2023.06.04 17:54 letmechangee I asked chatgpt to write a story about the whites winning the civil war. What do you think?

Title: The Turn of the White Tide
Once upon a time, in the war-torn lands of Russia, the year was 1919. The country was embroiled in the chaos of a civil war, tearing it apart from within. The Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, were fighting fiercely to establish a socialist government, while the White Army, a diverse coalition of anti-Bolshevik forces, struggled to bring back the old order.
In the early stages of the war, the Red Army, consisting of the Bolsheviks and their allies, had gained significant ground, capturing major cities and consolidating their power. However, the tide was about to turn.
General Anton Denikin, leader of the White Army, was a man of great determination and strategic acumen. He knew that the key to winning the war lay in uniting the disparate factions within the White Army and seizing the initiative. He gathered his forces and launched a bold and daring offensive against the Red Army, catching them off guard.
The Red Army, overconfident in their victories, found themselves on the defensive, reeling from the relentless White assault. The White Army, fueled by a newfound unity, pressed forward with a seemingly unstoppable momentum. General Denikin's forces swept through the vast expanse of Russia, liberating cities and towns from the Red grip.
In the meantime, the international community had begun to take notice of the conflict. The Allied Powers, fearing the spread of communism, decided to lend their support to the White cause. With their backing, the White Army was able to secure valuable resources and reinforcements, further bolstering their strength.
The people of Russia, desperate for an end to the ongoing strife, began to rally behind the White Army. The atrocities committed by the Red Army during their reign only served to strengthen the resolve of the people to resist the Bolsheviks. This popular support was a vital ingredient in the White Army's recipe for success.
As the civil war raged on, the tide had clearly turned in favor of the White Army. Their forces had pushed the Red Army back into a defensive posture, and the Bolsheviks were struggling to maintain control over their remaining territories. The White Army's relentless advance continued, driving the Red Army further and further back.
Finally, in the fall of 1921, the decisive moment arrived. The White Army, now a formidable force, surrounded and besieged Moscow, the heart of the Bolshevik regime. The Red Army, weakened and demoralized, was unable to mount a successful defense.
After weeks of intense fighting, Moscow fell to the White Army. The Bolshevik leaders, including Lenin, were captured and put on trial for their crimes against the Russian people. With their defeat, the Red Army crumbled, and the civil war came to an end.
In the aftermath of the conflict, Russia was left in ruins. The people, however, were determined to rebuild and restore their nation to its former glory. Under the leadership of the victorious White Army, Russia embarked on a new path, seeking to heal the wounds of the past and forge a brighter future.
The Russian Civil War had come to an end, with the White Army emerging victorious. The tide had turned, and a new era had begun for the people of Russia, a nation forever changed by the trials it had endured. The White victory ushered in a period of stability and renewal, as the country sought to find its place in the world once more. And so

2023.06.04 16:44 I-am-the-Peel (Spoilers Extended) A Character Analysis of Varys, the fake and lying eunuch

Apologies for the length and lateness of this post, past few months have been quite chaotic and haven't had much access to the internet, I dunno when I'll be back on this sub again after this so until then, more posts from me will be a Dream for Spring Summer (probably)
Over the years I've read a great many theories about the character of Varys, his motivations, his scheming throughout the series and his endgame, but none of them have ever truly sat well with me for how much his character feels simplified. He is one of ASOIAF's most complex characters who I still believe we haven't entirely cracked yet, and I for one still believe even after writing this post up and reflecting on it, there's still some of his character that I haven't figured out.
However, I want to propose an alternative character analysis to the character of Varys, one that drifts away from the more common take on his character - Varys is not a eunuch or a friend of Tyrion Lannister, and has spent his entire life lying about his manhood to deter anyone from thinking that he could father any children, so that fAegon, his true son, would always be protected while hiding.
Let us begin by breaking down each of the lies that define his character.
First, the lie that he was castrated as a young slave and had his manhood thrown into a fire by 'a certain man', which resulted in the fire turning magically blue and 'a voice' speaking out to Varys.
"One day at Myr, a certain man came to our folly. After the performance, he made an offer for me that my master found too tempting to refuse. I was in terror. I feared the man meant to use me as I had heard men used small boys, but in truth the only part of me he had need of was my manhood. He gave me a potion that made me powerless to move or speak, yet did nothing to dull my senses. With a long hooked blade, he sliced me root and stem, chanting all the while. I watched him burn my manly parts on a brazier. The flames turned blue, and I heard a voice answer his call, though I did not understand the words they spoke. "The mummers had sailed by the time he was done with me. Once I had served his purpose, the man had no further interest in me, so he put me out. When I asked him what I should do now, he answered that he supposed I should die. To spite him, I resolved to live. I begged, I stole, and I sold what parts of my body still remained to me. Soon I was as good a thief as any in Myr, and when I was older I learned that often the contents of a man's letters are more valuable than the contents of his purse. "Yet I still dream of that night, my lord. Not of the sorcerer, nor his blade, nor even the way my manhood shriveled as it burned. I dream of the voice. The voice from the flames. Was it a god, a demon, some conjurer's trick? I could not tell you, and I know all the tricks. All I can say for a certainty is that he called it, and it answered, and since that day I have hated magic and all those who practice it. If Lord Stannis is one such, I mean to see him dead." - ACOK - TYRION X
Now there is much from this excerpt to raise complaints and questions about Varys' story;
But the weakest part of all is that Varys says that he "hates magic and all those who practise it", yet he goes to great lengths to protect and look out for Daenerys, and try to join fAegon's forces with hers, despite knowing that she has three magical dragons by her side.
"How many days until we reach the river?" he asked Illyrio that evening. "At this pace, your queen's dragons will be larger than Aegon's three before I can lay eyes upon them." "Would it were so. A large dragon is more fearsome than a small one." The magister shrugged. "Much as it would please me to welcome Queen Daenerys to Volantis, I must rely on you and Griff for that. I can serve her best in Pentos, smoothing the way for her return. So long as I am with you, though … well, an old fat man must have his comforts, yes? Come, drink a cup of wine." - ADWD - TYRION II
Illyrio is Varys' best friend and closest confidant, who he works with to protect Daenerys for much of her life and is willing to crown her as Queen alongside fAegon even though she has magical fire-breathing dragons that Varys, a victim of magical flames, would despise.
Illyrio, the same man who praised R'hllor, a God that Varys despises;
Her brother was waiting in the cool of the entry hall, seated on the edge of the pool, his hand trailing in the water. He rose when she appeared and looked her over critically. "Stand there," he told her. "Turn around. Yes. Good. You look …" "Regal," Magister Illyrio said, stepping through an archway. He moved with surprising delicacy for such a massive man. Beneath loose garments of flame-colored silk, rolls of fat jiggled as he walked. Gemstones glittered on every finger, and his man had oiled his forked yellow beard until it shone like real gold. "May the Lord of Light shower you with blessings on this most fortunate day, Princess Daenerys," the magister said as he took her hand. He bowed his head, showing a thin glimpse of crooked yellow teeth through the gold of his beard. "She is a vision, Your Grace, a vision," he told her brother. "Drogo will be enraptured." - AGOT - DAENERYS I
Neither Viserys or Daenerys were followers of R'hllor at this point, or surrounded by any followers, meaning Illyrio didn't need to bring up this form of prayer to R'hllor unless it was genuine or near genuine on his own part.
It makes little sense that Varys would entertain the company of those who worship R'hllor or magical forms of fire, if Varys truly is traumatised by what seemingly happened to him as a slave child by fire.
As well as Illyrio, this is apparent in Aerys II, who would regularly burn people in the throne room with wildfire, in the presence of Varys;
Frustrated, Aerys turned to the Wisdoms of the ancient Guild of Alchemists, who knew the secret of producing the volatile jade green substance known as wildfire, said to be a close cousin to dragonflame. The pyromancers became a regular fixture at his court as the king's fascination with fire grew. By 280 AC, Aerys II had taken to burning traitors, murderers, and plotters, rather than hanging or beheading them. The king seemed to take great pleasure in these fiery executions, which were presided over by Wisdom Rossart, the grand master of the Guild of Alchemists...so much so that he granted Rossart the title of Lord and gave him a seat upon the small council. - TWOIAF - THE TARGARYEN KINGS - AERYS II
Not only would Varys be present to witness these burnings, but Varys even encouraged Aerys to burn other individuals suspected of treachery, and fuelled both Aerys' paranoia and bloodlust;
He floated in heat, in memory. "After dancing griffins lost the Battle of the Bells, Aerys exiled him." Why am I telling this absurd ugly child? "He had finally realized that Robert was no mere outlaw lord to be crushed at whim, but the greatest threat House Targaryen had faced since Daemon Blackfyre. The king reminded Lewyn Martell gracelessly that he held Elia and sent him to take command of the ten thousand Dornishmen coming up the kingsroad. Jon Darry and Barristan Selmy rode to Stoney Sept to rally what they could of griffins' men, and Prince Rhaegar returned from the south and persuaded his father to swallow his pride and summon my father. But no raven returned from Casterly Rock, and that made the king even more afraid. He saw traitors everywhere, and Varys was always there to point out any he might have missed. So His Grace commanded his alchemists to place caches of wildfire all over King's Landing. Beneath Baelor's Sept and the hovels of Flea Bottom, under stables and storehouses, at all seven gates, even in the cellars of the Red Keep itself. - ASOS - JAIME V
Varys developed a reputation for egging on Aerys' paranoia and encouraging him to execute apparent traitors by fire, so much so that people like Barristan lay chief blame for Aerys' downfall into madness on Varys for exploiting it;
"It is not a question of wanting. The throne is mine, as Robert's heir. That is law. After me, it must pass to my daughter, unless Selyse should finally give me a son." He ran three fingers lightly down the table, over the layers of smooth hard varnish, dark with age. "I am king. Wants do not enter into it. I have a duty to my daughter. To the realm. Even to Robert. He loved me but little, I know, yet he was my brother. The Lannister woman gave him horns and made a motley fool of him. She may have murdered him as well, as she murdered Jon Arryn and Ned Stark. For such crimes there must be justice. Starting with Cersei and her abominations. But only starting. I mean to scour that court clean. As Robert should have done, after the Trident. Ser Barristan once told me that the rot in King Aerys's reign began with Varys. The eunuch should never have been pardoned. No more than the Kingslayer. At the least, Robert should have stripped the white cloak from Jaime and sent him to the Wall, as Lord Stark urged. He listened to Jon Arryn instead. I was still at Storm's End, under siege and unconsulted." He turned abruptly, to give Davos a hard shrewd look. "The truth, now. Why did you wish to murder Lady Melisandre?" - ASOS - DAVOS IV
It makes very little sense that Varys, a eunuch who seemingly hates worshippers of R'hllor and pyromancers for burning people and sacrificing his manhood to the flames as a child, would be best friends with a man who praises R'hllor or encourage his previous King to burn several people, many of whom were likely innocent of the claims of treachery put against them.
But it makes a lot more sense that Varys actually never had a problem with R'hllor or wildfire, and instead chose to encourage Aerys' paranoia so that he would always both seem useful to Aerys and be on good relations with him, to solidify his position of power on the Small Council, given that he was just a young foreign man in Westeros and wholly dependent on Aerys' support to maintain his standing in King's Landing.
The second lie of Varys' character that I wish to tackle is his apparent concern for the wellbeing of children;
"No," Ned pleaded, his voice cracking. "Varys, gods have mercy, do as you like with me, but leave my daughter out of your schemes. Sansa's no more than a child." "Rhaenys was a child too. Prince Rhaegar's daughter. A precious little thing, younger than your girls. She had a small black kitten she called Balerion, did you know? I always wondered what happened to him. Rhaenys liked to pretend he was the true Balerion, the Black Dread of old, but I imagine the Lannisters taught her the difference between a kitten and a dragon quick enough, the day they broke down her door." Varys gave a long weary sigh, the sigh of a man who carried all the sadness of the world in a sack upon his shoulders. "The High Septon once told me that as we sin, so do we suffer. If that's true, Lord Eddard, tell me … why is it always the innocents who suffer most, when you high lords play your game of thrones? Ponder it, if you would, while you wait upon the queen. And spare a thought for this as well: The next visitor who calls on you could bring you bread and cheese and the milk of the poppy for your pain … or he could bring you Sansa's head. - AGOT - EDDARD XV
Varys shows apparent disgust at the murders of Rhaegar's children, Rhaenys and Aegon, at the end of Robert's Rebellion, and the way in which they were brutally murdered.
However, we later learn in the series that Aegon seemingly survived and was swapped with a tanner's child, bought by Varys and swapped with Aegon, so that this bought child could be sacrificed to the Lannisters, who Varys presumed would want to kill Rhaegar's children;
"A true friend, our Lord Connington. He must be, to remain so fiercely loyal to the grandson of the king who took his lands and titles and sent him into exile. A pity about that. Elsewise Prince Rhaegar's friend might have been on hand when my father sacked King's Landing, to save Prince Rhaegar's precious little son from getting his royal brains dashed out against a wall." The lad flushed. "That was not me. I told you. That was some tanner's son from Pisswater Bend whose mother died birthing him. His father sold him to Lord Varys for a jug of Arbor gold. He had other sons but had never tasted Arbor gold. Varys gave the Pisswater boy to my lady mother and carried me away." "Aye." Tyrion moved his elephants. "And when the pisswater prince was safely dead, the eunuch smuggled you across the narrow sea to his fat friend the cheesemonger, who hid you on a poleboat and found an exile lord willing to call himself your father. It does make for a splendid story, and the singers will make much of your escape once you take the Iron Throne … assuming that our fair Daenerys takes you for her consort." - ADWD - TYRION VI
This entire "splendid story" as Tyrion calls it, is full of inconsistencies and unbelievable acts.
The first red flag of this story is the idea that Varys, a former slave child who abhors slavery, would willingly buy another man's young child. Also pay attention to the mention of 'Arbor gold', which has been well documented on this sub for years for how its always a signal of lies, as individuals like Littlefinger mention it in passing whenever they are telling a lie.
The second red flag is the idea that Varys, someone who seemingly abhors the murder and suffering of innocent children, would willingly sacrifice an innocent young child and allow them to be murdered just to spare another, more valuable child. The idea that Varys would also take Elia's child away from her, either willingly or unwillingly on her part, is also questionable.
The third red flag is why Varys chose only to switch Aegon with another child, and not do the same for Rhaenys. Having two imposter Targaryen children raised to believe they are Targaryens could've helped to support their claims, build them up as a rival power in Westeros and also provide a backup option for Varys incase fAegon didn't survive his childhood.
The final red flag is the idea that Varys was able to foresee how the Rebellion was going to end, accurately guessed that Rhaegar's children would be murdered by the Lannisters, knew where and when to find Elia and her children, be able to remove one of her children away from her without anyone knowing, and knew that one of Tywin's men would kill the children so brutally that next to no one would be able to recognise them - the idea story is built on a series of flimsy conveniences and incredible predictive abilities on Varys' part.
If Varys truly cared so much about the protection and well-being of children, he would not have willingly bought and sacrificed an innocent child to be sacrificed in exchange for Aegon's survival, nor would he have abandoned Rhaenys to her fate if he could have prevented it. This means either Varys truly doesn't give a damn about the wellbeing of children and just lies to the likes of Ned and Tyrion about it, or that the entire story about Aegon being swapped with a tanner's child is a lie like some fans believe, or that both stories are lies muddled together to make it more difficult to discern the truth.
Perhaps the truth of Varys' lies is best exposed in this often cited excerpt from ACOK, a conversation between him and Tyrion about the infamous "Shadow on the Wall" riddle;
Varys smiled. "Here, then. Power resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less.""So power is a mummer's trick?" "A shadow on the wall," Varys murmured, "yet shadows can kill. And ofttimes a very small man can cast a very large shadow." Tyrion smiled. "Lord Varys, I am growing strangely fond of you. I may kill you yet, but I think I'd feel sad about it." - ACOK - TYRION II
The question of who Varys refers to in this conversation has been debated for years on this sub. Some believe that Varys was alluding to fAegon, that if people believe he is the real Aegon then he will have power, even if he doesn't truly have power as a common non-Targaryen child. Others have suggested Varys was alluding to Littlefinger, who was once a young small man who rose very high in King's Landing and cast a large shadow over the realm by starting the WotFk through his schemes.
I however believe that Varys is talking about himself.
Varys was once a very small man when he came to King's Landing at Aerys' calling for him to join the Small Council. He was seen as a young ex-slave, without a lordship or house of his own, weak and powerless. But overtime, through his manipulation of Aerys, encouraging his paranoia and own self-inflicted downfall, Varys cast a very large shadow over the empire of House Targaryen in Westeros, and destroyed it forever. What Varys says here to Tyrion is a very veiled threat that he can be dangerous to Tyrion if he underestimates Varys.
Tyrion however, in his arrogance, believes that Varys is referring to him, being a "very small man" and begins considering him a friend.
This is the third and final lie of Varys' character that I wish to dissect here - the lie that he is a friend or useful ally of sorts to Tyrion.
The idea of Varys betraying Tyrion's trust and working against him is first presented to us by Cersei, when she lets slip that Varys informed her of Tyrion's plan to send the Hound into battle at the Battle of the Blackwater;
"Varys says so." The swan was too rich for his taste. A line appeared on Cersei's pale white brow, between those lovely eyes. "You put too much trust in that eunuch." "He serves me well." "Or so he'd have you believe. You think you're the only one he whispers secrets to? He gives each of us just enough to convince us that we'd be helpless without him. He played the same game with me, when I first wed Robert. For years, I was convinced I had no truer friend at court, but now . . ." She studied his face for a moment. "He says you mean to take the Hound from Joffrey." - ACOK - TYRION XII
On a first read, we are quick to dismiss Cersei's claims for how much she is built up as an antagonistic and untrustworthy character, but in later understanding her motives in her own POV chapters, we realise there may be an inkling of truth in her claims. In the case of the Hound, Varys has no reason to inform her of Tyrion's plan, however innocent and insignificant in the grand game of thrones they may be, other than to maintain some level of trust with her and to invoke conflict between the Lannister siblings, which benefits Varys.
There are frequent moments throughout the series in which Varys alludes to knowing key information and deliberately withholding it from Tyrion even if it may benefit Tyrion, including who ordered Mandon Moore to kill Tyrion;
Bronn had turned up all he could on Ser Mandon, but no doubt Varys knew a deal more . . . should he choose to share it. "The man seems to have been quite friendless," Tyrion said carefully. "Sadly," said Varys, "oh, sadly. You might find some kin if you turned over enough stones back in the Vale, but here . . . Lord Arryn brought him to King's Landing and Robert gave him his white cloak, but neither loved him much, I fear. Nor was he the sort the smallfolk cheer in tourneys, despite his undoubted prowess. Why, even his brothers of the Kingsguard never warmed to him. Ser Barristan was once heard to say that the man had no friend but his sword and no life but duty . . . but you know, I do not think Selmy meant it altogether as praise. Which is queer when you consider it, is it not? Those are the very qualities we seek in our Kingsguard, it could be said—men who live not for themselves, but for their king. By those lights, our brave Ser Mandon was the perfect white knight. And he died as a knight of the Kingsguard ought, with sword in hand, defending one of the king's own blood." The eunuch gave him a slimy smile and watched him sharply. Trying to murder one of the king's own blood, you mean. Tyrion wondered if Varys knew rather more than he was saying. - ASOS - TYRION II
When Tyrion presses Varys for information about Mandon, Varys deliberately skims over Mandon's life and offers vague beliefs about the perfect Kingsguard to try and derail Tyrion's line of questioning, and when Varys pretends not to have known about Mandon trying to kill Tyrion, he watches Tyrion "sharply" to try and gather how much Tyrion himself knows, whether or not Tyrion will seek retribution for it from the anger on his face, and almost openly mocks him for the smile he gives. Tyrion briefly considers the idea that Varys is deliberately holding information back from him, but chooses instead to talk about other matters, which is what Varys wanted.
On the matter of Varys' choosing to support the Lannisters or Stannis, Varys once again tries to confuse Tyrion with riddles and not directly answer the question;
"He accuses my brother and sister of incest. I wonder how he came by that suspicion." "Perhaps he read a book and looked at the color of a bastard's hair, as Ned Stark did, and Jon Arryn before him. Or perhaps someone whispered it in his ear." The eunuch's laugh was not his usual giggle, but deeper and more throaty. "Someone like you, perchance?" "Am I suspected? It was not me." "If it had been, would you admit it?" "No. But why should I betray a secret I have kept so long? It is one thing to deceive a king, and quite another to hide from the cricket in the rushes and the little bird in the chimney. Besides, the bastards were there for all to see." - ACOK - TYRION III
We know for certain that Varys didn't want the WotFK to start so soon or for the truth of Cersei's children to come out in AGOT because he wanted more time for Viserys' forces to grow in strength and come closer to Westeros in order to invade, either to take the throne for themselves or be the ones to kill the beloved Robert Baratheon and paint themselves as villainous usurpers to make fAegon more heroic and not taint him with Robert's blood on his hands.
However, like with Cersei and Tyrion, Varys needs to tell those on the Small Council a certain amount of secretive information in order to gain their trust and support, including Stannis. That Varys even chooses to give a deeper and more unsettling laugh about the matter is another example of him openly laughing about his treachery in Tyrion's face and Tyrion not realising it.
When Tyrion almost stumbles upon this ruse and Varys realises that his laugh was too deep and questionable, Varys tries to brush it off by saying its harder to keep a secret secret if so many people are investigating it, and insists that there were so many of Robert's bastards to find for Stannis to figure out the truth on his own. But again, this last statement from Varys is littered with half-truths.
Varys insists it is hard to keep deceiving King Robert about the truth of his children's true parentage, and even harder to keep deceiving the truth from those who are deliberately looking for the truth and wanting to find it. This in itself is a reference to his believe that Stannis was always power-hungry for the Iron Throne, and was just looking for an excuse to try to claim it for himself as Robert's true heir, regardless of whether or not Cersei's children were Robert's or not.
But his own comment about "betraying a secret I have held for so long" is a direct allusion to fAegon's existence, and his determination not to reveal the truth of his existence to anyone, including Tyrion.
Even when Tyrion rides with Illyrio and Jon Connington's entourage in ADWD, Tyrion is only led to believe that they are going to support Daenerys' claim for the Iron Throne, and has to work out for himself that fAegon is actually Aegon and the one Varys and Illyrio wish to crown;
Young Griff hesitated. "Lannister? Your father—" "—is dead. At my hand. If it please Your Grace to call me Yollo or Hugor, so be it, but know that I was born Tyrion of House Lannister, trueborn son of Tywin and Joanna, both of whom I slew. Men will tell you that I am a kingslayer, a kinslayer, and a liar, and all of that is true … but then, we are a company of liars, are we not? Take your feigned father. Griff, is it?" The dwarf sniggered. "You should thank the gods that Varys the Spider is a part of this plot of yours. Griff would not have fooled the cockless wonder for an instant, no more than it did me. No lord, my lordship says, no knight. And I'm no dwarf. Just saying a thing does not make it true. Who better to raise Prince Rhaegar's infant son than Prince Rhaegar's dear friend Jon Connington, once Lord of Griffin's Roost and Hand of the King?" "Be quiet." Griff's voice was uneasy. - ADWD - TYRION V
After Tyrion works out the truth and manipulates both fAegon and Jon Connington into riding for Westeros instead of joining forces with Daenerys, he disappears and goes off to seek her out.
This likely angers Varys, and is the reason why Varys no longer affectionately calls Tyrion by his name or by '"lord" and instead refers to him as "the imp" in ADWD's epilogue, a term that Varys knows Tyrion hates;
Ser Kevan tried to rise, but the strength had left him. He could not feel his legs. "I thought the crossbow fitting. You shared so much with Lord Tywin, why not that? Your niece will think the Tyrells had you murdered, mayhaps with the connivance of the Imp. The Tyrells will suspect her. Someone somewhere will find a way to blame the Dornishmen. Doubt, division, and mistrust will eat the very ground beneath your boy king, whilst Aegon raises his banner above Storm's End and the lords of the realm gather round him." "Aegon?" For a moment he did not understand. Then he remembered. A babe swaddled in a crimson cloak, the cloth stained with his blood and brains. "Dead. He's dead." - ADWD - EPILOGUE
Varys chooses to frame Tyrion for Kevan's murder, **deliberately and intentionally further putting his life in danger by Cersei's wrath, already knowing that Tyrion has a large bounty on his head because of her, and talks lowly of Tyrion by calling him an "Imp" and referring to his "connivance" in a very scorned tone.
Varys never considered Tyrion a friend or ally in ASOIAF and was just using him, another lie that he tells throughout the series, and by the end of ADWD, he hates Tyrion for his scheming and knowing too much information than Varys wished him to know.
But there is a bigger telling point about how much Varys uses Tyrion, and a more ground-breaking twist in the narrative that reflects both how much Varys underestimates Tyrion and how much Varys never cared for him;
In ASOS, Varys didn't tell Tyrion how to reach the Tower of the Hand to go and kill Tywin. Varys told him this key information so that Tyrion could go and kill Shae instead, who Varys considered a greater threat to him.
Shae is one of the few, perhaps the only, people in ASOIAF to see through Varys' disguises;
A whiff of something rank made him turn his head. Shae stood in the door behind him, dressed in the silvery robe he'd given her. I loved a maid as white as winter, with moonglow in her hair. Behind her stood one of the begging brothers, a portly man in filthy patched robes, his bare feet crusty with dirt, a bowl hung about his neck on a leather thong where a septon would have worn a crystal. The smell of him would have gagged a rat. "Lord Varys has come to see you," Shae announced. The begging brother blinked at her, astonished. Tyrion laughed. "To be sure. How is it you knew him when I did not?" She shrugged. "It's still him. Only dressed different." - ACOK - TYRION X
This catches Varys off guard, and any chance of seeing him being angry or looking threatened is waved away from the reader when Tyrion laughs it off and turns his attention again to his paramour Shae.
Wearing disguises is a very important part of Varys' many schemes, including visiting Ned Stark in the Black Cells as the gaoler Rugen;
"Wine," a voice answered. It was not the rat-faced man; this gaoler was stouter, shorter, though he wore the same leather half cape and spiked steel cap. "Drink, Lord Eddard." He thrust a wineskin into Ned's hands. The voice was strangely familiar, yet it took Ned Stark a moment to place it. "Varys?" he said groggily when it came. He touched the man's face. "I'm not … not dreaming this. You're here." The eunuch's plump cheeks were covered with a dark stubble of beard. Ned felt the coarse hair with his fingers. Varys had transformed himself into a grizzled turnkey, reeking of sweat and sour wine. "How did you … what sort of magician are you?" - AGOT - EDDARD XV
His disguise as Rugen is very important to Varys' plans after Tyrion's disappearance from King's Landing, as Varys seeks to frame Rugen as a Tyrell puppet who broke Tyrion from imprisonment on the Tyrells' behalf, to sow division and further paranoia between Cersei and the Tyrells;
Gold, yes, but the moment Cersei took it she could tell that it was wrong. Too small, she thought, too thin. The coin was old and worn. On one side was a king's face in profile, on the other side the imprint of a hand. "This is no dragon," she said. "No," Qyburn agreed. "It dates from before the Conquest, Your Grace. The king is Garth the Twelfth, and the hand is the sigil of House Gardener." Of Highgarden. Cersei closed her hand around the coin. What treachery is this? Mace Tyrell had been one of Tyrion's judges, and had called loudly for his death. Was that some ploy? Could he have been plotting with the Imp all the while, conspiring at Father's death? With Tywin Lannister in his grave, Lord Tyrell was an obvious choice to be King's Hand, but even so . . . "You will not speak of this with anyone," she commanded. - AFFC - CERSEI II
But this ploy to incite conflict between the Lannisters and Tyrells would have failed if Shae had lived, as she had seen through Varys' disguises and could've warned Cersei of it, something which Varys could not allow, especially given that he considered her one of Cersei's pawns after Tyrion's trial.
It is also fundamentally not in Varys' interest for Tyrion to kill Tywin, as keeping Tywin alive for now would ensure the Dornish would have someone to rise up and seek vengeance against for Elia's murder. As readers are shown in AFFC and ADWD Dornish chapters, the Martells are divided and frankly confused about how to seek vengeance for Elia's murder now that Tywin, Gregor and Armory Lorch - the three men involved in her murder - are now dead. **If Tywin had lived, Varys could've played on the Dornish thirst for vengeance against him and had fAegon promise them it in exchange for their support, something which they likely would've agreed to.
So by this point in the post, we've explored some of the key lies of Varys' character to know for sure what he is not;
So who is the real Varys? Behind all of these lies and deceptions, who is he really deep down?
Well, Varys is not a eunuch, and in fact fAegon's true father by blood. Varys has deliberately spent his life lying about being a eunuch in order to discourage people from the truth that he is the father of fAegon by Illyrio’s sister, and wants to control the Iron Throne through fAegon.
Recall Varys' conversation with Tyrion in ACOK that I previously cited earlier;
"Why should I betray a secret I have kept so long?" is the biggest hint towards fAegon's existence and Varys' own true motivations in the entire series. Varys makes this spur of the moment claim after being caught off guard by Tyrion and doesn't think it through before saying it and letting Tyrion realise there is more to him.
Varys was never castrated and he is not bald. He deliberately shaves his head to hide his true parentage and lies about being a eunuch to discourage people from believing that he is capable of fathering a child, a child with Blackfyre blood that he wishes to sit on the Iron Throne, a secret that Varys has cared for and kept so long.
The last time we see Varys in ADWD, he finally begins to tell the truth about fAegon's existence, and when he does, and speaks about the son he loves, he begins to speak in his real, deeper and non-emasculated voice;**
"Aegon?" For a moment he did not understand. Then he remembered. A babe swaddled in a crimson cloak, the cloth stained with his blood and brains. "Dead. He's dead." "No." The eunuch's voice seemed deeper. "He is here. Aegon has been shaped for rule since before he could walk. He has been trained in arms, as befits a knight to be, but that was not the end of his education. He reads and writes, he speaks several tongues, he has studied history and law and poetry. A septa has instructed him in the mysteries of the Faith since he was old enough to understand them. He has lived with fisherfolk, worked with his hands, swum in rivers and mended nets and learned to wash his own clothes at need. He can fish and cook and bind up a wound, he knows what it is like to be hungry, to be hunted, to be afraid. Tommen has been taught that kingship is his right. Aegon knows that kingship is his duty, that a king must put his people first, and live and rule for them." - ADWD - EPILOGUE
This is who Varys truly is - not a eunuch, not a victim of slavery or castration, not a man who weeps for the suffering of children, not a friend of Tyrion Lannister, but a loving father who wishes to cast a very large shadow over the greatest empire the world of ASOIAF has ever known.
TLDR:
Varys is not a eunuch but instead the father of fAegon, a secret he has spent his life protecting, and a lie he has spent his life telling to better protect his son.
Varys does not hate R'hllor or those who worship magical flames, his entire story about his manhood being sacrificed to flames is a lie he tells to gain Tyrion's trust in their efforts to defeat Stannis in ACOK. Varys is close friends with Illyrio, a man who praises R'hllor, and spent the early parts of his life encouraging Aerys to feed innocent people to the flames of wildfire.
Varys does not hate the suffering of innocent children, he was prepared to buy an innocent child from a man and sacrifice him in order to protect the "real" Aegon, he was prepared to abandon Rhaenys to her brutal death even if he could have saved her too and prepared to send Viserys and Daenerys into a doomed invasion of Westeros that would've led to their deaths just to make fAegon appear a more heroic saviour compared to them.
Varys was never a friend or ally to Tyrion but instead was using him ever since they first met. He has repeatedly withheld important information from him such as who hired Mandon Moore to kill Tyrion and how Stannis figured out the truth about Cersei's children, and on frequent occasions has nearly openly laughed in Tyrion's face at both his misfortune and the information Varys withheld from him. Varys also manipulated Tyrion into killing Shae so that she would not expose Varys' identity as Rugen and didn't trust Tyrion with the information about fAegon's existence, something that Tyrion had to figure out himself. Varys also talks lowly of Tyrion at the end of ADWD as a "conniving Imp" which reflects Varys' true feelings about Tyrion.
Varys has spent his life shaving his hair and lying about being a eunuch to discourage anyone from believing he could father fAegon and better protect him, so that fAegon could one day take the Iron Throne, and cast a very large shadow over the Targaryen Empire forever.

Egg-cake in heirloom cast iron pan, traditional cuisine from southern Sweden 🇸🇪 (recipe in comments)
This pan was passed down to me 10 years ago from my mother, and from her mother to her before that. It’s my go to for all egg-related things, traditional Scanian egg-cake being my favourite. So I wanted to share my slidey bois from yesterday with y’all!
Egg-cake is something between an omelette and pancake. It’s traditionally served with stekfläsk (thick bacon) 🥓, raw stirred lingonberries 🍒, and a Pilsner style lager 🍺.
Recipe (4 servings), makes two or four cakes depending on pan width, it’s supposed to be thick, really thick) - 8 eggs - 8dl whole milk, preferably farm style milk - 3dl wheat flour, or suitable gluten free alternative if your a celiac, I’ve made it gluten-free and it’s just as good. - 1,5 teaspoons of salt - A generous amount of butter, and then some
Mix all the ingredients except for the butter in a bowl. Pre-heat your pan by frying a generous amount of butter to beurre noisette (browned butter), mix the butter into your bowl.
Add some more butter to the pan for every cake and every time you turn it. Keep the heat medium-low, pour some mixture into the pan, 1/4th of you’re using a small pan like me or 1/2 if your using a larger pan.
While cooking use a wooden spatula to stir and lift up chunks from the bottom of the pan until the the batter is thick and creamy all over, at this point increase the heat to create some brown crust.
Use a plate or lid to cover the pan, flip the entire pan covered to get the cake out, add some more butter to the pan and slide the cake back into the pan to finish the other side. Repeat for all cakes, you can keep them warm on low heat in the oven.
Fry up some crispy bacon and serve with raw stirred lingonberries and beer (or milk for the little ones), if you can not procure lingonberries you can substitute with lingonberry jam.

Impact of Binance’s Departure from the Canadian Market on Canadians

https://preview.redd.it/5k1x84svvz3b1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5dbbedbce777eea2c2a5e4a8fc3b93d32c98299d
In an increasingly digital world, cryptocurrency has taken its place as a major player in the global financial ecosystem. Leading the charge in this dynamic industry is Binance, one of the world’s largest and most influential cryptocurrency exchanges. So, when the news broke that Binance had decided to exit the Canadian market, it sent shockwaves through the community of Canadian crypto traders, investors, and blockchain enthusiasts. Lets dive into the implications of Binance’s withdrawal from the Canadian market, and explore the potential ways this move could negatively impact Canadians.

Cryptocurrency: A Brief Overview

Before we delve into the issue at hand, let’s briefly explain what cryptocurrency is and the role that Binance plays in this sector. Cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual form of currency that uses cryptography for security. This makes it incredibly secure and difficult to counterfeit. Bitcoin, introduced in 2009, was the first decentralized cryptocurrency, and since then, thousands of cryptocurrencies have been created, with varying degrees of acceptance, adoption, and value.
Cryptocurrency exchanges, like Binance, serve as digital marketplaces where traders can buy, sell, or exchange cryptocurrencies for other digital assets or traditional fiat currencies. Binance, in particular, has been a major player in this space since its launch in 2017, providing a platform for trading a wide variety of cryptocurrencies and offering a range of services that go beyond the basic trading function, such as staking, lending, and more.

The Implications of Binance’s Withdrawal

Loss of Access to a Wide Variety of Cryptocurrencies

Binance is renowned for offering one of the widest selections of cryptocurrencies on the market. With Binance’s departure, Canadian traders and investors lose access to this diverse selection, which can limit their exposure to the broader crypto market. While other Canadian exchanges offer popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, many smaller or less common cryptocurrencies (often referred to as “altcoins”) may not be available on these platforms. This means that for Canadians interested in these more niche markets, opportunities for investment and diversification will be more limited.

Higher Transaction Costs

Binance is known for its relatively low transaction costs, and its departure from the Canadian market could mean higher fees for Canadian crypto users. Other local exchanges, while compliant with Canadian law, may not be able to compete with the lower fee structure Binance was able to offer due to its larger global user base. This could potentially discourage new entrants from exploring cryptocurrency and increase costs for existing crypto investors and traders.

Impact on Liquidity

Liquidity, the ease with which an asset can be converted into cash without affecting the market price, is a critical factor in any financial market. Binance, given its size and volume of trades, provided significant liquidity in the cryptocurrency market. The absence of Binance could negatively impact the overall liquidity of the crypto market in Canada, possibly resulting in less efficient markets and wider bid-ask spreads.

Delay in Access to New Cryptocurrencies and Features

Binance is often one of the first exchanges to list new cryptocurrencies and implement new features. With the exchange no longer operating in Canada, Canadians may face delays in gaining access to new cryptocurrencies or innovative features until they are adopted by local exchanges. This could put Canadian crypto traders and investors at a disadvantage compared to their global counterparts.

Decreased Consumer Confidence

Lastly, Binance’s exit could decrease consumer confidence in the cryptocurrency market in Canada. When a major player like Binance leaves, it may cause some traders and investors to question the stability and future of the Canadian crypto market, leading to reduced participation and investment.

Navigating the Post-Binance Landscape

While the departure of Binance is a significant loss for the Canadian crypto community, it’s not the end of the road for cryptocurrency in Canada. In fact, this could present a ripe opportunity for local exchanges to step up and fill the void left by Binance.
To navigate this new landscape, Canadians might need to diversify their trading and investment platforms. They could consider spreading their activities across several local and international exchanges, ensuring they still have access to a wide variety of cryptocurrencies. Local exchanges such as NDAX, Bitbuy, and Shakepay, which comply with Canadian financial regulations, offer several popular cryptocurrencies and might expand their offerings in light of Binance’s exit.
The higher transaction costs present a hurdle, but they also open up opportunities for competitive pricing among existing exchanges. Competition could lead to lower fees over time as exchanges vie for market share. In the meantime, Canadians may need to account for these higher costs in their trading and investment strategies.
Liquidity could remain a concern, especially for less common cryptocurrencies. However, if existing exchanges can expand their user base and trading volumes, they may be able to mitigate some of these liquidity issues. In addition, decentralized exchanges (DEXs) like Uniswap or PancakeSwap, could be an alternative for those looking for liquidity, although these platforms come with their own risks and challenges.
Delayed access to new cryptocurrencies and features is a challenge that local exchanges will need to tackle. They could do this by actively seeking to list new cryptocurrencies and implement innovative features to attract users. Moreover, traders and investors can voice their interest in new currencies and features to incentivize quicker adoption by these exchanges.
While consumer confidence might be shaken in the short term, the Canadian crypto market can rebound by demonstrating robustness and adaptability in the face of this change. Regulatory bodies could also play a role in bolstering confidence by providing clear guidelines and protections for cryptocurrency users.
In conclusion, while Binance’s departure from the Canadian market undeniably has negative implications for Canadians, it also presents an opportunity for local exchanges to step up and for regulators to clarify their stance on cryptocurrencies. Despite the challenges, the future of the crypto market in Canada remains promising. With the right adaptations and strategies, Canadian traders and investors can continue to participate effectively and profitably in the dynamic world of cryptocurrencies.

Canadian Crypto Exchanges and the Blockchain Landscape: A Lost Opportunity

As we navigate the post-Binance landscape, it’s crucial to examine the broader implications of Binance’s withdrawal from Canada, particularly in light of Bybit’s exit as well. The underlying factors contributing to these decisions highlight the challenges Canadian cryptocurrency exchanges and the Canadian blockchain industry face, ultimately cutting Canadians off from a significant generational wealth opportunity. Moreover, the expansion of exchanges like Coinbase into Canada might not be the boon it initially appears to be.

Technical Development of Canadian Exchanges

Canadian exchanges have historically lagged behind their international counterparts in terms of technical development. Platforms like Binance and Bybit have consistently outpaced local exchanges in their speed of innovation, diversity of offerings, and user experience.
For instance, Canadian exchanges often have a narrower range of trading pairs and lack advanced trading features such as futures and options trading, leveraged trading, and staking services. Moreover, the application programming interfaces (APIs) provided by Canadian exchanges often do not support the level of functionality and efficiency demanded by algorithmic traders and institutional investors.
The withdrawal of Binance and Bybit, both offering a wide range of services and technologically advanced platforms, exposes this gap in the market. The technological edge these exchanges offered was a significant attraction for traders and investors, and their departure leaves a void that Canadian exchanges will struggle to fill in the short term.

Project Jasper and the Failure to Deliver a CBDC

The Bank of Canada initiated Project Jasper back in 2016, aiming to explore the feasibility of a central bank digital currency (CBDC). However, despite being a pioneer in this area, Canada has yet to deliver a CBDC, putting it behind other nations that have made significant strides in this area, such as China with its digital yuan.
The lack of progress on Project Jasper raises concerns about Canada’s commitment to embracing blockchain technology and digital currencies. It presents a missed opportunity for Canada to position itself as a leader in the digital currency space and may contribute to the perceived instability and uncertainty that led to Binance’s withdrawal.

Regulatory Scrutiny and Missed Wealth Opportunities

Binance’s official statement reveals a troubling reality: regulatory scrutiny in Canada has reached a level that major crypto businesses find untenable. This trend effectively cuts Canadians off from the significant wealth opportunities that the crypto market presents.
While regulations are crucial to protect consumers and prevent illicit activities, they should ideally strike a balance, encouraging innovation and growth. A restrictive regulatory environment can stifle the growth of the crypto industry and dissuade international businesses from operating in Canada, limiting the options available to Canadian consumers and investors.

Coinbase’s Expansion into Canada: A Mixed Blessing

While some may view Coinbase’s expansion into Canada as a positive development, it may not be as beneficial as it first appears. Coinbase has been criticized for its higher fees, relative to other exchanges, which could increase the cost of trading for Canadians.
Moreover, Coinbase’s complaint about Binance’s USD stablecoin (BUSD) surpassing its USD Coin (USDC) in market cap, which subsequently triggered an SEC investigation, reflects a level of competition that may not be in the best interests of consumers. The resulting end of BUSD distribution by PAXOS following this investigation means a loss of choice for users who favored this stablecoin.

The Future of the Canadian Crypto Industry

With Binance and Bybit exiting the Canadian market, the future of the Canadian crypto industry is at a critical juncture. The growth and development of this industry hinge on the ability of regulators to strike a balance between consumer protection and encouraging innovation.
Canada’s blockchain industry has the potential for enormous growth and the capacity to generate significant wealth for Canadians. However, for this potential to be realized, regulators, exchanges, and the broader industry must work together. Striking the right balance in regulatory oversight is crucial. Too stringent, and it stifles innovation and deters international players. Too lenient, and it risks consumer protection and market integrity.
For Canadian exchanges, this is a time of both challenge and opportunity. The departure of Binance and Bybit undoubtedly creates a void, but it also presents an opportunity for these platforms to step up and meet the market’s needs. They will need to invest in technological development, enhance their offerings, and improve the overall user experience to compete effectively in the global market.
Furthermore, the expansion of Coinbase into Canada calls for careful examination. While it provides another platform for Canadians, its higher fees and the role it played in the SEC investigation into BUSD suggest that its presence may not be entirely beneficial for Canadian users. These factors should be taken into account by users when choosing a platform for their trading and investment activities.
Moreover, the slow progress on Project Jasper and the lack of a CBDC reflect a missed opportunity for Canada to establish itself as a leader in the digital currency space. To keep pace with global developments and ensure Canadians are not left behind, it is essential that such initiatives are pursued with greater urgency and commitment.
Lastly, the broader Canadian blockchain industry could also play a role in the post-Binance landscape. Other sectors of the industry, such as blockchain development companies, crypto mining operations, and blockchain-based startups, can contribute to the growth and diversification of the industry. By fostering an ecosystem that encourages innovation and growth in the blockchain space, Canada can ensure that it remains a significant player in the global crypto market.
In conclusion, while the withdrawal of Binance and Bybit from the Canadian market poses significant challenges, it also presents an opportunity for introspection, growth, and development. By addressing the issues highlighted by these withdrawals and taking strategic steps to advance its crypto industry, Canada can ensure that its citizens continue to have access to the wealth opportunities presented by the dynamic and ever-evolving world of cryptocurrencies.

Impact on Canadian Blockchain Startups

Binance’s withdrawal could also have an impact on the Canadian blockchain startup ecosystem. With the exit of this key player, new startups could face increased challenges in raising capital, particularly through Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) or token sales. Binance had been instrumental in driving liquidity and providing a platform for new tokens, and its absence may slow down the capital raising process for Canadian startups.
Furthermore, Binance provided support to many startups through its incubator and accelerator programs. The exit might mean fewer resources and opportunities for early-stage Canadian blockchain startups, potentially slowing down innovation in the sector.
However, this also creates an opportunity for local venture capital firms and angel investors to step up their investments in the blockchain space. By increasing support for homegrown startups, they can help drive innovation and growth in the Canadian blockchain sector.

The Role of Decentralized Finance (DeFi) in the Canadian Market

Decentralized finance (DeFi) could play a significant role in filling the void left by Binance and Bybit. DeFi platforms, built on blockchain networks like Ethereum, offer a wide range of financial services, including lending, borrowing, and trading, without the need for intermediaries.
The advantage of DeFi is that it is open to anyone with internet access, irrespective of geographical restrictions. This means that Canadian users could potentially access a range of services similar to those offered by Binance and Bybit through DeFi platforms.
However, DeFi also comes with its own set of risks, including smart contract vulnerabilities and a higher level of complexity, which might be challenging for less tech-savvy users. Also, DeFi platforms are relatively unregulated, which might pose regulatory and legal challenges. As such, while DeFi offers promising opportunities, users must proceed with caution and perform thorough due diligence.
In conclusion, while the Canadian crypto landscape is facing significant challenges due to the exit of Binance and Bybit, it is also presented with unique opportunities for growth and innovation. It’s clear that Canada’s blockchain sector is at a critical juncture, and its future will depend on the steps taken by exchanges, startups, investors, and regulators in the coming months and years. Despite the hurdles, the potential for a vibrant, thriving crypto industry in Canada remains, provided it can successfully navigate these complex issues.

2023.06.04 08:05 galacticsharkbait Is this all there is to life?

Sorry I’m advance for this long ass rant/vent. I have no one to talk to and just need to get this off my chest.
I work & commute 12 hrs/day 5 days a week. I wake up at 3:30am everyday just so I can maybe have 30 minutes to drink my coffee and read my book. I leave at 6am land get home around 6pm. I get one episode of Bluey to sit down and nurse my toddler before rushing to make dinner, clean up dinner mess, take a shower with my kid, then read her a book and be in bed by 7:30.
Saturdays I spend catching up on chores and laundry and doing house/yard projects. Sunday I spend a good portion of the day meal prepping for the week because if I don’t, I will end up feeding my kid cereal for dinner all week and buying junk food at the gas station on my lunch break. Then I try to spend part of the day playing with and focusing on my kid, but that doesn’t always happen because I’m usually at my emotional max getting tugged on and yelled at to be held while I’m trying to do a million things. I’m in bed by 7:30pm for work the next day.
I have no friends. Literally, none. I have no social media so not even the illusion of a community/friends. Sometimes I’m lonely and wish I had friends, but then I realize even if I did, I’d have no time to ever do anything with them. The thought of even trying to make a friend at this point sounds daunting and exhausting and impossible.
My sister invited me to a girls camping trip this weekend with her friends, and my mom actually agreed to watch my kid overnight tonight so I could go, and I was going to stay in the trailer with her opposed to bringing a tent so it would have been totally stress-free. It would have been the first fun adult activity I would attend in almost a year. But my daughter was sick last weekend and my mom decided she didn’t want to risk getting sick. So I couldn’t go.
I wanted to go to Home Depot today to get some stuff for my garden, and I couldn’t even do it because I did not have the mental energy to deal with wrangling my adventurous toddler who refuses to sit in carts or just walk next to me in a store. This happens every weekend—I want to go grocery shopping, end up not going because I don’t have the time or energy so I either order grocery delivery/pickup. I want to take my kid to do fun stuff but doing so will mean half my weekend to-dos don’t get done then I’m stressed out all week.
My kid is constantly getting sick and I am always missing work to stay home with her. Any PTO I accrue will go to all the time I take off to stay home with her. I have 100% sole custody with zero involvement from her father. Once every few months when a grandparent agrees to an overnight, it’s always on a Friday where I’m too tired to even finish a movie before falling asleep by 8. Then I have to get my kid by 9am the next day because you know the grandparents have lives too, they can’t just watch their grandkid all day (heavy /s if it wasn’t obvious). Even if I could muster up the energy to do something fun, I have no friends to go do anything with. Once I went out by myself last summer and ended up going home crying at 10pm because seeing all these groups of friends out made me realize just how lonely I am. I went out hoping to make friends and no one wanted to be my friend. I thought working would gain me some friends, but I work with literally all men and I’m an attractive female so trying to start an outside of work friendship with any of my coworkers is just a recipe for disaster.
If the rest of my life goes like this, what kind of memories will my kid have? What memories will I have? Working my ass off and being too tired to ever get rewarded for it. Hell even if I just worked 4 10s, I feel like my life would be immensely better. I work a physically demanding job now, but before this I just was waitressing for the majority of my life. Can’t work that field anymore though because there is zero flexibility which is essential when you’re a single parent. I wish I could have a WFH job but everything I’ve seen you need either experience in the field, some sort of license, or degree. None of which I have. I also have a felony record (over 4yrs old) so I don’t have unlimited possibilities on where I can work. Hell I’d even be happy to work like a 2-3 day workweek of 13-14hr shifts if I was able to find childcare for those kind of hours. Part of me almost wants to just go back to school and try to live off the grant money again, but I have to go full time to get that money meaning I can’t even work a part time job because I cannot handle that much on my plate.
I don’t know man. Lately I just keep thinking, is this all there is to life? I love my kid to death but I can’t even enjoy my time with her anymore because there’s always something to do. I wish I could just be one of those families who lives out of a converted van/rv and travels the country and actually lives. I hate this. I don’t know what to do anymore. I’m so lost and alone.

2023.06.04 04:11 Pred4tedHick0ry Fighting Game Idea: Xbox Crossover Fighter

I would love it if, with all the IPs Xbox has under their belt currently (not even including ABK) and IPs known to be largely popular on the system, it would be sick as hell if they decided to make a fighting game in the future cause, let’s be real,
Who WOULDN’T pay good money to see Master Chief and Doomguy absolutely beat the ever loving dog shit out of each other?
I would want it to be a traditional 3D fighter, 1v1, 90 seconds with gameplay and controls similar to fighters like Street Fighter 6 (Modern Controls) and BlazBlue. There’s a Light, Medium, and Heavy Attacks along with a “Rage” attack where the attack varies from characters. You have your Distortion Gauge (Meter) which you can perform Special Moves & EX versions of those special moves, and a character’s Ultimate Distortion Move (their ultimate basically).
For Characters here’s a Quick List
For your starting 14 characters, you’ll have:
Master Chief (Halo)
Doom Slayer (DOOM)
Blinx (Blinx The Time Sweeper)
Kaim Argonar (Lost Odyssey)
General RAAM (Gears)
Jago (Killer Instinct)
Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark)
Banjo & Kazooie (B&K)
Conker (Conker’s Bad Fur Day)
Kasumi (Dead or Alive)
Edgar (Phantom Dust)
Chai (Hi-Fi Rush)
Kale (Hi-Fi Rush)
Rasputin (Psychonauts)
Unlockable Characters:
Jack of Spades (Fable)
Arbiter (Halo)
Fulgore (Killer Instinct)
Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden/DOA)
Seth Balmore (Lost Odyssey)
Orchid (Killer Instinct)
Daveth (DOOM)
Mannimarco (Elder Scrolls)
I imagine the story is maybe an Alternate Timeline Alduin (Final Boss/Main Villain) devoured his Timeline’s Nirn and Defeated the Last Dragonborn. He gained more power and found out other worlds exist and plans to devour them all. The playable characters would fight amongst each other as they soon fight to save their worlds and stop Alduin.
This is just a quick idea I thought up of. Any thoughts on this?

2023.06.04 02:17 stiobhard_g Soy flour recipes.

I buy a lot of soy flour for my granola recipe I do. But the recipe doesn't use that much per batch. But I understand why it is there.
I also understand the distinction between soy flour and soy powder and why they have different uses.
I have read that alot of vegetarians used soy flour more often in the 60s and 70s, so my granola recipe may be a relic of that era.
I could also make baked goods with it... Pancakes, muffins, biscuits... But I still haven't explored that much.
I am curious if anyone knows any interesting uses for soy flour and/or knows any veg recipes from the 70s (or earlier) that featured soy flour.
Thank you!!

2023.06.04 00:15 cheesychapli How to lean bulk on an Indian non-veg diet

So I live in the west and currently trying to lean bulk (gain muscle but not gain fat). I hate eat white people food like plain chicken breast and broccoli. I really miss my own food but every time my parents cook the foods I like, it seems a pool of oil is mandatory to cook the food. I'm not able to get my protein count (200g/day) on a veg diet and don't particularly like veg food anyways.
Does anyone have any tips/recipes for good non-veg healthy recipes for foods like mutton sukka, chicken 65, nalli chops, kariveppila Chicken (Curry leaf chicken), thakalli prawn fry, Vanjarram fry, nethili etc (others too). I'm trying to look for ways to cook regular fry/roast meals without oil

I'm south Indian but also love north indian non-veg meals and mughlai cuisine. Any way to make kebab, nihari, chicken-makhni etc. ??

2023.06.03 23:29 --maciej 28[M4F] UK/London/Europe - nerdy guy looking for his other half

Please note, I'm seeking a serious relationship :)
_______________________________________________
Edit: pictures of myself are on my profile.
Hello there! :p
I'll try to make this short, sweet and to the point.
Who am I looking for?
I'm looking for someone I can connect who shares in my passions and world views, someone I can enjoy life with, all its ups and downs, the sweet and the sour moments. As for more specific personality traits, I really adore someone that is caring, loving, kind, respectful and open-minded.
As for appearance wise, I am not sure what to say because it really all comes down to personality for me.
Who am I and what are my hobbies/passions?
I guess I am a bit of a nerd, at least that's what I've been called a few times. Though, honestly, I enjoy doing a whole bunch of things that bring me joy. Things like playing video games, football, board games with friends, running in the park, exploring, watching documentaries on YouTube, tinkering with computers, etc.
Actually, I'll note down some specifics here, too:
- Anime (The Seven Deadly Sins, SAO, Record of Grancrest War, Angel Beats!, The Dragon Prince, Legend of Korra, etc)
- Video games (Skyrim, Fallout, Dishonored, Sims, Pokemon, CoD Zombies, Borderlands, Mass Effect and more)
- Sports (football, badminton, tennis, squash, volleyball, running, riding on a bike)
- Movies (Marvel movies, DC movies, Matrix, Daredevil, Star Wars, The Lord of The Rings and more)
As for my passions, I feel passionate about gaming, animals, technology and football - particularly the Champions League - to put it all succinctly. I understand if you don't love football or tech, it's all good, I don't expect you or anyone to be into every single thing that I am into :)
What can I offer you?
Hmmm... I can be your personal tech support, I can be your fitness partner, I can be your chef if the need arises, I can be your essential boyfriend pillow you cuddle at night, just to name a few. But most importantly, I can be your special someone you can rely on and be there for you and support you because life is hard already as it is.
Though, back tracking a little bit, I admit that I don't know too many cooking recipes, but despite that, some of my everyday dishes are quite exquisite, like my delicious strawberry jam (or Nutella) pancakes - just wanted to clarify that :p
Any deal breakers?
I only have 3 deal breakers:
- Smoker
- Does not like animals/pets
- Not child-free
With that said, thank you for reading my post :)
P.S. Did you catch my Star Wars reference "Hello there" ?

I am still in deep mourning over the loss of the Sawhorse restaurant. My wife and I were regulars and I suffer a serious addiction to their pancakes. I've been without for too long now and I'm getting edgy.
Does anyone know a good recipe for similar flapjacks or know of another place to get an out of this world short stack?
Bonus question: What other spots in Asheville serve poutine?

2023.06.03 16:29 One_Country1537 The worst side effect of being a Marth main helped me...

A great amount of SSBU players would rather question my decision to main Marth than be my friend. "Why do you play Marth over Lucina?", "Dude, here's a reality check: Marth is garbage.", "Play Lucina.", "You will never win anything with Marth.", "Can't wait for you to lose then cower to Lucina.", "Too inconsistent.", "Ignaize isn't good; stop looking up to him.", "I hate how you play Marth." Man, I can go on and on about this.
Most conversations I've had were about why I main Marth, whether that lead to a good conversation or not. Marth is such an overshadowed character that I almost always gain somewhat negative attention whenever I play or talk about Marth. I don't scream "MARTH IS TOP TIER" like a lunatic, but I do think he's a really good character. Somehow that's very problematic to a lot of players and I don't see why.
Nothing anybody says will make me drop Marth, but I have been rather discouraged lately regarding tournament runs. I tend to perform badly in tournaments, but I can't blame Marth for that. I can only blame myself. After ranting on Smash Rage forums, I've come to realize that I am not a bad player at all. Despite losing badly, I finally decided to think about why I lose so much. This, and some other outside factors, made me more confident.
Looking back at most of my tournament losses, I see why I lost so badly. I have been focusing on neutral, advantage state, and disadvantage state so much that I forgot how little that helps if I don't know a thing about the character my opponents plays. In other words, I have bad MU experience. Every loss I've had was to a character that I hardly fight (at a high to top level) in my region. So far, this includes Pikachu, Terry, Meta Knight, ROB (real shocker), MARTH (I got destroyed in the ditto), Hero, Min Min, Duck Hunt, and Game & Watch. However, every time I actually did do well was because I knew an MU well. I noticed this in my recent online play as well. If I know an MU, I play like a beast. If I don't, I get stomped into a pancake. I found it surprising how all of the MUs I am prepared for, hardly show up in my region! With this in mind, I will study more match-ups based on the popular characters I see in my locals. I don't know why I'm just now doing this, but okay.
I know I said I wouldn't, and I sound like a big loser and a hypocrite who deserves to... I shouldn't go that far. Anyhow, I believe it is best I give myself another month. I haven't showed myself some mercy in years. I've hated on myself and I've ripped myself apart over so many things, including Smash. A part of me wants to quit, but another part of me longs for that one day where I play Marth and shatter the whole scene. I cannot wait for that day.

2023.06.03 13:53 arrrbooey Graduated 06/01! Diet controlled until last week and a half

Hi all this subreddit has been so helpful so I wanted to write down how things went. I'm obsessed with my little guy and so happy everything went smoothly.
I have been diet controlled with some spikes from week 28 until week 37 when my fasting numbers started to spike from mid 80s into high 90 low 100s. No one told me in the Dr office that once I was on metformin it would be recommended to be induced before my due date until it was practically week 39.
Friday before memorial weekend we were expecting a call to schedule a date to be induced but no one called back. This got me nervous all weekend haha. We actually had a last Dr appt Tuesday after memorial and finally got a call at 9:30am. We confirmed to have it done 06/01 and arrive at hospital the night before to start. At the doctor's appt, I was told I was 1cm and confirmed baby head was down. End weight gain was about 20-22 lbs and my grown scans have shown he was not a big baby or caused any concern.
Arrived at the hospital at 7:50pm to check in. I had not eaten anything for dinner yet. Got settled in and changed by 8:30 and they had me take some oral medicine (forgot what it's called) to soften my cervix. Was told I could only eat until midnight. Ate a small bowl of chicken noodle soup from Panera and a couple of snacks I brought from home. Took one last metformin as well. Sleep was kind of sporadic.
At 8:30 my delivery doctor came in and gave me the rundown and checked that I was 2cm. I was then hooked up to the IV and started pitocin. After speaking with the nurse, gauging pain, and when the anesthesialogist would come to administer the epidural, at around 9:45ish I said I needed to ask for it. Pitocin contractions felt like I was going to explode from the inside out. I had to wait for the fluid bag to empty before they could start the epidural. By the time this was done, it was maybe 11am. Pain level was like an 8-9 and all I could do was breathe and listen to directions. Finally got it done and moved to lay down and wait for it to kick in.
Wow am I thankful for it. I do not know how I would have survived labor without it. It makes me wonder if a natural labor would have felt differently. I could now finally rest and wait until I am 10cm. The adrenaline from the contractions before the epidural wore me out.
I probably was in and out of sleep until just before 3pm. Around then it felt like the contractions felt a little stronger and I thought the epidural was wearing off. Right when I said that and pinged the nurse, my doctor came in, checked my cervix and said well you're 10cm, it's go time 😂
Here is where I thank my weightlifting journey of 3-4 years. My nurse held one leg and my husband the other. To push I was told to do a deep breath, hold, and do a constant push as if needing to poop for ten seconds. Do this three times per contraction.
I did this for maybe 15 minutes with them and my nurse said I'll tell you when to stop. It's insane how much this whole induction was with just nurses. I saw my doctor for maybe 20 minutes total. Anyways they got him in for the final pushes. 15 minutes later he was out!
Immediately he was placed on my chest and I thought I was going to me more emotional, but more so relieved that it was practically over and he was crying on my chest.
I only had a minor tear probably not large enough to be classified. Was stitched up and had mom and baby skin to skin time.
The pushing was the easiest part of all of this 😭. He came to be 6lbs 8oz and 20.5". They tested his blood sugars four times over the course of a day and they all passed! Thankfully my collistrum was enough and found a method for him to feed well.
Overall just so so so relieved everything worked out and thankful for all the previous moms on Reddit writing out their experience 🥰. I'm currently eating a fat stack of pancakes with syrup, orange juice, grapes, pork sausage, and scrambled eggs. 🫡 There's light at the end of the tunnel.

Class limits:
  1. Warrior:
  2. Limited proficiency in magic: While warriors can learn basic combat-related spells, their magical abilities are limited compared to dedicated spellcasting classes.
  3. Heavy armor restriction: Warriors are unable to effectively use light or medium armor due to their focus on heavy armor and melee combat.
  4. Mage:
  5. Fragile physical defense: Mages have low health and limited physical defense, making them vulnerable to close-quarters combat. They rely on their magical abilities to deal damage and control the battlefield.
  6. Mana management: Mages must carefully manage their mana pool as casting spells depletes their resources. They may need to rely on mana-restoring items or wait for natural mana regeneration during combat.
  7. Archer:
  8. Limited melee combat skills: Archers excel in ranged combat but are less proficient in close-quarters battles. They rely on maintaining distance and precision attacks.
  9. Lower physical resilience: Archers have lighter armor, providing less protection against physical attacks. They need to rely on evasion and kiting techniques to survive.
  10. Rogue:
  11. Fragile defense: Rogues have lower health and rely on agility and stealth to avoid damage. They excel at burst damage and quick strikes but can be easily overwhelmed in prolonged battles.
  12. Limited spellcasting: Rogues have access to minor utility spells but lack the depth and power of dedicated spellcasting classes.
  13. Paladin:
  14. Limited offensive magic: Paladins focus primarily on defensive and supportive magic, with limited offensive spells available. They excel in protecting and healing allies but have reduced damage output.
  15. Alignment restrictions: Paladins must adhere to a strict code of conduct and moral alignment. Engaging in certain actions or choices contrary to their code may result in penalties or loss of abilities.
  16. Necromancer:
  17. Vulnerability to light and holy magic: Necromancers are weakened by holy or light-based magic. Spells from these sources can hinder their abilities and deal increased damage to them.
  18. Ethical considerations: The use of dark magic and manipulation of life force may have consequences on the character's alignment and how they are perceived by NPCs and factions.
  19. Engineer:
  20. Reliance on gadgets and resources: Engineers require a steady supply of resources, materials, and tools to craft and use their gadgets effectively. These resources need to be collected or purchased regularly.
  21. Fragility of gadgets: Gadgets created by engineers may have limited durability or charges, requiring maintenance or repair to keep them functional.
  22. Blacksmith:
  23. Resource and time requirements: Blacksmiths need access to various materials and specialized equipment to craft powerful items. The creation process may require time, skill, and additional components.
  24. Dependent on external sources for magical enhancements: While blacksmiths can enhance weapons and armor, they cannot directly imbue them with magical properties. They need to collaborate with mages or acquire magical materials to infuse magical abilities into items.
  25. Tamer:
  26. Limited control over higher-level creatures: Tamers may struggle to tame and control extremely powerful or legendary creatures. These creatures may require special conditions or quests to unlock their full potential.
  27. Bonding time: Developing a strong bond with a creature takes time and effort. Instantly taming or changing companions may hinder the growth and effectiveness of the tamer's bond
Extra class: Sanctifier: As a Sanctifier in "Chronicles of Eternia," you embody compassion and healing. Armed with restorative magic, you mend wounds, bolster spirits, and empower your allies. Your touch brings renewal, while your blessings strengthen defenses and amplify attacks. Purifying ailments and cleansing curses, you protect from corruption. While limited in offense and reliant on allies, your presence brings hope and resilience. As a Sanctifier, your healing touch turns the tides of battle, ensuring your allies stand strong against darkness.
Limits
• Limited Offensive Abilities: Sanctifiers focus primarily on support and healing, which means they have limited offensive capabilities. Their offensive spells are less potent compared to dedicated damage-dealing classes.
• Fragile Defense: Sanctifiers typically wear light armor, providing less physical protection. They rely on their healing abilities and supportive spells to keep themselves and their allies alive.
• Mana Management: Healing spells consume mana, and Sanctifiers must manage their resources carefully. They may need to use mana regeneration abilities or rely on potions to replenish their mana during prolonged battles.
• Vulnerability to Disruption: Sanctifiers' casting can be interrupted by enemy attacks. They need to be positioned strategically or protected by their allies to ensure uninterrupted healing and support.
• Limited Mobility: The Sanctifier's focus on healing and support restricts their movement abilities. They may not possess swift dashes or teleportation skills commonly found in more agile classes.
• Reliance on Allies: Sanctifiers thrive when working in tandem with other classes, as their healing and support abilities are most effective when there are teammates to protect and assist. They may struggle to solo certain challenging encounters or battles.

Presidential Term of Thomas Custer (1889-1893) American Interflow Timeline
After 12 years of trials and errors, Thomas Custer would finally rise and claim the presidency in a Post-Barnum era. With the nation being fundamentally changed in the past 8 years and with the effect of Barnum’s administration still very prevalent, like the still persistent Revelationist and Communard issues, Custer would need to uncharacteristically tread carefully to prevail in such a climate.
President Thomas Custer’s Cabinet
Vice President - Alfred A. Taylor
Secretary of State - Francis Cockrell
Secretary of the Treasury - Adlai Stevenson I
Secretary of War - John Potter Stockton
Secretary of the Navy - Arthur Sewall
Secretary of the Interior - Thomas Goode Jones
Attorney General - Jesse Root Grant II
Secretary of Sustenance - Sylvester Pennoyer
Secretary of Public Safety - Lyon G. Tyler (resigned May 1891), John R. McLean
(read about the campaigns against the radicals here) Left? Right? No, Custerite!
During his election campaign, the president promised a wide-range of groups things he would do in a future administration. Appealing to liberals, conservatives, nationalists, populists, militarists, anti-imperialists, and pro-reconciliationists, Custer would be flexible and non-partisan in his policies in order to fulfil such promises. Custer would first appeal to the anti-imperialist wing of his support by renegotiating to United States' promised port in the Congo during the Berlin Conference, crafted by Secretary Francis Cockrell, the United States would sell their land claims to the French on August 1889 for $1,250,000. The move would receive praise from anti-imperialists like Senators George Boutwell (F-MA) and Grover Cleveland (C-NY), and Representatives Edward Atkinson (C-MA) and John Wanamaker (P-PA), although opposition was brought in by some Commons and the old Barnumites like Representative William McKinley (F-OH).
Land designated for the United States (dark blue) were sold to the French Empire
Appealing to the pro-reconciliationists would be a harder feat than any of this. Ever since the end of the Civil War, stigmatism between the black and white communities in the south grew, it was further boosted by the barring policy of the Davis and Hamlin administrations which divided communities between whites and blacks to prevent violence. Forced integration was implemented by Custer with the Integration and Co-operation Act of 1889 which merged local segregated communities and forced some citizens living in those communities to live within the other group's area. Anti-reconciliationists like Senator Arthur Pue Gorman (C-MD) and Representative Benjamin Tillman (C-SC) opposed the bill, as they were elected within or with the backing of a white-only segregated community, though the pro-reconciliationists, which composed of both of the old pro and anti Barnumites, populists, salvationists, and progressives pushed the bill to pass Congress.

The act faced major scrutiny from both black and white anti-reconciliationists, which pushed it as dictatorial and a breach of their civil liberties. The case made it all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States in the case Jennings v. Gibbs, in which Florida county lawyer William Sherman Jennings sued Representative Thomas Van Renssalaer Gibbs (F-FL) for 'infringing on and decrying civil liberties' by his support of the act. Gibbs' lawyers sighted the act was to end possible future violence between the two groups and claimed it was for the overall wellbeing of the country and to the citizen as their move was paid for by the government itself and that it was within the government's authority to enforce such acts, while Jennings sighted the First Amendment, claiming to this act violated the right of petition the government as the citizens were more or less forced into integrating without a say. The court decided on June 10th, 1890, and sided 5-4 in favor of Gibbs, claiming that it was within the government's right to enforce such an act. Although the court did also sort of sided with Jennings, pushing that the citizens moved out of their communities must give their consent and approval of moving out. Justice Robert Roosevelt wrote the majority opinion: "It is within Congress' right to enforce such laws that they apply, although it is also important to receive the consent and approval of those being affect by the laws they apply, as without it is simple tyranny.". The Supreme Court just marked pro-reconciliation acts as constitutional.

With Custer getting the greenlight on reconciliation, he began to deal with those dissenting on his new laws. Some violence and unrest arose from anti-reconciliation protestors causing riots and clashes with the police, in one incident, an anti-reconciliation mob beat one police officer to death and threw in body in the streets. The incident shocked the nation and many demanded justice, this gave Custer the backing to enact another plan he had. In the span of June-August, thousands of anti-reconciliationist rioters were arrested and sent to 're-education facilities' to be 're-educated' about their beliefs, those re-educated would be release after a month and if they caused more dissent they would be thrown back into the facilities to be 're-educated' once again. No one exactly knows what happens in the facilities but rumors going from torture to brainwashing are common, but those released from the facilities never talk about their experience there. Although, anti-reconciliation violence has been significantly reduced ever since the program was created.
Custer's Politics for Dummies
The Presidential Cabinet has always been more or less been aligned with the president's beliefs, although in this case, with the president's beliefs all over the place, the cabinet would be quiet diverse. Some would have quite populistic beliefs like Treasury Secretary Stevenson and Sustenance Secretary Pennoyer, some would be traditionally conservative like Navy Secretary Sewall, War Secretary Stockton, and Secretary of Public Safety Tyler, and some would be considered more liberal like Secretaries Cockrell and Jones, and Attorney General Grant. This caused some division in the cabinet, with many members having different opinions on issues, like the admission of more states in the plain, with the more populistic members being for it and the conservative ones being against it. Vice President Alfred A. Taylor, who was often the most moderate within the cabinet, often had headaches due to the amount of bickering in the cabinet, privately saying, "I would rather have been the presidential cook than a member of this cabinet.". Taylor was known for serving delicious Tennessee Cornbread during cabinet meetings and public events, which were from his own recipe.
On the Congressional front, politics there too was starkly changing. The Radical People's and Christian Salvation Parties had faced a significant decline over the last election and were facing even complete dissolution. The bells did toll for the Salvationists, as on June 1, 1889, waiting for a train going from his hometown of Freeport, Illinois to Chicago, Senator Charles J. Guiteau was shot by an assailant who was connected to the Salvationists. The bullet did not puncture his heart though and he was immediately treated by doctors. The doctors, however, operated on him with unsterilized fingers and tools trying to find the bullet, and Guiteau contracted an infection which slowly weakened his health. Guiteau would pass away on June 30th, which ended a major figurehead for the Salvationists. With their main leader gone, the Salvationists and their party were now certainly going to fall, so once again they turned to the Populists to help, they proposed a merge of their parties, unlike the Visionary Alliance back in 1884, this move would be permanent. A joint Radical People's-Christian Salvation convention was called in D.C., in which they decided to form the Reformed People's Party which would incorporate both Populist and Salvationist agendas. All Salvationists and Populists would run on this party's banner starting on the 1890 midterms, causing a wave of new support of their joint movements to grow. Representatives like Jerry Simpson (RP-KA), Charles Tupper (CS-NS), and Marion Butler (RP-NC), and Senator John P. St. John (CS-KA), although notably the party leader Senator James B. Weaver (RP-IA) did not outright support the merger.

Troubles also arose within the ruling party itself. With Custer's moves in office being controversial not only nation-wide but also within his own party. Many Commons were repulsed by Custer's appeal to nationalists and populists, like his push for isolationism, labor reform, free trade, and anti-gold standard policies, which saw as the reason why the current economy was entering a small recession. The Custer administration was also known as notoriously corrupt, though Custer himself was more blind to the issue than actually involved in it, it was well-known that politicians like Secretary Tyler were making backdoor deals with businessmen like J.P. Morgan and Andrew Carnegie, even personally aiding in putting down worker strikes. Representative William Kissam Vanderbilt (P-NY) even once said, "The difference between a crafty serpent and a pro-big business politician? They have heels, I suppose.". These anti-reform and anti-Custerite politicians within the Commonwealth Party were called 'Reactionaries'. The reactionaries would included members like Senators Arthur Pue Gorman and John M. Palmer (C-IL) and Representatives like John Carlisle (C-KY). The reactionaries would form a major bloc within the party, often favoring militarism and traditional values in Congress, as seen from there opposition of the pro-reconciliation bills and their support for things like the gold standard and imperialism. But also from the other side of the spectrum are the people who see Custer as not reforming enough. Although they weren't as loud as the reactionaries and still mainly accept the situation, many still want more reform coming from the high office. The groups members included the likes of Representatives Samuel M. Jones (F-OH) and Charles N. Felton (C-CA), advocating mostly for internationalism, taxes, anti-corruption measures, and tariff reduction. Though more extreme politicians like Jones would call for monopoly busting, strong regulation, and direct elections.

The Freedom Party had faced its largest split since the Federalist-Freedomite split during Henry Clay’s term. After the elections of 1888, the former Anti-Barnumites had taken control of most major positions in the main Freedom Party after the Conservative Freedom Party remerged with them. Staunch Anti-Barnumites like the pragmatic Representative Thomas Brackett Reed and stanch conservative Senator William Pierce Frye (F-MA) would all head their party in Congress. The remaining former Barnumites such as Representative William McKinley sought to amend the wounds between their counterparts and began the works to begin reconciling between the factions. Though many Freedomites were unsure about reconciling with the other faction, members like McKinley, Reed, and Representative Henry Clay Evans (F-TN) were influential in eventually mending their relations by the 1890 midterms, showing a mostly fully united party. This also was partly helped by the fact that former President Phineas Taylor Barnum would call for his old party’s unification, which had some mixed reactions in the party.

The Military's Resolve
The government would once again refused the military extremists' demands of increased power. As such, the 700 or so extremists would attempt to storm the White House, with others were sent to seize government buildings and offices against the capitol. The D.C. police was immediately called to hold back the group and a shootout immediately ensued outside the White House. 2 hours passed as the shootout continued and both rebels and police were shot dead, the White House received significant damage due to artillery brought by the rebels, with some rebels even entering the now evacuated building. As the 3rd hour mark hit, military loyalist finally arrived at the scene, led by Harrison Gray Otis and Arthur MacArthur, the 3,000 loyalists sent engaged the rebels who were now resorting to guerilla warfare. 3 more hours would pass as the loyalists would trek to find the rebels scattered around Capitol Hill, it finally cease as the loyalists would find and capture both Jacob H. Smith and J. Franklin Bell hiding in an abandoned building, the remaining rebels would surrender in the 7th hour. Over 500 people would die in the so-called "Battle of Capitol Hill".

The affair caused a uproar across the nation, with some siding the government claiming the military was being spoiled, while some supported the rebel's calls claiming the remaining restrictions were still ruining their careers. It also divided the military more, with some siding with the loyalists and some adhering to the rebel's calls. Fears began to rise of a second Civil War due to such divisions, as some Reactionary politicians began to support the militarist cause. Immediate calls within the government were pushing for appeasement to the militarists to avoid another rebellion. Thus negotiators began to work on something to ease the stress of the military resulting in quite the controversial move.
The 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution would add 9 seats to the House of Representatives that would be designated for the military. Called the 'Military Representatives', 9 servicemen would be chosen from either branch of the military to serve as Representatives for the military's interests. The Representatives would be appointed by the president and approved by the Senate and members could be removed by the president during House elections. The amendment was ratified with astonishing speed, being ratified only two months after it was proposed on February 23, 1891 right before the 52nd Congress met on March 4th. Custer also personally backed the amendment, with others like Representative Thomas B. Reed and William Kissam Vanderbilt supporting it. The 9 Military Representatives were sworn in along with the other 349 normally elected Representatives. Despite the amendment being quickly ratified, it still faced major opposition from anti-militarists and especially the remaining Populists and Salvationists. Representative Henry Clay Evans about the amendment, "If this amendment were to pass, we would be nothing but lapdogs to the armed forces, always in fear of a military rebellion.". Senator Daniel W. Voorhees (P-IN) stated, "Giving any more powers to the military would strip our fairly elected government of independence and reason, as fear would now dominate our politics.". Speaker Alexander S. Clay (C-GA) would be ousted as Speaker by John Wanamaker after the midterms in an anti-Commonwealth vote, Clay would later state, "Was supporting the amendment to the Constitution the right action? I do not know that answer. Yet I know one thing. It was the only action there was."

Tommy the Man
After the meltdowns of the past two years, Custer would focus in his domestic and foreign policy. Custer would continue his pro-reconciliation policies, achieving slow success across the south, with some forcefully integrated communities prospering and with some having being burnt to the ground. Both pro-labor and pro-business policies would be implemented, such as an 8-hour work day and a shorter work week, other than this, businesses would be usually deregulated and were given reigns in handling any of their practices, with businessmen such as J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, and John D. Rockefeller emerging as powerful figures nationally, with their monopolies being wide reaching.
Cartoon mocking the rise of corporations and their growing power over politics
Custer's more reformist policies would deter some of his allies against him, as the likes of Public Safety Secretary Lyon G. Tyler, who disliked Custer's rowdiness in politics in general. Tyler basically had enough went Custer vetoed many legislations that were drafted by the Commons themselves. Tyler resigned as Secretary on May 1891, being replaced by the more moderate John R. McLean. Despite being bashed for his reforms, Custer would also be criticized for his more conservative policies too. A believer in laissez-faire economics and free trade, Custer would refuse to intervene in the economy even when it entered a recession during 1890-91. Custer would often get criticized for allowing big business to skyrocket out of control with their monopolies and trusts, though he would claim his concern was only of the workers' well being. Governor Nathan Goff Jr. (P-VA) would criticize Custer's domestic policies by stating, "Protectionism, direct elections, and internationalism are core things we need in this day and age, not only in Virginia but nationally, yet the president has rejected all of them.". Custer's domestic policies would see opposition from the new reformed populists, which called the Commonwealth Party the party of 'Business, Booze, and Boors'.
Custer, despite being a self-proclaimed 'isolationist', often had interest in foreign affairs yet couldn't act on them as fearing it would deter his supporters. When war broke out in South America in December 31, 1891, when Argentina, who is run by the dictator Nicholas Levalle who recently staged a coup against the government, and Bolivia invaded Chile and Paraguay (more on in the foreign events section), Custer privately sought intervention in favor of Chile and Paraguay to preserve their democracies. Yet Congress and the general public were staunchly against any intervention in South America as they saw as another foreign war. Anti-intervention sentiment grew even further when the Empire of Brazil intervened in favor of Chile and Paraguay on April 1, 1892, their force now being called the 'Continental Alliance', causing the scale of the war to increase and the death toll to grow. Though the public opinion was firmly sympathetic to the Continental Alliance, some in government sought to aid the 'Golden Alliance' of Argentina and Bolivia, as they saw helping them as a way to control their economy and politics, though yet again the majority rejected intervention. Custer did consult his cabinet on what to do on the matter, which Secretaries Sewall and Jones were in favor of intervention, though other like Secretary Cockrell and Attorney General Grant were against it which ultimately led Custer to not intervene for the time being. The US did sell highly demanded imports to both sides of the conflict, which yielded major profit.

The War Down Even More South
High inflation, corruption, and bad worker rights in Argentina caused major unrest against the government. The Revolution of Park broke out against the government then run by the conservative National Autonomist Party on July 26, 1890. The rebels captured an arms and ammunition facility in the city and began to arm themselves as government began to apprehend them. The government forces were caught off guard by the now armed rebels and were forced to retreat, the rebels then turned to the Casa Rosada and the president, the revolutionaries successfully broke through the guards and stormed the building, forcing President Manuel Celman to resign. A revolutionary junta was put in place of the government as a new larger government loyalist force was organized to recapture the capitol, which led was by General Nicholas Levalle. The loyalist force successfully defeated revolutionary resistance in the capitol and entered the Casa Rosada, the revolutionary junta was defeat although President Celman had been executed and Vice President Pellegrini had fled the city. Levalle, seeing an opportunity, declared himself emergency president, even rejecting Pellegrini when he returned to the city. Over the past months, Lavalle would style himself with dictatorial powers over the Argentine government, which only fueled his ego.
General Nicholas Levalle of Argentina
Lavalle was a man who opposed the resolve of the border dispute between Chile in Patagonia which restricted Argentina outside the Pacific Ocean. In tandem, Bolivia's Gregorio Pacheco, who succeeded his very pro-Chile predecessor, had designs on Chile after Bolivia had lost the War of the Pacific, as well as Paraguay. Lavalle had secret meetings with Pacheco regarding their plan on Chile, later including Paraguay to the discussion, many meetings later and they decided on a plan to demand land from both nations. Their militaries were built up in the coming months to prepare for the incoming conflict. On December 26, 1891, Bolivia sent an ultimatum to Chile demanding their coastal provinces lost in the War of the Pacific to be returned, Argentina would back them the next day. On the 27th, Bolivia demanded full recognition of the control of the Chaco region from Paraguay, which Argentina backed the same day. Given until the 31st to respond, the Chilean and Paraguayan governments refused to respond to the ultimatums, so on the 31st, Bolivia declared war on Chile and Bolivia, Argentina would declare war on January 2nd.
The campaigns at first favored the 'Golden Alliance' of Argentina and Bolivia, which saw advanced in the north of Chile and southern Paraguay. By February, the Golden Alliance would be nearing the Paraguayan capital of Asuncion, which worried their neighbor to the east, the Empire of Brazil. Empress Isabel I was facing a waning popularity, especially after her father abolished slavery, and the public were firmly against the Golden Alliance. Fearing Argentina's and Bolivia's victory would shatter trust in her even more, she decided to intervene. An ultimatum was sent to Argentina, dictating to end the war or face a blockade, the Argentinians ignored the order. Brazilian ships would begin a naval blockade against Argentina, but oddly some ships were ordered to go dangerously close to the Argentina coast on February 25th. As the ships grew near, the Argentine coast guard were unable to recognize the vessels and assumed they were Chilean and open fired. Despite Argentina apologizing for the incident, the affair caused enough outrage in Brazil to secure that a war was a certain. Brazil declared war on both Argentina and Bolivia on April 1st, forming the 'Continental Alliance' with Chile and Paraguay. The war would rage on from April-August as many foreign nations watched, with both sides gaining the upper hand many times and thousands dead or wounded. By August, both sides would be exhausted by war and bloodshed and needed something to tip the scales.
