2023.06.04 09:39 AntoniaNaoum I hate my classmates and I don't have friends
This year I started High School and I went to a different one than my friends. This year I've realised that I prefer to be alone but that doesn't answer why I hate my classmates. Some of them I haven't even talked to them while some others I've figured out their characters just by watching them. The boys won't shut up and every day I went home with a headache, they would make awful jokes and some of them were targeted towards me. The girls are very mean, the girl that takes absences always compared herself with me (she would ask me about my grades and she would be like "oh I got a higher score"),I would sometimes caught her glaring at me and she acts better than me. The other girls aren't good either they talk shitty about anyone who isn't like them and I'm sorry to say that but they are total bitches, woman shouldn't bring other woman down but they are doing this to me so I'm in the right to do the same, right? I was always kind to my classmates, I've never been rude to them even once. I think they hate me because the teachers love me, I'm the only one that takes notes, does the H/W and is being respectful towards them. Due to that,I look better than them to the teachers but I'm not doing it on purpose, it's true, I like praises but I mainly study because I want to go to University and get a good job. With the first chance they get they make fun of me either because I asked a "stupid question" or said something "stupid". One time it got so bad that I started crying in the classroom, thank god no one noticed. I'm glad that is summer now but I'll have to experience that again for 2 more years.

2023.06.04 09:37 ohoneyum Grad School Advice/Insight Request
Hi everyone!
I’m getting ready to student teach and graduate this December with my BM in music ed as a voice major. I loved school and I feel so fulfilled knowing I get to do my dream job. :) I’m so excited to (hopefully) start teaching soon! Ive also started to think more about going to grad school (after teaching for a few years). I think I’d like to become a choral and music education professor at a university one day. Like teaching people how to be teachers(?)
What do you call this degree…I imagine I need a doctorate but is that necessary? Does anyone know what the right degree path to do this is? Any insight into good schools for this? I’m sorry if some of this is obvious to most people, just looking for some help from the music teaching community. :) I plan on asking my supervisor about their experience too when they’re back from summer! Thanks in advance! 🥹🥲

2023.06.04 09:35 Deeplyunprincipled The absolute state of the WATP community
After many years of enjoying the show and the community surrounding it, I am about done. Whether he returns or not, the reaction to Patrick M quitting has said enough to make me question the whole ethos of this universe. If you can't see the value in someone struggling for years to find his niche, then eventually creating a product of real value, as in Great Job Awesome, then you have no right to declare yourself a critic of anything or a decent person. The immature delight it has induced in some people is abhorent to me, even as someone prone to behaving like a toddler myself at times, yet this takes the fucking biscuit. Sorry, this might not be eloquent or witty, but I'm too pissed for either. If seeing a guy on the verge of success, relatively speaking, after a decade of absorbing endless derision, then having the rug pulled from under him, gets you off, then you are a sick person. He might well be back, I'll be trying my hardest to make that so, but what I've seen on here of late makes me ashamed to have been a part of this community. Address all the fuck yous to your Mom, thanks.

Memory transcription subject: Doma, Venlil, treatment facility patient Date [standardized Sol time]: July 19th, 2135. A purple blob with pieces of something that appear to be vegetables falls onto my plate. Yuck I hope it tastes better than it looks. While Baali takes about 20 napkins along with his food and proceeds to congratulate the cook wearing an overall, gloves, and an apathetic expression hairnet. "Whoa Karat, you really did it with this meal, you're awesome." I notice how the cook expresses happiness with her tail and serves an extra portion of stew to Baali, taking away the napkins. Baali nervously laughs and lowers his ears, saying, "hehehe... thank you," before we leave the counter. That was... curious. I feel like I'm missing something, but I don't know what it is. "Hey Baali, why did she take back your napkins?" "Uh, it's nothing. She just doesn't like me taking her napkins." "That's... weird." "Don't worry about it, let me introduce you to the rest of the herd." Baali leads me to a round table where several Venlil were sitting and eating. "Doma, these are Roomaer, Gat, Bucket, and Belizba." "Roomaer, Gat, Bucket, and Belizba... this is Doma." I notice that out of the four Venlil Baali introduced me to, one turns his gaze to look at me, another continues wiping his chair with one of the cafeteria napkins while seemingly whispering something repeatedly, and the other two seem to ignore me. Baali takes a seat at the table and gestures for me to join him, placing his hand on the chair next to him where the slender Venlil with a round face and brown fur is diligently cleaning without lifting his gaze. "Come on, you can sit between me and Roomaer." I glance uncomfortably at the Venlil who seems obsessed with polishing the chair and decide to approach him with a question. "Is it not clean already?" The peculiar Venlil momentarily pauses his cleaning, turns to look at me, and replies, "No, no, no, still dirty, dirty, dirty." He resumes his task without skipping a beat. Seeking clarification, I quietly whisper to Baali, "What's the deal with this guy?" Baali responds, "Well, he just has a strong preference for cleanliness and order. Don't worry, he's harmless. He wouldn't harm even an insect. Speaking of insects, have I ever told you about the time I discovered a massive bug under my bed? I swear it was larger than my hand. You never imagine how big they can get..." I approach my seat between Baali and Roomaer with nervous anticipation, observing the peculiar Venlil as he also takes his place and obsessively rearranges his cutlery. Choosing to ignore the odd behavior, I let out a deep sigh, accepting the fact that I'm about to partake in a meal in this dreadful place. Casting a doubtful glance at my questionably sourced food, I reach out to grab my spoon from the table, only to have Roomaer preemptively snatch it away and begin cleaning it. The perplexed expression on my face, along with the movements of my tail and ears, fails to fully convey the extent of my confusion as I witness this strange individual meticulously polishing my cutlery, rearranging them on the table, grimacing, then picking them up again to clean them once more, and finally returning them to the table in a different order. https://preview.redd.it/cod5ibfhcy3b1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=81755a8f89ebe9df2f9e7677f00969d42d46f2e0 Undeterred, I make another attempt to take hold of the cutlery, only to be thwarted as Roomaer swiftly seizes them, rubs them fervently, and places them back in their designated positions. Growing increasingly frustrated, I try once more, but Roomaer moves the utensils slightly to the right. Determined, I cautiously inch my hand closer, yet Roomaer counters by shifting them ever so slightly to the left. Recognizing the futility of my efforts, I reluctantly retract my hand, patiently awaiting an opportune moment while the other Venlil appears to have ceased his unusual behavior. “Did you finish?” I asked. The Venlil, who had been visibly tense but had finally left my cutlery alone, remains still and silent. I relax and calm myself, finally ready to begin eating. Just as I am about to pick up the cutlery, the Venlil grabs them again. I stand up and snatch the spoon from him in fury. "You idiot! Clean the damn spoon one more time, and I'll make you swallow it!..." Just as I'm about to strike the Venlil, Baali steps in between us, calming me down. "Wait, wait, he's not doing it on purpose. He can't control it." The Venlil merely covers his head in remorse, repeating, "I'm sorry... sorry... I'm sorry." I calm down and lower my ears. Baali attempts to soothe the frightened Venlil and suggests that I switch places with him. I take my tray of food and exchange seats with Baali, remaining silent and deep in thought. Perhaps I shouldn't have gotten so angry. After all, it's not his fault if he can't control it. I should apologize... but later. For now, I'll just eat a little bit since I'm very hungry. Without looking, I try to grab my spoon again, but I fail and only grasp empty air. I turn my gaze and see that the damn spoon is no longer in its place. I look around until I spot the Venlil next to me hiding my spoon under his hand while clearly using his own spoon to eat from his own plate. Oh, for the sake of the stars! Will no one let me eat in peace?!!! In my frustration, I disregard the absent spoon and daringly take a bit of the purple stew with my hand. To my surprise, the taste is quite good. Perhaps a touch more salt would make it excellent, but overall it surpasses its initial appearance. As I savor the stew, a genuine sense of calm begins to wash over me, allowing me to momentarily disconnect from my surroundings and find true peace... "AAAAAHHHHHH!!!! AAAAAHHHH AAAAHHHH!!!" Startled, I abruptly snap out of my tranquility, nearly choking on the sound of a deafening bleat. It echoes as if someone is being pursued by a fearsome predator. However, when I lift my gaze, I discover that the source of the commotion is none other than the Venlil sitting in front of me. "Damn it, why is he screaming?" "AHHHH AHHHH AHHH!!" "What's the matter? is he injured? "AHHHHHH!!!" "Did someone harm you?" "AHHH AHHH!!!" "Are you frightened?" "AHHHHH!!!" "AT LEAST SAY SOMETHING, DON'T JUST SIT THERE AND SCREAM!!!!!" "AHHHHHHH AHHHH AHHHH!" Baali shields his ears, leaning closer to me to explain that Belisba likely took Gat's headphones. "Belisba? ...Of course, the spoon thief." Baali and I watch as Belisba anxiously hides triangular sponges with cables behind him. I was ready to get up and snatch them away, but Baali intervenes. "Calm down, Doma, I'll take care of it." Baali wags his tail to get Belisva's attention. "Hey, Belisba, I think Gat's headphones fell under the table. Could you pass them to me?" Belisba is momentarily surprised by Baali's question but quickly relaxes, crouches down as if to retrieve the headphones, and then hands them over to Baali. "Oh, here they are." Come on, at least make a more convincing act. It's obvious that you only took advantage of Baali's fake excuse to hide the theft. We all noticed. I observe as Baali approaches Gat and gently puts the headphones on him, giving him a sense of calm. Gat responds by nodding his head in what seems to be gratitude. "Is everyone here insane?" I said as I resumed eating, using my hand as a makeshift spoon. At that moment, Bucket, the Venlil who had been silently eating all this time, lets out a chuckle. "HA! And what did you expect from this place? Everyone here is sick in one way or another." "Just look at Mr. Clean over here, imagine how he must have ended up on a crowded public transportation. Of course, the exterminators had to intervene after a Venlil during rush hour tried to clean the entire transport." Roomaer simply lowers his head and ears in embarrassment and continues cleaning his food tray. "And don't even get me started on your friend with the magical hands." I turn and coldly gaze at Belizba just before he attempts to grab something from my plate with his hands, quickly pulling back. ... "And what about you, Bucket? How did you end up here?" Bucket takes a sip from his glass and pauses briefly before giving his response. "I was just doing my job as an exterminator, but the guys didn't appreciate me practicing with a flamethrower. Combine that with mistaking a bucket of water for one filled with fuel, and... well." "So that's why they call you Bucket?" Bucket takes a sip from his glass, pausing for a moment before giving his response. "I was just doing my job as an exterminator, but the guys didn't appreciate my enthusiasm for practicing with the flamethrower. And, well, things took a turn when I mistakenly grabbed a bucket of fuel instead of water." "Is that why they call you Bucket?" "Haha, no, that's another story, but I won't go into it. If anyone asks, you can just say it's because of that." "Hmm, I think Baali mentioned something about it... but honestly, I should have paid more attention to what he said." "That's probably for the best. He shouldn't have told you anything to begin with." "Speaking of Baali, why is he here? I mean, he seems so sociable and normal, not the kind of person you'd expect to find in a place like this. Maybe a bit chatty, but not deserving of being here." We both turn to see Baali still engrossed in conversation with Gat. "Well, he... asked me not to tell anyone." I pause for a moment before continuing, "But considering that Baali almost revealed my story... I'll give you a clue. It's in the notebook he always carries." From a distance, I notice that he never lets go of the notebook. It's always close by. "What could be in that notebook?" "It's complicated. Rather, I would focus on what that notebook doesn't have. But regardless, out of all of us, Baali is the least likely to belong here. No matter how you look at it, even with his terrible secret, I don't think someone like him could ever become a predator. And let me tell you, true predators have ended up here." I raise my ears in concern. "True predators?" "Yes, dangerous Venlil, the real deal." "Oh no." "Yeah, you better be careful. I've heard that some of them have even tried to take lives." "That's terrible..." Wait... "Normally, they are kept in solitary confinement, but I overheard the guards saying that the district judge accidentally mixed up some of the records, and they think one of these Venlil wasn't separated from the others." "..." Oh no. "Usually, we all avoid them." "..." Oh no, no, no. "Especially because the guards take it out on them." "..." This is bad, this is too bad. "They subject them to the worst shocks. I heard that one of them had their internal organs burned from so much electrical discharge." "..." Damn stars, I'm the predator Venlil they're talking about. "It's an incredibly painful death, but well, the important thing in the end is to keep the flock safe." I nervously affirm, "Haha, yeah... all for the sake of the flock." "And you, Doma, what about you? How did you end up here?" "..." Don't say trying to kill my boss. Don't say trying to kill my boss... "I also mistook a bucket of fuel." "I understand. It happens." No, damn it, it doesn't happen. "Well, at least you were brought to these facilities and not others." "What do you mean?" "Well, I was transferred from another facility up north, and it's definitely very different from here. Just look at Gat. In my old facility, they would never give him headphones, not in a million years." "Hmmm," I nod with my tail. "We also have a courtyard. I heard that it's a recent addition due to some renovations they made." "Hmmm, well, I guess that's... alright." "Look at it this way, you were lucky to end up in these facilities." "Hmmm, I suppose it's not so bad after all..." _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ [Fast Forward.] [20 minutes later.] "AAAHHH THIS IS REALLY BAD!!!" Immediately, I feel an electric shock emanating from the mesh on my head, coursing through my body as I remain trapped in a chair, surrounded by projected images of predators. "AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!" "AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!" "AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!" The agonizing cries of several patients echo in a dimly lit room, with a large black glass pane in front where the doctors presumably observe us. "CaAAAALM down, Doma, with tiIIIIime you'll gEEEEEEt used to it." I notice that Baali is in the chair next to me, talking as if he isn't also strapped to one of these torture chaaaairs. 2023.06.04 09:08 brightside80 Should I tell my sister to move out?
Summary: mum passed away years ago, lived with grandma who threw us out, lived with dad, then moved to temp accommodation and now living in a home. I (25f)my sister legal guardian when she was 16.
My sister (19)has been going through deep depression. She lived with my dad last year, because we couldn’t cope living with each other and she needed a parent. My dad is financially stable and can help her( he’s a maths teacher with a tutoring school) but moved back in with me because she was feeling depressed etc.
She didn’t make it to uni, I have been trying to help her through her depression whilst dealing with my own life. I recently got a full time job after being self employed straight from university.
It’s been a rollercoaster, not going to school, school calling me whilst I’m at work. Last month she cried about having no parents etc, so I finally decided to give her money for the holiday she had been asking me for, but I’d didn’t ask her to pay me back. I partly blame musket because she wasn’t in this state prior to living with my dad. I advised her to go to the same therapy organisation I went to and she has been going.
It’s been difficult in the house. I understand depression can make you neglect yourself. I constantly remind her to wash up after heralded etc.
Now recently we had our first argument because she didn’t take the dog to pre and the house stank of pee. I tell her several times to take him out a few times a day, but she doesn’t and I come home to the house smelling of pre and I’m the one cleaning it up.
After this she said she doesn’t feel safe here, I’ve traumatised her and her therapist even asked if there is anywhere she can go and that she’s already doing so much in the house. All I ask is for her to clean after herself and buy toilet roll and hand wash. This is because she uses 1 toilet roll a day and I wanted her to start buying it so she can be more mindful and last year we had a fly issue because she left fruit in her room and the cupboards were filled with ants which I had to clean up. Minor things break in the house and I repair it. It’s hard because I’m on my own, and yes I have a supportive partner but it’s long distance. She also said I caused her depression and I’m making her feel suicidal. I was shocked and hurt as I had been actively trying to help her with the depression.
My elder sister who didn’t speak to me for 14 years because of my dad used to give me sweets if I told against her and would hit her ( her own words) called me and was quite rude. She always disrespects me and I’m tired of it especially because she hardly sees or helps my sister. When I went to uni I forgot to bring back my old phone for my younger sister and they both harassed mr saying do you know what it’s like to have no parts at and all your friends on the bus have phones your Decius etc. I was really hurt because I had just started uni and my elder sister didn’t even wish me good luck, that was the first time she texted me in years.
Anyway I’m waffling now.
I am walking on eggshells now. The atmosphere in the home is awkward. I understand she’s going through a lot but I think it’s best if she lives with my sister after her exams because this situation is affecting me and caused me to relapse on my ED. Plus I don’t think it’s best for her to be living with someone who has traumatised her.
I realise I have been treating her too nicely which people have already mentioned but I just wanted her to have a decent life especially because she only has me and she’s going through depression but nothin I do is good enough. I am even paying for her tutoring, give her extra money for clothes etc because she can only work part time, include her on holidays with my partner and cook meals and listen to her. I know I’m not perfect and have made mistakes but since my mum passed away I have had to be the mum to my sister and myself. I

2023.06.04 08:55 TheGlowingWight OMG I need advice on how to proceed
My current job has been destroying my mental health! I am losing sleep over it. I know I should leave and have started applying elsewhere.
I got hired at my company straight out of university. I was told that I would be hired for 2nd shift, but told that I would be trained for minimum of 2 years before being moved. I was moved to 2nd shift 5 months into my job. Wasn't given any heads up, just one day I saw an email from my boss announcing it and then I was in 2nd shift. I also feel like my boss just doesn't like me. I never got any training from him, and instead had to learn everything on my own.
This week shit hit the fan. Some equipment we use shut down unexpectedly one day, equipment that I have never been trained for nor qualified for. There were no qualified members there to fix it and the floor supervisor (who is in charge of checking equipment before it's used, took off early). Maintaining equipment isn't part of my responsibility, but some how the operators think it's my responsibility, that I should know how to fix them. I am a continuous improvement engineer and have never worked with fixing equipment. I relay any issues to maintenance department, but this day none where there.
I tried contacting the person that left early to ask for their help, but they wouldn't answer my calls. With no other options, the crew left early that day. My boss then emails me next day telling me that it is my responsibility to check it and to get training on it. That I should be looking out for these things, taking more responsibility and asking me why I didn't call anyone (which I did). I told my boss that he's never trained me in that equipment and the last time that equipment shut down unexpectedly, he told me it was the floor supervisors responsible to check it and not mine.
This is super stressful because my boss keeps throwing more and more on my plate without training and then yells at me when I mess up. He already punished me from another incident (that HR cleared me of) by increasing my work ours from 8.5 to 12+ a day. He doesn't want me taking any breaks at work either as he doesn't take breaks himself (another thing I've been asking Reddit and HR for help with). I dread every day that I see him or interact with him.
I don't know what to do! Help me please.

2023.06.04 08:54 This_real_this_me MS in Mechanical Engineering Career Options
Hi guys, as per the title, I would like to ask those who took up MSME (or those who simply know people with MSME degree) what kind of jobs they got after finishing the program. Most of the people I know who graduated from the said master's degree are teaching in universities, and I would like to know if there are other career options aside from entering the academe. Thank you!

2023.06.04 08:39 Block-Busted Was it a mistake for the mankind to leave Medieval Era behind?
Because lately, I'm seeing people claiming that we're all going to die within this decade:
Experts are warning AI could lead to human extinction. Are we taking it seriously enough?
Human extinction.
Think about that for a second. Really think about it. The erasure of the human race from planet Earth.
That is what top industry leaders are frantically sounding the alarm about. These technologists and academics keep smashing the red panic button, doing everything they can to warn about the potential dangers artificial intelligence poses to the very existence of civilization.
On Tuesday, hundreds of top AI scientists, researchers, and others — including OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and Google DeepMind chief executive Demis Hassabis — again voiced deep concern for the future of humanity, signing a one-sentence open letter to the public that aimed to put the risks the rapidly advancing technology carries with it in unmistakable terms.
“Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” said the letter, signed by many of the industry’s most respected figures.
It doesn’t get more straightforward and urgent than that. These industry leaders are quite literally warning that the impending AI revolution should be taken as seriously as the threat of nuclear war. They are pleading for policymakers to erect some guardrails and establish baseline regulations to defang the primitive technology before it is too late.
Dan Hendrycks, the executive director of the Center for AI Safety, called the situation “reminiscent of atomic scientists issuing warnings about the very technologies they’ve created. As Robert Oppenheimer noted, ‘We knew the world would not be the same.’”
“There are many ‘important and urgent risks from AI,’ not just the risk of extinction; for example, systemic bias, misinformation, malicious use, cyberattacks, and weaponization,” Hendrycks continued. “These are all important risks that need to be addressed.”
And yet, it seems that the dire message these experts are desperately trying to send the public isn’t cutting through the noise of everyday life. AI experts might be sounding the alarm, but the level of trepidation — and in some cases sheer terror — they harbor about the technology is not being echoed with similar urgency by the news media to the masses.
Instead, broadly speaking, news organizations treated Tuesday’s letter — like all of the other warnings we have seen in recent months — as just another headline, mixed in with a garden variety of stories. Some major news organizations didn’t even feature an article about the chilling warning on their website’s homepages.
To some extent, it feels eerily reminiscent of the early days of the pandemic, before the widespread panic and the shutdowns and the overloaded emergency rooms. Newsrooms kept an eye on the rising threat that the virus posed, publishing stories about it slowly spreading across the world. But by the time the serious nature of the virus was fully recognized and fused into the very essence in which it was covered, it had already effectively upended the world.
History risks repeating itself with AI, with even higher stakes. Yes, news organizations are covering the developing technology. But there has been a considerable lack of urgency surrounding the issue given the open possibility of planetary peril.
Perhaps that is because it can be difficult to come to terms with the notion that a Hollywood-style science fiction apocalypse can become reality, that advancing computer technology might reach escape velocity and decimate humans from existence. It is, however, precisely what the world’s most leading experts are warning could happen.
It is much easier to avoid uncomfortable realities, pushing them from the forefront into the background and hoping that issues simply resolve themselves with time. But often they don’t — and it seems unlikely that the growing concerns pertaining to AI will resolve themselves. In fact, it’s far more likely that with the breakneck pace in which the technology is developing, the concerns will actually become more apparent with time.
As Cynthia Rudin, a computer science professor and AI researcher at Duke University, told CNN on Tuesday: “Do we really need more evidence that AI’s negative impact could be as big as nuclear war?”
https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/30/media/artificial-intelligence-warning-reliable-sources/index.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThere%20are%20many%20'important%20and,that%20need%20to%20be%20addressed.%E2%80%9D Pausing AI Developments Isn't Enough. We Need to Shut it All Down
BY ELIEZER YUDKOWSKY MARCH 29, 2023 6:01 PM EDT
Yudkowsky is a decision theorist from the U.S. and leads research at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute. He's been working on aligning Artificial General Intelligence since 2001 and is widely regarded as a founder of the field.
An open letter published today calls for “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.”
This 6-month moratorium would be better than no moratorium. I have respect for everyone who stepped up and signed it. It’s an improvement on the margin.
I refrained from signing because I think the letter is understating the seriousness of the situation and asking for too little to solve it.
The key issue is not “human-competitive” intelligence (as the open letter puts it); it’s what happens after AI gets to smarter-than-human intelligence. Key thresholds there may not be obvious, we definitely can’t calculate in advance what happens when, and it currently seems imaginable that a research lab would cross critical lines without noticing.
Many researchers steeped in these issues, including myself, expect that the most likely result of building a superhumanly smart AI, under anything remotely like the current circumstances, is that literally everyone on Earth will die. Not as in “maybe possibly some remote chance,” but as in “that is the obvious thing that would happen.” It’s not that you can’t, in principle, survive creating something much smarter than you; it’s that it would require precision and preparation and new scientific insights, and probably not having AI systems composed of giant inscrutable arrays of fractional numbers.
Without that precision and preparation, the most likely outcome is AI that does not do what we want, and does not care for us nor for sentient life in general. That kind of caring is something that could in principle be imbued into an AI but we are not ready and do not currently know how.
Absent that caring, we get “the AI does not love you, nor does it hate you, and you are made of atoms it can use for something else.”
The likely result of humanity facing down an opposed superhuman intelligence is a total loss. Valid metaphors include “a 10-year-old trying to play chess against Stockfish 15”, “the 11th century trying to fight the 21st century,” and “Australopithecus trying to fight Homo sapiens“.
To visualize a hostile superhuman AI, don’t imagine a lifeless book-smart thinker dwelling inside the internet and sending ill-intentioned emails. Visualize an entire alien civilization, thinking at millions of times human speeds, initially confined to computers—in a world of creatures that are, from its perspective, very stupid and very slow. A sufficiently intelligent AI won’t stay confined to computers for long. In today’s world you can email DNA strings to laboratories that will produce proteins on demand, allowing an AI initially confined to the internet to build artificial life forms or bootstrap straight to postbiological molecular manufacturing.
If somebody builds a too-powerful AI, under present conditions, I expect that every single member of the human species and all biological life on Earth dies shortly thereafter.
There’s no proposed plan for how we could do any such thing and survive. OpenAI’s openly declared intention is to make some future AI do our AI alignment homework. Just hearing that this is the plan ought to be enough to get any sensible person to panic. The other leading AI lab, DeepMind, has no plan at all.
An aside: None of this danger depends on whether or not AIs are or can be conscious; it’s intrinsic to the notion of powerful cognitive systems that optimize hard and calculate outputs that meet sufficiently complicated outcome criteria. With that said, I’d be remiss in my moral duties as a human if I didn’t also mention that we have no idea how to determine whether AI systems are aware of themselves—since we have no idea how to decode anything that goes on in the giant inscrutable arrays—and therefore we may at some point inadvertently create digital minds which are truly conscious and ought to have rights and shouldn’t be owned.
The rule that most people aware of these issues would have endorsed 50 years earlier, was that if an AI system can speak fluently and says it’s self-aware and demands human rights, that ought to be a hard stop on people just casually owning that AI and using it past that point. We already blew past that old line in the sand. And that was probably correct; I agree that current AIs are probably just imitating talk of self-awareness from their training data. But I mark that, with how little insight we have into these systems’ internals, we do not actually know.
If that’s our state of ignorance for GPT-4, and GPT-5 is the same size of giant capability step as from GPT-3 to GPT-4, I think we’ll no longer be able to justifiably say “probably not self-aware” if we let people make GPT-5s. It’ll just be “I don’t know; nobody knows.” If you can’t be sure whether you’re creating a self-aware AI, this is alarming not just because of the moral implications of the “self-aware” part, but because being unsure means you have no idea what you are doing and that is dangerous and you should stop.
On Feb. 7, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, publicly gloated that the new Bing would make Google “come out and show that they can dance.” “I want people to know that we made them dance,” he said.
This is not how the CEO of Microsoft talks in a sane world. It shows an overwhelming gap between how seriously we are taking the problem, and how seriously we needed to take the problem starting 30 years ago.
We are not going to bridge that gap in six months.
It took more than 60 years between when the notion of Artificial Intelligence was first proposed and studied, and for us to reach today’s capabilities. Solving safety of superhuman intelligence—not perfect safety, safety in the sense of “not killing literally everyone”—could very reasonably take at least half that long. And the thing about trying this with superhuman intelligence is that if you get that wrong on the first try, you do not get to learn from your mistakes, because you are dead. Humanity does not learn from the mistake and dust itself off and try again, as in other challenges we’ve overcome in our history, because we are all gone.
Trying to get anything right on the first really critical try is an extraordinary ask, in science and in engineering. We are not coming in with anything like the approach that would be required to do it successfully. If we held anything in the nascent field of Artificial General Intelligence to the lesser standards of engineering rigor that apply to a bridge meant to carry a couple of thousand cars, the entire field would be shut down tomorrow.
We are not prepared. We are not on course to be prepared in any reasonable time window. There is no plan. Progress in AI capabilities is running vastly, vastly ahead of progress in AI alignment or even progress in understanding what the hell is going on inside those systems. If we actually do this, we are all going to die.
Many researchers working on these systems think that we’re plunging toward a catastrophe, with more of them daring to say it in private than in public; but they think that they can’t unilaterally stop the forward plunge, that others will go on even if they personally quit their jobs. And so they all think they might as well keep going. This is a stupid state of affairs, and an undignified way for Earth to die, and the rest of humanity ought to step in at this point and help the industry solve its collective action problem.
Some of my friends have recently reported to me that when people outside the AI industry hear about extinction risk from Artificial General Intelligence for the first time, their reaction is “maybe we should not build AGI, then.”
Hearing this gave me a tiny flash of hope, because it’s a simpler, more sensible, and frankly saner reaction than I’ve been hearing over the last 20 years of trying to get anyone in the industry to take things seriously. Anyone talking that sanely deserves to hear how bad the situation actually is, and not be told that a six-month moratorium is going to fix it.
On March 16, my partner sent me this email. (She later gave me permission to excerpt it here.)
“Nina lost a tooth! In the usual way that children do, not out of carelessness! Seeing GPT4 blow away those standardized tests on the same day that Nina hit a childhood milestone brought an emotional surge that swept me off my feet for a minute. It’s all going too fast. I worry that sharing this will heighten your own grief, but I’d rather be known to you than for each of us to suffer alone.”
When the insider conversation is about the grief of seeing your daughter lose her first tooth, and thinking she’s not going to get a chance to grow up, I believe we are past the point of playing political chess about a six-month moratorium.
If there was a plan for Earth to survive, if only we passed a six-month moratorium, I would back that plan. There isn’t any such plan.
Here’s what would actually need to be done:
The moratorium on new large training runs needs to be indefinite and worldwide. There can be no exceptions, including for governments or militaries. If the policy starts with the U.S., then China needs to see that the U.S. is not seeking an advantage but rather trying to prevent a horrifically dangerous technology which can have no true owner and which will kill everyone in the U.S. and in China and on Earth. If I had infinite freedom to write laws, I might carve out a single exception for AIs being trained solely to solve problems in biology and biotechnology, not trained on text from the internet, and not to the level where they start talking or planning; but if that was remotely complicating the issue I would immediately jettison that proposal and say to just shut it all down.
Shut down all the large GPU clusters (the large computer farms where the most powerful AIs are refined). Shut down all the large training runs. Put a ceiling on how much computing power anyone is allowed to use in training an AI system, and move it downward over the coming years to compensate for more efficient training algorithms. No exceptions for governments and militaries. Make immediate multinational agreements to prevent the prohibited activities from moving elsewhere. Track all GPUs sold. If intelligence says that a country outside the agreement is building a GPU cluster, be less scared of a shooting conflict between nations than of the moratorium being violated; be willing to destroy a rogue datacenter by airstrike.
Frame nothing as a conflict between national interests, have it clear that anyone talking of arms races is a fool. That we all live or die as one, in this, is not a policy but a fact of nature. Make it explicit in international diplomacy that preventing AI extinction scenarios is considered a priority above preventing a full nuclear exchange, and that allied nuclear countries are willing to run some risk of nuclear exchange if that’s what it takes to reduce the risk of large AI training runs.
That’s the kind of policy change that would cause my partner and I to hold each other, and say to each other that a miracle happened, and now there’s a chance that maybe Nina will live. The sane people hearing about this for the first time and sensibly saying “maybe we should not” deserve to hear, honestly, what it would take to have that happen. And when your policy ask is that large, the only way it goes through is if policymakers realize that if they conduct business as usual, and do what’s politically easy, that means their own kids are going to die too.
Shut it all down.
We are not ready. We are not on track to be significantly readier in the foreseeable future. If we go ahead on this everyone will die, including children who did not choose this and did not do anything wrong.
Shut it down.
https://time.com/6266923/ai-eliezer-yudkowsky-open-letter-not-enough/ I fully expect to die in the AI apocalypse in 5-10 years, and I'll be surprised by happy if I don't.
https://old.reddit.com/Futurology/comments/134g9zp/one_of_the_creators_of_chatgpt_said_that_the/jifgp46/?context=3 People are going to say no because it would be inconvenient, but I don't see what's stopping AI from ending all life in the next couple of years. Alignment is an unsolved problem, and an unaligned AI will most likely try to kill anything it sees as a threat to its mission.
https://old.reddit.com/artificial/comments/13xsbnt/is_ai_going_to_cause_the_complete_extinction_of/jmjzpmo/?context=3 Yes, AI will probably cause human extinction in the next decade. Paul Christiano, former senior employee of OpenAI, said that there is 20% chance that AI causes human extinction. Eliezer Yudkowsky, major contributor to AI safety and development, thinks it is 99%.
https://old.reddit.com/artificial/comments/13xsbnt/is_ai_going_to_cause_the_complete_extinction_of/jms84rb/ I am trying actually! I organized a picket outside OpenAI's HQ in May, before the Extinction statement.
You can search Eliezer Yudkowsky podcasts on youtube, or his blog. The podcast i recommend is Bankless one.
He says that our death is the most likely outcome from AI, and is now living off his life, like it is his last years.
https://old.reddit.com/artificial/comments/13xsbnt/is_ai_going_to_cause_the_complete_extinction_of/jmsqj28/ Based on these, it seems like we're far more likely to go completely extinct than we did before with AI, COVID-19, nuclear weapons, and so on. None of those existed during Medieval Era, so maybe we should've never left that era.
Thoughts on these?

2023.06.04 08:27 PhilosopherNo592 What industries can a geology major work in?
Hello,
I live in Canada and am a first year geology student at Western University and was wondering want potential industries geology could lead me to.
Specifically, is it possible to become a software developeengineer with this degree, or should I think more traditionally?
I enjoy the outdoors and think geology would be a good field for me, but the idea of being able to apply my knowledge to multiple industries would be helpful when trying to find a future job.
Thanks:)

2023.06.04 08:26 poofpoof427 Feeling lost after University
I just finished University and I’m supposed to be looking for a full time job but the problem is, I feel so lost and unmotivated. I don’t have a strong passion for anything. I’m graduating with a communications degree, I had a bit of exposure to HR and Business Development but I’m not entirely sure that’s what I want to do for a full time.
Things at home are also not looking great. I feel really mentally overwhelmed by my dad’s behaviour, constant guilt trip & manipulation. I’m just constantly frustrated and overwhelmed. Is it okay to feel this way? How do I get out of it? Pls help!

2023.06.04 08:18 alisonqiu Should I apply for full time to save tuition or continue to apply for internships
I am a rising junior and I’m on track to graduate in three years, so I need to decide whether to apply for full-time or internship offers for next year. I pay full tuition at a private university and it’s quite expensive (so I’m thinking about graduating in three years) but I also know it might be harder to get a full-time offer this year
So… should I try to graduate early and apply for full-time job right now, or continue to apply for internships and wait for the economy to become better? Thank you!

2023.06.04 08:06 EmpireSlayer_69 International student with UCL MSc Finance offer, so actually how is UCL perceived in UK?
I applied to 4 universities: UCL, LSE, Edinburgh and KCL, got offer from UCL. I was happy for this offer because I heard UCL is more of "social" university and students often participate in societies, and workload is supposed to be not as bad them. But I actually wonder, considering there are universities like Oxbridge and Imperial, how UCL alumni are perceived in job market in UK and West overall?

2023.06.04 08:05 EPIKGUTS24 CMV: All healthcare should be 100% taxpayer funded, and anything less is a failure of the healthcare system
The exception here is medical procedures that aren't really medically important, such as breast enlargement or a nose job. The exception to that exception would be things like cosmetic procedures that markedly improve a patient's quality of life, such as breast implants for someone gender transitioning or has undergone a mastectomy, facial reconstruction for someone who had a car accident or birth defect, things of that nature. Which is a tiny, tiny minority of all medical procedures so it wouldn't make much of a change to the total cost.
Here are some reasons I believe this:
- For most people, it would save them money. Imagine, if you will, that all the money you put in insurance instead went to a big pot managed by a nonprofit which paid out when you need money for medical procedures. This would be just as effective as the US's current system, but it would save money because it would eliminate the profit-seeking motives of insurance companies. Now, imagine that instead of having a bunch of bureaucracy handling insurance payouts, it was simply paid for via taxes and the government covered healthcare. Wouldn't that also save money by reducing bureaucratic waste?
- "The government is wasteful" isn't a valid counterargument to this, because even if it's true that the government is more wasteful than private companies (and that that cost outweighs the benefits of publicizing healthcare), isn't the obvious response that we should force the government to be better, rather than accept the shitty system that's in place?
- Healthcare is a human right. We live in a highly developed society, I think we can generally afford to lose some money on healthcare. We're human, aren't we? Aren't we supposed to help each other and work together?
- Healthcare makes money. There are plenty of people in the US who choose not to get healthcare because they can't afford it. These people often then get sick and need more healthcare anyway, or even die. Dead people don't pay taxes. Keeping your populous alive and healthy requires an initial investment, but it's one that inevitably pays off in the end. Remember that the US pays more for healthcare than any other country in the world, but doesn't even come top 5 in most disease outcome rates (eg The US has a 33.1% stomach cancer 5-year survival rate, putting it at #9 globally, with #1 being South Korea at 68.9%).
And here are some rebuttals to common counterarguments:
- "Countries with public healthcare have longer wait times"
- As mentioned before, despite spending the most on healthcare in the world, the US isn't even close to first in outcomes for many common diseases. In terms of wait time it is difficult to empirically measure wait time across different countries because they often measure them differently, but it doesn't seem that the US is too bad in this regard. An OECD study (that looked at 11 countries) on wait times showed that in terms of % of patients waiting more than 1 day for treatment, the US was #10 at 28%, in front of Canada at %33, with the best being Switzerland at 12%. In terms of % waiting more than 1 month (for a specialist appointment), the US was better at #4 with 27%, vs again Switzerland at 23%. So, there are plenty of countries with public healthcare that have shorter wait times than the US. Some of these countries, such as Switzerland, do have private healthcare, but crucially it is universal private healthcare and costs them much less than it does in the US.
- "Doctor's wages would fall and therefore nobody would want to be a doctor"
- It's true that doctors in the US are generally the most highly paid in the world. However, the US doesn't even have more doctors than other countries. In terms of number of doctors per capita, The US has 2.6 doctors per 1000 people, behind countries like Australia and the Netherlands at 4.1, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Sweden at 4.4, Or even Cuba at 8.4 for some reason. It seems like number of doctors per capita doesn't have a strong correlation on healthcare quality, but even in this regard the US is behind many other developed nations.
- "The US innovates the most in Healthcare, which is why it costs so much"
- It's also true that the US is a major innovator in healthcare. However, according to the 2022 World Index of Healthcare Innovation, The US is #11 worldwide with a score of 50.66, behind countries like Switzerland, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Germany with scores and ranks of 66.49 (#1), 60.04 (#2), 59.86 (#3), and 58.42 (#4) respectively. In fairness, 2022 was a rather poor year for the US, as in 2021 it was #6 and in 2020 it was #4 worldwide. But, it'd still be behind countries with universal healthcare in both years.
- "I don't want to pay for other people's healthcare"
- My rebuttal to this is that you should probably have empathy for other human beings. If everyone only paid for what they used, everyone would be poorer, because pooling resources together is more efficient and helps everyone in the long run.
- "My taxes would go up"
- Yes, but your cost of health insurance would be removed. And as we've seen by the cost of healthcare in other countries, your taxes would go up less than the current cost of your healthcare, because of the lack of profit motive. If your employer pays for your healthcare, then they should increase your wage to compensate for their savings.
By the way, I'm not even American. I'm Australian. In Australia we have publicly-funded single-payer healthcare system, and every time I hear Americans talking about their healthcare system, it is incredibly obvious to me that our system is simply superior. We still pay for healthcare, but it's a vastly smaller amount that can be waived if you can't afford it. We also have private insurance, which covers things that Medicare (our public system) doesn't - stays in private hospitals (which generally have more comfortable rooms, and better ability to choose your doctors - but don't really have superior healthcare in and of itself), as well as dental and optical services which medicare doesn't cover.
I would still call our system in Australia insufficient, because of the headache that dealing with Medicare can be, and the fact that it doesn't cover everything. It is clear to me that having everything be single-payer would cost the same amount or less, would simplify and speed up the process of getting important healthcare, and would increase the availability of healthcare to those who need it.

2023.06.04 08:03 TheTempestuous1 Is it alright to not come out and still transition?
24yr (MTF) I don't want my family to treat me differently by putting a label on it, they are very conservative growing up in the south, military father and hyper religious mother, 4 siblings. Had all the trans stereotypes since I was 2.
Had a scare around 5 when one of my moms friends mentioned my occasional "playing dress up" might be some "gay gender confusion" instead of regular kid stuff, the look of absolute horror on her face solidified my closet status to the point I automatically and immediately repressed and covered up any feminine behavior up to and until I left home @ 17 to join the military.
Even after leaving home I've done everything I can to "fix" myself up until about age 22, but this did nothing but make the dysphoria worse, after being exposed to different cultures outside of how I grew up, and talking to some professionals I accepted I won't be able to continue as I am and decided to transition now I've left the military.
Recently my mother was trying to be a bit of an ally for her job but all conversations I have with her tell me she still thinks any LGBT+ stuff is a mental illness and they need some "pray the gay away" help. So I'm hesitant to tell them I'm transitioning, I don't want them to automatically treat me differently, they're more open now so I doubt they'd get violent or disown me, but I don't want to deal with the subtle bigotry and lack of boundaries I know they still haven't gotten over.
They'll find out eventually seeing as I start hormones this month, and I don't visit often enough for any changes to be overlooked easily, but I don't want to come out to them because I no longer have the need to be accepted by them, nor the patience to deal with there prejudice.
I don't want to cut ties with them or my siblings who I get along with still, but I dont know if letting them figure it out on there own is the best move. BTW I came out to my sister in law to see what would happen, she was super supportive and excited a sister in law who was close to her age she can hang with, rn she's all i have in regards to a support system, and that's good with me.
I just got out of the military and live on my own away from everyone and travel for work, this is why they won't get a gradual and subtle change and will be more obvious anytime they see me.

2023.06.04 07:58 UrbanPrepper_SEA Copycat identity thief Narc GC siblings?
Repost with name of YouTuber removed.
Ever experience the GC sibling mimic you the black sheep to an excessive uncomfortable extent of echoing phrases ad verbatim, stealing interests, stealing two majors (film studies and anthropology) which she showed ZERO interest in prior. When it was my time to go to university first those courses were out of my family's reach financially but a few years later, she took them as if she has an original idea in her head.
This is the result of what [EDITED: a certain well-known Narc professor] calls narcissistic "snapshotting". Narcs can only relate to people as one-dimensional snapshots or stereotypes, being unable to account that as constantly evolving personalities, we're always in states of flux. Many other instances of kneejerk sneering at me for my other interests (the ones I still shared about until I finally admitted to myself she was a covert Narc who was never happy for me or has any real interests that isn't a means to getting attention to out the spotlight on herself on just how interesting she is).
Have also had women (now former) friends who would rifle through my social media like they were AI scouring data, going back years on my newsfeed or albums in a single sitting and do it for days on end, then I find them trying to emulate my interests by BUYING "dressing" that represented those interests. You can't go out and buy an interesting life and hang it on yourself like a collection of Christmas tree baubles.
It's almost like how the AliExpress algorithm still can't figure out my profile and I get redirected random ads for African women, BDSM paraphernalia, stuff for school age children, vacation homes in Bangladesh... because phones seem to be listening to my wide ranging chats with my grownup daughter, LOL, and came up with this grotesque Frankenstein botch job.
Peculiar.
