pain, but other times, the monotonous humdrum of that anesthesia takes away the simple joy of sensation, that which can be found in a slew of cold water washing away the sweat from a back-breaking load of cardboard. It is hard for Reality to keep her attention; she can no longer tell cotton from polyester by touch, or hot from cold. At least this helps her to better sink into the comfort of her bare stained mattress in the sweltering heat waves. They go up to forty degrees sometimes in the summer (some kooky old neighbors went out to put frying pans on the asphalt to see if the eggs could really cook and yes, they did cook) and old man Xu Pin right next door isn’t the most pleasant-smelling fella.
Still, the snap-crackle of fan blades spinning in a stumbling staccato rhythm welcomes her back to Reality. Although the fiery defiance of dawn’s sun rays has just begun to pierce through grimy windows, there are already voices echoing the halls. Some, like her, are cardboard collectors, whose work hours start from sunrise; some are restless sleepers, who make their early stirrings everyone else’s problem, loud bastards, the lot; and some are already offering their consciousness up for sacrifice. They cough their lungs out, day and night, a raspy version of a heartbeat in the background.
Lu pulls open the plywood sliding doors to let some sun into her windowless room. These plywood rooms are the newer areas of the subdivided apartments; on the other side naked mesh wire separates the exposed residents. Right opposite from her, she can see Xu Pin with a glass pipe, obscured by the half-opened door at certain angles.
“Lu! How the hell are you on this fine morning? Getting ready for work?” he says, gaunt face spasming in time with his stresses and intonation.
“Old brother, I’m telling you, stay off the drugs, ay. Your liver isn’t what it used to be.”
He waves it off, cracking a toothy laugh.“It’s not like I got much to lose.” Xu Pin laughs a lot, and it always comes from deep in his belly.
“Have you forgotten about Wednesday braised pork?” Lu replies and he concedes, laughing again, but once she’s turned her back, faint wisps of milky smoke waft over.
This conversation used to be an everyday occurrence, but soon enough Lu gave up because he’s heard the lectures enough times to know for himself, and if the glass pipe finds itself lit again in the middle of the night, then she supposes that’s his response. She understands though; you gotta do what you gotta do to instill just enough life back in these fizzled-out corpse-like bodies; it’s a defibrillator; it’s a half-plugged life support. Hers is work; her knuckles and stocky build are hard-knock strong, made for work. To not put herself to work would be a waste! She knows those fancy suit-clad men turn their noses up at her carts of cardboard when they aren’t ignoring her, but if the world was really left to their hands, the landfills would do as its name suggests: fill up the land. They want everything to be shiny new new, fresh out the oven, practically still smelling of the factories and the small overworked hands that assembled them.
She pulls out her folded cart from behind the fan, ducking under her multicolored hangers dangling on the pipes that lined the walls. Her walls are sparse, save some hooks for plastic bags, narrow shelves nailed there, and a calendar, to which the page with yesterday’s date still clings on, as if afraid to face the new day. She doesn’t have many material possessions, partially because her room is already struggling to fit a mattress and a shelf – any more and she’d be buried alive when they eventually topple over – and partially because she doesn’t see much value in material items. She only needs her fan to shoo away the heat waves and her TV to get through days when work ends early because the gods smiled upon her rival instead, Chan jie, that sneaky little somethin fast-walking to steal all her cardboard. Not many options other than her good old TV to keep her mind running: she would prop a lumpy pillow up, lie down, and stay there unmoving for hours on end, filling up her brain and body with news, gossip, travesties, anything really, to push out all the bits that belong to her. She wouldn’t have anyone to talk to at this hour either; in the afternoon, not many people would still be in their rooms — either they are working or finding a place, any place, to take a break from home. If she has enough energy, she’d get out her best outfit, comb through her hair and tie it up into a neat bun, and turn an Ikea-framed photograph that normally faced the walls around to talk to it. The photograph is frayed at the edges, the color fading to a sort of bruise-purple. It isn’t a very good picture if one pays closer attention: it’s out of focus and the boy in the picture is making the nastiest of faces, which she had told him a million upon million times not to do – “don’t put the same fingers you just put in your nose in your mouth!” Facing the wall is also a one-eyed teddy bear looking like it’s been to hell or worse, gifted to her from someone long ago. The cotton filling is ripped out in some places, so she sewed it back together, but it still threatens to bulge out of every seam. In short, the bear’s seen better days.
In any case, it’s not as though she has much money to spare for amenities after treating herself to a hearty bowl of braised pork belly a week, which is what’s kept her going for so long; really don’t underestimate the power of a warm meal. Although she has been the best cardboard collector on Yen Chow Street for three years straight now (in her opinion; there isn’t an official ranking), there’s not much money in it – she knows that. She had flipped through mountainous stacks of newspaper clippings, scramble of phone numbers scratched on post-it notes or the backs of receipts (that she saved up with an irrational dream of winning the lottery in mind), but she was met with voice mails or dismissive promises that scheduled a job interview that would never go anywhere. She couldn’t read and write either, so there went half the jobs she qualified for, and Wenhan had tried to teach her, in between loads of laundry or while she waited for the chicken thighs to marinate, but Lord, she could not tell this stroke from that line for the life of her. Her little brother, the smart one of the family, enjoyed the prestige at the top, while Lu’s teachers only sang praises of her inhuman cleaning speed and diligence for learning: respectable but misplaced.
“If you’re so good at cleaning,” her mother had declared, “then why don’t you come help me with our chores?”
Her father stood up from the stained armchair, which had been a loyal friend on lonely beer-filled nights to him. “No use for a half-brained girl to waste time there. I don’t want Lu-tang sissying around with a bunch of those snobby educated folks either but your mother begged.”
“Your father is right. You’re better off here, Lulu.”
There was no point in fighting them; it would take a million horses to bend their iron will. Lu used to think that their brains were once filled with liquid cement that solidified and hardened and cracked. In the meantime, she would do as they say, maintain peace, feign obedience, until her opening came and she would run without stopping all the way to the city, even if she were barefoot, even if the roads were soaked. The promises that her aunties had chirped about, glossy men and painted women, and the mysterious dangers her ah-ma had sensationalized, the bat-wielding criminals lurking around every corner, enticed her. And when the chance did come, she really didn’t hesitate. Freedom came at a hefty price, tooth and nail. Failure was not an option, and as long as she stays in the city, she hasn’t failed. She won’t give them the satisfaction.
She slides on red plastic slippers, the same ones the rich kids use to squash crickets out of boredom or cruelty and creeps down, rung by rung, down the ladder. This apartment is packed with tenants, sixteen of them to be exact, and though Lu moved in first six years ago, she’s still considered one of the newer residents. Only the top bunks were available at that time. And now whenever Yui Fong tai-tai complained of her heavy-footed earbud-despising upstairs neighbor thumping around at odd hours in the night, Lu would count her blessings and store this memory for when she curses the rickety metal ladder. In general, noise is a constant here: these coffin rooms are not forgiving of familial conflicts, or even the faint kow-pows of old kung-fu movies to remind them of an earlier, more mythical and therefore better time. They are stacked and crammed like kennels, fit for a dog, the rich would probably jeer during their fancy dinner parties. No, they wouldn’t waste time for such a topic, pitiful to them for sure – in Sham Shui Po, the scavengers scrabbling for scraps are swept away into these monstrous buildings: out of sight, out of mind.
Just last week, in fact, the government posted a clearance notice for the homeless occupying the bridge a few blocks away – really, eviction would be the right word for it, because it was their home, and wasn’t the government the one who said home is where the heart is with a cheery smile (well, she consoled herself, at least they will get more smile lines than anyone). It was because they were making quite a disturbance, because of all the sins, disgust had the strongest stench to it. She knew a lady who stayed there for a while once upon a time; she was always fired up about something, she remembered. That lady got up at six a.m. sharp every day to go for a jog, then came back with a renewed passion for life. She would ring Lu up, saying there was a horde of tourists near the bridge and she would talk trash about them, which Grandma Lu was always secretly giddy about. If a particularly ostentatious tourist were decked in white fox fur in Hong Kong of all places, they’d pray to Earth God for it to get hotter or rainy, at their own expense. “She’d look like a wet sewer cat,” said the lady. “More like a clump of ji dan gao stamped on by muddy boots,” said Lu. “God, these rich people! In this heat?” “In this air?” They’d have a good laugh, and a good laugh was the best medicine she’d tried so far. But staring was an abominable crime (this only applies to one direction), and the rich tourists felt slighted by this attention, so whispers of rumors that eviction was near flew around. Lu didn’t understand their annoyance; wasn’t the point of wearing such luxuries to show off? for people to gawk at? Sure there’d be negative attention amongst, but this was a small price for opulence, and evidence for one’s existence.
She went to the bridge a week later to see if any of them stuck around – that lady would, wouldn’t she? – but it was empty as a properly finished bowl of rice, dog-licked-clean. Keeping an eye out during her cardboard runs was easy enough, but she could not find a good enough reason for herself to justify any more searching, unless she admitted to herself that this lady made some impression on her akin to friendship, but for her, such things were weak links. One tear, one wound was enough; the disease would spread, and hopelessness would infect you. What she called hopelessness though, others called enlightenment. Clarity! they whispered, rubbing their hands together in cold winters, or fanning their sweaty necks in summer; as they jumped down Tsing Ma Bridge, they embraced the air, and though none of them were able to recount the tale, she assumed that flying was the most wonderful experience they had had, a last hurrah of sorts.
Palming the concrete wall surface wedged against her body, she squeezed her way down the hallway. The kitchen came into view; so did Yui Fong, hunched over a cutting board, who always said ‘early bird gets the worm’ and did as she preached.
“Oh, smells delicious!” Lu sidestepped onto grubby tiles.
“Don’t you lie to me now, Lu po-po; I only make steamed or boiled dishes.” Yui Fong had tried to get everyone on this floor to do the same, to no avail alas, because stir-fry glossed in oil and dripping in sauces was a siren’s call. But just wait, they’ll regret it; once they have a pat of their belly and take a look at the walls dotted with browning stains like burn holes in paper, the siren rears her head. Oil was impossible to scrub off, Lu had tried and will testify to this, let alone sixteen times that.
“How I admire you for it. Before I forget, do you want some turnips for tonight? The ah-bei there told me there’s a fresh shipment coming in today. I’ll be stopping by the market anyway so it’ll be no trouble.”
Yui Fong stopped her stirring. “Ah you’re too kind, Lu. That would be great. They say the secret to living to ninety-nine years old is turnip soup. I will save some for you.”
“Thank you, thank you. But ninety-nine years is too damn long for me, ha-ha.”
She catches herself eyeing the coffee jar; it’s been so long since she’s felt that miraculous shiver of energy, since her last doctor visit burdened her with the knowledge that her heart was ill-suited for caffeine. She resists; she’ll save that for an especially hard day.
Once again Lu finds her palm hugging the wall as she makes her way downstairs. Opening the main door – as always Fortune Guest House and fancy Vegetarian’s Paradise stand imposing. The sun splashes onto the city, just like the rain had done just moments ago (such is summer weather), the shine making the city look like it were wrapped in cellophane. Perhaps it is; she has never touched any of those new skyscrapers; it could very well be still in its protective gear to shield itself from the dirty outside world. Mannequin-like people in it safe and sound too.
One of the wheels on her cart is faulty, so it skids along the puddles spasming like a kid about to piss his pants in class. She hurries along the length of Yu Chau Street, stopping occasionally to pick up a spare cardboard here or there, but her main goal is the big Seven-Eleven two blocks down that hands stacks of them out and oh here the phrase ‘early bird gets the worm’ truly applies.
Big fruit lies in store, big fruit, she tells herself as she resists the urge to stop at some smaller stores first. She remembers this story her mother once told her – all her bedtime stories were just a cover for some secret moral lesson – the Lord says to Man, “here, pick the most beautiful rock you see. There are lots of precious rocks ahead of you, diamonds galore, but there is no turning back. Pick only one, and pick wisely.” The man passes by pebbles, then big slabs of rock, rubies, emeralds – now we’re getting somewhere! The world is his oyster, and oh the pearls it’ll offer to him! they make his mouth water! Man thinks, as long as he keeps going (the saying patience is a virtue drolled on in his head), the treasures can only get better. So he fights temptation, strangles it beyond its dying breath, and forgoes diamonds for something better; there’s always better. Tipping the balance, eradicating satisfaction end in crumbled hopes and clumps of dirt, which lay in wait for him at the end.
If she had the chance, Lu would never pass up tangibility for some abstract possibility in the clouds, in the fog. It’s given her good times, perhaps not excellent but good enough for her. So she gave hurried thanks, snatched the cardboard and didn’t bother to tie up the stack with pink plastic string, stumbling with her cart down down down.
And there she stands, in all her ghastly atrociousness, one hand on a leaning Pisa-tower of cardboard, one hand on her hip, smirking at Lu. The devil in plastic quilted jacket! Lu tsks and slinks off to queue for any remaining scraps.
“If it isn’t Lu po-po!”
“If it isn’t Chan jie,” she wishes.
“Got some more hours of sleep today, did you?”
“That must mean I look particularly good today then. You should try it, more sleep I mean. It’s not good to wear yourself out,” Lu entertains her. The alternative, staring at the dizzying traffic in the streets, isn’t a strong contender.
Finally it’s her turn and as she predicts, there isn’t much cardboard left. Well, bit by bit is how the pile grows. And now she’s determined, out of spite, to gather at least more than Chan jie; it won’t do to just submit to her gloating, no it won’t. The shadows tower over her; it must still be early morning. They cast down on metal garage doors, which sever them into wavering static, a little to the left or the right. Lu turns the corner onto Tai Nan street. Leather stench hits her without warning, recognizing her veteran status. Leather may be pretty but it sure doesn’t agree with the heat; at this rate it’ll taste worse than a piece of that over-boiled beef shoulder she had the displeasure of chewing at Fat Man Chou’s. She sees the signs hovering above, this company and that – Tong-De, Mian-Fong, they all sound the same to her – extending past where they’re welcome; they look like news headlines framing her. Imagine that! Her, smack in the middle of Headline Daily’s front page, still with the flowing black hair she oiled up and massaged every night in the dark, twirling around in that yellow sundress, some hot new celebrity on her arm. And the reporters, they’ll crowd in droves, “Lady Lu, look here!”, “No, here! Tell us, who are you wearing?” And she’ll say proudly, spine straight-up, “My mamma made it,” teeth all gleaming in the flash, white and pearly still…
It doesn’t have to be that; she’s never been a fame chaser. She could also join the other side and don a pair of glasses, notepad in hand, expose the corruption in glass towers and the seedy underbelly gorged with triad legends. A glimpse of a tattooed arm or the lack of an arm (for if you betrayed them, their infamous meat cleaver would kiss the outer skin, then force its way into the sinews, a brandishing of tough love) would spark rumors. It is in their nature that rumors exaggerate, but this time Lu isn’t so sure; the Triad’s name precedes them; there must be a reason. Aside from their chopping prowess, they apparently also had the magical ability to induce amnesia, like wizards! Lu’s seen on the news one day that all five eyewitnesses who were supposed to testify against a Triad leader suddenly succumbed to memory loss; at least with memory you’re more likely to get that back, as opposed to an arm. Well, those are all old dreams; she reminds herself to not get lost in the once-upon-a-times. One thing comes and one thing goes: even though she does live near the dark side now, her youth has dissolved like the black pigment in her hair. She’s much too concerned about getting by day to day to get into any of that.
To make up for her overactive imagination, Lu’s developed a skill to absentmindedly pick up cardboard like a drug-sniffing dog. Her tendons take over, and she lets them; she can do it blindfolded even. It’s a skill as worthy of admiration as, say, sprinting a one-hundred-meter dash. Come on, let’s see that Usain Bolt haul these stacks! (She’s impressed herself with her outstanding memory; apparently hearing the name once on the news, in passing too, is enough!)
Lu sifts through her latest cardboard conquests tugging at the hastily-tied strings. Her trusty pen-knife is always within reach in her pocket, which she checks daily to make sure there are no holes. First she slices the cardboard down with the precision of a butcher; corrugated wrinkles smiling at her. Then, using her fists, she pounds down to flatten them, stay there now don’t you move, she warned. The cardboard defers to her at once. Once they were spectacular too; this box once carried Korean strawberries in its arms, sailing across more seas than she’s seen; and this one? parts of a Philips lamp; then, cram school workbooks. Whatever was in them has gone on to live, not necessarily better lives, but living nonetheless.
Not before long though, her cart starts to wobble more than the stacks can take. They’re threatening to tip over at any minute now, so taking them to a nearby recycling depot is the best course of action, Lu decides. She’s saving up for a new cart, one of them fancy ones with a bell so she wouldn’t have to clear her throat to scrape out any hoarseness, and yell with a voice unexpected of such a short woman, “Excuse me please! Let me through for a second, thank you!” It’s tough to compete with caged canaries squawking, cars honking, and market-people squabbling. Plus, the cart has four functional wheels. She’ll have to get used to that.
Hearing the desperate bargaining at the bigger recycling depots, truckloads of’em, she can’t help but chuckle. She’s been in the game for so long, she knows all the neighborhood secrets. She knows that if you cut across the big parking lot, as swift as a mother cutting watermelon for her screaming children in the peak of summer, because at any time there can be a car jumpscaring the living spirit out of you, you can find, squeezed between an electronics store and a shoe store, a little-known depot. A kind old couple runs this place, complete with decrepit green-tinted walls and a permanently sticky floor; god knows how they’ve kept this place afloat. They are always generous with their weighing: if Lu’s cardboard weighed at seven point eight kilograms, Mr. Lam would wave it off and round up to eight. It makes a world of difference, five cents worth. The big depots would cheat ya and say “Oh it’s tattered, it’s no good…” isn’t it all the same recycled! Another thing they don’t have: Mrs. Lam’s various holiday dishes that she shoves in Lu’s hands because she already knows the ol’ song and dance of “Aiya, no, Lam tai-tai, you’re too kind…are you sure? Really are you sure?” Here Lu must cut in and say, before you think she’s selfish for not sharing this info with her fellow collectors, it’s every woman for herself in this line of work, it ain’t fair but ho-ho what part about any of this is?
This other trick she’s also acquired by way of close observation, not trade talk; at first she only attributed their early hustling to diligence, but soon she realized that Hong Kong humidity had its perks. In the morning, air – in the form of wet particles – gushes into her nostrils, sinks its melting claws in the unwilling cardboard, burdening it with added weight. While this exchange is going on, with hawk-like eyes, Lu swoops in and captures the heavy cardboard, heavy with promise of a few cents more.
“Altogether…twenty-nine kilograms. There you go!”
Ey, not bad. But still she inquires, careful to celebrate, “How much?” Prices fluctuate at the drop of a hat; now whose hat? big Boss up north, of course.
“Seven cents per kilo, just like last week,” Mr. Lam beamed. This plus some fruit money is just enough to live on; and every day at Mr. Lam’s recycling depot, the fate of the week has been decided: a good week or a bad week, all depending on whether there will be enough room in the budget for an extra helping of sausage. She pats herself on the back; she’s done a mighty good job today.
Off she goes, off to Apliu Street, the thieves’ market, plucking the broken electronic components out, before snatching away all the cardboard before anyone else even laid their eyes on it. She gallops with the feet of a horse and hauls with the belly of a supernatural spirit. That’s the norm though; it’s a hidden prerequisite to become a collector. Competition is fierce for a Tuesday, but it’s all about winning the long race, the war over mere battles. So when she feels sweat beads roll down to her eyes, which blink angrily at the salty intrusion, she decides perhaps it’s time for a sit-down.
There it is – her bench, glistening gray-green with glassy paint-like splotches on it, and all hers for the whole lunch break. In her pink velcro-stick bag hanging on the side of her cart she has tucked away a neatly-wrapped Seven-Eleven pork-floss onigiri. She savors every taste of that, no matter that it is cold and nothing like the homemade ones, certified Jiangsu authentic, and oh she imagines the smell leads her up to gilded temples, to yellowed wheat fields, wherever it would go, she shall follow… Amongst all the chewing, suddenly her tongue goes numb, eerily tasteless, more than before at least. The culprit: a plastic bit stuck in the rice. She never knew how to open these goddamned plastic wrapping, step one, step two, ah just rip it apart and be done with it! Maybe when she first came to the city – she admits, she treasured the way each strip would glide down its destined pathway, the instructions, like they knew the answers and if you just follow the steps, you’ll get there, they assured. Like hell they do. They’re just better at slapping the horses’ butts, then climbing up the social ladder with those same dirty hands; that’s not even to mention the ones already at the top, sitting there on human thrones.
Lu swears, next time – and this time it will be different – she’ll make herself a packed lunch instead of this convenience store junk. A strange feeling, to scold herself the same way she would to… no one in particular, any picky brat. It is at times like these when she feels so close to Sleep that she’d be grateful for the ever-present noise in the streets; now are those pots and pans she hears? Ah, Sleep would be so motherly and kind and She’d embrace her; hard to fight that and gravity off; her eyelids kept drooping. Being good at waking up on time every day means the biggest yawns, impossibly big; she could swallow her throat whole and suck out all the air around. But the shouts – she makes out signs as well so perhaps it’s from a protest – won’t let her doze off. That is good; it keeps her schedule in check.
Where to next? Her legs march to the beat of Sham Shui Po’s thumping heart; as her feet slap down onto solid ground, she imagines feeling the grainy texture of Poplar Street through her worn soles. Like a meticulously trained doctor whose finger presses down at the exact spot to find a pulse, without hesitant circling indicating trial and error, Lu needs not to wait for the city to tell her what it needs. The alleys coiling around main streets, the telephone wires that drape lazily off apartment balconies, hell, even the fly-swatters spinning in dazed anger – they divulge secrets to her. This is a shortcut, they say. Look out! The vegetable vendor is hosing down the street again, they say. Perhaps the city’s roots have taken hold of her, boring inside to twist together with her veins. The city is a good ally to have on your side; who else has been around longer than these stoic, silent observers? They lend a different sort of comfort than people, something more stable. Concrete is by far a stabler material than flesh.
As soon as Lu steps onto the zebra crossing, the red guy bumps out the green, and she is forced to take a step backwards. These motorcycles are ruthless; it’s hard to imagine a time when roads were for people and vehicles were relegated to the tracks. From the front, kicked-up dust from zooming cars veil her vision; from the sides, pedestrians wedge themselves beside her. Among them is a tour guide with uncountable orange ducklings following him by way of microphone-enhanced instructions and a muscle-shirt-clad gym rat whose armpits cast two droopy damp shadows. And his logic is to use something even stronger to cover up all that sweat. If there ever are more cockroaches in her room than she can thwack, it’ll be a good idea to invite him over; not even the roaches’ll dare approach this! She will never and can never forget the toxic fumes of that odorous body spray weaseling their way into the seams of her gangster Mickey Mouse shirt (actually, it’s spelled ‘Mikeye Mouse’ for copyright reasons). Bought it half off at the wet market; she supposes this manly body spray does fit the whole gold-chain aesthetic better than its original fish stink.
Although this busy bustle is transpiring all around, Lu feels calm at this intersection. Time stands still for her, but not for everybody else; they’re still hurrying to catch this bus, scurrying for work. Soon she will join them, once this red light turns green. For now though, the red light absolves her of the guilt that always comes with rest; it feels like the Lord has cupped a bubble around her to protect her from ever-marching Time. She watches them through glassy eyes, detached, in her own world, with her own set of rules. Queen Lu! her subjects would hail, donning the poofiest scruff-collars, scattered daisies on a meadow. As Queen, the first law she shall invoke? Free mandatory massage and needling for every citizen! Every week!
Blink, and it’s green. So starts the countdown. At the end of this countdown the bomb doesn’t go off, but the impatient motorcycles sure will. Hand gripping her cart, Lu tries to cross the road, and she could’ve, if only these bastards would stop their squeezing and give poor old Lu a fighting chance! Her cart has become a burden, getting stuck between indistinguishable skinny-jeanned legs. It’s twenty fourteen; shouldn’t they have invented flying cars by now? and by extension, flying carts? Oh the view she’ll have, sweeping over the blocky districts, dwindling dots still scrambling about, but that’ll be of no concern to her, not anymore… But enough fantasies! she clears her throat. She’s a woman on a mission; survival is her impetus. She yanked her cart, bouncing between legs, and it’s working, she’s moving ahead! Apparently not fast enough, red overtakes her. In her rush – everything whizzing by in streaks of light, a cacophony of roaring motors – the light sedates her with a poisonous intention, and this dizzying hum that vibrates in her brain transfixes her in one spot. As her mind constrains her muscles to follow the zebra stripes, also having to dodge the swerving bicycles, gravity becomes lighter, and floats up, her feet too – into the air – and she trips, having not quite yet mastered the art of walking on air. The curb grazes her lower leg, but she clambers up quick; she’s a resilient old woman (thanks to her long earlobes) – she always manages; and her foot steps onto the sidewalk before the first engine whir.
“Po-po, are you okay?” The voice rings clear and breaks her brief trance. A smooth pale hand sticks stiff out – whoever it is must not have worked a day in their life.
“That’s okay, no need.” Grasping a more stable pole instead, she thanks the young man anyway and prepares to get going. But he is so terribly insistent, and pushy; so are the pedestrians who cannot stand even a second’s time lent. He repeats, a glitching robot, “You must need some help pushing the cart;” hands waving anywhere but near it. Hasn’t he heard the nos that came before? So far all Lu sees is: more ‘help’; more mess. Swarms of busybees dodge them by a hair; if they didn’t, she wouldn’t blame them; they are blocking the sidewalk. They are the people she’d give side-eyes to, taking up the whole street and whatnot, hmph.
When the shadowed cloud descends and shields her from light’s prying piercing pupils, she hurriedly slips away into obscurity. What’s important right now is breaking out of this crowd, seeking space; perhaps under one of the rusty metal roofs? Lu feels like a general, commanding her cart-soldier to sniff out a possible pathway; this requires strategy, my friend; she’d direct the army to flank from both sides in a V shape, yes, a V shape like in Red Cliff. She rides on out on army horses.
Safe in isolation now, she leans against the ridged column. She’s glad it wasn’t a sprain: the initial sting would be momentary — she can stand that — but the dull throb that would accompany her every step: that she fears. You can’t shake that off; it’s a stubborn leech. Still, better that than forced kindness. The two types that exist in this man-eat-man world: forced and malicious. The former, borne out of guilt whose stains of repugnance can’t be done away, no matter how many spins, topsy-turvy perspective shifts you give it. One look at the eyes, avoidant and seeded with pity, and she knows. The latter drapes a cotton coat over her shoulders; as it rains, and it will, no amount of shaking can rid Lu of the increasing weight as the tension between each waterlogged particle in each thread of yarn drags her down. Your debt catches up with you; kindness racks up a high bill.
So she continues on her cardboard quest; she hates to leave things unfinished. Lu is the Tortoise, crawling slowly but surely, despite the chances of winning against the Hare initially seeming ghost-thin. And who is this Hare? Chan jie, for one, and those damned government inspectors too! The spirit of competition scratches her back, tingly with nerves alive; the sidewalk suddenly feels like a moving walkway, and she bursts forwards, always forwards.

2023.04.02 14:53 pantsyrselfclean [M4F] An underwear-clad first impression! (A silly rom-com prompt.)
When Nate Cooper picked up his dorm room key (Clinton Hall, floor six, room five) from the front desk, the RA on duty (a smiling brunette named Alexis) offered some friendly advice: "Keep your door open during move-in week. It's the best way to make friends with your neighbors!" Nate agreed to follow her upperclassman wisdom with a fleeting grin and thumbs-up of his own, but his promise only remained unbroken until he dragged his belongings — about three-and-a-half cardboard boxes, a bulky suitcase, and a backpack full — into his room and discovered just how sweltering a spacious single could be in the dog days of mid-Atlantic summer without central air conditioning.
His first move was to reach across the twin-sized mattress of his bed and slide open the window that faced the quad; the stifled breeze that flitted through wasn't nearly enough to take on the heat. Nate's second move was to mentally note to pick up a fan from the student store once he was suitably unpacked. His third move, and the one he'd most regret in just about fifteen minutes or so, was to keep his dorm room's door shut, ditch his chinos and slate-gray polo, fold the discarded articles neatly on his mattress, and proceed to start the arduous unpacking process in just his underwear and glasses.
With a "Summer Vibes" Apple Music playlist streaming from his propped-up phone, Nate brushed a bead of sweat away from his messy blonde locks and started making Room Five of Floor Six feel a little more like his own, a pair of high school basketball trophies adorning his desk along with a stack of newly-purchased textbooks (Education 101 on top, naturally) and a poster of the periodic table taped neatly over his dresser.
Humming along to a song he was only a little familiar with, Nate glanced down at his door, noticing that someone had attempted to slide a flyer of some sort through the crack. Probably advertising a freshman mixer or some other bonding experience. When he reached down to pluck the folded paper, his clumsy pinch only pushed it further outside, so Nate peeked through the keyhole with a studious hazel gaze. The hallway was vacant, so he took his chance, quickly darting out and snatching the flyer. (It was for a freshman mixer, of course.)
What followed happened too quickly to react to. The door, not propped open properly, slammed shut. Nate pulled at the handle, watching it refuse to turn. He reached for a lanyard that was definitely not around his neck. And, clutching the gaudily-colored flyer in a fist that tightened with deepened mortification, realized that he was locked out of his dorm room wearing a pair of (adorably embarrassing undies of YOUR choice!) that, in hindsight, shouldn't have even been packed for college, let alone his move-in day pair of choice.

Hi! I'll keep this part short and sweet after a lengthy prompt. I'm a male writer in my early-mid twenties looking for a similarly aged writing partner looking for a slice-of-life romantic comedy story! Please take this writing sample as a kind of template for the level of detail and literacy I'm looking for, and, if you're interested in pursuing this story, I'd really enjoy if you wrote a response in-character as whoever discovers Nate's predicament! Who your character might be is entirely your call. A rescuer who lives next door? An RA with a latent mischievous streak? A performing arts major down the hall with a flair for the dramatic? Whatever you think would be most fun!

2023.04.02 14:50 nemanja694 [REQUEST][STEAM]BeamNG.drive [21 euro] [13th attempt]
Hi ! How are you today ?
13th attempt and I am not giving up yet :)
What is BeamNG.drive ?
Beamng is soft body, incredibly realistic driving sandbox simulator. It offers large amount of vehicles and mods, maps... It is incredibly detailed simulation. It simulates different engine thermals, clutch thermals, you can damage all sort of parts on the cars, it offers realistic crashing due to soft body physics. This is in my opinion most realistic driving game. You can drive cars, trucks even planes (but planes are quite wonky). It offers good maps that are inspired by real locations. We have West and East Coast of USA, Italy, African Jungle etc....
Also there is talented community of mod makers that just keep releasing high quality mods that are dev standard.
And talking about dev's, they are one of the best, they always deliver so much and improve game every update.
Why I want it ?
I always loved racing and driving games especially simulation type. Cars and trucks always fascinated me since I was little kid. As I got the wheel 2 years ago I have 90% of my game time playing driving games and BeamNG is last driving game I want to own. Beamng always looked unique to me with it realistic simulation of vehicles and different types of it. As you can see on my steam profile I play lot of ETS2 as I like more chill driving games where I can turn off my brain for a moment from all negative things. I followed this game for years and always watched content on youtube from WhyBeAre, Neilogical, Muye and was always impressed. And the most important thing is that I can play BeamMP with my friend !
Why can't I afford it ?
I don't use credit cards to pay for anything so I don't have any means to buy the game, also recently spent over 3000 euro for my mom’s surgery and thankfully everything is ok. Living is tough here so you must make wise choices to survive in these hard times, so I can't have luxury of buying games i want at this moment.

2023.04.02 14:36 Sare-rah How do you soldier on through exhaustion, anxiety and time constraints?
I am a 27 year old woman, single, who eats healthy, go to the gym and challenges myself there, plays netball with a great team of women, whose studying at uni and almost graduated and looking at gaining some extra basic skills to use towards the future and am looking at changing jobs soon once I'm further prepared. I am finding it increasingly hard to get through the work days, and try and find a time for everything while also find time to relax. My mental health is seriously declining and I really don't feel like myself.
I'm exhausted by my current work, where I'm a full-time supervisor at a pet store. The work is hard and its becoming meaningless, and we are inundated with customers constantly, to the point we barely get any of our store jobs and stock done, and my manager predominantly spends his time in the office doing other tasks while I am usually running the show on the floor, which means I am sorting out the staff, monitoring task progression, doing refunds and receiving stock as well as serving customers and doing my other jobs. My 2IC is not as motivated as me, and tends to skate by on the bare minimum. The company also is steadily getting worse and worse by the day, with little support and communication given to staff who are constantly dealing with marketing and ticketing issues, which takes up a large part of our day.
When I get home at the end of the day I just want to crash. I don't want to do anything, not work on my uni or go to the gym. I just want to eat and drink and waste time on TikTok and then eventually sleep. I don't have many people to talk too, as a lot of my friends are dealing with their own stuff, and my family doesn't understand nor care, and my brother is being particularly hard on me to hurry it up with getting my life on track. This only increases my anxiety and makes me less motivated as there is so much that needs to be done to get my life in order, but I feel utterly and totally exhausted and alone. I don't know how I am going to get the motivation to do well on my final units at uni, find a new job, keep it up at the gym, still eat healthy and get consistent good night sleeps, and start to develop better relationships and build new skills all while saving money for the future.
Has anyone pulled themselves out of a place like this and managed to improve their circumstances? How did you battle through despite exhaustion? Any advice?
Thanks!

2023.04.02 14:16 Spinmoon CableMod RT-Series PRO Cable Kit for Seasonic availability in Europe?
Hello CableMod and community,
I've been waiting since the beginning of this year and now I'm just waiting to get my last couple of pieces to make my new build, last required parts are some CableMod kits.
Any availability updates for those RT-Series PRO Cable kits ?
For AMD users we need those "old" 2x/3x "8-pin EPS" kits variants but seems now the only focus and available kits are the 12VHPWR kits.
Any ETA for those kits to be available in European stores, please ?
Thank you!

2023.04.02 14:10 Putrid-Sherbet Is this power bank compatible with my Pixel 6a?
My mother bought it in a grocery store as part of their loyalty program, it was also partially paid for with money.
The leaflet talks about two output 1 DC 5V/2.1 A and the other one the same. Total output witch I don't know what it means: DC 5V / 2.1 A
I also would like to charge it using my Google charger witch I bought on Google store, the Italian website lists output like this: PD 20V⎓1.5A, 15V⎓2A, 5V/9V⎓3A; PPS 21V⎓1.5A. 11V⎓3A
Sorry to bother you guys with this but I couldn't find any answer online

2023.04.02 14:10 el_toro7 Navigating a Speedy Recovery
Hi all,
Thanks to many commenters and some I have private messaged who have helped me think about what is going on with my body. I believe I have enough data to confidently say that I am mildly floxed, and yet I have been particularly concerned with a number of issues that might be of interest to others, and about which some more anecdotal and informed advice might help me.
What happened: Last week of Feb, 2023, I had a number of symptoms that led me to believe I might have something going on with my kidneys (all very mild, but I noticed slight hematuria [blood in urine] and on wife's orders went to the walk-in clinic) on Feb 28. The doctor confirmed microhematuria, and very quickly prescribed an antibiotic I'd never heard of (Ciprofloxacin). He told me to start right away, as did the the pharmacist.
No comments about any neuropathic/tendinopathic side effects.
Now, I have a degree in exercise science; and am an exercise enthusiast; and participate mutliple times a week in recreational grappling sports (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Judo). I've lifted weights and done cardio and fairly intense training for years. Had I known about such potential issues, I'd have put the breaks on. I'm a healthy 32-y/o male.
Anyway, I took my first dose of 500mg Cipro ~14:30 and thought nothing of it. ~18:30 I made an off-hand comment to my wife about my left knee bothering me (unrelated to antibiotic). Thank God, she says to me "I'm remembering a comment from nursing school [10 years prior!] about FQs causing spontaneous achilles tendon rupture." -_-
Some "looking up," and I was on the phone with the pharmacist, who told me to stop taking and go to emerge. 9 hours later (over night) it was confirmed I had
no infection/
no need for any antibiotic, and I was advised to stop taking it.
My symptoms: I was up all night in the ER that night seeing if anything else had happened, but felt "fine" other than tingling lower legs. The next day I was tired (from not sleeping), and the day after I thought I was fine (hadn't yet found this sub) and trained pretty hard martial arts. The following day I trained hard again weightlifting. It was the weekend now, and I felt pretty beat up; my ankles were not feeling good at all.
I began to feel mild (2-3/10) soreness in my ankles, wrists, elbows, and knees, and in the process of trying to figure out if this really was related to Cipro, I found this subreddit.
Week 1 was the week of the incident, and discovering these early symptoms, which all presented by the end of that week.
Week 2 I began to have symptoms both of peripheral neuropathy (burning in distal arm and leg structures), and after continued mild pain. By early week two I had purchased the usual suspect supplements: CoQ10, PQQ, Magnesium, etc. I already was taking Creatine Monohydrate, Vitamin D, and procyanidins (in the form of pure cacao extract): both Creatine and Procyanidins on oxidation, blood flow, cognition, and mitochondrial protection. Creatine has a good protective effect against fatigue and DNA damage (these are evidence-based health outcomes as collated by the team at
examine.com).
By late week 2 I had stopped most normal activity. But late on week 2 I had gone for a ~20 minute walk (many of you wouldn't even dare have tried this; my symptoms are milder). This left me with symptoms of tendinitis in my left hamstring at the knee which effected my gait for 3 days with moderate (more than mild) pain. Went away by day 4.
Week 3. On week 3 I felt pretty good if I didn't do anything, but would still be sore with any stressful physical activity (ie., on my feet a lot; doing groceries, carrying kids, etc.). I tried my first workout, which involved a couple sets of about half reps, half weight pull ups and presses; lighter for legs. Slow, controlled. I felt good overall, but fatigued from even this. However I had symptoms of elbow tendinitis for 3 days (I assume from the combination of pull ups and push ups).
On week 3 I returned to my sport training, which involved even less than the above workout (mostly some movement on the ground on soft mats. Given my background in exercise science and in consultation with a family member who is a physio, I made a 6-month, auto-regulated plan for a full return to sport and a return to higher capacity training.
Week 4 was very much like week 3, with ups and downs and minor strains lasting a day or two when I tried pushing a little more.
Week 5. I am now near the end of week 5. My symptoms seem to continually improve, but half of the time feel about the same. Part of this is due to insomnia which I have had throughout (I suffer from chronic insomnia, take a "z-drug" for it (strict rules: no more than half a dose, no more than two nights in a row, no more than three-four nights [at most] over a seven day period).
Note: I have spoken with the prescribing doctor who dismissed my concerns. I have reported the side effects to the governing health organization in my country. I have had one follow up with an internal medicine specialist who supposed neuropathy, and have a follow-up tomorrow where I can be clearer about FQT. I have a neurologist appointment scheduled for August of this year.
My ongoing concerns/plans/comments - Research suggests exercise should help with mitochondrial health. Almost any form of exercise will. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31674658/ . My auto-regulated plan has me increasing capacities week over week for weeks where I feel ~7/10 on average.
- I am struggling to come to grips with the transient nature of symptoms and the idea of "turnover" rates for tissues that might be affected. I believe I am out of the acute phase in my case, but don't know when I can begin to push more for body parts that seem ok. However, every time I do a workout, some minor strain occurs.
- I have lived fairly normally, while increasing my fruits and veggies and decreasing overly processed foods. I have had alcohol on three occasions and felt ok; I have had small amounts of caffeine (but I don't drink coffee ever anyway); I have had meds (zopiclone, a PPI which I sporadically take for reflux, and tylenol a couple times) and felt fine.
- I don't intend to take so many supplements for too long. My plan is to phase out of things like PQQ, and Curcumin, and long-term just have a good multi, and CoQ10.
- Many people who are young, healthy, and mildly affected are anxious about returning to sport. I would love to open a conversation about this and share information and support. There is every reason to believe that measured activity will only improve symptoms across the board.
Questions: Can people who perceive themselves to be like me (feeling pretty good in normal routines most days) share their experiences returning to sport early? I believe that some on the mild end come out of most issues within a 12-week time frame. I don't know if this correlates with the turn-over rate of mitochondria in some tissues. But I am very curious about the 12 and then 24-week milestone (24 weeks might have research-based significance because it was the period suggested in the published rehabilitation literature for an increased risk timeframe:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4080593/)
Thanks in advance. I hope to contribute here re: exercise. My physio family member did therapy on a young person he believes had what we have (worse than me, milder than many of you), and spent 6-8 months with him moving towards near full recovery.
